Quote:Originally posted by Causal: In one of the DVD commentaries (can't remember which) Joss says that in Firefly, only bad guys where hats. As for example, bad guys in hats: Patience, Badger, the feds on the Dortmunder. And, oddly, Jayne is constantly in hats: HoG, TM, Train Job, Safe. I'm telling you: eventually, Jayne would have turned (my guess: season two finale cliffhanger).

I saw a reference somewhere here just lately that the Jayne hat was part of a running gag-- Joss and the costume designer made a point of putting Jayne in *U*G*L*Y* headgear as a sight gag-- the Snoopy hat in the Train Job, and the hat and goggles in Jaynestown come to mind. So maybe it's not a symbol, just a running joke.

Hell, in the pilot, Mal and Zoe are in a combat zone and not even wearing helmets, for frak's sake! ________________________________________________________________________ - Grand High Poobah of the Mythical Land of Iowa, and Keeper of State Secrets - Captain, FFF.net Grammar Police - Vote JonnyQuest/Causal, for Benevolent Co-Dictator of Earth; together, toward a brighter tomorrow!

We got outflanked by the independent squad, and we're never gonna make it back to our platoon. (beat) We need to resort to cannibalism. YOUNG SIMON That was fast. Don't we have rations or anything? YOUNG RIVER They got lost. We're gonna have to eat the men.

Makes me think that maybe Jayne's mother would have made an appearance had the series gone on. She would either be as bad as he is, or long suffering about him, I think. Maybe he could even have had brothers! Imagine Wash or Simon saying "There's MORE of him?!"

The time he lets Simon know that he'd only kill him "in a fair fight." Reynolds is a gunslinger -- could face off with Wyatt Earp. Offering to draw against a rank amateur isn't my notion of fair. It's a pretense of fair. ... oooOO}{OOooo ... I've given up looking for the meaning of life. Now all I want is a cookie.

Quote:Originally posted by JEWELSTAITEFAN: I thought this had been discussed before. I consider your take to be misdirected. Mal hates the Alliance. Inara represents the Alliance. Her letting the Alliance run her life, subjecting herself to the giant thumb of the Alliance, is what he is referring to when he mentions whoring. The double meaning due to her occupation is what he hides behind (rebels, innependents are not taken kindly by the likes of the Alliance - so he can't speak openly about his dislike of purplebellies.) Nobody else on his crew has a greater working relationship with the Alliance. If he is actually in fact solely targeting the sexual application of the term instead of the political, then I conjure it is due to his jealousy. Or wanting to get a rise out of her. Otherwise he doth protest too much.

My friends have to tell me later what happened. So Mal knowingly rents a shuttle to a companion & takes the attitude that she is working for The Alliance rather than for her Guild which is a valid entity within the Alliance. Does he consider her a double whore? Book is from the Alliance. Is he working for the A or just for God? Mal likes to assume that Book wants to preach at him; & Book did one time re Mrs. Reynolds. That was a surprise, too, since anyone could see thru Saffron with half an eye. That could the #2 dumbest thing on Firefly.

Quote:Originally posted by Oonjerah: Surely you are not hinting that Mal calls Inara a whore & it's his way of flirting? Very common in movies since "ancient times:" The hero & the heroine are much attracted. But they spend most of the movie denying it and sparring or belittling one another. Perhaps Joss is simply giving his stars the classic treatment. Anyways, I've always disliked that abrasive way of courting, as to me, it looks very hurtful and unloving. It does.
