In the middle of a press briefing on Sunday, Dr. Anthony Fauci, the director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases and the government’s top infectious disease expert, tried to answer a question about whether an anti-malaria drug, hydroxychloroquine, could be an effective treatment for Covid-19. Trump has continuously touted the drug in public despite the fact that there is no conclusive proof of its usefulness and plenty of evidence of its harmful side effects. His heedless quackery threatens to kill thousands.

The last thing Trump wanted was for Fauci to tell the truth while standing next to him in front of the press, so Trump blocked him from answering the question and attacked reporters for asking about it. “You don’t have to ask the question again,” Trump told a reporter, while complaining that Fauci had already talked about the anti-malarial drug “15 times.”

Fauci has tried hard over the last few weeks to avoid directly contradicting Trump, particularly in official press briefings. He has instead used alternative media interviews — including a popular online chat with NBA star Stephen Curry — to try to get the truth out.

Yet the fact that Fauci must stand by and let Trump spout dangerous misinformation shows how Trump’s purges have intimidated the remaining professionals inside the government.

We live in an era of no conclusive proof justifying any of the actions.

I have far less problem with Trump trying to calm a public who is borderline full panic mode with hope that there is existing treatment for another illness that can help here.

How is that dangerous?

Don't bring up the "Trump Supporter" who got sick and her husband that died because they drank fish tank cleaner. That's fake news. She's got FEC reciepts up her ass donating to Hillary Clinton and the DNC, and she was charged with domestic abuse toward her husband which, less face it, must have been something pretty fucking terrible in America for a woman to actually get that charge.

She murdered her husband, than drank just enough of it to get sick herself. Then she claimed she was a Trump supporter and the shill Lefty media ran with that story without bothering or even caring to check if any of what she was saying was true.

Don't drink bleach, don't eat Tide Pods, don't medicate yourself with fish shit cleaner.

lol

What that article says but doesn't make any attempt to emphasize for its low IQ audience is that the program was still in effect, hence the 6 month extension signed on April 1st.

They were up and running when this all went down. They did a hell of a job, huh?

Trump administration shuttered pandemic monitoring program, then scrambled to extend it

As early indications of China's coronavirus outbreak emerged in late December, the Trump administration notified Congress it would still follow through with its plan to shutter a US Agency for International Development surveillance program tasked with detecting new, potentially dangerous infectious diseases and helping foreign labs stop emerging pandemic threats around the world.

The administration ultimately backtracked nearly three months later,

But by that time, the coronavirus outbreak had already been declared as a global pandemic by the World Health Organization and had claimed the lives of more than 4,300 people in the US.

The PREDICT program's cancellation and the subsequent scramble to secure an emergency extension reflects the Trump administration's broader pattern of dismantling or downsizing key offices and programs focused on protecting the US from a pandemic, despite multiple warnings in recent years about the need to prepare for such an event.

Opportunists are everywhere, all the time. As unscrupulous as somebody trying to repackage fish tank cleaners might be, they're only successful if idiots on the other end of that are buying it.

In the last 24 hours, I've gotten two really good scam emails. One where a very polite gentleman informed me that while visiting a website reporting on The Coomph that my computer was hacked with malware and offering the suggestion that what he would do in my position is to send $1,900 in bitcoin to his web address so he can fix the issue for me. Another where a pastor who runs one of the largest global charitable organizations picked my email address among tons of others so they can donate money to us directly.

The first one doesn't even make sense to send in an email. Those kinds of threats are generally tied directly to a virus that is installed onto your computer when you download games or other programs from a shady website, and most people who don't know anything about computers end up with a computer that won't do anything they want it to do until they fix it, so they would feel more compelled to take it seriously.

The second one was nearly a word for word script of a scam email that dates back to at least 2012, only slightly modified to put references to The Coomph in it.

There will be people who fall for both of these.

Any dummy who swallows fish cleaner because it happens to have the same name as a malaria drug the President mentioned in a press conference deserves what they get just as much as people who drink bleach because of their medical properties and teenagers who eat Tide Pods to get internet clout.

You're just looking for something else to blame Trump on when the media largely isn't focusing on that right now. Especially at a time where despite the extreme Lefty shill media outlets putting out their worst polling numbers ever Trump still has 45% approval on the aggregate. That number would be higher if a reputable place like Gallup put out more polling too and they were included in the aggregate.

What do you suppose happens to that number once the Stimulus Checks finally go out and unemployment issues are ironed out and that back pay gets cut as well?

You've got millions of Americans out of work right now that haven't gotten money in 3 to 5 weeks and he's still at 45%.

No, it does NOT fit. Every Trump voter I know is cynical about politicians, even without knowing what exactly they have been lied to about. I'm cynical about Trump because I can read a list of 546 times Trump has lied his head off. Some of those lies I heard in real time. I didn't need the list because I knew the facts that Trump was lying about. His covid-19 lies are not on the list because if 546 examples aren't enough, the 547th example won't convince you that Trump is a crook and a con-man and a world champion liar.

How on earth would anybody be able to say that he's a "World Champion Liar" if he gets caught all of the time and he's on record for lying at least 546 times just about one single topic?

Sounds to me like he sucks at lying. A world champion liar gets away with it.

And really, to the point, why should anybody believe the Lies that the Legacy Media is saying about the guy either unless they already don't like him and want their confirmation bias jerked off?

If you hadn't been attacking Trump every single day for over 3 years over stupid and silly stuff, somebody might take your gripes today seriously.

That being said, you didn't. You or the Legacy Media isn't going to change a single mind. Everybody already knows who they're voting for in November.

As a political philosophy, Trumpism is an anti-establishment blend of economic populism, reactionary nationalism, and strong militarism summed up in Trump’s campaign slogan, “Make America Great Again.” Due to bigoted statements Trump had made and the viewpoints of some of his base, Trumpism is sometimes associated with white supremacy.

Trump PR Stunt Falls Flat, as White House Video Exposes His Failure to Prepare for Pandemic

What, exactly, were Americans supposed to take away from his gauzy video tribute to himself? “Right now nearly 20 million people are unemployed. Tens of thousands of Americans are dead. How is this sizzle reel or this rant supposed to make people feel confident in an unprecedented crisis?”

Trump had no response but to shift back to praising himself for restricting travel from China in January. “But what did you do with the time that you bought?” Reid asked. The month of February… the video has a 6-week gap.

He doesn't listen to me.

And besides, I'm actually against him on the issue that he makes the decision.

It IS a state's issue.

My governor Eric Holcomb said two weeks ago that HE decides when Indiana opens back up again, not Donald Trump. And he's right. Cuomo is an idiot and way behind the curve on that one, although he gets all the press for it because he's a New York Democrat.

Constitutionally speaking, this is a states issue.

The difference between you and I is that I know this and won't change my mind on it. If Obama were in office right now and republican governors were saying they were going to re-open their state for work, you'd be saying that it was Obama's decision.

Don't even bother lying and saying that you wouldn't.

Trump will be giving four more briefings this week. If he wanted to tell the nation to end social distancing, nobody could stop his mouth, certainly not state governors. What Trump says would make a difference, but he doesn't want the responsibility that comes with giving clear and concise instructions.

Yesterday's 2.5 hour long "briefing" was NOT brief. Trump sure loves to talk.

Would you like your disabled brother to be one of the number who die from covid-19?

You've never felt the cold hand of the Reaper on your shoulder. I have and yes what happened to me was out of my control, I still know how lucky I am to be here today.

I don't want to see millions die over something we can control and eventually get a vaccine for.

We and I mean humanity is suppose to be smarter than this but we really don't learn from our own history even when it comes to disease. Which is just as important as learning to control our war like behavior. Humans are social beings which is why something like a virus or any bacteria can spread so fast. It's made all the worse today because we hope on a plane in one part of the world and get off in a few hours in another, not thinking about what we (an individual) is doing.

Don't let Trump read the following. He might decide social distancing was a complete hoax to make him look bad. If you think he has been acting crazy/stupid before, once he reads this he will turn his volume knob of crazy/stupid to 11:

Earlier today I mentioned a few anomalies about the COVID-19 death tolls. I could have added some others too. This plus a few other things has put a thought in my head that’s been rolling around for several days—a thought that I’m afraid to state publicly even though my opinion obviously has no effect on anything.

But here it is: I’ve started to wonder if you can account for the anomalies with two assumptions: (1) the initial models were just plain too high, for reasons we don’t yet understand, and (2) the value of social distancing has been overestimated. A strong social distancing regimen reduces death rates by around a third or a half, not 5x or 10x.

This is why the United States is doing fairly well even though our response was lousy and late. It’s why South Korea did well with no countermeasures at all except for testing and tracing. It’s why Sweden is doing only a bit worse than other Nordic countries and about the same as the rest of Europe even with very light countermeasures. It’s why nearly every Western country is on a surprisingly similar trendline. It’s why grocery workers are dying at only a moderately higher rate than the general population. It’s why red states that have resisted lockdowns haven’t suffered much for it. It’s why New York is doing so much worse than the Pacific coast states even though it lagged by only a few days in ordering lockdowns. A few days simply can’t account for a 20x difference. It has to be something else. Maybe just bad luck.

Now, this is just a dilettante guess. There are obviously plenty of other possibilities. And it’s worth acknowledging that it’s hard to compare different countries because they all have different age distributions; different health profiles; different weather; different health systems; etc. etc. I also realize that no one wants to say anything that downplays the effect of countermeasures because it might provide people with a reason to demand an end to social distancing before we’ve truly stamped out the virus. There are some who might even consider it irresponsible to so much as broach the subject. Still, I wonder.

The daily death toll has been declining for several days now, so even a rolling average shows a net drop in daily deaths. The trendline is once again pointing toward tomorrow as the likely peak. That means somewhere in the ballpark of 50-60,000 deaths through summer. ... the undercounting probably hasn’t changed much over time ...

But it has.
===> March 21, 2020 LACounty eliminates testing on most potential COVID-19 patients.
===> March 21, 2020 NYC eliminates testing on most potential COVID-19 patients.

NYC is THE single largest driver of COVID-19 statistics in the US. And if confirmed cases are undercounted, so too are confirmed deaths.
Quote:

A strong social distancing regimen reduces death rates by around a third or a half, not 5x or 10x.
I'd be curious to see where he gets his figure from, and if it holds true even in cases where a virus has superspreaders.
Quote:

This is why the United States is doing fairly well even though our response was lousy and late.
Well, no. The US is in the top 10 deaths per 1M people, and Sweden is above the US. http://91-divoc.com/pages/covid-visualization/
Quote:

It’s why South Korea did well with no countermeasures at all except for testing and tracing.
And this is flat-out wrong. SK has MANDATORY (police-enforced) quarantine of anyone testing positive, a special-precautions travel policy for people entering the country, and official advisories for the public to stay indoors, avoid public events, wear masks and practice good hygiene, as well as a large-scale PR campaign that puts people under broad social pressure (a powerful force in SK) to conform.
Quote:

It’s why Sweden is doing only a bit worse than other Nordic countries ...
And this is wrong in its claim "Sweden is doing only a bit worse than other Nordic countries" - Sweden has twice as many deaths per 1M as Denmark, the next-worse Nordic country.
Quote:

... and about the same as the rest of Europe even with very light countermeasures.
And this is completely unsupported in its cause-effect claim. It's more likely due to the facts that 1) Sweden has a highly dispersed population as opposed to European countries with highly concentrated populations, and 2) that about half the Swedish workforce normally works from home.
Quote:

It’s why nearly every Western country is on a surprisingly similar trendline.
Only if you think that 350 deaths per 1M (Belgium) is the same as 40 deaths per 1M (Germany).
Quote:

It’s why grocery workers are dying at only a moderately higher rate than the general population.
Where? A lot of important differentiation can be washed out by taking too grand an average. There may be fewer grocery workers in NYC - dying at far higher rates than anywhere else.

But that certainly won't show up in a national average.
Quote:

It’s why red states that have resisted lockdowns haven’t suffered much for it. It’s why New York is doing so much worse than the Pacific coast states even though it lagged by only a few days in ordering lockdowns. A few days simply can’t account for a 20x difference.
Yanno, maybe its simple numbers of people in concentration. If a small town has rampant COVID-19 spread, only a few hundred people will be affected. If a large city - like, oh, I don't now, let's say New York - has rampant COVID-19 spread, 8.4M people will be affected.
Quote:

Now, this is just a dilettante guess.
No, it's outright misrepresentation of facts.
Quote:

Still, I wonder.
No, you've got an agenda.

Millions aren't going to die from this. They never were.

Trump obviously in the service of the super-rich. 6ix, if you weren't living in a hut and dreaming Trump would save you from your foolishness, you'd see it. To me it is obvious, but I'm in the class served by Trump. So where is Trump taking the US? We’re on the Brink of Cyberpunk. It’s not just the technology, surveillance, and dystopian vibes—it’s the culmination of decades of deliberate governmental erosion.

Where is the president in Blade Runner?

Beneath the 1982 neo-noir’s trappings of genetically engineered human automatons is a story about corporate power over and indifference to life, alienation in the face of wealthy indifference to the plight of workers. Replace the Tyrell Corporation with Amazon and reframe the replicants as “essential services,” and suddenly you have a world of workers terrified that their jobs are inherently a death sentence—moving straight from fiction to reality.

But while Blade Runner’s once-distant future of November 2019 feels resonant in so many ways—vast corporate power, persistent surveillance, life in a time of constant crisis—it misses the actual 2019’s most salient feature: an inescapable, painful awareness of politics and of the presence or deliberate absence of government in daily life.

Government, as experienced for much of the 20th century, is largely absent from the lives of characters in cyberpunk stories. Police are a durable feature, but government services and functions beyond the security state are absent.

Yet for all the aggressive visibility of politics in our daily lives, we’re not that far off from the powerlessness of a cyberpunk future. Cyberpunk speaks to the present because the conditions that inspired cyberpunk remain largely unchanged.

As the COVID-19 pandemic sweeps through the world, it collides with governments in the West that have spent decades deliberately shedding power, capability, and responsibility, reducing themselves to little more than vestigial organs that coordinate public-private partnerships of civic responsibility. This hollowing of the state began in earnest in the 1980s, and the science fiction of that time—the earliest texts of cyberpunk—imagines what happens when that process is complete. Cyberpunk is a genre of vast corporate power and acute personal deprivation. The technologies at the center of it are all means of control, control bought by the wealthy or broken by criminals. Where recourse is available, in whatever small way, it’s through direct action.

In William Gibson’s Neuromancer, characters interact with the government either through past military service or in the law literally made manifest in code. Real power is reserved for entrenched wealth. For Bruce Sterling’s Islands in the Net, politics is visible but is driven by corporations either bending states to their will or actively routing around governance. These dystopias are the logical culmination of a political project designed to fundamentally limit what government can do for people and expand what it can do for the wealthy.

Back in the 1980s, before movies and video games reduced the genre to a mass of unimaginative violence and body modification tropes, cyberpunk was the literary movement that was busy projecting our fears about rampant capitalism, media oversaturation, and emerging computer networks into fictional futures.

I don't live in a hut. It's a 3 bedroom 2 bathroom house that's going to triple my money when I'm done with it if there's still an economy when the joint effort from both Republicans and Democrats possibly destroyed it.

They're ALL in service of the super rich. And, BTW, part of the stimulus bill that was a near unanimous vote was a big fat pay raise for themselves.

I worked in direct mail and graphic design. This will add an hour at most to the process. I assume the longest delay in the process would be to have Trump take a look at it and say whether or not his signature is big enough. Otherwise it'd only be 10 minutes.

Texas Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick’s suggestion last month that he and other senior citizens would be willing to risk exposure to the coronavirus to get the economy back on its feet sparked headlines — and outrage — around the globe.

But the details of just how Patrick wants to jump start commerce in Texas, and who all is advising him on it, remains a state secret — with one notable exception, that is.

Patrick announced last week that G. Brint Ryan, a multimillionaire Dallas businessman and Donald Trump ally, would lead his “Task Force To Re-Start the Economy.”

Who else is on it? What’s the focus? Why all the secrecy?

Patrick’s office didn’t respond to numerous requests for more detail about his task force.

In the meantime, government watchdogs say Ryan, a Republican megadonor whose company specializes in reducing tax bills and getting economic development grants for big corporations, could benefit from his elevation to the head of Patrick’s quietly assembled task force.

Ryan denies that and insists his goal is to stabilize and revive the economy, particularly for small businesses.

The tension about who stands to gain from government recovery efforts mirrors a debate in Washington, where the lack of oversight and transparency of coronavirus-related spending is leading to concerns that the money could end up helping people that don’t need it.

“A major question here is whether Brint Ryan would be serving in this capacity in the interest of all Texans or if he is going to be serving in this capacity as sort of the Dan Patrick-sanctioned chief lobbyist for Ryan LLC,” said Dave Levinthal, editor at large at the Center for Public Integrity, a nonprofit research group that tracks the influence of money in politics.

Ryan certainly knows the tax code and how to wrangle billions of dollars out of government coffers for corporations. He’s been dubbed the “corporate welfare king” of Texas.

Savvy and politically wired: records show Ryan and his company’s political action committee together have given Patrick at least $775,000 since 2011, and over the years he has essentially power-sprayed money into campaigns benefiting major statewide Republicans.

Ryan Hired lawmakers

But he doesn’t just use campaign money to build relationships with elected officials. Ryan also puts them directly on the company payroll — even while they file bills Ryan LLC wants passed.

Case in point: in 2009 a Ryan lobbyist bragged the company was “heavily involved” in the passage of a package of property tax relief measures co-authored by then-state Rep. John Otto, R-Dayton. Otto’s other job: director of business development at Ryan. The company worked with Otto “to fine-tune” one bill and “drafted major provisions” of another before lobbying to pass the legislation, according to Ryan LLC’s own post-session analysis.

Otto told the Houston Chronicle the initiatives came from hearings he held all over the state — not from his private employer.

Ryan’s hiring of state Rep. Drew Springer of Muenster in 2017 as a “director” raised eyebrows at the Capitol since the North Texas Republican served on a key tax panel and voted in favor of several of the tax bills the company was pushing at the Capitol — including at least one Springer authored.

Springer said he’s no longer a Ryan LLC employee but he saw no conflict between his elected service and his day job, adding, “I never had anybody once come up and tell me that this would have been a beneficial Ryan bill to go vote on.”

Dallas area U.S Rep. Lance Gooden, R-Terrell, also was on the Ryan payroll for a time during his stint in the Texas Legislature, as was former state Rep. Harvey Hilderbran, R-Kerrville.

A member of the University of North Texas Board of Regents, Ryan has served as an informal tax adviser during President Donald Trump’s 2016 run, and his company sponsored the speaker series that paid for Donald Trump Jr.’s controversial 2017 speech at UNT, which came with a $100,000 fee.

Ryan said he doesn’t use his legislator-employees to advance his agenda at the Texas Capitol, or ask or encourage them to file company-backed bills.

Three reasons the US is not ready for the next pandemic
https://theconversation.com/three-reasons-the-us-is-not-ready-for-the-
next-pandemic-100799

For three Texas A&M University pandemic scholars, the COVID-19 pandemic and the country’s ill-prepared response wasn’t a surprise. In fact, they predicted it and warned U.S. officials years ago.

Christine Blackburn, Andrew Natsios and Gerald Parker wrote an article in 2018, emphasizing the country’s need to prepare and to unite fronts with other countries and organizations to fight off a looming pandemic.

“It is not a matter of if, but when, the next disease will sweep through the world with deadly and costly consequences,” they wrote.

The article, “Three reasons the U.S. is not ready for the next pandemic,” was published in The Conversation, an online academic journal. It outlined the country’s gaps and risks in preparation for a pandemic, called for a strong, centralized leadership for international cooperation in health, and for U.S. officials to tackle the country’s vulnerable manufacturing chain of medical supplies.

The article noted that although global supply chains are beneficial in the way they offer cost effective, fast and efficient delivery of equipment and supplies, relying on these deliveries in other countries could leave chains vulnerable and “deprive people of needed medical supplies” in the case of an emergency or epidemic. The article even mentioned a potential shortage of N95 medical grade masks if an epidemic were to hit Asia, where most of the United States’ masks are produced.

“This interconnectedness of the global economy and the expansiveness of medical supply chains means that a disruption anywhere along the line could spell disaster worldwide,” the article authors wrote.

A&M researchers also urged U.S. officials to “address the threat of pandemics in cooperation with all other nations and with multilateral institutions such as the World Health Organization, the U.N. Security Council, UNICEF and more.” And it proposed the creation of a position within the White House that would have quick “decision-making authority” and prioritize pandemics as a threat to national security.

“When you’re talking about pandemic, it’s a collective good. We’re always in this together. Diseases don’t respect borders. … In order to address that, we need to address it as a global community,” said Blackburn, lead author of the article and deputy director of Texas A&M’s pandemic and biosecurity policy program.

With an onset of the novel coroanvirus, many of the issues or predictions presented in the A&M researchers’ article have become a reality.

Countries around the world, including the United States, are responding to a shortage of medical-grade masks — an issue that researchers suggested could have been prevented with the creation of policies to diversify production and transportation of supplies and a better understanding of critical supply chains and points of possible breakdown.

Suggested collaboration with health institutions, including the World Health Organization, is also in jeopardy.

President Donald Trump announced this week that he was instructing his administration to halt funding for the WHO, an agency responsible for international public health, pending a review of its role “in severely mismanaging and covering up the spread of the coronavirus.” The United States is WHO’s largest single donor, contributing between $400 million and $500 million annually to the Geneva-based agency in recent years.

WHO officials said they alerted the world about the virus in the early weeks of January.

Trump’s latest move has garnered criticism from global leaders and health officials, including Dr. Michael Osterholm, director of the Center for Infectious Disease Research and Policy, and Trump’s recent comments on the virus have often been at odds with state officials and officials at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Blackburn said it will take several years to move production of masks to a point where the United States is less dependent on other countries like China for production. Agricultural sectors and its workers, as well as the food supply chain, which Blackburn has been analyzing the past several weeks, will likely be impacted, resulting in lower supply or higher price points for certain foods.

“I think we really need to understand that this is a long-term thing that we’re going to be dealing with,” she said. “A vaccine is quite a way off and there’s some hurdles that we need to overcome to create a vaccine and make sure that its stays effective.”

Life as we know it has changed, she said. Now is the time to start planning and asking ourselves: “How do we move forward in the absence of something like a vaccine?”

Blackburn and her colleague Parker, the deputy director of A&M’s pandemic and biosecurity policy program, will appear on Texas A&M University System’s TV show “COVID-19: The Texas A&M System Responds” Thursday to further discuss the COVID-19 pandemic.

@JYSexton

I hate to tell you, but as somebody from rural America, there are going to be so many uncounted deaths during this pandemic.

Poor Americans are taught not to get medical care, are riddled with preexisting conditions, and local journalism has been absolutely destroyed.

The pandemic is seeping into rural America right now and it's going to devastate communities, most of them through service jobs and retirement homes, and the media isn't going to notice or cover any of it as the narrative turns toward this thing being over.

These communities are just now being touched by the pandemic and many of them have been told by Fox News and the president that it's a political hoax.

The consequences are going to be horrific, and the media is simply not going to notice or tell their stories.
If you have trouble believing this, just take a look at what the meth and opioid epidemics were like. Rural communities can be RAVAGED without anyone with a television show even taking notice.

America is going to "reopen" while these communities burn.

And because Wal-Mart hollowed these communities out, there's only one place for everyone to go, for everyone to transmit.

The hospitals are outdated and unprepared. And most of the people don't have health insurance or trust experts anyway.
It's...going to get bad.

In my family most people shrug when talking about death. “Reopening” America sounds good to them because generations of exploitation has worn them down. They’re ready to die to punch the time clock.
The numbers are going to be massive but mostly unregistered.

What the people really want is a personal check from Trump's bank account with his picture printed in full color and the words "Vote Trump". The envelope for the check should also have his picture and the words "Better than Biden. Vote Trump." That is not using Federal funds to reelect Trump, but if you disagree then take it to the Supreme Court. I'm sure they will rule in a 5 to 4 vote that it is perfectly Constitutional.

... called for a strong, centralized leadership
I'd rather leave policy and reponse to the states, because each state is going to be affected differently. Some places, like NYC, are going to get slammed early. Others may get hit later, or less. If you force everyone into lockstep, they're going to be over- or under- reacting.

And then there is the fiasco of the CDC. The doctor who detected the first community case in the Seattle area had used a flu surveillance program but re-purposed it for SARS Cov-2, DESPITE the fact that the CDC had denied her request to go ahead many times, and even AFTER she found the first case ... a case that would have never been found if the CDC had its way ... they told her to stop testing.

And then, there was the CDC's insistence that everyone use their test kit, despite the fact that there many labs ready to test by other means, and the test kits were greatly delayed. The CDC's extremely narrow criteria for applying tests also hampered response.

The CDC's insistence that people not wear masks of any kind. Seriously??

The problem with centralized control is that it is inflexible, and it can insist on uniform, but wrong, policy, everywhere.

In the beginning stages of a epidemic, people need to be able to jump on it even if nobody knows exactly what's going on, and that doesn't mean waiting while a ginormous bureaucracy gets its feet moving.

I see the role of the CDC as more of an information clearing-house and advisor, like I see the Federal government as controlling the borders and interstate travel. For example, a providing centralized information on who had what equipment where, and maintaining and readying MANUFACTURING CAPACITY for critical items. If the CDC had allowed other labs to do different tests, they could have followed that up LATER with a comparison between the "official" test and the unofficial ones to allow uniform data interpretation. Instead, the CDC (and the FDA) were giant boondoggles. The author seems to think that centralizing control will make things better; instead, it just creates a field for bigger mistakes.

international cooperation in health
Like? Sharing information? That's up to each nation. Sharing equipment? Not likely when everyone is scrambling for the same resources.

, and for U.S. officials to tackle the country’s vulnerable manufacturing chain of medical supplies.
I have been harping on this FOR YEARS, and been called a "Russian troll" for my trouble.

It's not just "medical supplies" because "pandemics" aren't the only kind of emergency, and ANY disruption in someone else's centralized production or fragile supply lines ... whether by war or natural disaster (elsewhere) leaves the USA vulnerable.

We live in a seriously depleted, fragile economy. We made it that way because "centralized" means economies of scale and greater "efficiency" and "offshore" means greater profits but is also less robust and not beneficial for, or protective of, Americans. The answer isn't more centralization, it's less.

And part of that answer is Make America great again. By hook or by crook, we need to divorce our economy from China and stop depending on them to be our manufacturing center.

Trump said he could solve the problem of Chinese goods with tariffs. He said tariffs would be paid by the Chinese, NOT by American consumers. That was a lie. If Americans won't pay, manufacturing and jobs won't be moving back to the USA. Since Americans don't wanna pay, it ain't gonna happen.

If you want N95 masks by the billions per month made in the USA then Americans have to pay to make that happen. Since they did not pay, it did not happen.

SECOND, first of all, stop paying attention to what Trump says. What Trump says, or does, has little bearing on what needs to be done.

And, I mean NEEDS. Not what we would "like" to be done, or Gee wouldn't it be nice if it was done but NEEDS to be done.

Manufacturing again in America can only happen with a lot of investment. Either Congress needs to take the bull by the horns and fund that investment directly, or create a Federal bank (yanno, like in the Constitution) to make Federal loans. Under situations of war, the President may use the Defense Production Act.

Trump, by hook or by crook, has been divorcing our economy from China's. I give him credit for that.

I will never know if Trump knew he was lying when he said he could bring factory jobs to America from China by taxing Chinese goods without those tariffs being paid by Americans. But whatever he knew, he gave up on moving manufacturing jobs once American voters complained about the cost. Americans will complain about the cost of N95 masks made in America as soon as the cost becomes known for making billions of masks per month. What will politicians do then? Give up on Made in America or else they will not be reelected. Signym, no good will happen when voters won't pay.

What a bunch of nonsense Kevin babbles !!!

The CDC revised its definition of "case" to include probable as well as confirmed COVID-19. "Changes in United States Data following the new CDC guidelines on "Case" and "Death" definition".

EVERYBODY changed their numbers - even Iowa - not just NY.

SECOND - prices wouldn't have to go up at all if companies were willing to make something less than 2000% or more profit.

SIGNYM

I believe in solving problems, not sharing them.

I DON'T CARE WHAT TRUMP SAYS. He hosted a reality TV-show, remember? He says whatever he thinks he needs to say to get what he wants done, DONE.

I'm more interested in what HE DOES.

Jeezus, SECONDRATE, are you a dupe of reality TV shows?? You seem to take everything said seriously. ALL Presidents lie. Saint Obama lied, and he lied more consequentially than Trump.

People lie to me constantly, Signym. I can tolerate lies. My problem is not with lying, but with people who don't make sense. Trump doesn't make sense. Obama did. Trump is criminally incompetent. Obama wasn't. Trump is disorganized, fat, lazy and loquacious. Obama wasn't.
