Goodbye, kind world (George Monbiot) - In common with all those generations which have contemplated catastrophe, we appear to be incapable of understanding what confronts us.

especially Signy, Brenda, Jack, and Kwicko. May the New Year be better than the Old Year! And Wishi, you're a feral pain in the ass, but hopefully life turns around for you and your family.

I've been keeping up with your conversation with Jack. I truly wish for you a good year.

HAS IT NOT OCCURRED TO YOU BY NOW THAT IF YOU HAVE TO RESORT TO LOGICAL FALLACIES AND TROLLING YOUR SO-CALLED ARGUMENTS ARE LIES?

Meh... Happy New Year to everyone.

It was strange this year in this neighborhood.
I saw not one Christmas decoration.

Last night, as the New Year rolled in, there were no fireworks, & no noise.

Maybe it's a sign that 2018 will be ... different :)

There was about a half hour of fireworks here last night.

We had a decent amount of christmas lights on my block. We've never had any Grizwold families on the block.

What WISHI showed were pictures of bobcats. They were never domesticated.

The real ancestor of the housecat is "Felis silvestris lybica", the living descendant of the origin of the common housecat.

The Chinese independently domesticated a similar wild cat called the "leopard cat"

To be very stuffy and correct, these are not "feral" cats because they were never domesticated. They are true wildcats.

Being called "feral" includes the connotation that one cannot "hack it" in modern society and so reverts to a primitive existence. Not sure that there's a compliment in there, but I can understand how someone might think that.

Blah, blah, ablah. Stuffy is right.

Not much difference between a feral cat and a wild cat.

Neither want anything to do with people, and for that...my respects...

Are YOU not a person? Does this mean that you don't want anything to do with yourself? That WOULD explain a lot!

It seems that your view of yourself is somewhat conflicted. Just sayin'.

Anyway, Happy New Year, even if you are a curmudgeon. I'm making a big pot of chicken dumpling soup today; y'all come on over a get a bowlful!

Shouldn't you be making Borscht? Isn't that more appropriate?

You must be pretty bored to be splitting hairs with me....

PS...Put parmesan cheese into the dumplings. It's better than MMm mmm good.

It sure does! How's the weather where you are? Near where older sis is, it's blowing, snowing, colder than a witch's t^t, and the Skyway is closed. Her (two, part-time) jobs closed up early, sent people home/ told them not to come in.

Yep, I like that too. The Polish version, with kielbasa, beets, and cream.

Sounds great! I'll do half the dumplings that way, see what the family decides.

Wind chill is -10 at night, but not much else. We had flurries for a few minutes, but like I said...nothing much sticks until Febuaryish.

Too cold for the kid to walk the dog much, even pretty bundled. She's doing food science, auto mechanics, and basic law right now, so she's staying busy, school-wise.

Interesting curriculum! I wish they had had stuff like that when I was in junior high and high school!

EDITED TO ADD: Oh, that's right, she's being home-schooled. No wonder she's studying such interesting stuff!

I think I mentioned that we picked up a stray. Being what she is (part rat terrier and part chihuahua) she only has one kind of fur: no fluffy underfur to keep her warm. If you can believe it, I actually got a sweater for her because she shivers at 65 F, which is what we thermostat to in the winter. My god, she would survive about 30 seconds in your kind of cold!

Oh btw, I never did put the Parmesan in the dumplings. I was just trying to finish getting the soup done (new recipe) and didn't want to deal with any complications, but soup turned out great (any recipe that calls for a 1/2 c of sherry is a-OK in my book!), which is a good thing because I made a double batch. I wish you could have critiqued it, WISHY!

Will definitely make a batch of dumplings with Parmesan next time, now that I got the hang of the recipe.

And if anyone is still reading this thread ... it's still not too late to hope for a HAPPY NEW YEAR! for everyone.

Yeah, they have hair more like people's, than they do fur. Our rat/chi doesn't have any hair on his balls, I keep wondering how THAT feels.
We have several coats and sweaters for him and he loves them.

This coat is next on my list to get when the others wear out...

Our fur baby looks a LOT like this one, except more of the beige with just short socks of white on his feet. Even has those gold/brown eyes..

OMG you have rat/chi too???

Putting in more beige .... adding white sox .... gotta say: What a sweetie!

We're guessing about our dog's breed because she adopted our yard; we really know nothing about her, but she's 10 pounds of personality. She hunts lizards like a terrier, and is as neurotic as a chihuahua! This is almost exactly what she looks like except she has a palm-sized black splotch on her back. (One of my dog-walking friends say that in Taiwan they would call her "cow spotted" because that's what she looks like.)

Yeah, he's adorably neurotic. He'll do anything for my kid, he's in total love with her. He power struggles with me because he thinks he can outsmart me though. That's typical with male chi's though.

I will say, he is a smart little shit, he actually figured out how to communicate...
He answers questions emphatically yes by licking his chops and no by looking off to the side or to the door. A basic yes or OK he will actually nod his head just a tiny nod or a slow blink. A fake sneeze is a sign of him being indignant, usually because we are slow to walk or feed him. If he tilts his head and blinks one eye it means "I don't know/not really."

I'd be interested if yours does any of the same things when you talk to it?

Same here! When it's really cold outside, Do you want to go for a walk? is answered by her looking off to the side/ hiding her face. But most communication is a whole-body thing ... even dear daughter, who had trouble interpreting human expression, knows that the dog has various "looks".

Quote:

What I find interesting is how dog interacts with each of us. Dear daughter loves to be licked, so dog will wash her hands or feet quite often; while for me ... er, not so much, so dog will ask to be picked up. As for hubby, she kind of velcros herself to his thigh whenever he lies down.

Dog will follow us from room to room, being (as I like to call it) a "couch buddy", "computer buddy", "bed buddy" or "kitchen buddy". Recently, she's gotten decisive about where she wants to go for a walk: If I'm heading in a direction that she doesn't care for, she gets pretty darn mulish and I have to coax/drag her along. So one time last week, I said "OK, where do YOU want to go?" and she led me to her dog-buddies' house about a half-mile away. Yesterday, she led me to her OTHER dog-buddies' house, about a quarter-mile in the other direction. Hmmm... I think she has me trained!

But she's very cooperative: She was attacked by two small dogs that were off-leash and she pulled out of her collar and started running away. No chip, no ID. I've been teaching her a very specific command called "right here!", which I used, and altho everything was telling her to keep running she crouched in the street and allowed me to pick her up. Of course, she got a couple of treats (which I always keep in my pocket for training purposes) for that one! But I'm going to get a harness because this is the second time that a loose dog caused her to pull out of her collar.

Ours does the same thing. I think that's why the power struggle with me, *I* lead him...but hubby is more of a sucker for cute, so he'll go wherever the dog wants to go which is in a LOT of places I won't. We couldn't walk him without a harness, for 11 and a half pounds he can generate about 80 lbs of force (plus, when aggressive dogs come you can just yank them right up). I spend a lot of time trying to break him of ground-hugging when we walk because it drives me nuts...It's so much easier just to drive the five miles to the park in the evening and let him wear himself out then it is to walk him 3 times in this cold...

He'll be 5 in March. We got him from a cousin who never spays her pets and lets them run around, which is what killed his mom...getting hit by a car. I think losing his mom left a mark on him, he will beg for milk occasionally. He'll lead me to the fridge and blink at me until I get him some.
