There is actually an anime movie of the series. I saw it on cable. I thought it was pretty interesting, but I doubt Joss got any inspiration from it.

Of course maybe I'm wrong.

Others have mentioned this similarity so I always meant to pick up the movie, which I finally did a couple of weeks ago. And I loved it. Just starting to pick up the individual TV series discs: six discs each sold separately with four or five eps each.

I especially love the music and wonderful, rich and surprising Japanese animation. At the moment, I can't make any worthy comments until I've seen the whole run.

Yes, Cowboy Bebop is great. I highly recommend it. I love the characters and the way they interact.

There are some parallels, but I would not say that Bebop and Firefly are all that close. The similarities are that both have an old but reliable ship as home, and both crews are scraping to get by, and rely on one another even though there is some friction.

I'm going on now, and I'll be on tonight (7-10), and tomorrow morning. Search for "Ballad of Bebop" and/or "JediBeast" to find me.

C'mon people, I'm all alone out here!

I just watched the first volume with 5 episodes on the DVD last night. I agree in that there aren't that many similarities. Outer space, scraping to get by, and a mix of different cultures (Japanese, Chinese, Russian, etc.) but other than that I can't find anything (and I was looking). What I do enjoy about Bebop is the humor. I guess I haven't seen enough anime titles that actually make me laugh at the dialogue.

I'm on now, and it's 7:25 (give or take a minute) Ottawa time. Arizona is what, two, three hours behind me?

And why is it that the only map in my apartment is of Mars?

SHADESIREN

Yeah, I keep wondering if I'm watching some OTHER Cowboy Bebop, because the similiarities I see between Cowboy Bebop and Firefly are about the same as I see with, say, Firefly and Star Trek and Battlestar Galatica, and just about EVERY other sci-fi show EVER made.

1) they're in space

2) on a spaceship

3) in the future.

the one other similiarity I saw mentioned was the culture part, about the mix of cultures. Sadly, I didn't even notice. I was watching an oriental made show with oriental influence, so I didn't even notice it, I just assumed, well, it's made by oriental people, so go figure there'd be oriental signs, etc. (I say oriental in place of whatever actual nationality should be referenced, as I don't pretend to know :P )

Basically, to sum up that mess I just said - it's Anime. Anime usually has that stuff, cuz it's made in like, Japan or wherever.

My husband says Cowboy Bebop and Firefly have about as much in common as Akira and Carrie lol.

I've seen the movie, the TV show, and I just don't get it.

I think that there are far more similarities than you're giving credit to. For one thing, there's definatly a mixture of cultures in both shows. On Bebop, eace planet and moon have a distinct culture: Venus is Middle Eastern, Mars is American, etc. The music of both shows reflect this.

The crew interactions are also similar. On Firefly, there are obvious relationships between members of the crew, and although they'd never say that they're one big happy family, they are connected to the one another. For instance, Mal may not have a great deal of affection for Wash, but he does have affection for Zoe. Jayne doesn't have obvious affection for anyone, but he does have some for Kaylee, who in turn is adored by almost everyone. It's similar on the Bebop. Spike would most likely be a loner if it weren't for Jet, and Jet's prediliction for picking up various vagrants. It's through Jet that Spike is able to connect to Faye, Ed, and even Ein.

There's also the idea that the crews have to scrape to get by. Both crews are always just a few blown jobs away from being homeless and hungry. This is very different from most other sci-fi shows, (hell, most shows period) where the characters always seem to have an unlimited amount of resources.

Finally, I think that both show make good use of a unique "homey" setting for their shows. Firefly's of course is the dining area, while Bebop has the living room, complete with TV, couches, and a coffee table. This seperates the shows from most other sci-fi series, which have their most important scenes take place in sterile, high-tech, working eviroments.

I'm not saying that the two shows aren't vastly different in other areas, or that Bebop influenced Firefly. However, I do think that there are enough similarities between the two that a fan of one might find enough familiar in the other to enjoy it.
