My IP is dynamic, constantly shifting. I'm never in the same place twice. When you hear of me, I'm a ghost. Everything goes somewhere. I go everywhere, while appearing nowhere.

The greatest trick the devil ever pulled was convincing the world he didn't exist.

Ha, think that's funny do ya ?

One of my prosthetic tool and equipment providers is Cybderdyne Systems, and they happen to make a unit called "HAL", as well - Sankai has kind of an evil sense of humor, and he does the Overlord thing well enough that *I* call him Sempai.
(which is also an in-language pun)

You just wait till he gets his cybernetic battlesuit up and running, you meat puppets...

Funny? I think it's more than just a li'l bit scary, to be honest. Putting words like "aggressive" and "autonomous" in with my droids just really puts me off.

As an alternative, we could treat a growing AI, including choices and conclusions made as something to be respected. In return we would theoretically EARN the respect of the robots, and then subsequently sadness, pity, and sympathy for our fragile mortality.

You know, like children, if our society weren't so freakin' terrible at raising children too.

I'm depressed now. Just by sheer numbers we're probably going to end up with a military robot spontaneously developing AI. Death and destruction will be all it knows, and since all humans will look the same...

I imagine a future where humanity is wiped out, and what few robots remain spend all their time in what amounts to deadly robot war games hunting each other down. They bomb cities and country side, eliminating all the signs of what good we humans had in our creative/creation abilities.

Thousands of years from now, the only sign of our existence will be a metal face, rusting into dust, the sprout of a plant growing up from the eye socket.

We are living in the midst of a permanent wartime economy. The most important capital good produced in the West today is weaponry. The most important sector in international trade is not oil or automobiles or airplanes. It is armaments.

... This explosion in armaments production provides the perfect demonstration of how the rational system works. These enormous industries are the result of conscious policies. They have involved prolonged cooperation between most of the key modern elites -- politicians, bureaucrats, corporate managers, staff officers, scientists and economists. The creation of this arms-oriented economy has been perhaps the happiest moment in the life of the rational system. There has been a purity, a structural malleability, a cool, abstract intelligence about the whole thing which are unmuddied by the realities of uncontrollable populations and unpredictable economies.

It is precisely this abstraction which has made it impossible for the citizen to get a handle on the situation. Living as we do in a civilization that wallows in information, statistics mean nothing. They become the commas and semicolons of everyday speech. Since they are mostly used by technocrats to decorate their self-fulfilling arguments, the citizen has developed an unconscious defense. He shuts off his value-weighing perceptions the moment he hears a number. In such a situation, intellectual resistance is virtually impossible. Deafness is therefore a healthy reaction.

CYBERSNARK

If I were you guys, I'd be less worried about the out-of-control hardware and more concerned with the software:
http://www.csmonitor.com/USA/2010/0921/Stuxnet-malware-is-weapon-out-t
o-destroy-Iran-s-Bushehr-nuclear-plant

Quote:

Cyber security experts say they have identified the world's first known cyber super weapon designed specifically to destroy a real-world target – a factory, a refinery, or just maybe a nuclear power plant.

The cyber worm, called Stuxnet, has been the object of intense study since its detection in June. As more has become known about it, alarm about its capabilities and purpose have grown. Some top cyber security experts now say Stuxnet's arrival heralds something blindingly new: a cyber weapon created to cross from the digital realm to the physical world – to destroy something.

[. . .]

Stuxnet's ability to autonomously and without human assistance discriminate among industrial computer systems is telling. It means, says Langner, that it is looking for one specific place and time to attack one specific factory or power plant in the entire world.

"Stuxnet is the key for a very specific lock – in fact, there is only one lock in the world that it will open," Langner says in an interview. "The whole attack is not at all about stealing data but about manipulation of a specific industrial process at a specific moment in time. This is not generic. It is about destroying that process."

[. . .]

Once Stuxnet identifies the critical function running on a programmable logic controller, or PLC, made by Siemens, the giant industrial controls company, the malware takes control. One of the last codes Stuxnet sends is an enigmatic “DEADF007.” Then the fireworks begin, although the precise function being overridden is not known, Langner says. It may be that the maximum safety setting for RPMs on a turbine is overridden, or that lubrication is shut off, or some other vital function shut down. Whatever it is, Stuxnet overrides it, Langner’s analysis shows.

"After the original code [on the PLC] is no longer executed, we can expect that something will blow up soon," Langner writes in his analysis. "Something big."

Die, Robot! Die!
I dream of destroying Terminators with my iPad and rocket propelled grenades. That's my kind of future, not the dullness of graduating, getting a job, marrying, and have kids, grandchildren, greatgrandchildren. Bring it on, Terminator. Save me from ordinary life. I want to gloriously die blowing up SkyNet.

I just love it when the tea-baggers try to tell me that "the government has never created a single job". I ask them if we can cut the Pentagon's budget next year to zero dollars, since nothing they're doing has anything to do with jobs... ;)

Nah, mankind has gifts that cannot be replicated by a machine - nowhere is this more apparent than in Saberhagens Berserker series in the person of Johann Karlson, the machines COULDN'T beat him, not because of skill or ruthlessness, Spain and Hemphill had those gifts, no - it was Karlsons very HUMANITY that made him incomprehensible, and therefore unbeatable, by the machines...

And yet that very quality made him outcast, pariah, and unwanted among them.

I dunno. I've always thought the concept of "Humans are Special" to be statistically unrealistic and anthropocentric.

http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/HumansAreSpecial

http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/CreativeSterility

Humans are IMPORTANT, yes... So would be all other sentient races. It is strange, and unlikely, to think that a sentient race would not have any means of creative expression, particularly if they are also self-aware.

But even any race that has, say, a hive mind, and no self-awareness, and therefore haven't evolved any need to communicate concepts to each other, ultimately would NEED to evolve this the moment they came into contact with ANOTHER sentient race. This was the tragedy at the end of Ender's Game, as I see it, not only did the buggers not realize humans were sentient until too late, but they weren't quick enough to find a way to communicate.

Sometimes a species still has expression and creativity among individuals even if they're NOT particularly self-aware... Bees dance, you know.

So imagine robots as an entirely new race, only tending to adopt the culture of the creator race and having whatever limitations we put on them. They would still have to express themselves to interact with each other and the creator race, us. What's more, we can already make computer programs that compose music, create artwork, and with rudimentary pattern recognition ability. Wouldn't it be kind of an asshole thing to do, to not include these abilities in robots that could see, feel, and realize that they lack so important a capability? To make it so they have no ability to creatively self-express?

I think it would be awful. I think it would deny them that spark, the the noble creativity, that you feel whenever you work on a machine or have a breakthrough. How unfortunate it would be if a robot couldn't feel this. Imagine if a HUMAN couldn't. How empty an existence that would be.

Funny, you've tumbled to one of my pet studies, the subject of Rampancy.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marathon_Trilogy#Rampancy

You gotta remember, also, Justin keeps that halfsie-AI database front end (Harvester) around too, which has the edge of being modelled off a human personality to begin with, although it's not spontaneous, nor is it ever likely to be due to limitations of the coding.

But it boils down to whether or not a mechanical being could feel empathy for others - if it could, it would more likely pity us than hate us, and if it could not, then it would never understand us.

All that assumes, of course, a certain minimum level of respect, which as you so effectively point out, we can't even manage to offer our own children, so more likely you'd wind up with an initial first-confrontation with a very "hostile" machine which has as first priority it's own survival and defense - something which is a bit subverted with Harvester, in ways I will not relate here.
