The best book I own (and believe me, I have a library)is this:
http://www.amazon.com/Yuen-Kay-San-Wing-Chun-Kuen/dp/1892515032/ref=sr
_1_14?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1287080440&sr=1-14

It examines a Wing Chun mainland style- before it moved on to Hong Kong styles that we Westerners are more familiar with. It's a bit more comprehensive than the versions practiced in tight little Hong Kong rooms and on boats, IMO.

This is also highly recommended:
http://www.amazon.com/Chinese-Fast-Wrestling-Fighting-Ground-Fighting/
dp/1886969493/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1287083403&sr=1-1

I feel that wrestling in any form is a good addition to any martial art, even the traditional High School variety.

This is the best movie for fighting I've ever seen:
http://www.amazon.com/Ip-Man-Donnie-Yen/dp/B003INBNXO/ref=sr_1_1?s=dvd
&ie=UTF8&qid=1287083556&sr=1-1

Yes, it contains some fantastical stuff, but at its center is solid Wing Chun.

This is great for Ju-Jitsu, and surprisingly, it stars our own Chiwetel Ejiofor:
http://www.amazon.com/Redbelt-Chiwetel-Ejiofor/dp/B001C5LLMI/ref=sr_1_
1?ie=UTF8&s=dvd&qid=1287083747&sr=1-1

Seems like he *really* knew what he was doing when he was beating up Mal at the Training House.

Discussions?
Other recommendations?

My favourite live-action martial art movie is Jet Li's Unleashed --mainly for how Li switches between three totally distinct fighting styles over the course of the movie (raising the fighting from a mere spectacle to a visual reflection of Nameless' dramatic arc; from a savage animal to a disciplined warrior and protector).

I also have to give yet another shout-out to Avatar: The Last Airbender, for effectively being an animated kung-fu movie:

I liked his The One quite a lot for the same reason... But I was coming from an instructional venue, movies that demonstrate usable stuff. My favourite movie is Who Am I?. Brandon Lee's Rapid Fire is also top shelf. Forbidden Kingdom is quite entertaining as well, IMO.

The books I linked to above are not for novices, though. They're good for peeps already in the arts, otherwise, they just pretty pictures with some nice philosophy behind it.

Just noting that when I showed Sonisall the final fight from The One (not one hour ago), I was noticing all these similar moves between Bagua & Wing Chun....
Since Wing Chun is a more recent art stemming from the Shaolin than say, Praying Mantis or Hung Gar is, I'm betting that it incorporated many different style elements into one (gorram untraditional upstart Shaolin nun!).

not sure I can add much here, but i have seen the two old Mortal Combat movies, The Quest with CVD. and the movie Death or Alive

but anyway i have completely fallen for the Naruto series, not sure if any of the types of combat can be identified to real ones so to speak, but if any of the fighting styles they use in it, can be "identified" I would like to know which of the real styles, the style used by the (Hinata, Neji, Hiashi, Hanabi, Ko, and some others)Hyugas would be "classified as", or likened to the most of the real ones.

The closest to real Naruto gets is Taijutsu (purely physical), though Rock Lee (the resident Taijutsu master) is still leagues beyond what a real human would be capable of. Physically, it seems to be a mismash of different styles (which makes sense, since Naruto seems to be quietly post-apocalyptic --their fighting styles are probably adapted from whatever was passed down for thousands of years).

Though I've often thought you could easily apply the principles of Genjutsu even without chakra-control --using optical illusion, disguise, misdirection, and possibly even hallucinogens as weapons.

Ninjutsu is right out (though the concept of chakra-like bodily energy [that can be controlled, redirected, and even extended away from the body itself] is based on certain forms of eastern occultism, and there just may be something to it).
