Goodbye, kind world (George Monbiot) - In common with all those generations which have contemplated catastrophe, we appear to be incapable of understanding what confronts us.

Quote:

You judge people for being "stupid" with their pets.

You've obviously never owned a dog before. I love dogs. Cats make shitty pets for lazy people.

No, I judge people for being stupid with ANIMALS. Yanno, being sprayed by wild animals with urine, feces, spit, and blood, all day, every day, in wet markets. And then going home. Because it makes money. Like that.

Do YOU get down-and-dirty will dog poop, Jack? Get sprayed in the face by dog piss yet?

Breth volume iz a likely factor, but how much airborne virus duz it take?
Suppoze the virus mutates so it can liv indefinitely in the air. You coud catch it from a wisp uv breth from a sparrow a mile away.

Jo, currently what's making the virus more infectious are 2 things: it has added different molecular 'grappling hooks' on its surface by which to attach to human cells; and because each virus does a better job infecting more cells, more people develop more serious infections with more shed virus per person.

Every organism and virus has an infectivity threshold which is how much you need to be exposed to before you become sick. So, obviously different people will fight off the infection differently, and some people's immune systems will do a better job than others. But it's a good estimate that reveals big differences between infectious agents. For example, it takes roughly 6 bacteria of E Coli O157H7 to cause an infection. It takes roughly a 1000 virus particles to be infected by Hepatitis B. It takes roughly a million virus particles to be infected by HIV. While at this point nobody has figured out (yet) how many SARS-CoV-2 virus particles does it take to become sick, there's good evidence with SARS-CoV-2 the dose makes the disease. People exposed to few virus particles become only mildly symptomatic, if they develop symptoms at all. While people exposed to higher numbers of virus particles become sicker.

As for it becoming environmentally resistant ... all viruses degrade over time in the environment. For example, Hanta virus Sin Nombre strain (excreted in deer mice urine and feces, 50% mortality rate, it's the strain found in the US) degrades to non-infectivity in about 3 days under the typical environmental conditions found in homes.

SARS-CoV-2 is a non-encapsulated virus, which means it doesn't have a nice protective lipid (fat) layer around it to keep it from drying out. That's why it's so susceptible to even mild disinfectants, like 60% alcohol ... I digress ... anyway, there are very specific conditions where SARS-CoV-2 can 'survive' longer - though at ever decreasing numbers over time - outside the body. And they are very cool to cold temperatures 32F-40F, 100% relative humidity, and landing on a non-porous non-reactive surface. That keeps them moist and in the same configuration as when they left the body. But since infectiousness depends on 'grappling hook' spike proteins having a particular configuration, and heat, lack of moisture, and interaction with surfaces all will change that configuration (the same way egg white proteins cook in a pan), unprotected, non-encapsulated SARS-CoV-2 is quickly rendered non-infectious over time in all but the most protective conditions.

So, while mentally one can extrapolate infectivity ALMOST infinitely (unless you believe in homeopathy, one needs at least 1 viable virus particle to cause an infection, which is the final endpoint of any infectivity argument), in the real world there are limits to how far virus infectivity can go, based on viral degradation in the environment, and its basic infectivity.

I don't know if I can make this more clear, but I'll try by analogy. If I can only jump 6", I might be able to train myself to jump 1'. And if I theoretically extrapolate that trend, I might extrapolate I'll be able to train myself to jump to the moon. So, obviously, there are real limits to theoretical extrapolation.

Uh, the dark lung looks more like a lung from a coal miner, city dweller, or smoker, contaminated by ultra-fine carbon (coal/ soot) deposits --- what used to be called "black lung" when it happened in coal miners.

And in reddit, that pix comes under the title "Cancerous Lungs (left) compared to Healthy Lungs (right)"

This pix from science news shows a post-COVID-19 lung removed from a person who had a double lung transplant.

Republican Rep. Ron Wright of Texas has died, his congressional office announced in a statement Monday, saying that he had been admitted to the hospital after contracting Covid-19.

"Congressman Ron Wright passed away peacefully at the age of 67 on Feb. 7, 2021. His wife Susan was by his side and he is now in the presence of their Lord and Savior," the statement read. "For the previous two weeks, Ron and Susan had been admitted to Baylor Hospital in Dallas after contracting COVID-19."

His congressional office announced that he had tested positive for Covid-19 on January 21 with the congressman saying at the time in a statement, "I am experiencing minor symptoms, but overall, I feel okay and will continue working for the people of the 6th District from home this week."

Man... it's a great thing that we've privatized everyone's health records... I mean, we never really did that and they're hardly private at all, but when the media needs them to remain private we can pretend that a 67 year old congressman who contracted Covid-19 didn't already suffer from a myriad of ailments and we can blame his death squarely on a virus that kills nearly no one.

Another Trumptard bites the dust between being elected to Congress and being sworn in:

Louisiana Congressman-elect Luke Letlow dies from COVID-19

https://apnews.com/article/louisiana-coronavirus-pandemic-shreveport-b
d0de82f39d856ef262f81fd66dec1d8

Photos posted on social media from campaign events show Letlow sometimes wearing a mask when interacting with potential voters, but other times — including at his victory party, two weeks before his hospitalization — without a face covering as he posed for pictures with supporters.

Hailing from the small town of Start in Richland Parish, Letlow was elected in a December runoff election for the sprawling 5th District U.S. House seat representing central and northeastern regions of the state, including the cities of Monroe and Alexandria. He would have been sworn in next week.

Letlow was going to fill the seat being vacated by his boss, Republican Ralph Abraham. He had been Abraham’s chief of staff and ran with Abraham’s backing for the job.

It doesn't matter what "side" he was on.

Useful death is useful.

P.S. Please stop talking about Trump using the death penalty out of one side of your face while making fun of somebody for protecting innocent babies.

I'm a firm believer the death penalty shouldn't be used. We don't like you pro-abortionists muddying the message, mkay?

The married Trumptards I know are opposed to abortion, but then have their girlfriends get abortions. There are also female Trumptards, from a story I got from my sister in January, that get abortions then cry about it afterwards. I think their opposition is strictly in order to own the Libtards as hypocrites opposing execution of prisoners but not opposing murdering babies or whatever the formulation Trumptards are using to own the Libtards.

republican X-tians (the party of X-tian love, forgiveness, and charity)
anti aid to children
pro war
pro gun
pro death penalty
anti abortion

liberal democrats (the party of peace, freedom, 'the little guy', and inclusiveness)

anti death penalty
pro aid to immigrants (but not as much to citizens)
anti free speech

Your way of looking at hypocrisy is not useful. There is such a thing as ideology score. If your way was correct, in order for a politician to NOT be a hypocrite, all the Democrats would be clustered at one point while all Republicans would be at another, but that is not what the analysis shows:

I know you think that every single doctor, medical examiner, and pathologist is a scammer and willing to lose their license by saying something is COVID-19 when it's not. But believe it or not, Jack, not only CAN they tell the difference between death from - say COVID-19 and obesity, or COVID-19 and myocardial infarction, or COVID-19 and a broken leg - but they actually document it on the death certificates.

Thanks for the info, 1kiki. Clarifying and potentially useful.

I had an idea about a multi staje Chamber UV Doom. It woud start with infrared LEDz to heat and dry the virus befor zapping them with UV.

Just an uninvestigated notion at this point, but I havent run across anything about infrared being useful for sterilization.

Worth looking into?

The hospitals are incentivized financially to put Covid-19 on the death certificate, and their OWNED doctors are ordered to put Covid-19 on there if they just happened to be infected while in the hospital and actually dying of something else.

They've got deniability. The person actually did have Covid when they died of something else. And if they didn't have it before they went in for a long and possible final hospital stay, they got it while they were at the hospital.

My point regarding the "good" GOP Congressman's passing is that Second himself was just pulling this exact same shit yesterday. Presenting his death as a Covid death, yet dude was battling Cancer and Second either didn't know this or conveniently failed to mention it.

HOSPITALS DON'T WRITE DEATH CERTIFICATES, JACK!!!

MDs, DOs, and other treating prescribing professionals do, along with MEs, coroners, and pathologists.

There are roughly 850,000 active MDs alone in the US. That figure doesn't count osteopaths and other treating/ prescribing professionals who can also write death certificates.
https://www.statista.com/topics/1244/physicians/

60% of MDs alone do NOT work for hospitals. That figure doesn't count osteopaths and other treating/ prescribing professionals who can also write death certificates.
https://www.healthcaredive.com/news/hospitals-now-employ-more-than-40-

/

And that number doesn't include MEs, coroners, and pathologists (who don't work for hospitals) who write or certify cause of death.

That's a LOT of people putting their professional licenses on the line to 'fake' COVID-19 for no reason at all, Jack!

And btw, a COVID-19 death is distinct from a cancer death (if it wasn't, the cancer lung' photo would look the same as the COVID-19 lung photo), just like COVID-19 is distinct from a broken leg, or high blood pressure.

The doctors are all owned by the insurance companies.

Just because somebody went to college and wears a white lab coat doesn't mean they're not owned while clocked in like somebody working at WalMart wearing a red apron.

What they're not going to risk is losing their medical license and having to trade in that white lab coat for a red apron at WalMart because they wouldn't call Covid the cause of death when it was clear the person was dying of stage 4 pancreatic cancer but also just happen to contract Covid during their hospital stay.

There is currently HUGE federal money pouring in per covid death.

Look at the headline of the article I posted about the Texas Congressman Second was calling a Covid death and forgetting to mention the fact he had cancer.

Even on a right leaning news site, they put Covid first in the headline. It should have read bouts of Cancer FIRST, and Covid second, or been worded in a way where he had a long battle with cancer and finally died after he had contracted Covid.

Dude died of Cancer. Not Covid.

Don't care about one dood, dood. Not every COVID-19 death is fake or due to something else.

Medical professionals and examiners actually CAN tell the difference between a broken leg death and a COVID-19 death.

Hospitals don't write death certificates. And the VAST majority are written by people NOT paid by ANY hospital, including the completely independent coroners etc. Insurance companies don't care what's on a death certificate, they get paid according to DRGs.

Lancet Study Finds 40 Percent of U.S. COVID-19 Deaths Could Have Been Avoided

The British medical journal the Lancet, on Wednesday, published a damning assessment of Donald Trump’s presidency and its impact on Americans’ health, concluding that 40 percent of the nearly 500,000 COVID-19 deaths in the U.S. over the past year were avoidable. The journal came to the conclusion by comparing the U.S. health outcomes on the coronavirus—the country leads the world in COVID deaths and confirmed cases with more than 27 million—with the weighted average of other G-7 nations. So it’s not a wildly abstract conclusion to draw: the U.S. could have saved hundreds of thousands of lives if it had just performed similarly to its economic peers.

The report assailed Trump for his response to the pandemic, but emphasized that the disastrous response to the virus's spread was the result of years of destructive public policy decisions on health that extended well beyond the Trump years. From the Lancet:

Many of the cases and deaths were avoidable. Instead of galvanizing the U.S. populace to fight the pandemic, President Trump publicly dismissed its threat (despite privately acknowledging it), discouraged action as infection spread, and eschewed international cooperation. His refusal to develop a national strategy worsened shortages of personal protective equipment and diagnostic tests. President Trump politicized mask-wearing and school reopenings and convened indoor events attended by thousands, where masks were discouraged and physical distancing was impossible.

The result, the Lancet notes, is more than 450,000 deaths where “about 40 percent of which could have been averted had the U.S. death rate mirrored the weighted average of the other G7 nations.” But the trajectory of the U.S. falling behind G-7 nations in life expectancy is nothing new, and the gap has grown over the past decade even before the coronavirus exacerbated existing deficiencies in the U.S. health system. The number of excess deaths in the U.S. when compared to similar countries in the G-7 already stood at more than 450,000 in 2018 alone—a number that has been climbing for decades. Most of those unnecessary deaths in the U.S. are in people under the age 65, such that, “if U.S. death rates were equivalent to those of other G7 nations, two of five deaths before age 65 years would have been averted,” the Lancet notes. “To put this number in context, the number of missing Americans each year is more than the total number of COVID-19 deaths in the USA in all of 2020.”

Well, never is a long time to foretell.

Anyway, given what we're doing now, I agree that no, it's not going to go away globally. And even if we got rid of it here, as long as it exists elsewhere on the planet, new variants will evolve, and those new variants may be - or may not be - susceptible to antibodies developed from previous infections or vaccinations. So until the planet as a whole gets its act together and makes vaccination a major shared project, we all will be in the spin-the-wheel SARS-CoV-2 game.

That said, eradication in humans isn't impossible. But it'll take focus, coordination, and money. So IMO the question is do we want to reach that goal enough to get it done.

And the potential animal reservoirs - cats, wild cats, and mink, just don't have sufficient exposure to humans to be more than a rare outbreak, if that.

Also, fwiw, I take endemic rabies as a good indicator of what's possible in wild animal vaccination if even just a small amount of money is spent. Any of us who's had a dog or cat is familiar with the rabies injection vaccination. But scientists have actually developed an ORAL rabies vaccine against different rabies strains. (Rabies strains evolve within species, because generally, a smaller rabid animal that bites a larger animal will be killed, while a larger rabid animal that bites a smaller animal will kill it. Either way, transmission is severely limited between different-sized animals. So 'bat' rabies, and 'skunk' rabies, and 'raccoon' rabies etc develop.) More than that, scientists have figured out how to stabilize the oral rabies vaccine, and how to select the proper bait that will attract the species to be vaccinated. For raccoons, for example, anything that smells like the worst rotten fish ever is very tempting. They then broadcast that vaccine-containing bait by airplane over the area of concern. That's how raccoon rabies originating in Florida and transported to Georgia (a hunter wanted to improve the local 'coon hunting) was stopped at Ohio where it had spread in less than 2 years. And that's how Mexican coyote rabies was stopped in its northward spread through Texas.

To me, the question isn't 'can we do it' - can we really eradicate SARS-CoV-2 from the planet, the question is 'how much do we want it'.

PS - a stable nasal spray/ eye drop/ oral rinse-and-swallow vaccine with a wide variety of proteins - not just spike proteins - all in different configurations would be highly preferential. The reason why current vaccines only target serious disease, and deaths, is because injections stimulate deep-body immune responses. They don't target infection and transmission, which happen in the mucous membranes. If you create a vaccine that stimulates the mucous membrane immune system, you stop the initial infection and the subsequent transmission.

Goodbye, kind world (George Monbiot) - In common with all those generations which have contemplated catastrophe, we appear to be incapable of understanding what confronts us.

As I've mentioned before, COVID-19 is going to be a global problem - with new variants developing and circulating globally in a very un-fun game of whack-a-mole - until the countries around the world get their act together and decide to eradicate it globally in a coordinated way.

Anyway, while the western world has held itself hostage to corporations and their vaccine prices and lack of manufacturing capacity, and in competition with each other for a supply; Russia took an entirely different path. Very early on, Russia announced its intent to develop a vaccine and sell it cheaply around the world. To that end, it developed Sputnik V with the "government-backed Gamaleya Research Institute of Epidemiology and Microbiology". (wiki) And it's now selling its low cost vaccine around the globe including to many countries in the western hemisphere.

Quote:

ne-latin-america-intl/index.html

Eduardo Valdes, a former diplomat and member of government coalition Frente de Todos, who now serves as chair of the Foreign Affairs Committee in Argentina's Chamber of Deputies, says there's a clear line between vaccine negotiations and external factors (in obtaining Sputnik V for Argentina). "Now is not the time to do ideology. Our goal is for the Western Hemisphere to get its vaccines and not to poke into someone else's (Russia's) internal affairs," he told CNN.

It sounds like Argentina has decided to focus on "What is in Argentina's interests? What is in Argentinians' interests?"
Quote:

Six countries across the region -- Argentina, Bolivia, Mexico, Nicaragua, Paraguay, and Venezuela -- have now authorized use of the Sputnik V vaccine. Others are considering authorization requests, ever more urgent given the global shortage of available vaccines.
In addition, Brazil and Cuba have obtained licenses to manufacture Sputnik V.

Russia did well. It did well by the global epidemiology and helping to stamp out COVID-19 globally, it did well by its people by vaccinating them in mass vaccination campaigns before it made them available globally, and it did well politically around the world by creating a legitimate global vaccine supply, especially for poorer countries.

If only American politicians were as adroit in looking after America's and Americans' interests, and not so religious in their slavery to corporations.

U.S. Life Expectancy Falls by a Full Year

New data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Thursday showed that life expectancy in the U.S. dropped by a full year in first half of 2020, yet another reminder of the devastating toll Covid-19 has exacted. The one-year drop in the average number of years an American, at birth, can expect to live to 77.8 years (down from 78.8 years in 2019) is the largest decline since World War II. That data from the National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS), which is part of the CDC, only accounts for the first six months of 2020, which means the decline in life expectancy, a measurement of the nation’s health as a whole, will likely plummet even further, as the pandemic turned more deadly as the year wore on.

During the summer of 2020 the pandemic dies down in Europe but keeps shooting up in the US. By November we're doing worse than all but four or five European countries.

Why? Because Donald Trump insisted on reopening the economy too soon. Unlike Europe, we never crushed the virus to near zero. Instead we kept on killing people all through summer, and when winter came we were starting from a higher base. I think it's safe to say that this one mistake probably cost a hundred thousand lives or so.

This is why I rate our overall response to the pandemic as "pretty good." We really didn't make as many deadly mistakes as people think, and overall the CDC and FDA did a fairly reasonable job. The one big mistake we did make came down to a single sociopathic man whose motivations, as always, were beyond human ken. Electing Trump president was our only real mistake, and we did that long before anyone had ever heard of COVID-19.

NUTSHELL VERSION: We mostly responded fairly well to the pandemic, especially given how new it was and how the science behind it was changing rapidly in real time. On the vaccination front, our response has been all but miraculous.

We made only one big mistake: allowing Donald Trump to be our president. My take is that this is not enough to condemn the entire US response. It's only one thing. On the other hand, it was a big thing and we did elect the man. If you think it's sophistry to say "it was only one thing" when the result was so catastrophic, I can't really blame you. I think it's important to understand just where we went wrong, but I'm less concerned with how you then describe it.

Wall Street Journal

We’ll Have Herd Immunity by April

https://archive.vn/92pKH

Quote:

Amid the dire Covid warnings, one crucial fact has been largely ignored: Cases are down 77% over the past six weeks. If a medication slashed cases by 77%, we’d call it a miracle pill. Why is the number of cases plummeting much faster than experts predicted?

In large part because natural immunity from prior infection is far more common than can be measured by testing. Testing has been capturing only from 10% to 25% of infections, depending on when during the pandemic someone got the virus. Applying a time-weighted case capture average of 1 in 6.5 to the cumulative 28 million confirmed cases would mean about 55% of Americans have natural immunity.

Now add people getting vaccinated. As of this week, 15% of Americans have received the vaccine, and the figure is rising fast. Former Food and Drug Commissioner Scott Gottlieb estimates 250 million doses will have been delivered to some 150 million people by the end of March.

There is reason to think the country is racing toward an extremely low level of infection. As more people have been infected, most of whom have mild or no symptoms, there are fewer Americans left to be infected. At the current trajectory, I expect Covid will be mostly gone by April, allowing Americans to resume normal life.

Antibody studies almost certainly underestimate natural immunity. Antibody testing doesn’t capture antigen-specific T-cells, which develop “memory” once they are activated by the virus. Survivors of the 1918 Spanish flu were found in 2008—90 years later—to have memory cells still able to produce neutralizing antibodies.

Researchers at Sweden’s Karolinska Institute found that the percentage of people mounting a T-cell response after mild or asymptomatic Covid-19 infection consistently exceeded the percentage with detectable antibodies. T-cell immunity was even present in people who were exposed to infected family members but never developed symptoms. A group of U.K. scientists in September pointed out that the medical community may be under-appreciating the prevalence of immunity from activated T-cells.

Covid-19 deaths in the U.S. would also suggest much broader immunity than recognized. About 1 in 600 Americans has died of Covid-19, which translates to a population fatality rate of about 0.15%. The Covid-19 infection fatality rate is about 0.23%. These numbers indicate that roughly two-thirds of the U.S. population has had the infection.

In my own conversations with medical experts, I have noticed that they too often dismiss natural immunity, arguing that we don’t have data. The data certainly doesn’t fit the classic randomized-controlled-trial model of the old-guard medical establishment. There’s no control group. But the observational data is compelling.

I have argued for months that we could save more American lives if those with prior Covid-19 infection forgo vaccines until all vulnerable seniors get their first dose. Several studies demonstrate that natural immunity should protect those who had Covid-19 until more vaccines are available. Half my friends in the medical community told me: Good idea. The other half said there isn’t enough data on natural immunity, despite the fact that reinfections have occurred in less than 1% of people—and when they do occur, the cases are mild.

But the consistent and rapid decline in daily cases since Jan. 8 can be explained only by natural immunity. Behavior didn’t suddenly improve over the holidays; Americans traveled more over Christmas than they had since March. Vaccines also don’t explain the steep decline in January. Vaccination rates were low and they take weeks to kick in.

My prediction that Covid-19 will be mostly gone by April is based on laboratory data, mathematical data, published literature and conversations with experts. But it’s also based on direct observation of how hard testing has been to get, especially for the poor. If you live in a wealthy community where worried people are vigilant about getting tested, you might think that most infections are captured by testing. But if you have seen the many barriers to testing for low-income Americans, you might think that very few infections have been captured at testing centers. Keep in mind that most infections are asymptomatic, which still triggers natural immunity.

Many experts, along with politicians and journalists, are afraid to talk about herd immunity. The term has political overtones because some suggested the U.S. simply let Covid rip to achieve herd immunity. That was a reckless idea. But herd immunity is the inevitable result of viral spread and vaccination. When the chain of virus transmission has been broken in multiple places, it’s harder for it to spread—and that includes the new strains.

Herd immunity has been well-documented in the Brazilian city of Manaus, where researchers in the Lancet reported the prevalence of prior Covid-19 infection to be 76%, resulting in a significant slowing of the infection. Doctors are watching a new strain that threatens to evade prior immunity. But countries where new variants have emerged, such as the U.K., South Africa and Brazil, are also seeing significant declines in daily new cases. The risk of new variants mutating around the prior vaccinated or natural immunity should be a reminder that Covid-19 will persist for decades after the pandemic is over. It should also instill a sense of urgency to develop, authorize and administer a vaccine targeted to new variants.

Some medical experts privately agreed with my prediction that there may be very little Covid-19 by April but suggested that I not to talk publicly about herd immunity because people might become complacent and fail to take precautions or might decline the vaccine. But scientists shouldn’t try to manipulate the public by hiding the truth. As we encourage everyone to get a vaccine, we also need to reopen schools and society to limit the damage of closures and prolonged isolation. Contingency planning for an open economy by April can deliver hope to those in despair and to those who have made large personal sacrifices.

Dr. Makary is a professor at the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine and Bloomberg School of Public Health, chief medical adviser to Sesame Care, and author of “The Price We Pay.”

Just a little good news for those of you still unwilling to get the vaccine. The whole Plandemic Scare might just fizzle out and die completely before they move to phase two of the vaccinations and use GUILT and HATE to try to force people who don't want it.

Oh... and everything in this article is what I've been saying all along.

I don't agree with the April timeline though. They're not even close to finished with milking this thing yet. Once they pass the next stimulus they won't be incentivized to let it go until late summer. But it might all be over before kids are set to go back to school in the fall.
