Went out for a walk in the rain and got that in but still trying to get something else done. Nothing cooperating.

First coat of paint on the door finished.

Wow. It's only 8:30 and I'm done for the night. First night in 3 days I wasn't wrapping things up after 10PM.

I'm not getting a head start cutting in the 2nd coat of paint today.

The paint wanted to fight me a bit because it's so damn cold on the other side of that door right now. That was a new experience for me. We'll see how it dries tomorrow but I think it will be fine.

It used to be a DARK brown color, so even with a coat of primer and my high-gloss white paint, there's some obvious bleedthru still going on. Fortunately, it appears that the stuff I've cut in with the artist paintbrush is a little thicker and I can barely see the brown at all on that, so if I need 3 coats of paint on the door I think I might only need to cut it in one more time.

I can't wait to see it in the morning when the sun is up.

Got a couple of early phone calls made this morning. Had to leave a message for one person and the other my boss. She's got nothing settled but it looks like I will be heading over there Christmas day for an early supper.

I am out shortly on a dry day. Couple of things to do before my afternoon mah jong game.

The door looks FANTASTIC in the light.

When my old man was over a few weeks ago I'd mentioned that taking care of that door was probably on my short list of things I'd be doing soonish. He thought for sure I meant I was buying and installing a new door and seemed quite skeptical that I'd be able to make it look good.

When I woke up this morning I got an email back with some of the highest praise I think he's ever given me on the work I did yesterday. Usually he just replies "looks great" or something similar, but this time it was more along the lines of "it's amazing how you made that door look brand new and even the glass really pops now".

Personally, with all of the other things I've done over the last few years, I think restoring that door was not all that special even though it's taken about 8 or 9 hours of work so far. I think the last time I impressed him this much with something I did was when I resurfaced the driveway, and that was before I spent 7 months restoring that horrible kitchen.

Thanks.

I'll have to get some before/after pictures up. I should find the long ago before pics when I first got the place instead of the ones from a few days ago when all the trim and the walls were painted.

I just finished the 2nd coat right now. 15 hours of work for one side of that door!

Fingers crossed that I'm done. I believe it's finished, but I won't make that decision until I see it in daylight.

If we're good, I have a little paint to scrape off the glass and we're golden.

I think I'm taking a break tomorrow.

Well... Got something done that was the furthest thing from my mind when I woke up this morning.

First I scraped the little bit of paint off the glass on the front door and got the bits of privacy film back up. It looks awesome. I'll post pictures eventually.

After that, I was still in the mood to do something but with Chrismas coming up and a trip down to my brother's I didn't want to start anything major.

And then I saw it... That little piece of baseboard for the corner by the bottom of the stairs going to the 2nd floor just taunting me.

Before I even conceived the idea of trimming out the stairwells and using the quarter round backer, I knew that SOB was going to be a project to put back since changes had been made years and years ago.

But now I had to also cut it shorter since it no longer met with the baseboard on the corner AND I had to round it down to fit nicely around the quarter round I'd used as backer for the stairwell casings.

Boy... what a job.

That little piece took me the better part of 5 hours to finish today. Extra time was needed because I also had to fabricate a 2nd small piece below it to close the gap because I can't put quarter round back in front of it.

It's all caulked now, but I'm going to wait a few days to spackle it at least. I need to make the two pieces look as though it was one solid piece before painting, but the bottom piece isn't nailed in. It's got a ton of caulk behind it gluing it in and I don't want to put any pressure on that until I know it's completely dry.

I'll definitely be showing pictures of that when it's done. Such a small thing, but even though it's not finished yet it's such a huge improvement.

I'm talking about this piece right here, btw...

Ill be curious to see how you solved that dilemma, bc you have two different baseboards/ casings(?) with different styles and at different heights.

Last year I thought ahead and bought boxes of Xmas, Thanksgiving and Easter cards out of season so I wouldn't have to scramble at the last minute to get my cards out. Thought I was all set. But late November and December blew up, medically, and at this point I'm not sure people will get their cards on time.

And I'm so unprepared for Xmas! I just looked at the calendar yesterday and went "Holy f@ck! It's THIS MONDAY!" That's what happens when you're immersed in an emergency situation. The only gifts that will be opened this year were sent to us by mail.

Sigh. I'm falling further and further behind instead of making progress. Since my treatments ended late 2022 I thought 2023 would be smoother sailing. Instead, it was all things medical again - kidney damage and mild heart damage from treatment, a discovered autoimmunity, a bizarre sinus infection that will need IV antibiotics, a possible dx of sarcoidosis, and mystery calcifications in my lungs. And now a cancer marker in my blood is a little elevated. I won't know until March whether that is significant or not.

That was just me. Family has their own problems.

And friend who got facially scalded not quite two weeks ago. Fortunately is healing well, altho looking really awful.

I sure hope 2024 is better than 2023!

I was in a grocery store when I realized that I had left my umbrella somewhere, so after leaving Walmart I went back into the mall to look for it. I found it in a store that sells comics and collectables and gaming stuff. I had gone in there and bought myself a Christmas present. A forest Leia. Just figured out that I don't have a Luke Skywalker! Need to get one of him. I have Han.

Picture time

Not much to show here. Tons of work, but mostly boring.

I couldn't find pictures of when I bought the house, so just some before/after pics of the 15 hours spent getting the door up to standard. But with all that experience I got working with this paint on similar style cabinet doors, this thing looks brand new and as if it were sprayed this color at the factory now.

I've already got a matching deadbolt/handle like the ones I put in the kitchen and on the porch door that will go up whenever I get around to painting the outside of the door and the jamb out there.

I think I shouldn't have any problems finding replacement oil rubbed bronze hinges for this door, but they're slightly larger than the interior door hinges I bought and have been using to replace hinges on the interior doors in the house as I've finished them. So hopefully I won't have to scrape these down and spray paint them like I did on the kitchen door. At the very least, if I can't find matching replacements I should at least be able to take these off one at a time and clean then up and spray paint them outside during the spring.

Between that and just getting that dumb little piece of baseboard on the stairwell finally installed the room really looks done.

The baseboard piece isn't finished yet, but I'll put pics up when I sand the spackle down and paint it.

Oh... and I think one of my next projects is going to be making thresholds for the coat closet and the pantry where I put the flooring I used in the kitchen. They never had them before, but I think we can do better than just having the sloppy looking bare end of the flooring sticking out from under the door.

I'm just not going to be paying the $20 they want for a finished threshold at the store when I'm perfectly capable of making one on my own out of scrap wood I've already got sitting out in my garage these days.

Thanks Sigs.

I know! It's so exciting now. Been working on this damn place to varying degrees for over a decade now minus those years I lost to the really bad alcoholism there. But until I got that porch finished earlier this year and the stuff I've done over the last few months I never felt like any real headway was being made because I never actually got anything finished.

It's starting to actually feel like a home instead of just some dumb dirty bundle of sticks that keeps the rain off my head.

I love how the light plays off of the paint at different times of day/night too. That corner looks like one of the two walls there is an accent wall in the artificial light at night, but those two walls are painted the same color. It's the wall opposite of that entry door that was painted a different color.

When my friend's dad told me last year I had to do something about the kitchen/porch door because the porch was a Cadillac that was missing a hubcap, that could pretty much describe every room in my house except for the master bedroom. Even now, I still have to paint the bathroom and attic doors on the 2nd floor, because they're dirty brown and all the other doors in the house are white now, so unfortunately you can still see that bathroom door from the livingroom and kitchen.

I'll probably take that bathroom door off and do that this winter too. I live alone... what do I care if I can't close the door for a few days? I can't do the attic door until spring since that door keeps the super cold attic air out of the rest of the house, but it's tucked away in a corner behind the steps going into the basement so nobody can see that from the 1st floor.

Those doors are heavily stained with poly on top, so they're going to need to come down and be sanded down real good before I do them. I'm going to need to buy a new cordless sander because I think I just beat the hell out of mine with all those kitchen cabinet interiors and when I went to use it on something late this summer it was just scratching the hell out of everything and making strange noises. I'm going to see if maybe something is just loose and I can fix it first though.

Oh... BTW...

I weighed myself for the first time in about a month today. I was 158.6lbs.

Until I start really lifting weights and packing on some muscle again, that's just about the perfect weight for me. So I've put on 15 lbs now since my diagnosis.

The pumps were kind of a pain to change at first, but I can get that done in under 10 minutes now without looking up how to do it again. It's so nice not ever having to remember to take my daily shot and poke myself a bunch of times during the day with the rapid shots.

Hopefully in the future these companies work together better and iron out some of the kinks, but overall it's hardly an inconvenience anymore dealing with all of this.

I wish I had all my old Star Wars toys. I don't know what ever happened to them. After a couple of moves my brothers and I still had most of our Thundercats and He-Man toys, but all those Star Wars toys just disappeared somewhere along the way.

I don't even have any of them anymore. I'm hoping my middle brother kept them. He's the guy with the basement man-cave full of collectables all over the shelves, so if any of us managed to keep any of them it's him.

Somehow I still have a bag full of about 50 M.U.S.C.L.E. Men tucked away in one of my "sentimental" totes. I don't even remember how I ended up with those. But that's it for the old toys.

The real bummer was my youngest brother selling off all of our old video game systems and games after me and my other brother left home. I don't really care since it's easy enough to play any of them with technology today, but it's just painful to know how he was trading them in for new games for pennies at a time when the market was low and now those games are worth so much with the retro comeback. Some of those games we had even without the boxes go for a couple hundred bucks today on ebay.

How's your Forest Leia doing without Luke around? She and Han keeping out of trouble.

That is rough about things being lost or sold. :(

Like me missing all my old comic books. I had to sell them years ago as I just couldn't keep them any more. And trying to get any of them back is a real pain.

Oh, yeah. Forest Leia is good and actually sticking pretty close to Han. I probably won't be able to get Luke until after Christmas and the New Year.

Yeah... My buddy is in bad shape right now. At least his wife and daughter seem to have avoided catching whatever he's got so far. Poor guy has been in bed for days now while they're going to the family gatherings. I called his wife the other day when he hadn't gotten back to me for about 24 hours just to see how everyone was doing and she and the kid were at one of the family parties. She was still cooking yesterday even though nobody was coming over to her house and she was going to drop off some lasagna and some presents they had for me, but I said we should just put it off until he's feeling better and get together next week whenever everybody can come out. She loved that idea, so we're just going to do it another time. I didn't want her to drop whatever she was doing and drive out to my house to drop off food, although lasagna is my favorite food and I was really looking forward to that.

I hope they didn't go all out on the presents or anything. I surprised everybody last year when I brought a whole bunch of wrapped presents for everyone including his in-laws, but the year just kind of got away from me and I didn't do anything like that this year.

Picture Time

Finally painted a first coat on that missing piece at the bottom of the stairs. It still needs a light scuff sand and and 2nd coat, but since I'm going to be re-painting all the white on the entire staircase I'm just going to do this piece's final coat when I get around to doing the rest of it.

This was the original piece I'd taken down many, many years ago. I don't even remember how it was put up there originally, and the few pics I do have of the staircase don't help me figuring that out. Obviously, it used to go to an outside 45 degree with the wall side of the baseboard and that piece doesn't exist anymore, but even before I cased out the stairway this piece didn't fit anymore, so I know I must have changed something.

I dug out all the crap out of that hole in the ground, and I used a small screwdriver and hammer to bust out the sides of the long piece of hardwood that would have interlocked with another piece so there was nothing in the way of it.

Then I just cut out a small piece of scrap baseboard that was already painted and fit it in there tight with a lot of caulk under it.

I'm sure there was some quarter-round here before covering it, but we wouldn't be using that anymore so I didn't want to have a big gap in the floor when I was done.

After cutting my piece down to size I had to spend an inordinate amount of time rounding down the edge just right with my files.

And this is where the mystery came in for me. This piece is short on the bottom. at first I thought it was possible I added that quarter round on top and it used to fit right on top of the main piece instead, but if that were the case then it wouldn't match up with the corner piece on the wall. It was probably just like this, but it had a block in the bottom and the quarter round shoe in front of it so you didn't see that. I still don't know why they would have done it that way.

... Because of that, I had to cut out another piece. Nothing here has to be perfect... except for the right edge. Since I couldn't shoot that bottom piece in with brad nails, I just had to load the back with a ton of caulk and push it into place and let it set for a few days before spackling anything.

And here's the painted results.

And another angle.

Not too shabby. I can't think of any better way I could have done it. Had I possessed a really nice drill press or the correct router bits and a router table, I could have probably saved a LOT of time that was spent filing the piece down, but I still got the job done.

I am going over to my boss' house for supper today. Have to be there by 5pm, she said and I just hope we eat at a reasonable time.

I will go out for a walk in a bit just to see what is what then I will clean up my place a bit before I had out for supper.

Better take a snack bar in your purse so your blood sugar doesn't go too low.

Don't worry I will make sure I eat before I go and then grab a coffee on my way over there. There will be Tim Horton's open for sure. I'll be fine.

Yeah... I asked my dad if he knew what I was talking about and he said "yeah. I noticed it every time I went upstairs to the bathroom".

Of course he did. I'm sure that's where I get it.

I've been looking at that every time I used those stairs for about 12 years now. Nice to NOT notice it anymore.

Got back from supper at 9:30pm. They broke their record, we didn't sit down until 7:30 to eat. But it was okay.

We ended the days before Christmas with even the dog being sick. I don't know what she got into, or what got into her, but she was really really under the weather for a day. Without getting into all the gory details, it was all gastrointestinal.

But she recovered, and despite all the pop-up health issues we've been having, and a morning of kitchen work and tidying up, we had a nice Christmas. I had my friend from the foothills over for dinner. Nothing fancy: rib roast, sweet potato, green beans, cherry pie and eggnog. Little Xmas lights up on the potted palm, gifts to go around that my sis sent thru the mail. Friend brought a nice bottle of brandy to sip and we had a companionable relaxing evening.

So now I have to get back on my diet and back to chores, but a nice time was had by all.

Oh, I know what you mean! There are some things ... or, in our house, many things .. that just kind of grate on my nerves every time I see them. I could be busy with other things, don't have time to get to it, maybe not even for a long time. But still. It grates.

Every. Single. Time.

And such a relief when I don't have to notice it anymore!

You'll get to them eventually.

The thing here is when everything looks bad, especially when nothing was getting done, it doesn't even feel like it's worth doing small things like that. I didn't exactly bother keeping the house very clean for a long time because even if I busted my ass 2 days straight cleaning it from floor to ceiling it still looked like crap. Now, especially since I have people over way more often, I'm cleaning all the time. Not only that, but my general living behaviors have just changed so that the place never gets as dirty as I used to allow it to in the first place.

I figure once I redo the kitchen countertop/sink and remodel the bathroom that will put an end entirely to me letting spots build up a cleaning workload before I get around to doing a big clean.

When I first moved in here, the countertop was the nicest thing in my kitchen, and the bathroom was the nicest room on the 2nd floor. Now they're both eyesores.

So even that little piece is just such a small thing compared to stuff that still needs to be done, but because everything else in the living room and kitchen is done except for the countertop, the overlook spindles and the banisters and stairs, it was time to finally do something about that little eyesore of a spot on the wall.

And I'm glad I waited so long now anyhow. Had I ever done that piece in all the years leading up to me casing out those stairs, I may not have gone to the trouble of casing the stairs, or I may have damaged the piece or even the wall trying to get that piece off so I could.

Like anything else I've done, the novelty of having done it will wear off quickly and I'll forget completely about it. So instead of having a really nice corner piece that took me the better part of a workday to complete resting down there, it's just become a small part of the greater whole and it'll just be nice not having to look at that awful bullseye of a damaged wall spot that was 10 times as noticeable when all the stuff in the direct vicinity started looking great.

Packing and laundry and some light cleanup today. Boring stuff... Going down to visit my brother with my aunt tomorrow to show of the town to her. We're all kind of hoping that she'll like it enough to move down there after she retires. It's a really nice place, and the expenses are way lower than in the suburbs up here. Eventually I want to get down there myself one day. Too bad it got really cold though. Last week's weather would have been perfect for this. At least it won't be snowing though.

The timing is really good on the diabetes stuff too. I don't have to change my sensor for another 8 days and I can change the insulin pod tonight or tomorrow morning right before I go if I want to get the most out of it and I wouldn't have to change it again until after I came back. I'm going to bring an extra one of each though just in case of any failures. Failures have been so rare, but Murphy's Law and all of that, right?

Just got 4 more gallons of paint for half-off after rebate.

Unfortunately, the High-Gloss was the only sheen not on sale and it's the one I'm most likely to run out of soonest since I still have 2 more doors to paint and it's what I do all the trim with. I'm sure it will be on sale soon-ish even if it's not part of one of these really good rebate events.

I had half a gallon or more left of each color in the living room, and I'm going to carry that down into the basement room that has drywall up sometime over the winter. Should probably have been able to do that with the paint I had leftover anyhow, but now I've got an extra gallon of each. Picked up two gallons of flat white ceiling paint for $10 each since there's always a use for that.

Now I just have to figure out if I want the dark color low or high on the walls down there. I'll have to give it some thought how it will look through the overlook and the stairwell.

I might be able to finish the 2 doors and the trim in the one room in the basement with what I've got left of the high-gloss. Really kicking myself now for accidentally dumping that half-gallon of it on the floor of my garage back during the summer last year. I knew eventually I was going to miss it.

Baking. That's for you and one of my sisters. For as much as I'm a family cook, baking still scares me. Too much to go wrong! I'll go as far as making cornbread and fritters. After that, I use premade pie crust. Wish I could weigh in on shortbread, but you're in terra incognito as far as I'm concerned!

I like baking and its not often that I mess up but I did the other day. Oh well. I will take another swing at in a while.

I like to cook too but as I have said cooking for one person becomes somewhat of a drag at certain points.

Haven't made a pie in years as I couldn't finish one now. I was making the shortbread because I wanted a treat.
