After watching Firefly I'm determined to use Chinese swear words as second nature. So can anyone here tutor me on good words and how to pronounce them?

Mal: Nice shot.

Jayne: I was aiming for his head.

if you go to all the different communities here, there is one that has a list of tons of chinese words and phrases... they are pretty easy to figure out. hope that helps you!

MAL: This is my scrap of nowhere. You go on and find your own.
SAFFRON: You can't just leave me here, on this
lifeless piece of crap moon...
MAL: Sure I can.
SAFFRON: I'll die.
MAL: Well, as a courtesy, you might start
getting busy on that, cause all this chatter ain't doin' me any kindness.

I live on the edge of a large Cantonese community so some terms are similar.

Our family *loved* that Firefly used Chinese throughout the show ... personally, I love the idea that a non-Latin/Greek culture was sufficiently permeated through the 'Verse that much of their language was 'common knowledge', even if it wasn't exactly the main language of commerce.

My students this semester include two Cantonese-speakers and two Mandarin-speakers, so I'm planning to hit them up for correct pronunciation lessons.

I've gotten quite a bit of use, and laughs out of my Chinese. And it's all Firefly's fault.

Then again I can swear in about 14 languages so it comes easlylike to me. I guess I just swear a lot...hmmm.

I'm a lot more comfortable using swear words that no one would really catch on to ... and around here, *lots* of folks would get the Chinese ones clear as a bell! I've considered committing some of the Shakespearean ones to memory (don't ask ... I can't remember any offhand!)

Pretty much the same thing here, knowing curses in foreign languages, especially obscure ones, allows me to truely express my feelings in social situations where just coming out and saying,"Okay you're a real " would get me strange looks at best.

When I'm not sure which ones I can get away with I always fall back on Farsi, the chances of little old ladies at the mall knowing what I'm saying is one in a very large number that way.

I'm trying to remember where the Farsi language is spoken ... I have a creeping suspicion there are a number of people around here who speak that one, too.

I do have handy my "Latin for All Occasions", which includes useful gems like:

Catapultam habeo. Nisi pecuniam omnem mihi dabis, ad caput tuum saxum immane mittam.

Translates as: I have a catapult. Give me all the money, or I will fling an enormous rock at your head.

This is the best site I know of for chinese translations. You do however have to go through each script searching for the phrases and words you are interested in.

http://fireflychinese.home.att.net/

Since I already did this, I thought I would post a few here for you.

Jien tah duh guay (Like hell)
Hwoon dahn (Bastard)
Ai ya (Damn)
Chur ni-duh (Screw you)
Guay (Hell)
Duh liou mahng (Sonofabitch)
Tyen-sah (Goddamn)
Lao Tyen yeh (Jesus)
Tzao-goa (Damn it)
Wuo duh Ma (Mother-of-Jesus)
Ta ma duh (F**k me blind)
Bee-jway (Shut up)
Nee mun doh bee-jway (Everybody shut the hell up)
luh-suh (Garbage)
Fei-oo (Junk)
Gao se (Crap)
Niou-se (Cow poop)
Fay hwa (Nonsense)
Ai ya! Hwai leh! (Shit on my head)
Nee ta ma duh. Tyen-shia suo-yo duh run doh gai si. (F**k everyone in the universe to death)
Hwai (Shit)
Fay-fay duh Pee-yen (a babboon's ass-crack)

I know not all of these are swear words, but they can be fun to say none-the-less, in times of surprise.

I grew up speaking Cantonese ...did not learn American English until 5 or 6.
When I was a child I used to hang out with my father's friends. I became very skilled at cussing in the gutter level in Cantonese by 5-years of age...That is until my mother caught me, and in no uncertain terms, I was informed "girls do not talk like that" I never knew what I was saying until I was in my late teens. You do not want to swear in Cantonese. I discovered it was much more explicit than the "f- you" slang. Chinese to me is not a language of abstracts. Again I say it is very explicit form of cussing and I do not recommend it.

Well, the Chinese don't have nine hells, that's the Greeks. With that in mind, you should shift the idiom to the eight million hells of Chinese mythology.

I'm actually in Chinese 1, so I have a handy-dandy pinyang thingie! With this, you can find out how to say qingwao cao de liumang (something I'm sure is quite offensive to frog enthusiasts).

Commonly Mispronounced Consonants (the rest are quite self explanatory):

Zhi: Jur
Shi: Shur
Si: Suh (ssssuh)
Ji: Gee
Qi: Ch
Xi: Shee (as in sheet)
Zi: Tzuh
Ci: Tsuh
U (with the dots on top): Eueww

Chi: Chur
Ri: Rur

Vowels:

A: ah
Er
Eng: ung
Ang: ahng
En: n
An: Ahn
Ei: Ey (As in Hey)
Ao: Ow
U: Ooh
Ou: Oh..
Ie: Yeah
Yi: Ee
Ai: Ah-ee (quickly)
O: O! (Like in God!)
E: Uh

Qingwe cao de liumang (roughly and hesitantly): Ch-uhng-wuh tsao duh leeuh-mahng
Zaijin: Tzai-jin

I'm sure every single Mandarin speaker looks down on me now. xD

I believe that that is the direct translation, but I speak chinese, and no one really ever says that. They say more of a "wo xi huan ni" (xi is shee and ni is nee) which is I like you. Or "wo hen xi huan ni" (hen is hun) which is I really like you.

Do not touch anything unnecessarily. Beware of pretty girls in dance halls and parks who may be spies, as well as bicycles, revolvers, uniforms, arms, dead horses, and men lying on roads -- they are not there accidentally.
So the moral is...be paranoid.
