Twenty-Sixth floor: Nice folk on the move, Hide! by Jadehand

oh1 my mum found some work i did in primary school andf gave it back to me a few years ago - it was a project on Britain and our little patch of it - starting from where i was born, if i'd been on any holidays, a history of britain and what we like about it.

well, i lived in birkenhead 'which is not nice' and hollidayed in Wales 'with sheep and fields and my uncle, and liked that britan had so many dragons. my favorites were the one who lived in the park.

it had very neatly coloured in maps (i can actually picture myself tongue out concentrating hard on staying in the lines) some very pretty pictures of the dragons, and a lovely marbled ink cover.

I want to go back to primary school - i like that version of britain.

Did anyone see that film with Christain Bale in where nasty dragons invade britain and destroy everything? I though it was alright, apart from that wierd pumped up guy who kept grunting all the time, he kinda ruined it for me. Less grunting, more dragons!

I used to like manga a lot, but my interest has faded. I still consider Ghost in the Shell to be really cool. I like the existentialist touch. I was always noticing the dumbing down when I watched animes. I don't like it when there are motivations and politics that are crucial and yet unexplained. I felt like there was some translator in Japan who thought that gaijin minds are incapable of digesting issues of any complexity. Then again I look at most of America and think he may be right. A presidential election got stolen in plain sight of every one and no one noticed.

If we are going traveling I'm going to Iceland and then on to somewhere else.

It had moments, but I had plausibility issues with the story. Okay, dragons I can believe, but the helicopter, no. Helicopters are extremely dependant on spare parts, well refined fuel and a large crew of service professionals. In a post apocalyptic world there will be no helicopters.

Oh the grunting guy was Matthew McConnahey, from Sahara, U-571, A Time to Kill. Apologies if i misspelled the last name.

Don't feel ashamed that you said you wanted to see a man naked. It just allows us men to be more comfortable when we say we want to see a woman naked.

ah, Matthew MConky - i don't know anyone who can spell his name, which is silly as its very simple, not like M. Night Shyamalan. I just don't think anyone is that worried.

Didn't he get arrested for playing the bongo's naked?

But yes, i reign of fire, the only thing i remember is that his constant grunting annoyed me. The helicopter thing was strange, but i didn't realise why till now, what you say makes sense i suppose.

I liked the bit where they are acting out Star Wars though, that was amusing.

Can you imagine if Bush gets what he wants for christmas and we all end up in some post apocalyptic world, how would re-enactments of the dino/this land scene go down without dinos?

I had problems with the fact that those things weren't dragons. They were wyvernes (having only two legs, and needing to crawl around on their thumbs like bats). Right genus (draco wyvernus), wrong species (draco sapiens).

Well, real dragons can shape-shift, as Haku demonstrates in Spirited Away. This is why nobody sees them anymore --they hide their true forms. What, you didn't think they were extinct, did you? Like Cylons, they look, act, and feel human. You could walk right past one and never know.

(In fact, the script I'm currently working on includes a dragon who spends most of the story in human form. In my head, she kinda looks like Robin here.)

I know Oriental Dragons all come from China, and the further they travel away from China the more claws they lose, which is why Korean dragons have four claws and Japanese dragons have three.

Actually, most Chinese dragons have four claws. It's only the Imperial Dragon that's allowed to have five.

The Dragon Genesis
In the beginning, there was the Egg.

The Egg hatched, sending forth torrents of shell and fluid, and from the Egg was born the Great Mother, Tiamat.

The shell and fluid of the egg scattered throughout the empty universe. The shells collapsed into dust, burning with the flames of Tiamat's Birth. Aeons passed, and the dust congealed, the flame within it igniting into stars. As the stars grew in mass, more of the Egg dust was pulled into them, forming whirlpools of dust and flame. Tiamat, still young in those days, saw these disks, and reached out to touch them with her claws. Where her claws touched them, the disks clung, forming planets, which orbited the stars, were nurtured by them, and were finally consumed by them.

When she saw that all of these planets were mere Rock and Fire, Tiamat was saddened, and wept. Her tears fell to the planets, and became Water, and her sobs became the Wind.

Rock gathered Water in a basin within itself, imbuing it with substance from Rock's own body. Fire burned in the stellar furnace, sending out heat to stir the Wind, and Wind's furious motion eventually drew a spark. This lightning, born of the First Elements, but not one of them, touched the Water, and the Water gave forth Life.

Time passed, and Life grew strong on many worlds. The living things grew and were changed by the Fire, and the Wind, and the Rock, and the Water, each family of life finding its place. The Fire destroyed the weak, and tempered the strong, teaching the lesson of determination in the face of terror. The Wind caressed the gentle, and carried Life to new homes, and teaching it to share in the wonder of beauty. The Rock provided the strong foundation, challenging Life to hold tenaciously to even its smallest foothold. The Water brought forth sustenance, but held it within itself, forcing Life to adapt and change like a flowing river.

In time, on one of these worlds, great creatures arose, mighty and powerful. Because these creatures were beautiful in form to Tiamat, the world that birthed them became especially loved by Her. But still she was unsatisfied, for the creatures on this world could not know her. They had blood, and life, and spirit, but they had no souls. Without souls, these creatures could not know fear, or hatred, but nor could they know hope.

And so, Tiamat created an Egg out of herself, and sent it to her favoured world. Where the Egg landed, it unleashed dragon-flame, searing away the beautiful creatures. The creatures that remained were strange in form, but they were born of Earth; stubborn and enduring. They refused to perish, and Tiamat loved them as much as she had loved the beautiful ones.

When the Egg hatched, four Daughters emerged. The Wyrm, the Lung, the Quetzal, and the Sphinx. Like all children, these daughters soon quarrelled. Knowing that they could not remain where they were, the sisters spread out over the world, each finding their place and birthing a great race of dragons.

The Wyrm travelled north, bringing fire to warm the cold lands. The Lung travelled east, finding the balance between water and land. The Sphinx went south, to where sand and rock stood bare before the heavens. The Quetzal was carried to the west on great winds, finding a fertile continent across the seas.

Each of the sisters had brought with them one of the four fragments of Tiamat's Egg, and wherever these shells passed, Tiamat's own power flowed from them and into the living world. When this magic flowed out, it swirled and eddied, and these ripples, in time, became the Fay, beings of pure magic.

The other creatures, who had survived the Egg's arrival, continued to grow, being shaped by the elements as their predecessors had. They remained homely, and weak before the Dragons, yet Tiamat's descendants had inherited not just her power, but her benevolence as well. The Dragon races brought the Fragments together, praying to Tiamat to bestow her gift upon these animals. Tiamat heard the prayer, and was moved with pride at her children's kindness.

And so, Tiamat took a portion of her own spirit, and touched the flames to the creatures of Earth. With souls came the risk of fear, and hatred, but they also carried hope and, bestowed in honour of the selflessness of children, they carried the greatest of all possible gifts; the capacity for Love.

Each of the Four races spoke a word to give Love its form. From the Wyrm's brood came the Love that burns lovers with Passion. From the Sphinx comes the Love that has Endurance longer than timeless rock itself. The Lung made the patient Love that can overcome any obstacle not through force, but through quiet Perseverance. Finally, the Quetzal gave the Defiance of the open air, so that Love might never bow to distance or obstruction. From Tiamat herself came the Power that allows Love to create or destroy entire worlds, and to embrace pain, defy hatred, and overcome fear.

For the Chinese New Year we had Lion Dances in the Atrium of the museum like that - two dragons, one other dancer, and i forget what he was called, and a full set of drums, absolutely fascinating. Only problem was that hey did it right infront of the desk, so on one hand, great, no-one could get to the desk through the crowd to pester me while i was watching them, on the other hand, I was almost deaf ten minutes in, and the other dancer (not the lions) jumped onto the desk and made me kiss him on the cheek before he'd go away, and this with all the attendants and one of my managers watching.

Grrrrrrr....

Are you going to go crazy then, dress like crap and start glowing at people?

You can tell the difference between a Dragon and a Lion dance, dragons are several people and they hold the Dragon on a pole, a Lion is two people, one head one tail and they wear the Lion costume a bit like one of those pantomime horses.

The other guy I have no idea. I had to do my demonstration next to some of those drums, so I know what you mean about the noise.

The eye dotting is a ceremony; it's supposed to imbue the Dragon/Lion with its spirit.

Ooh! Those sounds like fun. I've never seen a Chinese New Year celebration.

I like those bun things they eat, though. What are they called? With the red bean paste inside. My vietnamese friend made them for us.

I hate living in the south, there's no culture here. Everything's (very literally) black and white. Soooo boring.

Where do you go?

My college had more international students than african american students. But we had a large Korean population. Only, they all moved as a herd, it was hard to get to know any of them.

Are you ready for this? I go to... the University of Utah.

It's kinda pathetic how caucasian our campus is. But I love that the University is pretty liberal. Everyone seems to be pretty open minded and most students seem to have experienced some kind of culture outside of the Salt Lake Valley (which is, admittedly, quite unique).

So, all in all, it could be much worse. *shudders at the thought of BYU*

Even if U of U is 99% causcasian, at least it's a good school!

my area is mostly white (

) folk, with american indians next and only a sprinkling of black or hispanic people.

Haha! Yeah. You know, BYU is a great school, I'm sure, and I can't bag on it too much because I have friends that go there, and it does promote/harbor/foster the religion to which I belong.(oh, hopefully you all won't stop talking to me now that you know my religious affiliation--not that I think you're shallow enough to do that, but it is a tetchy subject.)
It doesn't help me very much BYU has an excellent Art History program while the U of U emphasizes the sciences. But, I do LOVE the University of Utah. They have some amazing programs. They are *puffs her chest for the boast* one of the 50 Research 1 Universities in the United States. They were the home of the 2002 Olympic Winter Games opening and closing ceremonies, as well as home to the torch. Their fine arts program is growing (good news for me!!). It's a beautiful campus, too, with a fantastic view of the city and the mountains. That's all I can really think of off the top of my head, but I KNOW there are more.

Yay for school!
