My family and I were discussing the different personalities of the crew and thought how music identifies a person somewhat.
So, who do you think say, Book would listen to... Maybe the Brooklyn Tabernacle Choir, but I'd bet he's a closet Billy Joel fan. Maybe Mal would like ZZ Top.

Book?? No, Book would be a straight John Coltrane man . Especially "A Love Supreme"-an album of the gretest jazz ever dedicated to God.

Simon - Very Classical

Kaylee - Southern Rock . Skynard, Alabama

Wash - 80's alternative U2, REM, Tears for Fears

Zoe - Soul, The Commitments, Billie Holiday, Etta James, Natalie Cole

Mal - Johnny Cash, Bob Dylan, Possibly Garth Brooks

River - Classical & a guilty appreciation for the Beatles & Simon & Garfunkel

Jayne - Zepplin, Doors, Def Leppard, Styx, Bon-Jovi - Especially the YOung Guns 2 soundtrack

Inara - Asian Opera, Salsa, Willie & Lobo, Sting, Sarah Maclahan (sp), Dido (she likes the video for White Flag with David Boareanz)

Just my thoughts

Wash-Beach Boys

Jayne-a closet Judds fan. He only listens to them in his bunk so nobody can see him tearing up at Love Will Build a Bridge.

Simon-Classical, especially Mahler and Beethoven, more to this boy than meets the eye.

River-Philip Glass

I see River listening to Mozart, Bach, Scarlatti - lots of intricate harmonies, mathematical precision - and analyzing the heck out of it.

Personally, I think Simon lets loose once in a while in private, and rocks out to Van Halen, Aerosmith, and a touch of Slayer.

Mal is a definite Joe Satriani and Carlos Santana fan.

River goes back and forth between Wagner/Beethoven/Mozart, and insane techno house music.

Kaylee's a Kid Rock fan, with a secret Backstreet Boys crush.

Book has a shelf filled with very esoteric stuff--Mongolian Duotone throat singing, Japanese koto, etc.

Wash is a Skynyrd, Allman, and Doobie fan.

Zoe doesn't relax long enough to listen to music, I think she prefers gunshot recording.

Inara has quiet stuff, like Enya and her ilk.

Jayne likes anything, as long as it's loud.

Shouldn´t Kaylee (stereotypically) be listening to 70´s Flowerpower-"Feel good"-music?

Wash might favour the "Top Gun" soundtrack.

my opinions:

Inara: like continental indian music

mal: Joe satriani and other instrumental stuff, although he has a secret passion for some country and western.

River: Muse, The coral, weirdy "different" music.

Wash: Kula Shaker and hippee music.

Jayne: Creed and Alter Bridge - heavy music.

Zoe: Country and Western with some rock mixed in.

Book: Johnny Cash and Elvis.

Simon: Classical.

Kaylee: Kula Shaker, Feeder, The BEATLES and other hippee stuff.

Mal: Country, mostly. I'm thinking the classics, like Hank Williams (Sr., not Jr.), and Johnny Cash. I'm also thinking classic punk, especially The Clash.

Zoe: This would be kind of hard, you don't see as much into her character as you do the others. But in any case, I'm thinking sixties and seventies soul, like Otis Redding and Al Green. Definitely some strong female influences, like Nina Simone, Koko Taylor, or Etta James. Perhaps some newer artists, like Me'shell NdegeOcello, Erykah Badu, or Jill Scott.

Wash: Since Wash is more than a little off the beaten path, there are two obvious ways to go. One would be new wave, maybe Squeeze. But what I'm definitely thinking is funk. Particularly Parliament Funkadelic and The Ohio Players. Maybe even throw in some rap. I can definitely see Wash jamming to Tupac in the cockpit.

Jayne: A lot similar to Mal, only with some metal and classic rock thrown in, like Rob Zombie and Led Zeppelin. Maybe some southern rock like Lynyrd Skynyrd. And definitely Kid Rock. Fits his persona.

Kaylee: Even though pop queens and boy bands would be the obvious choice, I'm thinking maybe bands like Fall Out Boy, All-American Rejects, or Simple Plan.

Simon: If he has any musical taste at all, it would probably be classical. Still, being with Kaylee, there might be some hope for him.

Inara: I'm thinking Inara would be big on world music, African or Indian, perhaps. Maybe some Tori Amos, Alanis Morrisette, or Fiona Apple for when she's pissed at Mal.

Book: The obvious choice here would be gospel, though there are some really good gospel singers, like Mahalia Jackson or Marion Williams. But I'm also thinking Book likes to cut loose a little, so I go with the blues, particularly Johnny Lee Hooker or Son House. Maybe some jazz as well, like Miles Davis, since Book seems to be a refined man.

River: She may have been raised with classical, but I'm thinking River is a hardcore techno freak. BT, The Crystal Method, and definitely Fischerspooner.

At last.
We can retire and give up
this life of crime.

Mal - Gotta go with the Johnny Cash vote - the last verse of 'Highwayman' is so damn him.

Simon - dunno why, but I think he might have a dark Sisters of Mercy type thing - perhaps it was Sean's leather jacket on the dvd I used to drink with medics - they scare me... Billy Idol - 'White Wedding' or Death in Vegas 'Broken Little Sister'

Jayne - also Johnny Cash and the like. 'Sixteen Tons' of Cobb-like goodness, please...

River - anything she can dance to. Got a little fic in mind for this one, actually. Oh, hang on - Placebo 'Meds'

Kaylee - Blondie, for 'I want that man' and Katie Melua for 'shy boy'

Zoe - I reckon Wash got her into listening to goofy guitar stuff, and the Beatles. She's probably a hard-ass rock chick at heart. U2 'Angel of Harlem' - big vocals, Billie Holliday and some slammin' guitar.

Mal has a soft spot for Willie Nelson, too.
"You Were Always on My Mind" really gets to him.

He's never been able to tease Zoe out of her secret love for opera. She grew up singing, after all. That stone-cold killer thing came later.

We've seen Kaylee in her bunk at the end of Shindig -- she turns on music just like what they were playing at the shindig.

Badger's going to kill me for telling you this, but he's a Nancy Sinatra fan.

Pursuin' the life of my high-ridin' heroes,
I burned up my childhood days.
I learned of all the rules of the modern-day drifter,
Don't you hold on to nothin' too long.
Just take what you need from the ladies, then leave them,
With the words of a sad country song.
My heroes have always been cowboys.
And they still are, it seems.
Sadly, in search of, but one step in back of,
Themselves and their slow-movin' dreams.

Cowboys are special with their own brand of misery,
From being alone too long.
You could die from the cold in the arms of a nightman,
Knowin' well that your best days are gone.
Pickin' up hookers instead of my pen,
I let the words of my years fade away.
Old worn-out saddles, and 'old worn-out memories,
With no one and no place to stay.

My heroes have always been cowboys.
And they still are, it seems.
Sadly, in search of, but one step in back of,
Themselves and their slow-movin' dreams.

TWILIGHTJACK

In order to surmise the crew's musical preferences, you must first work out what music means to them. Each character is certain to have a different relationship to music itself, and therefore to their "favorite" genres and artists.

Mal: Mal dances to remember, and most of what he has to reflect upon is a big old scar-knot of hurt and disappointment. He's almost assuredly a fan of blues and old country-western (note: NOT country music as we understand it). I see his collection including a bunch Muddy Waters, John Lee Hooker, Johnny Cash, Patsy Cline, perhaps some Billie Holliday, etc. Also, I see some Tom Waits, Leonard Cohen, Van Morrison, the Dirty Three, and Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds thrown in there. He's also got every album that Elvis ever recorded (and if you tell anyone you'll wish you'd been fed to Reavers a piece at a time, dong ma?)

Simon: Simon listens to music to relax and tune out, to take a break from the constant stress and anxiety that forms the core of his being. Here, I predict a touch of New Age Electro-Jazz, cutting in on the Romantic era symphonies. Mahler and Beethoven make an appearance, since he does harbor an occasional burst of grandeur, but his special love is for groups like Shadowfax and Hiroshima, as well as Renaissance-era chamber music. Ethereal and calming seems Simon's main need here.

Wash: Wash loves music cause he's got a song in his heart. It ain't music if he can't sing along (usually loudly, off-key, and screwing up half the lyrics). He prefers a catchy tune, high energy, and a fun refrain. Put him down for Queen, They Might Be Giants, Lynard Skynard, the Eagles, the Beatles, and Roth-era Van Halen.

Kaylee: Our resident daydreamer/Romantic, Kaylee loves to feel a song in her bones. Give her melody and passion and something to stir up little pieces of wrapping-paper in her belly. That means that her tastes run pretty eclectic. She can fall in love with anything, it just has to strike that right chord. Janis Joplin and Joni Mitchell are in an eternal tie for her official top spot, though; don't ask me why.

Okay, four down, five to go. I'll do the rest tomorrow.

Well I can't say as I rightly know myself, but there are songs/music that for me evoke certain aspects of the characters.

Mal: I'm a good old rebel comes to mind (I have an album of classic western music & this song really fits), as does Willie Nelsons "Midnight Rider".

Wash: Music that moves...he's at peace when he's in Zen-piloting mode. "Eastbound & Down", "Ballad of Thunder Road" "Life is a Highway" makes me think of Wash as does "Mighty Wings" from Top Gun.

Zoe: Another nod to Top Gun, "Danger Zone", "I'm Holding out for a Hero", & in reference to Wash.."Let's Hear it for the Boy"

Simon: Classical Japanese & Chinese (I'd do songs but I'm not in the mood to go through my CD's right now.)

Jayne: "Mountian Music" comes to mind as does "Bubba Shot the Jukebox", "If the House is a Rockin".

Book: is tough "Unforgettable" & "One Tin Soldier", maybe "Burning Bridges" (Theme from Kelly's Heroes), Styx's "Show me the way"

Kaylee: I'm not sure why but "Under the Boardwalk", "Love willl Turn you Around", & of all things "Rainbow Connection" by Kermit the Frog (Also I think she is a Jimmy Buffet fan)

River: "It's a Lie", "I will find you-Clannad", actually Clannad & the Chieftans music evokes alot of the feeling of River.

Inarra: I really don't know any music that evokes her, at least for me. She's probably the most difficult character to understand in the whole series.

Hehehehe Perfect!

I like to imagine Inara listening to this beautiful & sad song by Katie Melua while thinking of Mal:

'The Closest Thing To Crazy'

How can I think I'm standing strong,
Yet feel the air beneath my feet?
How can happiness feel so wrong?
How can misery feel so sweet?
How can you let me watch you sleep,
Then break my dreams the way you do?
How can I have got in so deep?
Why did I fall in love with you?

This is the closest thing to crazy I have ever been
Feeling twenty-two, acting seventeen,
This is the nearest thing to crazy I have ever known,
I was never crazy on my own…
And now I know that there's a link between the two,
Being close to craziness and being close to you.

How can you make me fall apart
Then break my fall with loving lies?
It's so easy to break a heart;
It's so easy to close your eyes.
How can you treat me like a child
Yet like a child I yearn for you?
How can anyone feel so wild?
How can anyone feel so blue?

This is the closest thing to crazy I have ever been
Feeling twenty-two, acting seventeen,
This is the nearest thing to crazy I have ever known,
I was never crazy on my own…
And now I know that there's a link between the two,
Being close to craziness and being close to you.

...and being close to you
...and being close to you.

mal - beatles (we know), early kris kristofferson, taj mahal, emmmylou harris once in a while... kaylee 's influence.

book - mahlia jackson and, um, ministry! (hhe rocks out to them for sure!)

zoe - is suspicious of music - and probably has very bland tastes... liike someone who just grabs something from the services to drive with - oh anything will do, got a long drive etc.

wash - very eclectic reckons he's high Fidelity in Space... great geek arguments wit Mr Universe over appropriate musical choices.

River - Lisa Germano, Veruca Salt, Rockbitch

Kaylee - worships the shrine of gram parsons, digs the allmans, steve miller.

Inara - prefers live music - has a truly horrid collection of music to meditate to 'inner feelings' type cds.

Simon: Trio Bulgarka, Tuvian Throat singing, various french viol concertos.

jayne - springsteen - and he sings along with the right words to the wrong songs.

Yo/Saff listens to Dannielle Dax... and Betty Smith.

I bet Inara loves Muse. Esp. "Starlight", as it would remind her of Mal. She also probably goes in for Coldplay and Fleetwood Mac, as well as ambient stuff. As for guilty pleasures, I bet she's a total Madonna/Heart/Pat Benetar girl.

River: Garbage is obvious, as is Bjork and David Bowie. I can also see her getting into Simon and Garfunkel, and maybe some Moby/Portishead and techno.

Mal: Tom Petty, the Foo Fighters, Johnny Cash, Sufjan Stevens, Garth Brooks, and in quiet moments when he thinks everyone else is asleep, Live (but sshhh, only Inara really knows that).

Zoe: like she ever relaxes and listens to music.

Wash: The Beatles, with a fondness for Luda and Meatloaf, only because he makes no apologies, and hell, he's Wash.

Jayne: Aerosmith and Pearl Jam (the latter b/c he doesn't really have to pay attention to the lyrics other than singing along to the chorus of "Evenflow").

Book: Probably up for anything.

Kaylee: She's a musical chameleon. She'll give anything a try, but she'd probably have a weakness for 80's new wave and pop, and
Fiona Apple.

Simon: He probably goes in for classical, but I'm sure he shares similar tastes with River. I can see him liking Bjork, and maybe some Jack Johnson. And Gwar, just to throw you guys off :)

I like the Pearl Jam idea especially since he won't be able to decipher Vedder's lyrics without crib notes. i.e. "Yellow Ledbetter"

For some reason I imagine Book listening to Jimi Hendrix...maybe it's the hair?

Funny, I was just about to start a thread on this myself...

Zoe: India.Arie, Motown, blues, maybe a little alternative.

Wash: Beach Boys, Hawaiian music, reggae.

Inara: World music.

River: Some classical, a little bit of new age, heavy on Celtic music, some techno, anything she can dance to.

Mal: Classic country (I see him being a huge Johnny Cash fan),

Jayne: Lynnrd Skynnrd, .38 Special and other Southern Rock groups.

Kaylee: Heavy on pop-country (Shania Twain, Faith Hill, Martina McBride), some boy-bands, new wave,

Simon: Classical, classic rock, Pink Floyd, Oasis, Nirvana.

Book: Gospel, Contemporary Christian Music (Mercy Me, Michael W. Smith, etc.), Duke Ellington, John Coltrane.

Mal: Lynyrd Skynayrd, Creedence Clearwater Revival, he's got a soft spot for hometown country music as he went to many a Barn Dance on Shadow, and his mother wanted him to know some culture so he knows a little Beethovan... no one knows about the Beethovan though, he keeps that to himself.

Zoe: She doesn't listen to much music, usually it's whatever everyone else has on (Wash turned her into a Beatles fan) but she does listen to John Legend when she has a rare moment to herself.

Inara: She never listened to anything other than what was considered 'Core music' until Wash blared St. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band on over the sound system of Serenity. Alot of classical music, as well as Chinese orchestral and traditional Middle Eastern music (she is after all fluent in Arabic and from the royal line of Saud). She favors opera as well, La Boheme being a favorite.

Kaylee: She likes anything with an up beat, as long as it isn't angry she'll probably listen to it, and it is has a good beat there's a chance she may dance to it as well. However over the years since she grew up with country music she has favored the band Sugarland (the song We Run capturing her spirit when it comes to romance perfectly)

Wash: He had every Beatles album listed and had annoyed Mal with Lucy In the Sky With Diamonds over the com system more than once. Wash also loved the Mamas and the Papas and had a love for funk. Tower of Power was one of his favorites and any time he had a dream about Zoe in the romantic fashion, Chaka Khan's Tell Me Something Good more often then naught was the music that came with it.

Jayne: Jayne loves guns, booze, women and bars. Toby Keith, Trace Atkins (a firm believer in the Honky Tonk Badonkadonk) and George Thorogood are his favorites. He doesn't tend to stray from that list.

Simon: Simon was trained from a young age in classical music, he can play an exceptional Claire De Lune (Debussy) and has been called and piano phenominom with his rendition of Rhapsody in Blue (Gershwin), his favorites round out with Beethovan, Chopin and Rachmaninov. Get a few drinks in him and it's a different story, he's a huge Sinatra and Queen fan. Get him really drunk, he can slur through a few Elton John songs as well as half of Les Miserables.

River: River likes just about anything. From Elvis, to Imogean Heap, to the Beatles, to the Craberries, to Vitamin String Orchestra, to German Techno Pop, There's not alot she hasn't listened to.

Your Indian Pirate Lord,
Ash
