FURIOUSFANBOYS.COM - There are only two Space Shuttle missions left. Endeavor goes up later this month, and Atlantis launches her final mission (and the final Space Shuttle launch ever) on June 28th...

Budget cuts aside, I believe it's being replaced by Orion as part of the Constellation program. It's not as elegant as the shuttle, but I believe it's probably a more suitable vehicle for interplanetary travel than the shuttle.

So this is how we know that China will be populating the planets instead of us, :(

I guess in a world where we have to make budget cuts and can't afford everything it makes sense that this would be the thing to go, it directly affects the least amount of people. So I understand, but its still kind of a bummer.

Explain to me how this is anything but an expansion of the Apollo command and service modules? Which was in turn, an expansion of the Mercury and Gemini capsules.

FAIL. Can't go where no living man has gone before. Hence...TERMINATION.

William Shatner confronts Obama who cancelled the NASA Ares Moon landings:

Quote:

Constellation was developed through the Exploration Systems Architecture Study, which determined how NASA would pursue the goals laid out in the Vision for Space Exploration and the NASA Authorization Act of 2005, to send astronauts first to the International Space Station, then to the Moon, and afterward to Mars and other destinations beyond.[2] On February 1, 2010, President Barack Obama announced a proposal to cancel the program, effective with the U.S. 2011 fiscal year budget,[3][4][5][6] but later announced changes to the proposal in a major space policy speech at Kennedy Space Center on April 15, 2010. Obama signed the NASA Authorization Act of 2010 on October 11 which brought the program to an end,[7] although the program is not statutorily cancellable in full by NASA until Congress acts to overturn the original mandate.

NASA planned to use Ares I to launch Orion, the spacecraft intended for NASA human spaceflight missions after the Space Shuttle is retired in 2011. Ares I was to complement the larger, unmanned Ares V, which was the cargo launch vehicle for Constellation. NASA selected the Ares designs for their anticipated overall safety, reliability and cost-effectiveness.[4] However, the Constellation program, including Ares I was canceled in October 2010 by the passage of the 2010 NASA authorization bill.

The Ares V (formerly known as the Cargo Launch Vehicle or CaLV) was the planned cargo launch component of the Constellation program, which was to have replaced the Space Shuttle after its retirement in 2011. Ares V and the smaller Ares I were named after Ares, the Greek god of war, which is the equivalent to the Roman god Mars. Initially, the Ares V would have launched the Earth Departure Stage and Altair lunar lander had NASA returned to the Moon, which was planned for 2019, but would also have served as the principal launcher for missions beyond the Earth-Moon system, including the program's ultimate goal, a manned mission to Mars after 2030.[3] The unmanned Ares V would complement the smaller, and human-rated Ares I rocket for the launching of the 4-6 person Orion spacecraft. Both rockets, deemed safer than the current Space Shuttle, would have utilized technologies developed for the Apollo program, the Shuttle, and the Delta IV EELV programs.[4] However, the Constellation program, including Ares V was canceled in October 2010 by the passage of the 2010 NASA authorization bill.
