I don't think the game is played the way you think. Let’s have a thought experiment like Einstein might do. Trump and Vice President Mike Pence go hunting. Vice President Dick Cheney went hunting, once, so let’s assume that Pence is no more careful with a shotgun than Cheney and shoots Trump in the face. Bam! Bam! with both barrels. Pence is instantly promoted to President without an impeachment. What changes for the Democrats if they are rid of Trump so easily? Nothing, really. Maybe even gets worse because Pence is more pleasant & electable and far less stupid than Trump.

I'm thinking the Democrats need a plan that sinks the entire GOP, not just Trump. Best way is to make Trump the anchor chain that wraps around the GOP and pulls the entire party to bottom where they can all drown together.

Right now Trump says one thing and the democrats say the report says otherwise. That falls right into Trump and the republicans hands. The dems need to stop telling the American people to read a report that is very technical, and almost 5 hundred pages long. Instead they need to show the movie.

They need to show the people the movie based on the report. That means calling witnesses and letting the people watch the Mueller report play out on TV. As of now, Trump only has to spin what is written in a report no one is reading; easy. It will be next to impossible for Trump and the republicans to spin what goes down that the people see with their own eyes.

At that point, even if the republicans don't convict in the senate the people will still know Trump is guilty. That the democrats were justified in attempting to bring him to justice. Then come the elections with all republicans coming off as aiding in his coverup. Of being guilty of obstruction themselves.

It is also important to start getting Trump to say he is not a criminal. This can be done by the dems calling all the investigations criminal investigations. Trump always having to say he is not a criminal would be a great visual on the nightly news.

You are right. Voters need to see it on TV because they won't read, for example, In Terrifying Interview, William Barr Goes Full MAGA
http://nymag.com/intelligencer/2019/05/william-barr-interview-cbs-muel
ler-coup-trump.html

Barr grossly contradicts Mueller’s findings with regard to Trump’s ties to Russia. “Mueller has spent two and half years, and the fact is, there is no evidence of a conspiracy,” he says. “So it was bogus, this whole idea that the Trump was in cahoots with the Russians is bogus.”

This is just a wild lie. Mueller was unable to establish a criminal conspiracy between Trump and Russia. He was unable to establish this, in part, because “some individuals invoked their Fifth Amendment right,” or “provided information that was false or incomplete,” or “deleted relevant communications.” Indeed, the two Trump campaign officials most closely linked to Russian cutouts, Paul Manafort and Roger Stone, refused to cooperate with prosecutors. A failure to establish a criminal conspiracy is not the same thing as finding “no evidence of a conspiracy.” Nowhere does the Mueller report say there’s no evidence of a conspiracy. Some of the potential conspiracy elements were unprovable — Mueller never figured out why Manafort gave 75 pages of polling data to a Russian agent.

Barr, amazingly, goes even farther to say the report proved “this whole idea that the Trump was in cahoots with the Russians is bogus.” In fact, the Mueller report notes that it did not even try to establish whether the campaign was “in cahoots” with Russia. The report states that it “applied the framework of conspiracy law, not the concept of ‘collusion.’”

The report in fact finds extensive evidence that Trump was in cahoots with Russia. His top campaign officials took a meeting with a Russian agent promising them help from the Russian government. Trump asked Russia on camera to hack his opponent’s emails, and they carried out a hacking attempt that day. Trump was pursuing a lucrative, no-risk business deal requiring Russian government approval during the campaign and lying about it, making him vulnerable to blackmail by Russia. Sharing an explosive secret that could destroy your campaign in order to potentially collect a massive payoff from a party that you know is doing illegal things to help you is the definition of being in cahoots.

Yep, all you say and much much more will be exposed if live hearings are held. The news will also show selected pieces that will help expose Trump and the republicans as corrupt. Every time Trump tweets live testimony will immediately follow in the news showing he is lying.

Joe Biden kicked up a fuss the other day by saying something...un-smart. He suggested that Trump is a historical one-off and that, once we are rid of him and have fumigated the White House thoroughly, the normal routine of governing the country will resume and everybody can have drinks with each other at the end of the day. If there is one issue that desperately needs litigating in the Democratic Party's primary process it is this:

Resolved: this presidency is the logical outcome of 40 years of modern conservatism and its effect on the Republican Party. If it wasn't this guy, it would've been somebody else.

The party is the problem, because of what it's become—a vehicle for bigotry, religious fanaticism, rigged elections, retrograde social policies, renegade plutocracy, staggering wealth inequality, scientific ignorance, reflexive stupidity, violent populism, white supremacy, and a view of the American electorate that is all switch and no bait. (Did I miss anything?) Three times since 1981, the Republicans have produced a president who basically embodied all of these things, just to varying degrees. Ronald Reagan played fast and loose with the truth; is that business about trees causing air pollution really any nuttier than whatever it was that Trump tweeted at 5 a.m. this morning? George W. Bush launched a war on false pretenses and made this a nation that tortures people and is proud of it. Is that any better than what's going on at the border now? The question isn't how the Republicans produced this particular disaster of a president. The question is what took them so long.

The only possible way to change the Republican Party is to force it to answer for itself, over and over again. One of the biggest mistakes ever made in American politics was the Democratic Party's blunder in letting the Republican Party off the hook for the various catastrophes wrought by the administration of C-Plus Augustus. Iraq, Katrina, and the Economic Collapse should have been hung around Republican necks in the same way, and for the same reasons, that Democratic politicians had to talk for 20 years about the mannequin the Republicans made out of George McGovern, whom Bobby Kennedy once called the most decent man in the Senate.

If a Democrat is elected in 2020, that person should use all the powers of the office to demonstrate once and for all that the prion disease afflicting the Republicans now has reached terminal stage and that the GOP is a mad dog, snapping at phantoms in midair, and endangering the public health and welfare. Mitch McConnell should be made an object of anger and ridicule, and that work should come from the top.

In Republican Video, Former Federal Officials Sound The Alarm On Trump Obstruction
The behavior of this president “ought to concern anyone that cares about the honest workings of government,” warns a Reagan administration official.
https://www.huffpost.com/entry/gop-trump-obstruction-of-justice-video_

Jeffrey Harris, deputy associate attorney general in the Reagan administration, pointed to the damning findings against Trump in special counsel Robert Mueller’s report on his investigation of Russian interference in the 2016 election. Harris said that, as a former federal lawman, “I didn’t think it was even a close prosecutorial call as to whether the president obstructed justice.”

The Mueller report “revealed a picture of the president and his presidency in a way which ought to concern anyone that cares about the honest workings of government,” he added. “If the rule of law stands for nothing, then we have anarchy. It’s as simple as that.”

Paul Rosenzweig, deputy assistant secretary of homeland security under President George W. Bush, called “obstruction of justice and perjury ... far more important than most normal crimes” because they “go to the absolute core of how the rule of law functions in this society.”

Donald Ayer, who served as George H.W. Bush’s deputy attorney general, said what particularly disturbed him was the silence of Republicans on Capitol Hill who know that “there is a damning case in the Mueller report of obstruction of justice by the president.”

The group plans to hand-deliver a copy of the video, as well as Robert Mueller’s report with key sections highlighted, to each Republican lawmaker on Monday."

Sadly, the Republicans today laugh at the rule of law. They don't care what's good for the country, only themselves.

Justin Amash’s town hall revealed the cure for right-wing lunacy: right-wing common sense
https://www.latimes.com/opinion/op-ed/la-oe-heffernan-impeachment-is-a
s-important-to-voters-as-economy-20190601-story.html

In a confrontation with Amash, Luke ended up stealing the show.

When Luke got her hands on the question mic, groans greeted her headgear. A big man stood and shouted. Nevertheless, she persisted.

“If you want to go along with the violating the public trust, how far does that go?” she asked Amash. Her syntax was faulty but her point was clear: What about accountability for “the Democrats, who have done the same thing”? Then came the telltale earworms that mark American minds lost to reason: “deep state,” Hillary Clinton’s “silent coup.”

Amash demonstrated the one way out of bewilderment: Ignore propaganda, inform yourself and speak up.

“Silent coup” is a favorite phrase of Mark Levin, a gonzo conspiracy theorist on Fox News. That wacko meme is further traceable to Russian propaganda from 2016 and a 1991 book, “Silent Coup,” that argued that President Nixon’s downfall was set up by Democrats trying to hide — you guessed it — a Democratic National Committee prostitution ring.

It was sorely tempting to tune out Luke while she waxed a tinfoil hat at the town hall. But she was worth listening to. In her halting way she eventually managed not just to get a point across, but to embody that point. In short, she was baffled. She was hoping right-wing folklore would get her out of her bafflement. But it only made her more baffled.

Luke put her confusion on display in the room, which took a measure of courage. For her to pick up political earworms right off the pop charts suggested a certain cognitive vulnerability.

This vulnerability is definitely not confined to town hall audience members. A prominent case is Atty. Gen. William Barr, who echoes Fox News and Russian botnets when he alludes to “spying” by the Obama administration and Uranium One, a farrago that makes as much sense as leprechaun stories.

As Robert S. Mueller III reminded us Wednesday, American democracy can be infected by scary ideas configured to rile us up. Some people fall so hard for crazy lies, according to former Trumpist troll David Weissman, they enlist in hostile foreign troll armies, repeating and spreading nutcase memes even when it costs them social ties, professional standing and their own sanity.

But others recover or resist. And at Amash’s town hall, Luke’s common sense, the best inoculation against propaganda, seemed to rally. In her telling, the deep state came down to “the bureaucrats.”

Suddenly, she was out of Fox News talking points and into her own lived experience.

“I don’t know if you’ve ever dealt with a bureaucrat, but it’s just mind-boggling that we have to deal with them,” she said. “I have a lot of experience.”

Bureaucrats. No kidding. Paperwork and red tape are the day-to-day manifestations of the frayed systems — in healthcare, banking, education, housing, the IRS — that bedevil us all. Think: rejected claims from insurance companies, brief enrollment windows, out-of-network charges, unintelligible “terms and conditions.” For any American without a coterie of personal lawyers and accountants, life routinely involves demoralizing roadblocks. Mind-boggling is right.

Amash didn’t address bureaucracy, which is too bad; it’s a kitchen-table issue. But he did model a brisk, energetic, focused way of sorting signal from noise with one’s full mental capacities. For an infuriated nation that often seems close to moral and intellectual disintegration, Amash’s commitment to keeping his mind unboggled is right on.

Luke had accused Amash of turning into a Democrat, in spite of the fact that his voting record is reactionary and straight-up Freedom Caucus. But, even if his votes reflect the worst of libertarianism, Amash at his town hall was an advertisement for thinking for yourself. He had studied the Mueller report and concluded the president had committed impeachable offenses. He was immune to being spoon-fed lies from outlets like Fox News.

Just as Luke had demonstrated bewilderment, Amash demonstrated the one way out of bewilderment: Ignore propaganda, inform yourself and speak up. This should be considered the square-one duty of citizenship. The fact that so many Republicans have shirked that duty is … mind-boggling.

Did you ever hear of Shakespeare's play Julius Caesar? In all of Congress there is not one Brutus to stab Trump's Caesar to death. You know why: the Secret Service protects Trump from assassination, which makes this an impractical way to get rid of an incompetent President. Likewise, in all of Congress there aren't 50 people to impeach Trump. You know why: the 53 GOP Senators protect Trump from conviction during an impeachment trial, which makes this method also impractical to get rid of an incompetent President.

Mueller’s moves doom impeachment in Senate. Even Republican critics of Trump said any effort to remove the president was off the table.

You should click on this link: https://animalclock.org/

It is the 2019 U.S. Animal Kill Clock. America kills 32,189,000 cows per year. America kills 121,317,000 pigs per year. Nine billion chickens, too! If you think there is a huge divide between a cow and a pig and a Donald Trump, you'd not be seeing they are all large mammals that don't quite measure up to full-human sentience. And then there is the fact that Trump is a big chicken who faked his way out of the Vietnam War. Nine billion chickens slaughtered per year!

6ixStringJack, 4 sitting Presidents have been assassinated while in office, 4 more died "naturally" in office, 2 shot but didn't die, and there has only been 45 Presidents. What is the big deal in your head about there being one less Donald Trump in world? It might not be a tragedy like Julius Caesar playing at Shakespeare's Globe Theater, but Trump's death certainly would make for an emotionally stirring TV special before V.P. Mike Pence is sworn in as President.

One person out of nearly 7 billion is a drop in the bucket, this is true. No tears would be shed by me, cause like I said before, he ain't my Daddy.

I'm just wondering how many times you want to add to the trail of breadcrumbs leading back to your IP address your desire to see one human being in particular meet his maker prematurely either by your own blade or the blade of somebody else.

Maybe you think that this forum is obscure enough that nobody would notice, or maybe you use a VPN and believe the advertisement hype that you're safe from ever being discovered while you type away your death wishes and death threats from atop your ivory tower.

I can assure you that neither is the case.

Do me a favor...

Type the following line between the brackets (not including the brackets themselves, but include the quotation marks) into Google's search bar and tell me what pops up.

[site:fireflyfans.net "The Watergate scandal indicted 69 people, "]

I can also assure you, that this little trick works for any single line of dialogue that you've ever posted here. Even if you were to go back and delete your posts, there's a lot that have been quoted by others after you've posted them.

And all I'm saying is that something were to happen even remotely along any of the lines and scenarios your dark, unfiltered mind decides to defecate on these forums, well... let's just say I hope you have some very powerful friends on your side if that day ever comes to pass.

Just a friendly little tip to somebody who doesn't know how the internet works... :)

Pleasant dreams.

6ixStringJack, I sometimes think you don't remember Firefly. Mal often treated people like they were animals to be slaughtered. The same happens in America. The U.S. Animal Kill Clock is at 23,002,889,000 this morning. https://animalclock.org/

Entire nations are treating Trump like he is an angry, stupid animal (a pig, a cow, a chicken, but mostly a chicken from Kim of N Korea's viewpoint). Countries can't trust his word or negotiate with him, they can only wait him out until he is dead or gone: “One of Trump’s major failings is that he only has a hammer,” said Andrea Schneider, a professor of law at Marquette University who focuses on negotiations and has studied Trump’s tactics. “He has no capacity of looking at the long term and recognizing that the vast majority of our interactions in life are repeat interactions. I joke with my students that if you treat negotiations as a one-shot deal, it will be. No one will ever want to deal with you again.”

“What’s so striking with him is his willingness to pick multiple fights without thinking through the consequences,” said Eliot Cohen.

With his trade wars, Trump administration officials have said the president feels emboldened by the strength of the U.S. economy and believes he can outlast his rivals in a showdown that could harm both economies. But some analysts said that the president could be dangerously miscalculating his position given the uncertainty of his own political prospects.

“I know that Trump considers the 2020 campaign as a triumphant march to the inevitable [reelection], but that’s not the way the rest of the world is looking at it,” said Christopher R. Hill, who served as a U.S. ambassador under the four presidents who preceded Trump. “You’re already seeing the Chinese holding back and saying, ‘We’ll see what will happen over the next 18 months to see if he’s still around and then maybe we’ll do something.’ To some extent, Trump does not have the self-awareness to understand that people are looking at the window closing on him.”

The outlines of a potential civilian prosecution of a former president Trump are already emerging. While there are reports of tax dodges, illegal campaign contributions, and improper foreign contributions to his inaugural committee — among other things — investigations into those claims are ongoing. There is, however, an overwhelming case that the president engaged in obstruction of justice — his effort to stop the special counsel’s office from probing his campaign’s ties to Russia.

In the second volume of his 448-page report, Mueller sets forth evidence of obstruction of justice that any competent federal prosecutor could use to draft an indictment. And Mueller made it clear himself that his detailed report was intended, in part, to “preserve the evidence” because “a President does not have immunity after he leaves office.”

In the eyes of a seasoned former federal prosecutor looking only at the evidence we have so far, here are the likely routes — and what Trump has to worry about next.

Speaker Nancy Pelosi told senior Democrats that she’d like to see President Donald Trump “in prison”. Instead of impeachment, Pelosi still prefers to see Trump defeated at the ballot box and then prosecuted for his alleged crimes, according to the sources.

4 Disturbing Details You May Have Missed in the Mueller Report

Some troubling-to-outright-damning episodes have been lost in the noise around its release.

After two years of silence, the special counsel Robert Mueller recently made his first public remarks — to complain, it seemed, that no one had read his report. “We chose those words carefully,” Mr. Mueller said, “and the work speaks for itself.”

But at a dense 440-plus pages, if the report speaks for itself, it takes a great deal of time and focus to listen to what it has to say. Mr. Mueller tells a complicated story of “multiple, systematic” efforts at Russian election interference from which the Trump campaign was eager to benefit. And he describes a president eager to shut down an investigation into his own abusive conduct. This is far from, as the president put it, “no collusion, no obstruction.”

The document is packed with even more details, ranging from the troubling to the outright damning. Yet these have been lost in the flurry of discussion around the report’s release.

Even the most attentive reader could have trouble keeping track of the report’s loose ends and dropped subplots. Here are four of the most surprising details that you might have missed — and none of them are favorable to the president.

1) Coordinating with WikiLeaks? (Volume I, pp. 52-54)

How much did Mr. Trump personally know about Russian efforts to assist his campaign, and when did he know it? A great deal.

2) Looking for Clinton’s “missing” emails (Volume I, pp. 49, 62-63)

If the term “Collusion” means working behind the scenes with Russian actors to obtain hacked information damaging to Mrs. Clinton, then this section of the report describes just that — collusion that took place at Mr. Trump’s request.

3) Sharing polling data (Volume I, pp. 130-131, 140)

While managing the campaign, Mr. Manafort told Mr. Gates to share “internal polling data” private to the campaign with Mr. Kilimnik, so he could share it with Ukrainian oligarchs and a Russian oligarch. Mr. Gates sent Mr. Kilimnik the data regularly, deleting the WhatsApp messages after he did so. In an in-person meeting with Mr. Kilimnik, Mr. Manafort shared more information about the campaign’s election plans and polling, including information about “battleground states” that would be key to Mr. Trump’s election.

Mr Gates goes on trial in November. Mr. Manafort is in jail.

4) Obstructing justice (Volume II, pp. 90-93)

Attorney General Bill Barr’s view that the president did not obstruct justice is informed by his argument that presidential conduct authorized by the Constitution cannot constitute obstruction. But this does not address conduct that took place outside the scope of the Constitution.

One of many examples outside the scope of the Constitution: “Substantial evidence,” Mr. Mueller writes, “indicates that the president’s effort to have Sessions limit the scope of the special counsel’s investigation to future election interference was intended to prevent further investigative scrutiny of the president’s and his campaign’s previous conduct.”

At this point in time, Trump's guilt and Barr's complicity are the proverbial low hanging fruit. Bushels of low hanging fruit. Low enough even Nadler can safely reach them. But there are the Dems, standing 50 feet away, starving, considering their options. "I dunno... let's wait until they get even lower, like on the ground..." Feckless Dems will get what they deserve - Trump in 2020 and more voters turning their backs, disappointed in their lack of simple courage. They may not run into GOP voters, they may just not vote. And that's a vote for Trump and the GOP.

At least two "damning details" in the Mueller report have been discovered to have been deceptively edited

1) A phone call from Trumps lawyer (Dowd) to Flynn's lawyer was edited to appear as if Dowd was requesting sensitive information or seeking to obstruct justice, but does not match the actual transcript.

2) A person represented as a "Russian" intel source with links to the Kremlin was actually a UKRAINIAN informant with multiple contacts per day to our embassy in Ukraine, providing reliable information about the UKRAINIAN government to our State Department.

Mueller chose those words carefully indeed! When the report is dug thru in its essentials, it will turn into dust and blow away because there was nothing there to begin with - just rumor, innuendo, and careful editing.

"Rumor, innuendo, and careful editing" is an election strategy. That is also how prosecutors sway juries in criminal trials, not with logic, because your average juror is not a professor of philosophy. It is constitutionally complicated to indict a sitting President, but the calculation would be different if Trump were not President. And, as it happens, there is an election next year, which could lead, fairly quickly, to his exit from the White House. In other words, the way to hold Trump to account criminally is to first hold him to account electorally. Then use the same tactics ("rumor, innuendo, and careful editing") to convince a jury to vote for his conviction.

You DO realize what you've just posted, right? That you don't care if there is any evidence, or indeed even any crime; you want Trump convicted on something as baseless as "rumor, innuendo, and careful editing".

That's pretty un-American. I thought that many of our Constitutional protections had to do with preventing star chamber proceedings, kanagroo courts, and lynchings.

But of course you DON'T recognize what you post. Your hatred (not of Trump, but of yourself) has driven you mad.

When will the Mueller Witch Hunt Fishing Expedition be over?

Maybe Mueller can resign, or something.

Somewhere, you recently posted that you looked at the history of second's posting, back to about 2013, when he changed his login name. That was when he changed his name from "two" to "second" on this site.

Oh. Now I getcha.

No. I wasn't aware that he had posted under a different name before.

I didn't look through the history of his posts either, although I did share the link for the entire history of his posts right after he shared the link for the entire history of my posts.

In this thread though, I was just illustrating how you could put in a few key words using an advanced google search function and the name of this website to bring up entire previous posts by somebody, and it's pretty easy to find all of Second's death threats in that manner.

You could also use "two" or "second" to further narrow down the results if you desired, but those are "two" words that aren't likely to help all that much. Actually, not a bad choice of handle names. I have to give him credit for that.

Do Right, Be Right. :)

Let me answer myself since SECOND doesn't seem to be clued in to reality - That thing called the Mueller investigation? Yup, still over.

Trump welcomes foreign interference in 2020 campaign

Shockingly – if anything shocks anymore – President Donald Trump told ABC news Wednesday that he need not tell the FBI if the Russians once again reached out with an offer of “dirt” on his opponents in the race for president. When Trump was told that Christopher Wray, the FBI director the president himself appointed, said last month that this kind of attempted foreign election interference was something that should be reported to federal law enforcement, Trump’s response was: “That’s wrong!”

The inevitable Phase 2 of ForeignDirtgate took place this morning:

Under fire for saying earlier in the week that “I’d take it” and scoffing at the notion that he should call authorities, Mr. Trump shifted by saying that while he would still look at incriminating information provided by a hostile foreign power about an election opponent he would “absolutely” report such an encounter. “Of course, you give it to the F.B.I. or report it to the attorney general or somebody like that,” Mr. Trump said on “Fox & Friends” in a telephone interview on Friday morning. “But of course you do that. You couldn’t have that happen with our country.”

If this follows the usual pattern, Phase 3 will happen in about a week. That’s the part where Trump, counting on the fact that memories have gotten a little foggy, claims that he’s always said he’d call the FBI if some foreigner offered him campaign dirt. His spear carriers in Congress and the media will all join in, agreeing that the liberal media, as usual, is deliberately impugning Trump’s integrity by misquoting him.

Hillary took dirt about Trump from a foreigner, and he got it from another foreigner (Russian, he says, but probably Ukrainian).

Obama accepted dirt from a foreigner and turned it into an investigation.

So, WWHD? (What Would Hillary do?) WWOD?

*****

So now we get to see SECONDRATE spend the next fifteen posts confabulating more than Trump about something that never happened.

And oh BTW ... that investigation? It's still over.

Judge Napolitano: Trump is prepared to commit a felony to get re-elected

Reacting to President Trump saying he would accept foreign intel on a political opponent if offered, and that he doesn’t feel it’s necessary to contact the FBI, Fox News senior judicial analyst Judge Andrew Napolitano on Thursday said he worries the president is “prepared to commit a felony.”

Napolitano was asked by Fox News anchor Shep Smith if there was any “gray area” or “wiggle room” when it comes to campaigns legally receiving “dirt from a foreign entity on a political opponent.”

“There’s no wiggle room with respect to dirt,” the judge responded. “With respect to opposition research. The Federal Election Commission decided in other cases that that is a thing of value.”

This prompted Smith to wonder if what the president described he was willing to do during his interview with ABC News constituted a felony.

“Correct,” Napolitano confidently declared. “Meaning he would be committing a felony and the person giving it to him, if the person was here, would be committing a felony as well.”

WTF was the Steele Dossier?

Oh... that's right.

Ignorance of the law being no excuse only applies to proles.

But Hillary and the DNC had no idea that Fusion GPS subcontracted the work out to Steele's firm, and Steele had no idea that the research he was doing was for Hillary.

That's rather convenient for all parties involved.

Do Right, Be Right. :)

6ix, Republicans are claiming Hillary Clinton’s campaign did something similar by commissioning a firm that hired a former British spy, Christopher Steele. It is not similar. The Republicans are wrong because the huge difference is that Steele got paid hundreds of thousands of dollars. Oh, and the Democrats didn’t lie about it, like Trump did about the Russians’ help/work/hack/steal on his campaign. Russia did it for free, too!

“I would not have thought I needed to say this,” Federal Election Commission head Ellen Weintraub tweeted regarding a statement she’d issued outlining why it’s illegal for US political candidates to accept contributions from foreign governments.

“Let me make something 100% clear to the American public and anyone running for public office: It is illegal for any person to solicit, accept, or receive anything of value from a foreign national in connection with a U.S. election.”

“This is not a novel concept,” she wrote. “Election intervention from foreign governments has been considered unacceptable since the founding of our nation.”

“It is illegal for any person to solicit, accept, or receive anything of value from a foreign national in connection with a U.S. election.”

And when it comes to foreign influence, the law is clear: As Weintraub wrote, it is “illegal for any person to solicit, accept, or receive anything of value from a foreign national in connection with a U.S. election.”

In most cases, what this means is pretty obvious: Foreign nationals can’t donate money to a presidential campaign. It’s also illegal for candidates themselves to solicit or receive monetary contributions from foreign nationals.

But while a “thing of value” is easy to define when it comes to money, or even services or in-kind contributions, it’s a lot more complicated when it comes to something like opposition research, or so-called campaign dirt.

“Campaign-relevant information from a foreign national definitely can be an illegal in-kind contribution, but it gets trickier when the information does not have obvious cash value and isn’t necessarily something that a campaign regularly needs to buy,” wrote Michael Kang, a law professor at Northwestern University. “The policy concern is that any valuable advice or tip from a foreign national could, at least in theory, become an illegal in-kind contribution.”
