Just wondering, what other site is so self-regulating as FFF?

I belong to other sites, but rarely visit them.
Take the TrekBBS site- I was a' posting on it, and came up against a dude handled "RushLimborg." He was a typical authoritarian lapdog, only Starfleet style. I called him on it & made a little joke (extremely little, Ensign) concerning his assimilation by the Rush, and was given an "Official Warning" that I could be vanquished from the bored (heh) if I received two more.
Gorram Alliance Cortex tactics!
There's like, no other site I've ever been to that allows the heights (or depths) of dissent on this site. We are luckier than we can imagine.

More's the thanks to the wise & almighty Haken!

Just an observation.

Indeed.

I view even such crap as Rappy and PN as the price we pay for freedom of speech.

And really, it's such a small price to pay. Small annoyances from small, petty people.

There's no place I can be since I found Serenity.

I think the main problem with most boards is that the admins and moderators tend to favor one type of poster or one point of view over another. Haken pretty much leaves it up to us to do what we want, and most of us don't abuse the privilege.

I used to belong to a True Blood board that was taken over by Eric fans. They will not hear one word of criticism of the character and tend to bend some of the scenes in the books and TV episodes to conform to their point of view.

They have even attacked other points of view and the mods didn't do anything.

I was on the board less than a week before I stopped visiting it, but it still continues. I also found a friendlier board and I'm very happy chatting about True Blood there.

Haken has made this place an oasis and treats us like the adults that we are. I love him for that.

I frequent a couple Stargate sites (which have become quite quiet ever since Atlantis was cancelled) and like the message above, it was quite common for those of dissenting views to get "dog piled" on by those long-time members. The problem with them is that they all came to some consensus as to what canon is/was without making those points of view in a "stickied" thread. So when new folks came along and asked a question, they would be inundated with replies like "Don't ask" or "do a search, you N00B!"

Of course searches would bring up locked or archived threads so the new folks couldn't post their views, so when they created new threads continuing the conversations, they would get locked or banned. Needless to say, this would happen because those long-time members are now moderators, so they have the power.

But that's what I love about FFF.net. Most everyone here knows there will be differing views, and usually have something constructive to say, rather than beating down the poster.

Some boards are just like high school, with cliques and "secret threads" for mods to literally make fun of "mere posters".

Some boards literally have cops taking control of them, banning members who disagree with cops, but never ban cops for disagreeing.

The cops even make arrests to "help" certain moderators at their place of business, though I suspect that may have been extortion by cop using police informants to stage fake crimes for protection rackets, since the cop was always in the right place at the right time in the middle of the night on a loney road. The sucking up to cops on those forums is quite disgusting.

It's worth pointing out that huge numbers of potential Firefly fans have been driven away from the board by the large numbers of vitriolic, racist and downright hostile threads. You know, regular people who wanted to share their love of a TV show but wondered why people were allowed to post threads calling Jewel a whore.

I've actually driven away members because of my terribly bigoted dislike of vampires... Didn't mean to. I thought it was one of those vampire/werewolf arguments, and they were talking about Twilight, a decidedly pro-vampire series if I've ever heard of one... ._. I stopped posting on vampire threads after that...

The environment can be hostile, and I suppose there's no justification for that. People are forced to swim or leave.

On the other hand, strong opinions are going to happen. As it turns out, to some people my opinion about vampires ("stake 'em all" was the phrase I used) is as nasty as someone else's actual racism/sexism/creedism/homophobia. There's simply no possible way to filter out all content that any random person might find offensive.

Ultimately, this site offers an unusual policy on free speech, one which strongly attracts anyone who remains... Who isn't torn to shreds first.

Indeed. The vast majority have chosen to leave. I know people will blame it on the show finishing or the movie flopping but I'm a Doctor Who fan - I've been on fan sites for a show that appeared precisely once in 16 years, sites that were active, vibrant, friendly, informative and more. FFF has effectively turned into a ghost town, with a few madmen posting endless diatribes on the same lunatic topics and a few dozen more who remember what the place used to be and used to be about.

Basically, tell people that they can yell fire in a crowded theatre but you trust them not to, you're always going to attract those who will not only yell it but compete to see who can yell the loudest.

Just my take on it.

Realistically, this site can never be what it once was. Joss, the writers, the producers, the actors, and a good majority of the fans have moved on.

It has been 7 years since Firefly aired its 13 episodes--not exactly a wealth of content to merit a host of websites and a continued large following, but we're still here--ghost town and all.

Actually, along the spirit of Firefly, I prefer to think of this place as more a saloon in some backward town out in the boonies. Where the locals and a few unsavory visiting characters just hang out after a long hard day, have copious amounts of beer, and shoot the breeze--maybe even have a brawl or two over some stupid disagreement.

This place with all its flaws is comforting. It is the one constant in my life where I can find a bit of solace. FFF.NET is my 'Man Cave.' It is always there for me when I need it. I would like to think that it is there for others too when they need it.

So that's my take.

Well, we DO try to keep it contained to the RWED area...

As has been pointed out, RWED acts like a swimming pool's filter, keeping some of the dregs of discussion out of the main areas where they could infect the rest of the board.

The various Firefly sites remind me of different planets from Firefly, this one is definitely on the Rim side of things, with a pretty wide assortment of people from all kinds of travel lanes making their way from a lot of different places (planets) - like the Space Bazaar from The Message:

"It's a giant flea market/ food court/ carnival/ bar/ post office/ whatever the hell anybody needs out here station. We see the scope of the place as we push in (low angle) towards a BARKER, standing in front of a small, curtained off space. He's talking from the top, very fast, selling hard."

I think that might be Frem.

Amen to that.

I visit other sites with less problems, but they also have less overall hits anyhow. The worst places are where the stated central theme is one thing, which the participants are enthusiasts about, but the moderators decide their warped political delusions are the reason they should ban or restrict other participant enthusiasts. The main subject of interest becomes irrelevant to these web-bullies.

we are pretty lucky on this site, as we are generally free to discuss our own opinions etc. I've experienced a few teeny instances of subtle elitism or misassumption, but these have been outweighed by the times some of my more clumsily worded entries have been tolerated. It's good to talk and not be censored or made to feel like you don't belong.

oh cool! I'm an anarchist! I can hold my head a little higher now.

And I can be content in the knowledge that on this site I'm not going to have half a dozen people posting offended comments or telling me why I'm not really an anarchist etc etc. rather than recognising the fact that I don't really care how I'm labelled as long as people are respectful and accepting. Ta daaaah!......though I have it on good authority that I have lost the plot a little lately what with the cognitive strain my studies have inflicted on my intellect.
