My sincere belief is that we're done for. We've got a century left, tops. Our inaction has reaped the whirlwind.

Would it be impossible to limit it to 2 degrees C? Maybe not. I think we should try. I've been trying for 30 years.

But people are comfortably numb. Why go vegan when you can get a cheeseburger for a buck?

The video I posted above illustrates why I think it's too late to save us.

Sure, but... funny coincidence: I'm on a week break starting Monday and I am not typing replies on a phone. Line 'em up and I'll get to 'em when get back to a computer.

In the mean time... so about Trump's Fascist view of our Free Press "they are the enemy of the people!" which is an attack on Free speech of a much greater importance than a private company bumping some wing nut off their free service. You don't see that either I suppose? You don't see the liabilities these free services face by allowing people to say anything? Like some crazy believer who posts "Clinton's pedophilia acts in a pizza shop" that encourages someone to go and shoot the place up? What would they be liable for if that f-wad actually killed someone?

Trump can tweet all he wants, he can't do much.

He WOULD do free speech a big favor, tho, if he broke up those giant media and internet monopolies, and maybe we would get some REAL free speech instead of monetized speech for change.

If it's not "free" (as in beer) it's not "free" (as in freedom). Free, as in freedom AND beer, I say!

Rapid Loss of Biodiversity Placing Global Food Supplies at Risk of 'Irreversible Collapse'
"This should be at the top of every news bulletin and every government's agenda around the world."
https://www.commondreams.org/news/2019/02/22/terrifying-rapid-loss-bio
diversity-placing-global-food-supplies-risk-irreversible

According to FAO's study of 91 countries around the world, the loss of thousands of plant and animal species is affecting air and water quality, tree and plant health, and worsening the spread of disease among livestock—all with dangerous implications for the human population and humans' food sources.

"Less biodiversity means that plants and animals are more vulnerable to pests and diseases. Compounded by our reliance on fewer and fewer species to feed ourselves, the increasing loss of biodiversity for food and agriculture puts food security and nutrition at risk," said Jose Graziano da Silva, FAO's director-general.

"Consider biodiversity as a global puzzle," Switzerland's secretary of state for agriculture, Bernard Lehmann, said Friday. "Losing too many pieces makes the picture incomplete. Thus, biodiversity loss for food and agriculture represents a big risk for food security."

Along with the report, FAO shared a video on Twitter outlining the dire implications of biodiversity loss.

"Today only nine crops account for 66 percent of total crop production," the organization said. "Our forests are shrinking. As they disappear so do the plants, insects, and animals they host...Now is the time to act."

The Earth will brush off all that "man" has to offer, like so much dandruff, smile and keep on spinning. We humans might not fare too well, but Mother Earth will keep on spinning.

For her this is a blip on the radar screen. I'm of the mind that a huge asteroid, the global killer, is out there lurking and well on it's way to
our little corner of the universe. We are but a pimple on the ass of the universe, a minor speck of dust in the vastness of space. So, all of this
bullshit doesn't mean a thing in the grand scheme of things.

This isn't an overpopulation problem though. It's really not a money issue either.

I eat extremely cheap compared to your average American, and I never go hungry. 2 years ago I ate like total crap and I was drinking beer by the tanker truck. By all means I should be dead right now. But with a physical job and a huge change in my diet I just got perfect blood work back and my BMI is good.... And that's even after putting on about 10 to 12 pounds I didn't have during the warm months when I was doing a lot of work outside on my days off.

This is really a lazy issue. People are lazy. People like fast food. People like the ease of eating processed and microwave food instead of cooking for themselves.

I don't really care much for cooking, or learning how to cook new things, so my diet is fairly limited right now, but if I were to learn there are many more things I could be adding to my diet that would be good for me that wouldn't break the bank. I make less than $15k per year and I eat better now than I've ever eaten in my life. It is possible, but it's work and a bit of self discipline thrown in for good measure.

And for the love of god, don't drink soda no matter what other crap you're putting in your body.

26 months ago at the peak of my drinking before I quit, I was nearly 225 lbs. A fat sack of shit that had pain all over just from doing nothing. During the summer last year, I was an extremely lean 150 lbs. During the cold months I've bounced around from between 158 and 166 lbs. I've gone from Obese to an athletic build the right way.

Do Right, Be Right. :)

Not too surprising when you compare it to what Orwell predicted back in 1949. Pretty much the only thing in that book he was wrong about was having any chance of spotting the microphones that were always listening.

Maybe he would have predicted that too, but it would have destroyed some major plot points if Winston couldn't actually see them.

Your understanding of the rest of the world is sh*t too. Many of us have already said there may or may not be "collusion." We're not hanging on that. Certainly there was collusion of a kind, but is that kind prosecutable? Probably not. Obstruction though - he's got jail time coming as soon as he's not president. I don't know what Trump loyalists think collusion means. Maybe you can explain. Do you think we're expecting to find a check for his membership dues to Putin's Collusion Club? Do you even understand what it means to be an unwitting asset? I doubt it - prove me wrong. Use all of those iq points you think you have.

The Marching Morons story has a point: We are overclocked hairless apes who are simply not designed to think about or to willingly make significant sacrifices in service of a fuzzy, uncertain hazard that’s decades away. Why would anyone deny this? But unlike in the Marching Morons, it doesn’t necessarily follow that the smarter ape’s only solution is to either deliberately kill off most of the dumber apes or else nature haphazardly kills them. What is the third way?

The United States has reduced per-capita carbon emissions slightly more than Europe, and neither one has managed much reduction at all except when they’re forced to. Nearly all of the reduction since 2000 came during the five-year period when oil prices spiked and the Great Recession killed off economic activity.

In other words, it doesn’t seem as if either the Republican Party or America’s dysfunctional politics is really the problem. So what is? It must be something common to both Europe and the US, and the obvious answer is that we all live in democracies. Roughly speaking, our governments do what the public wants, and the public doesn’t have much interest in reducing carbon emissions. Oh, we say we do, and we’ll support minor things like ETS or CAFE that have a barely noticeable effect on us. We’ll support solar power — if it produces electricity nearly as cheaply as coal. We’ll all buy electric cars — but only when the price comes down and the batteries get better. We’ll check out the energy star rating the next time we buy a new refrigerator. And that’s about it.

A climate plan that requires significant sacrifice might work on planet Vulcan, but not on planet Earth. Assuming otherwise is nonserious. We need a plan that will work with only homo sapiens to carry it out, and that means a plan that takes into account human selfishness and shortsightedness. It means a plan that will appeal to China and India and Brazil and the rest of the world. It means a plan that will somehow reduce atmospheric carbon a lot even while most of us sit around fat, dumb, and happy.

The only such plan I can think of is one that increases global R&D spending on climate mitigation by, oh, 10x or so. Maybe 20x if it’s feasible. This money would be spent on developing new sources of clean energy and energy storage; reducing the price of current sources of clean energy; figuring out ways to remove carbon from the atmosphere; and pretty much anything else that seems remotely useful. The fruits of this research would be turned over to the private sector for free, and they would then compete to sell it all over the globe. This would harness human selfishness instead of fighting it. It’s not guaranteed to work, but unlike the Green New Deal and similar manifestos, at least it’s not guaranteed to fail.

Bullshit. You've been towing that Russian line along with all the others in here for two years now. Just because the media is starting to backpedal because it looks like that's not going to happen, don't pretend that you weren't.

We've got two years of your posts in "The Countdown to Impeachment" thread to sift through. You'd better get to deleting all of your comments there if you're going to hide that fact.

And you're cute little "what did you expect us to find" bullshit line is exactly what the media has been saying since the backpedaling started. Way to show that you're not just a Lemming.

I was always impressed with that promise that 1/3 of the world's population would be dead from AIDS or HIV by the year 1990. None of the circumstances changed by then, either. There was still no cure for either, there has still never been proof that AIDS exists, and the same people who have been dying from the same problems for centuries were obtaining the problems.

You should believe everything your scientist tells you, without question, verification, critique, or scientific method or thought.

Evidence for man-made global warming hits 'gold standard': scientists
https://www.reuters.com/article/us-climatechange-temperatures/evidence
-for-man-made-global-warming-hits-gold-standard-scientists-idUSKCN1QE1ZU?utm_source=reddit.com

“Humanity cannot afford to ignore such clear signals,” the U.S.-led team wrote in the journal Nature Climate Change of satellite measurements of rising temperatures over the past 40 years.

They said confidence that human activities were raising the heat at the Earth’s surface had reached a “five-sigma” level, a statistical gauge meaning there is only a one-in-a-million chance that the signal would appear if there was no warming.

Such a “gold standard” was applied in 2012, for instance, to confirm the discovery of the Higgs boson subatomic particle, a basic building block of the universe.

Benjamin Santer, lead author of Monday’s study at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory in California, said he hoped the findings would win over skeptics and spur action.

The Joss Whedon script for Serenity, where Wash lives, is Serenity-190pages.pdf at https://www.mediafire.com/two

New findings reported February 25, 2019 in the journal Nature Geoscience make the case that the effects of cloud loss are dramatic enough to explain ancient warming episodes like the Paleocene-Eocene Thermal Maximum — and to precipitate future disaster.

Climate physicists at the California Institute of Technology performed a state-of-the-art simulation of stratocumulus clouds, the low-lying, blankety kind that have by far the largest cooling effect on the planet. The simulation revealed a tipping point: a level of warming at which stratocumulus clouds break up altogether. The disappearance occurs when the concentration of CO2 in the simulated atmosphere reaches 1,200 parts per million — a level that fossil fuel burning could push us past in about a century, under “business-as-usual” emissions scenarios. (Global average atmospheric carbon dioxide in 2017 was 405.0 parts per million (ppm for short), with a range of uncertainty of plus or minus 0.1 ppm.)

In the simulation, when the tipping point is breached, Earth’s temperature soars 8 degrees Celsius, in addition to the 4 degrees of warming or more caused by the CO2 directly.

Once clouds go away, the simulated climate “goes over a cliff,” said Kerry Emanuel, a climate scientist at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. A leading authority on atmospheric physics, Emanuel called the new findings “very plausible,” though, as he noted, scientists must now make an effort to independently replicate the work.

To imagine 12 degrees of warming, think of crocodiles swimming in the Arctic and of the scorched, mostly lifeless equatorial regions during the Paleocene-Eocene Thermal Maximum.

The theoretical basis for global warming was published in the late 1800's. But for the sake of argument, the first instance where global warming might be considered to have been brought to public attention was in 1998. Since then we've had Bill Clinton, GW Bush, and Obama each serve 2 terms as president, and the US hasn't made a dent in its outsized per capita contribution in all that time.

This is a US problem, not a party problem.

It might not have been mentioned much in the mainstream news sources, but at least in my experience it had been talked about earlier than that.

I grew up in the Chicago suburb public school system. We had a publication in grade school called The Weekly Reader that gave us information about things that were happening in the world. I have vivid memories of stories published in there that were about global warming, and more specifically the holes in the Ozone layer that we had been causing.

I also remember in one of the articles, scientists saying that if the average global temperature went down one degree that it would cause an ice age, but if it went up one single degree that all of the ice caps would melt. I don't know how true that actually is, but I remember that it scared the crap out of me when I read it.

These articles would have predated 1998 by quite a bit. I was already out of High School at that point. I'd say I was reading about this stuff in class as early as 1986 or so.

.......

Shame... I can't seem to find anything on Google in the way of an archive of old weekly readers. If anybody could find them, please post the links.
