I'm thinkning of getting a tattoo of a chinese symbol and the pics that I found, the symbols go side to side but some go straight down. Which is the right way??

By the by this probably been asked so many times but what's the serenity chinese symbol?

Chinese can be written in either direction, depending on aesthetics or logistics.

"Serenity" can be written many different ways. (Consider how many ways in English there are of saying serene - tranquil, peaceful, calm, etc.) Currently, there are two "official" logos. The first is the original logo from the series: 平静 is pronounced ping2jing4

The second is the newest logo from the movie: 宁静 is pronounced ning2jing4

There's also the much older 祇 (pronounced qi2), but I think that's rarely used.

For tattoos, make sure you get inked by someone experienced in Chinese writing; otherwise, you could end up with "virulent oyster" instead of "serenity" tattooed on ya.

Cheers.

As I said, there are many different ways of writing the word, dear. Which you get is entirely dependent upon what it is you're after. If you want "Serenity" from Firefly or the movie, then use the ones I posted previously because those are the official logos. Otherwise, it really doesn't matter which you get, since it can all mean the same thing.

Ann Ning, the one you found describes the state of being in serenity.

Ping Jing and ning jing are used more like adjetives in a sentence structure.

If it's tatoo, I'd say just get the "Jing" character alone. It adequately express calm/silence/serene by itself. And it's a very pretty character.

wow... i had no idea how many differences there were. i wanted those symbols as my tattoo but i might have to do some reconsidering. i dont want to end up like Britney Spears and have a tattoo that means something entirely different.

this was a very impressively thorough response, but I have a question if you'll forgive my lack of knowledge and useless curiosity:

the two "prongs", if you will, on ping2 are pointing upwards [\/], and on a lot of the fan products, they are facing down [/\]. Do you know why this is? or is it just someone's ignorance.

and it there any significant difference between the ning2jing4 and ping2jing4

thanks

it had a kind of poetry to it, sir

It's just a stylistic difference. The up [\/] is the typical form, but, for example, if you use MingLiu font, you only get down [/\].

The difference in meaning is quite subtle. They're both about tranquility and stillness. I know that a peaceful person or a calm ocean is pingjing, and a quiet night or serene life is ningjing.

Hope that helps.
