JEZ

Hi All,

I’ll try to keep this short (but I know it’ll be long) and apologise in advance for any misdirections I may take.

I’m new to the whole Serenity/Firefly phenomenon as I live in South Australia, never got to see Serenity in the cinemas and am pretty sure Firefly never made it to our TV screens. I happened to pick up Serenity about a month ago – loved it completely. Checked out the web and found various sites including this one to get some background. Went hunting and couldn’t find Firefly in any store so I got it online – loved it even more completely – fave eps are Trash and Out of Gas.

I had some time yesterday and watched the bonus features from the movie and the TV series and I get most of what was said, but coming in so late to it all it’s a bit like arriving at a dinner party when the coffee’s been served and you’re wondering if it was a good party while it lasted, what happened, are there any of those little mints or cookies left?

I gathered from the bonus features the series and movie have a pretty big following and a bit was given about attempts to resurrect it or do follow-up movies. On the movies bonus features was a Q&A by Joss in Sydney where he basically said the series probably wouldn’t be resurrected but he’d love to make more movies – what, if anything has been happening on that front?

I’m 29 and gathered the fan base comprises older teens upwards from the Q&A audience in Sydney – is that about right, say mid-20s to mid-40s?

The one question I was waiting for but never heard was how much money it would take from a third party to convince a movie studio to make a sequel. This stems from the “how much would you give” poll on this site. Have people tried raising money to do that? If so then what’s happening on that front?

It kept me up last night thinking about how you’d raise that kind of money and the two ideas that occurred were based on Adam Baldwin selling his scripts – worldwide internet donations or a lottery. If $10 million was needed then 1 million donations or tickets at $15 each to ensure the figure was reached, with anything above $10 million used for operating the website, sending out a receipt, which could be a collectable and reduce fraud/non-payment? and all else given to charity. Set the site so you could donate/buy for yourself or as presents, run it over 6 months, with a 3 month early bird prize draw (signed pictures, coats, whatever) and say 5 main prizes of visiting the cast for a weekend? I don’t know. Whatever percentage of the money put into the movie was from donations/lottery, that percentage of profit could also be donated?

It’s just you guys and gals seem so committed, as are the cast and crew to get something going. I’d spend probably $10/week on a lottery ticket and a couple of scratchies with no guarantee of anything. I’d be more likely to donate or buy a few tickets in a lottery if I knew the outcome would be a movie I would want to see with the added bonus of possibly winning a prize or two. Our lottery here has a 1 in 8 million chance of winning, I’d go for a draw more if I had a 1 in a million chance. Hell, if it worked, imagine the warm inner-glow you’d feel sitting there watching something you played a part in creating, whilst sticking it those who said it couldn’t be done again. Either way, it would have to be set up by Joss or his associates as a guarantee the money would be used right and true.

So I guess this is just idle nonsense and I apologise again for my misdirection. Any glimmer of hope, is better than none.

Take it easy and take care

There's no place I can be since I found Serenity.

First off, welcome to the 'verse, we need all the Browncoat recruits we can get.

Rest assured you are not the first to think of such a project, and it does seem to be a doable thing, and yet it also has the potential for fraud and malfeasance. I'm just waiting for the day a dedicated Browncoat wins the lottery and calls Joss up with an offer.

However, nearly everyone agrees at this point in time that our best bet on a sequel is simply spreading the signal further. Tell everyone you know about Firefly and Serenity, plan viewing parties, loan out your dvds (many of us have multiple copies for that purpose). Get people hooked on the 'verse, and make sure they buy their own dvds. Money in the bank for Universal is the most likely way for them to think a sequel is a viable proposition.

Whatever you do, keep flying.
