WISHIMAY

I have a new summer resolution inspired by recent events...You just never know when you're gonna kick and if you can't remember the last fun thing you did, well...that would just be SAD!

So tell me... what fun things have been rattleing around in your brain?
Plans for things you wanna do this summer? Plans for something you've been wanting to do since 1992? Local places you've heard of or things halfway around the world?

I wanna do this cave-in-boat tour thing and go canoeing again...I haven't been in years...I want to go camping somewhere new...and take up some new hobbies-bought a bow n' arrows and a violin! I'd love to take a trip by train...and throw a party or two!

So what do you got?

DREAMTROVE

I'm going to sea.

Anyone considering a new hobby, I humbly suggest: start small. Get the instinct for it, the feel for it, and don't invest a lot, or incur future liability. Who you connect with and how strong a bond you can form in your new hobby is far more important than how much you invest. Keep your eyes open for ways to be an asset to whatever community you join. Every hobby has a community, and people value those who can listen to field, determine what is needed and communicate solutions to that need.

As for activities, I suggest taking a look at a wide variety of them, and then going out and watching the community, how they interact with one another. Are they supportive? Open? Friendly? or are they insular, hostile, or bitter?

If one person leaves a group or misses a gathering and everyone else tells you what is wrong with them, this is not a good sign, they will likely do it to you when you're not there if you become a member. If everyone tells you great things about the people who are not there, then it's more likely that as you become a member of the group, they will do the same for you.

Check how healthy the members of the group are. Those who have been doing it for a long time, are they still in good health? better health? or have they put on 400 pounds and are losing their mind?

Look at whom the community respects. Do they respect those who contribute new ideas? Those who work hard? Those who host social events? If you join the group, see if you can see yourself becoming one of these.

Or do they only respect those with money? or those who have been there the longest? These are generally things you can never become, and represent an insular community that's not going to be warm to additional members.

Also, check your potential hobby activities to see what other hobbies they might be connected to. Is what the community is doing part of a larger culture? Perhaps they are dancers, but they tour renaissance faires, and they are intimately connected with many other communities in that culture. Examine the culture as a whole, and its character and other activities within it.

Acquiring the skills of a hobby or coming up with a list is easy. Becoming part of a positive community that will help you build your skills and use them to good effect may be more tricky, and requires a little analysis

While it's true you can go whaling on a schooner, you can also go schooning in a whale.

(I know someone this happened to.)

Maybe find some treasure. Arr.

I used to do a lot of figure drawing, and one of the models was a violinist. I remember her playing the violin nude while I drew her. Violins, like sax, go with anything ;)

WishIMay,

I lost it to cronyism. They imposed fines and threatened me with unlimited liability unless I sold. The situation of eminent domain in the US is not just a technicality of the law, it's become a national attitude. The rich feel entitled to ownership of your property and any mineral rights therein, and they will use any mechanism at their disposal to get it.

If you actually do what the survivalist crowd suggests and try to defend it, they will not only kill you and your family, but they will use the incident to enact new laws giving them new rights over your property.

Hence, I give up. I give up on the USA. There is no point to owning property in the USA, because Americans have no rights to property, and as someone posted earlier, and I think it was from Ayn Rand actually, that if you have no right to property, you are a slave.

So, since I don't see anywhere that isn't part of our empire in the globalist age that will allow you more rights than America, I'm opting for a tall ship, and a star to steer her by, because they'll just use that GPS to track me down with predator drones if I say something they don't like. Anyway, hence my signature line. Jack Sparrow on the much edited island scene with Elizabeth, ends with "What a ship really is... is freedom." (I figured people could figure that one out for themselves on the grounds that I figured 100% of the population has seen the movie.)

That's what a ship is, you know - it's not just a keel and a hull and a deck and sails, that's what a ship needs.

They're puttin in a new highway just spittin' distance from my house, and two or three people have opted to have their homes moved, was that something that was not feasible for you? Dirt is ...dirt... no matter where ya go, but I think the home is the main thing...

I sympathize either way, moving is difficult anyways, and being forced out...doubly so! Emminent domain is just one of those tricky sticky things that you think will never happen to you...but it's always been there to stick it to anyone not fortunate (or unfortunate enough, depending on how you look at it) enough to be running the show. I hope you find somewheres that you are just as home in as where you were!
This time you might wanna consider...a moat...and fortifications
