Got in and there was a message on my answering machine. Dentist wanted to change my appointment to tomorrow but I can't do that. Called them back and the buttons on the phone didn't want to work, but I got through and long story short there my appointment is still set for next Tuesday.

Then the neurologist's office called with an in person appointment but in a different city that I can't get too as I do not drive and have no one that I can all on to drive me. They just opened this office in this second city. I also proved to the lady over the phone that I can't hear properly because it took me a couple of minutes figure out what city she was talking about. So, she put me on a short list for a early phone appointment. Arrrrggghhhh!!!!!

You would think that the neurologists office would know about your not driving. I mean, its part of your medical record.

Well... It's not what I was hoping for, but there is a sale on closet rods this week.

I was considering just buckling down and paying full price for the crappy 8 foot poplar rods they have in stock for about $16.50 a pop, but I found out from the online store that they currently have their 8 foot Oak closet rods on sale. After sale price and rebate, it basically comes out to the same price of $16.50 per rod. Their 72" Oak rods are on sale as well, and though I'd only be able to get 2 pieces out of that instead of 3, they come to $9.99 after sale and rebate, so it would be cheaper. I think the only problem there is that the local store doesn't have enough of them in stock and I'd have to buy a mix of those and the longer ones for the job.

Since these are being painted, it's not a huge deal which ones I go with. Yeah, Oak is stronger than poplar, but nobody is going to be sitting on this thing. If somebody was roughhousing and threw somebody else into the overlook, I don't think the poplar rods would break before the screws that will be holding them in broke, so it's not like having oak rods would make the thing any stronger to freak accidents.

But the poplar rods are notably shit. I would never hang them in a closet after staining them. They look like somebody pressed and glued a bunch of wood boards together before cutting them to size and turning them. There's even some bits missing in places that probably chipped off in the turning process that I would have had to fill with wood putty and sand down before painting the rods. At least with the oak rods they're solid wood pieces that won't need much prep.

I think I'd better figure it out today. Huge snow storm is coming, likely late Thursday night into the weekend, and then the temperature bottoms out for a week or two. I'm planning on having my old man come by to visit tomorrow before that happens, so if I'm going to do this I'd better plan out what I need and do it today.

Yes, they were clods. And I reiterated to my family doctor when I told him about the seizure that I don't drive.

Buses are just not an option for me when I have to go that far. I have only been to this city in a car.

Yeah, same here. I finally got a bunch of paperwork completed but in the meantime we had one good rainstorm and some sprinkles. Just enough to get the weeds and annual grasses growing again. Damn, but those things spread a lot of seed!

So I was watching them grow while I was working inside. Now I have to plan what to tackle first to minimize overall work. Needs some thought.

I think some areas need weeding cause the grasses/ weeds got too big for weed spray. Waiting for the spray to come on, but meanwhile I got more builder's paper and as soon as I finish weeding and grading and digging a trench for the irrigation PVC pipe gonna paper that too. Good thing I already papered a bunch of places, that saves a lot of work.

Well, time to walk the dog and do dishes! Yesterday we met a friendly and very playful Jack Russell terrier that we met before. Zippy really wanted to play. But on the way back, she stepped on a bee and got stung in the paw. So I had to pull the stinger out when we got home and gave her 10 mg of Benadryl and all was well.

Well you seem to be keeping busy despite your issues. Sorry to hear about the bee sting, but it sounds like doggo is doing a lot better otherwise.

I got my oak poles today. Super stoked about being able to work on that now and finally getting the overlook done.

They're really nice, especially compared to that poplar crap that I was going to buy. They're also 1 5/16", so they're going to be quite a bit beefier than I was originally going to go with. This should look really nice when it's done, and it should at least give the illusion that it's all built like a tank. I still don't think it would hold up to a bar-fight style brawl between two kids and if they threw each other into it they might just end up landing on the cold tile floor below one day, but hopefully the future owner isn't a single mom with 3 boys like my mom was.

I already mailed out the rebate while running other errands, so super proactive day and everything I need is in my house long before the first snowflake falls.

Once I get the rebate back, it will be $113.98 for the wood, which is not a bad price in today's economy, especially for oak. I even have one extra rod, so if I don't screw up any cuts I'll be able to get an extra $10.69 back off that price.

I'm hoping that I don't need to use all 10, because 9 of them are straight as an arrow, but the 10th one has a bend to it and also has a visible knot that I'd need to fill in with wood putty before painting it. I just wanted to make sure I bought enough for the job in case while the sale was on, even though that last one is a bit janky. I could have drove to the other store about 7 miles away, but since it was only 1 piece I decided I'll just take my chances that I won't need it instead.

Hehe... That's the tricky part, ya see.

I've been looking at that for YEARS and trying to figure out how I was going to do it.

When I was telling my buddy and my old man about how I was waiting for a sale on the wood, they both had a different idea for what to do. My buddy told me to use metal (like conduit) to make the spindles, and my old man said he'd use PVC.

First off, no matter how good you painted either of them, they wouldn't look as good as wood, but secondly, now that the thing is framed out I wouldn't be able to attach either of them to the existing structure.

What I'm going to do is take my sweet ass time cutting each individual spindle to the exact measurements and angles required. These will not all be the same size and shape, because unfortunately I didn't build the whole thing from scratch and I'm not exactly working with a bunch of level and plum right angles here. This is why it's great that I get about 12" to 13" of play with each pole so I have plenty of room to work with.

(The finished product is going to look great and nobody is going to notice that anything is off unless they carry around torpedo levels in their pockets, but unless I want to spend a lot of time using wood putty on the tops and bottoms of the spindles there's going to be a lot of careful 1 and 2 degree angle cuts).

Once those are all cut, they will be numbered on the top/bottom from left to right (either 1-to-18 or 1-to-20, depending on how many I'm going to use).

At that point, I'm going to use my drill to put in pilot holes and then use a countersink bit to drill down holes from the side down into the middle of the base at the top and bottom, and then a big beefy 2 1/2" or 3" wood screw is going to secure the poles to the top and bottom.

These holes will then be filled in with wood putty, sanded down and primed, and then the whole thing is going to get one more coat of paint.

In a perfect world, I'd own a $6,000 pocket hole machine, but that's just not the reality we live in. I'm going to see if there is a cheaper alternative like a simple jig that I can attach to the spindle for the correct angle, otherwise I'm just going to have to be very, very careful when doing them so I don't split the wood and/or the screws aren't way off center when they come out the bottom.

Maybe I can even make something that will assist with this job if they don't have what I'm looking for or it's too expensive a solution. It would be worthwhile having assistance here since I will be making 36 to 40 of these holes and there's a lot of potential problems that could be avoided if I had help with it.

The simple facts that they're made out of Oak and they're pretty thick at 1 5/16" is going to make this a lot easier of a job than if I'd only gotten poplar or pine and/or I bought spindles that were only 3/4" or less.

Obviously, I'm going to have quite a few cutoff pieces and I will be using them as guinea pigs before committing to trying this on a real piece.

NOTE TO SELF: It would probably be wise to start off with pilot holes from the center of the ends of the spindles outward to the side of the spindle, and then using the countersink bit from the sides down to the end of the spindle just so we're sure the screws are going to come out of the center of all the poles.

I will also want to be making the holes all face toward the porch. Since these are going to be painted it's not a huge deal, but if somebody got up close and personal and really looked at the finished product they're almost certainly going to notice the difference in the paint job over the sanded down wood putty compared to the paint that's on the wood grain. If they're all facing the same way they'll at least look uniform, and if they're all facing to the side that the porch is on the chances that anybody would even ever be standing in the kitchen or the basement from an angle where they'd notice them would be very slim.

Deep cleaning today since I got up early and had the time to do it before my old man gets here and I didn't have much to do in the way of de-cluttering.

Human beings are gross. My keyboard was filthy and I don't even eat or drink by it. I just haven't cleaned the damn thing in I don't even know how long it was. If it were a normal sized one I'd probably just have thrown it out since I have 3 or 4 brand new spares up in storage, but this is a compact board that fits nicely on my coffee table and isn't as easy to come by. One of these days I should probably get around to popping off all the keys and giving them a nice bath in vinegar or something. The faces of the keys are all shiny and new now, but getting in between the keys didn't really work out all that well.

I think I'll clean the 2nd toilet since that hasn't been done for a while. Probably sweep and vaccum the basement floor while I'm at it too. Laundry is already folded and put away instead of being sprawled all over the bed. First floor and my main bathroom are already done, so this will probably be the cleanest the old man has ever seen the house since I owned it.

It will be a nice way to show off all of the trim work I've done on the windows and the stairway area as well as finishing both the kitchen/porch door and the livingroom door since the last time he was over here.

Good tip. I'll have to see what I've got.

I do have some small artists paint brushes, but I use them for actual painting and cutting in difficult corners and the tops of trim and the like. There's no way I want to introduce whatever oils came from my fingers onto that keyboard in those bristles. I'm sure I've got something in the house already that would do a better job getting in between the keys than trying to use my surface wipes.

Gross...

So much for "warmer than average temps with less than average snow" this winter in these parts.

We're about 4 hours into a 2 day snow storm that's going to bring 8-12 inches by me. That's not the bad part though. It's the fact that when I wake up tomorrow morning I will have already missed the high of 22 degrees for the day and it will go down all day and night to -2, and then the high over the next 3 days will be 1 degree, with lows at night in the double digits and wind chill down to the -20's. From there it warms up a little, but we won't have another day that barely peeks over freezing point until the 23rd of January.

It appears it will stabilize over freezing point by the 2nd week of February, but we're in for a VERY COLD January by me.

This is all pretty much new. The forecast didn't look like this a week ago. I guess some pretty big weather event is happening right now.

We're talking winds of 50mph or more around here over the next few days, and I've even seen some claiming that there will be blizzards and even tornadoes through the midwest.

I'm going to get myself ready to go out and at least shovel the sizable amount that's fallen already (I believe the snow is pretty front-loaded in this event). Normally I'd wait until much later to make it worth my while, especially since I have a beast of a snowblower for the driveway that can do about 16" of snow at a time before it starts complaining, but sometime during the 10AM to Noon hours it's supposed to turn into rain too before going back to snow and I'd rather not have frozen ice on my walkway for the post office employees to slip on.

And even though I knew this event was happening and I thought I was completely prepared for it, I'm not. I did all the errand running I need to do, but on the off chance I want to start working on finishing the overlook I'm not going to have an easy time screwing things in when my screws are out in the garage, and all of my levels and straight edges I'll need to mark off where the spindles go are out there too.

Nasty day today and tomorrow before the deep freeze sets in.

Had about 5" of very wet and heavy snow when I shoveled and hit the driveway with the snowblower earlier. Usually my blower can handle 12 to 16", but it was not throwing this stuff very far, so with how wide my driveway is I was doing a lot of double work from the center out.

It got a little bit warmer than it was supposed to get, so a lot of the snow we were going to get today is actually rain and sleet. Terrible for driving conditions, but not so bad when you don't have to shovel it up. I certainly wouldn't want to be on the road at all for any reason the next 36 or so hours around here.

I don't think I really even need to go out again like I thought I would by tomorrow afternoon. We might only have about an extra inch of a dusting after the rain is done. But I am going to have to go out when it stops raining/sleeting to clean up the end of my driveway now that the plows went through. I blew the shit off the street about 5 feet away from my whole driveway, but the idiot plow guy really mucked it up anyhow. With the current conditions and about 2 weeks before we see temps above freezing again, I don't want that iceburg at the end of my driveway. It's liable to tear my nylon fuel line right off the bottom of my car if I let it harden.

Cut the first two poles and dry fit them.

This is going to be a very tricky job, but eventually I'll find my groove. I think the best thing to do is to cut all the pieces to size before priming and painting anything. I'll probably make my pilot/countersink holes before painting anything too. They will all need to be sanded down before painting as well since every one of them can be a bit rough in certain spots.

I've made "crosses" with thin pencil lines on the bottom board, and I'll have to make crosses centered on the ends of the poles and up the side to match them to. I'll probably also start some minor pilot holes on the bottom board in the center of the crosses to start the tips of the wood screws too, just so I know that everything matches up right on the bottom.

Once the bottoms are in place, I've got to use a level to make sure that each one is perfectly straight before driving the screws in upward. Having the screws in the tops to lightly turn into the top board to keep them in place when I'm trying to level them all out should make that part of the job a hell of a lot easier than trying to level them out freehand like I did today when just trying to put my "proof of concept" together.

It's going to take 19 poles, so I've only got enough wood to mess one up, otherwise I'm going to have to buy more when they aren't on sale to finish the job. The span is exactly 98", so I'm putting the center of the first pole on either end exactly 4" from the side jambs, and then the center of every pole will be exactly 5" apart from each other. Because the poles are 1 5/16" wide, there will be plenty of overlap to ensure that no pole-to-pole span is 4" wide or more, so everything will be up to code.

This is going to be a pretty long project I'd imagine by the time it is done. I'm striving for perfection here. When you're off to the side looking at this I want every single one of those 19 poles to line up perfectly with each other.

So... hopefully that 10th pole I had to buy with a bit of a bend is up to the task since I won't be making any returns and I'll need every one of them. I did hold it up to the rack at the store and it appears that the bend only starts a little more (or less) than halfway on one side of the pole, so I should be able to get one straight pole out of it.

I found this while cleaning up my PC files.

IT IS A GIFT TO DIE IN MAY

It is a gift to die in May—
An easy task to dig a grave,
And nightingales will sing their song
Inimitably, like their last.
In May, the thunder of storms supplants
A funerals’ dismal songs and sounds,
And rain that comes instead of tears
Dissolves the memories’ regret.
The shelt’ring barrow of the grave
Beneath the emerald of grass;
A cross is a redundant mark
Among a grove of weary birch.
Beneath the rustling newborn leaves,
With irrepresible thirst for life,
The sun has yet to burn the grass,
And every thing is animate.
It is a gift to die in May,
To stay behind in vernal dew.
And though I could not do it all,
There are no doubts where none remain…
It is a gift, to die in May…

If anyplace has a demographic crisis, it's Ukraine.

20 million mostly young people have left. That's half of the original population of 40 million. About a half million men (that's 500,000) have been killed or severely wounded in the war so far. The birth rate is near zero.

It will take generations for Ukraine to recover.

You asked me a question and accused me of not answering. I answered and you change the subject. Russia moron, you asked a very specific question about Russia; not Ukraine. Why did you do that? Because you can't refute my explanation to your question. Bottom line, Russia's fucked.

No dummy, I'm saying it already collapsed. It will take some time for all the effects of that to show, but it is already starting too. It's one of the reasons Putin invaded Ukraine. To steal their resources. One of which is its population. Too bad for him Russia wasn't up to the task. The invasion wound up escalating Russia's downfall.

It's why Putin is stealing children from there. You'll deny it, so what. You cannot deny it is why the civilized world put out an arrest warrant for Putin.

I was questioning the "food lines" part of the prediction

And you haven't answered the question: If Russia has been sanctioned to hell and back and is doing great, how would this big collapse happen?

I mean, the grain harvest is in, they reportedly had a great crop. They make their own fertilizer. So unless they suffer a catastrophic collapse of summer vegetables, hay and other animal feed, how is this "famine" supposed to occur?

I use a small tipped paint brush to clean around the keys on my keyboard. Picks all the dust and other small gunk that collects around them.

Snow today where I am. So, I will need my boots and cane when I go out. Also got wind whipping around me as the glass on my balcony and above me is rattling. But I got a couple of small things to do.

So out in the cold I go. Computer temp is reading -12C in the sunshine.

Beneath the emerald of grass;

I can manage a couple of days of yardwork in a row (only about an hiur or two each day) but then my insteps hurt and my knees get stiff. Getting old ain't what it's cracked up to be.

Even so, I'm making progress. Especially pleased with the areas covered with cardboard or builder's paper and mulch; it's really cut down on the weeds. Now I'm not starting all the way at the beginning every spring. Tomorrow I'm going to try out a different weed killer, well-rated and more environmentally friendly, but if it doesn't work i still have the glyphosate on hand.

I still love the fact that you have a flamethrower for the weeds. I giggle every time I think about it.

I imagine Ripley with an AARP card in her back pocket and a giant flamethrower in her hands saying "Get away from my house you Bitch!" before you get to work.

Yeah... Here too Brenda.

I've spent about 6 collective hours the last two days taking care of the snow in prep for it. At least we shouldn't get more than a flurry or two in the next 10 or so days now, but I wanted to make sure that all the drainage everywhere was unhindered for when this all eventually melts and that I didn't have any dangerous ice buildup anywhere now that we're going to dip below freezing tonight and stay there for the next 3 or 4 days. They're saying -35 F with the wind chill until sometime on Wednesday.

As long as my power stays on with the 50MPH+ winds coming our way, I should be okay.

Now that that's done, I think I may spend the rest of the daylight working on the pole project. I'm hoping that any time spent today goes a bit quicker than it did yesterday. I doubt there's enough time left in the day to get all the poles cut to length so I can start putting in my pilot holes, but any progress is that much less to do the next day.

Time to regroup and think about how I want to do the overlook.

My problem is 3-fold right now.

1. This is my first time working with hard wood for any serious projects. I didn't take into account exactly how hard hardwood is.

2. Making pocket holes in the poles isn't going to work, at least not with my current tools on hand.

The countersink bits I've got don't drill down far enough into the stock to make enough clearance for the heads of the wood screw to clear to the inside. If I go from a very drastic angle I can make it work, but then I'm not screwing down into the bottom and top pieces from the sides and that leads to problem 3.

3. The spindle wants to travel on me when I'm screwing it into the base. It's not a drastic move, but anything less than perfect here won't do. The current way I planned to do this leaves far too many variables and with 19 poles going in I could end up having every single one of them slightly off from each other, likely anywhere from 1/16th to 1/8th of an inch in 360 degrees.

Now my brad nailer IS able to get brad nails down into the board through the oak, and it does appear that if I shot about 4 into each one that it would hold good, but I have to be careful that I shoot it in a enough of an angle that it goes through the oak piece and doesn't just curl outside of it. I'd also have to worry about brad nails hitting each other and curling as I went around the pole.

But every single nail would have to be further tapped in with a punch, since even on the strongest setting on my nailer it doesn't go all the way through both pieces of wood. This could be problematic as well since even if I did manage to install them perfectly centered this way I'm liable to knock them off center when I'm tapping the brad nails the rest of the way in with the punch.

And honestly, I don't think I could put them in centered. When I shot the brad nails in there, I already had the spindle clamped down tight to the board with the screw that made it travel about 1/16th of an inch. If I were putting these in without screws, I'd have to rely on my off-hand to be a vice grip that didn't allow the piece to travel while I was also focusing on pressing in the safety of the brad nailer on the correct angle to get the nail through both pieces without curling on me.

Yeah... That's not going to work either.

My old man had an idea that I just kind of scoffed at yesterday when I was firm that I'd be using pocket holes with wood screws, but his idea might work.

I could probably get myself a box of finish nails and tap them in. I might have to actually drill a pilot hole first just to make sure nothing splits on me here. I'd almost certainly have to do it for the first nail in the bottom and top to make certain that they land in the correct place and don't scoot over on me while hammering them in and see how it goes from there. I'd need more than one on the top and bottom, but I could probably get away with only 2 or 3 for each spindle and still have a strong connection. I'm just imagining now what a nightmare that's going to be when I'm driving nails up into the top piece while I'm sitting crosslegged on my kitchen floor. ughhhh....

Well... Live and learn. If I had to do it all over again, I would have done what I considred doing in the first place and I would have built the whole thing out in the garage, placed it in the opening and shimmed it out wherever it needed to be shimmed and then I would have put all the casing up last.

That's not an option now unless I want to destroy a lot of finished work, so I'll have to take a step back and think on it for a while. Maybe I can find some suggestions on youtube.

Oh... and none of the stuff I mentioned above was done with good spindles or my finished work. I was doing all of this with my first 13" cutoff spindle on the cutoff from the board I used to make the bottom piece on the overlook.

Yanno... Maybe I could do something else...

I could probably fabricate two more pieces out of thin stock, both of them 98" long, and say... 3 3/4" wide and 3/4" thick, one for the top and one for the bottom. Then I could make all the same measurements I'd planned on using for the spindles and use a hole saw to cut perfect circles that I could slide all the spindles into, and then install the whole thing by simply placing it inside the current construction and the only thing I'd need to do then is use my brad nailer to get the top and bottom pieces affixed to the current construction.

I could use my router to make nice rounded ends on the front (kitchen) and back (basement).

It would actually look even more fancy than what it's already going to look like and it might save me a lot of time and/or heartache.

Once all that was in, I could caulk them all solid so they didn't just spin around in there too if I wanted to.

Yanno what... I think that's what I'm going to do.

It will have to wait for a while though. I'm not pulling out my woodshop tools in the garage when it's -35 outside with the windchill.

Here's what I plan to do since it probably doesn't come across as good in words as I'd like it to.

After I sent that to my old man he still wanted some clarification and then asked if I would be gluing the spindles to the bottom piece before installing it. I hadn't considered that before, but it's a good idea. Instead of tapping in some brad nails to secure the poles after it's all installed I might be able to get away with extremely minimal paint touchups on top of the nails holding in the top and bottom plates if I took the extra time and work to do that first.

My initial plan was going to be to clamp the two pieces together and use the hole saws all the way through both pieces, but if I only went down 2/3rds through the bottom piece and carefully chiseled out the parts I wanted cut out I could drop all of them in the holes with glue and then the top piece would be the only one "floating" around the poles.

Or, honestly, if the center bit I use for the hole saw is small enough I could countersink through the bottom and put screws straight through the bottom of the spindles.

I dunno though. I might not do that. Unless I find a hole saw that cuts the holes so the poles fit in there super snug on the top and bottom, I might risk gluing them in just slightly off center before I have the pieces up so I can level everything. I'll have to see how it goes as I'm doing it and keep all my options open as long as possible.

It's so freakin cold out now though. I'm not doing crap for the next 3 days. I wouldn't even want to paint the walls in the one semi-finished room that you can see through the overlook and stairwell in the basement because I don't know if the paint would dry correctly if I did.

I took the cast iron banister going downstairs out finally. I was going to bring it out to the garage along with the cast iron crap that used to be in the overlook, but I'm not even going out there until Tuesday. It's cold enough in the basement as it is.

I patched up the wall where the banister was bolted. It will probably take quite a long time to dry, but when it does I can sand it down and primer it so I can eventually get around to putting up the casing on that side of the overlook.

Probably all the work I'm doing today.

I lied... I wanted that crap out of my house. All the wrought iron is out in the garage until I figure out what I'm going to do with it.

Jesus it's cold outside. It didn't feel especially warm inside even though I've turned the thermostat up several degrees higher than it's been in years, but when I walked back inside from being out there for only a minute or so it felt like I walked into a sauna. (It is currently 70 degrees warmer inside my house than it is outside, not including the wind chill).

Now at least I'll have room to work around my benches and the horses down there to do the window and wall repairs before painting that I want to get finished without everything being in the way.

Not today... Maybe tomorrow.

Your weather made it to WNY. Howling wind, really cold temps, and with the added benefit of lake effect snow. A lot of school closures (Wimps! Back in my day they never closed schools!) Sis texted she couldn't even see across the street. Apparently they had crews from out of state staged for downed powerlines.

But she survived. No outages. She has a super efficient furnace and well-insulated home, and stocked up for a week of no driving. And since her workplace closed, she has nothing to do but stay snug and keep the backdoor clear of snow.

Good for her! She's a busy woman. An enforced vacation will be good for her.

Well, I tried that new weed killer, and it acts FAST. Just sprayed it a couple days ago and the grasses are all brown. Let's see if it really kills it, or if they're going to resprout.

Was gonna do more yardwork today, but I hardly slept last night, so I decided to spend a few quality hours organizing the mess that is my email and PC files. Took doggy out for a walk and she had it in her to go the distance. Then with daughter's ongoing bout of sickness I opted for indoor work and sorted out the mail basket. Found some checks (YAY!) and some bills (BOO!) but at least that's finally squared away.

Hubby is making me a new cutting board bc mine are splitting. That's nice.

Oh, and thanks for the drawing of how you're gonna put that wooden barrier in. Makes it a lot clearer!

Yeah... it's miserable here right now. But this one isn't as bad as the last 10 or so days of December last winter.

To be fair about the schools, if they're just going to be sitting in a class on their smartphones and not learning anything of value, they could just do that at home until it warms up.

Well, my car started this morning. That's good news, I suppose.

The gumment is going to tell me that I can't drive it anymore in May, so going to have to look for other options, but at least it shouldn't have any problems getting me to the summer if it still starts in these conditions.

I don't think I'm doing crap again today. It's plenty warm on the 1st and 2nd floor, but all the work I really need to be doing over the winter is in the basement and the crawlspace, and I just don't want to be down there right now.

That'll teach me for not getting much done last summer.

In theory, anyhow.

PICTURE TIME!

Nothing much in the way of new here, but I did finally manage to find pictures of what the kitchen looked like back before I'd started any work on it. These were labeled March of 2012, so they're vintage now.

These were probably posted to fff.net ages ago back when I wasn't hanging out in the RWED and I was talking to Wish and JO almost every night here.

Seriously... WTF were they thinking?

Somebody went to a LOT of work to create this monstrosity.

Terrible miter work on the overlook as you can see with the top right corner of it in this one. You can also see that they put the wood jambs in underneath and didn't even bother to paint them before installing that awful looking wrought iron.

At this point I must have already torn up the carpeting upstairs and resurfaced all the hardwood floors.

You like that little decorative piece of wood dividing the kitchen and the living room? I didn't.

My sister-in-law knew exactly what those 3 french chefs were. Her and my brother went antiquing and it kind of became a little inside joke. They bought me a little plaque with the 3 chefs on them and I've also got a statue of one of them that may or may not have popped up in some of the kitchen pics that I've shown along the way.

A closer look at the overlook after I'd pulled off that crap trim and patched it up.

You can see here how they didn't know how to make anything nice to edge off the flooring, so they just didn't bother. This nasty chessboard flooring was peeling up all over the place, so it was probably like this for 20 years before I bought the place. They just bolted that wrought iron on top of the tile that was on top of 2 previous sheets of linoleum flooring and called it a day. It was curling up at the ends by the overlook.

My awful, dark, dark kitchen with the busted cabinets and the shoddy face plates on the two ripped out drawers. Too tall and not wide enough for the job, and also stained to a different color than the rest of the broken cabinets.

Chefs all around.

Hey. There's an Icehouse by the sink. That certainly dates the photo. I found a few selfies I took from around this time to and boy was I a fatty.

Oh look! There's the chef statue I was talking about just to the right of the stovetop.

I don't think this one was much later than the other photos. I think I probably snapped this immediately after I'd patched the walls and just painted them all white until I finally got around to doing whatever I was going to do in the kitchen.

And just a refresher on what it all looks like now...

The only "new" thing going on right now... These are the poles that I got for the job, but I won't be doing that until I get the 2 wood boards I'll need to complete the job.

1 degree outside right now and a high of 5 degrees today. It's like a freakin' heat-wave compared to the last 3 days. Sick of this shit.

At least we get up into double digits tomorrow and the pre-wind chill numbers are all positive going forward, but we've still got another 4 nights in the low single digits.

Yeah....

I definitely wish that I'd gotten to that kitchen door sooner. I didn't remove any of the nasty old weather stripping that was in there between the kitchen and the porch and knew I would be doing that in the springtime. But boy... I had no idea how much cold air bleeds through that door. It's a LOT. Like an insane amount. It must have been twice as bad before I got good windows up in the porch and insulated everything too. How did I not ever notice this before?

I'll probably save myself $20 or $30 a year in heating costs just by sealing that door well.
