I almost wonder if I would see a benefit from having a box fan at the end of the bedroom for this little unit?

When I got that big one that first year I was using a fan, but it turned out that I didn't even need to and it was more than capable of cooling off the entire house on its own.

I know that we already know the answer to this question scientifically/mathematically, but I'm never going to learn everything you'd need to know to be able to answer how air and temperature and humidity behave while all those little invisible particles are doing all their little invisible behind-the-scenes work. So the only way to answer that question unless I just try it out and see what happens. That ever annoy you???

Oh well... Tried and true it is.

Already learned a few things I didn't know with the A/C just by trying stuff. I never would have thought you could cool off roughly 1,500 square feet with a 12,000 BTU unit to the point it was uncomfortably cold for some people. None of the online documentation for any 12k BTU unit would make claims more than about 2/5ths of that space.

Since earbuds always fall out of my ears and risk getting drowned in dishwater, hubby bought me one of those cool Bluetooth earbud/ microphones that hook over your ear. With his help, I'm using it now.
And don't I look Hi-Tech while doing dishes!

Cleaning is a lot harder work than most people realize. Especially if you're old like I am, or low on energy.

Speaking of which... those hot temps that have been threatening for the past week or so look like they're finally arriving.

Assuming I can scratch enough time away from appointments (mine, hubby's, daughter's, dog's) and regular chores I should attend to some housecleaning.

Also, there is an opening in the outer brick part of the house (outside of the fireplace and flue) that I paid no mind, since it only leads to an ash cleanout below the fireplace. But the dog started paying serious attention to it this past week, and then serious attention to sounds in our attic space and garage perimeter. And seeing as we have an abundance of roof rats in the neighborhood...

So I got partway thru stuccoing a mesh screen in place (had to run off to hubby's Dr appt B4 could finish) and so far the screen hasn't been dislodged. Checked the garage floor perimeter for signs of rat infestation ... trail of rat droppings, "rub lines" along frequently used runs. So far, maybe found one dropping. But tomorrow I'm going to set a rat trap in the garage, baited with bacon "glued" onto the trip plate with peanut butter, to see if rats are in there.
If not, I'll put it up in the attic.

Oh no, Sigs...

Real "Roof Rats".

I was really hoping that's just what you called the squirrels, cause I call them Tree Rats over here, but I see that's not the case.

Boy I hope you keep them out. Don't you waste any time thinking about getting professional help for that the first time it ever becomes evident what you're trying ain't working. Let us know how that's going.

Sorry to hear you're getting the heat wave we're going to get too. Absolutely miserable in the beginning around here, and it don't look like it's going to let up any time soon after that.

They weren't predicting any of this just a few weeks ago, so here's hoping for everyone that we get toasty for just a little while and it blows back the other way.

As usual, I got derailed from one pressing project to another.

After gardening, I started popping up with itchy bug bites. Was willing to dismiss the ones on wrists and hands as mosquito bites, especially since we have those daytime Egyptian browns and Asian tigers flying around. So I went on an indoor mosquito hunt and killed three (one a CA native).

But bug bites under my arm, and under my waistband? MUCH harder to explain! Two possibilities: baby spiders in the house/ sofa/ bed, or garden mites of some sort that I picked up while trimming up the out- of control climbing roses and raking up/ prepping part of a flower bed underneath for cosmos seeds. Or possibly from the dog, who enthusiastically digs thru the tall grasses and brings whatever home.

In either case, the fix is mostly the same: Wash the dog and her bedding. Vacuum under the bed and nightstands and the baseboards, strip the bed and gather up all clothes worn in the past few days and wash everything in hot water. Take a hot, soapy, scrubby shower.

Mission apparently accomplished: no new bug bites accumulated last night.

Meanwhile, my favorite fix for itchy bug bites of all kinds: soak a cotton pledget with isopropyl alcohol and stick it on with medical tape. Repeat as necessary. Something about alcohol, if it diffuses into skin, it seems to either denature whatever spit that bugs inject, or it puts the nearby nerve endings to sleep.

Finally got around to baiting and setting a Havahart trap outside. That way, if I catch a possum, squirrel, cat or (god forbid) a skunk, I can (carefully!) let it go. The bad part is, I'll have to kill any rats that I catch.

I'll have to get some snap traps for indoors, where skunks, possums, and squirrels won't get caught.

Well, no new bites! I have the chigger(?) problem figured out: Given that 6 bites were under my waistband, 2 on my r shoulder, and none at my ankles, they probably landed on me from the roses when I was crouching under them, and came in on my clothes.

That means I'll have to at least run my clothes thru the dryer (on hot) and take a shower after gardening in the backyard.

Haha... I'm a dummy.

I took myself a little nap this afternoon. When I woke up several hours later I had that dread thought... "oh no... This little A/C doesn't have a chance at keeping the house cool".

Little did I know at the time, because I had YT playing on the TV and the sound of a loud fan drowning it out, my furnace blower (from my furnace in the attic) was blowing all the hot and humid air from the attic into my house!!!

This happened once... many, many years ago. It just hasn't been an issue for so long I forgot about it. It got so hot in my attic today that the furnace thought the burner was on and it was time to start spreading that sweet heat throughout the house.

I don't even have any idea how long that was going on for. 10 minutes? 2 hours?

At that point, the 2nd floor read 78 degrees, and it was a hot and humid 78 degrees.

It's back down to 77 now and a few hours later it seems like quite a bit of that humidity is already out too.

Thanks house.

We're in only the 2nd day out of a 7 day stretch of 90 degree temps. It only got up to 75 before the temps outside started to break yesterday. But at least it cooled off one degree pretty quickly and you can tell that in only several hours it is notably less humid in here. I'm glad I got that dehumidifier in the basement.

This weather needs to cool off. I'm not feeling the digging work I have yet to do and in any normal year I'd have been outside doing that all day today. Just the middle of June here and we're already having temps we usually only see in late July and August of the worst heat wave years in these parts.

Yup...

I'm a little more concerned about what these temperatures are going to mean for the crops. Especially once we stop getting rain.

Something like that would be just another bad thing with some more cascading negative effects for those trying to stay in power before the election, but I don't wish that on us right now. People are hurting enough without more drastic price increases at the grocery store because of drought and food shortages. There are already enough synthetic reasons that's happened for the last 3.5 years. Bad timing that a legitimate reason out of our control might be forcing the issue on top of all that.

That was my problem when trying to catch the moles with the spike traps. They're too damn quick.

You ever try the 5-gallon drowning bucket trick?

I know some have an aversion to treating animals in such a way, but when you're talking animals trying to live in your house I have no sympathy for them.

There's several easy ways that you can set up the traps for them using sunflower seeds or peanut butter. Do it right and you'll have a bucket of dead rats in the morning. YouTube will show you what to do.

Hot as a mofo around here. 75 degrees with a real feel of 83 degrees at 12:30 AM, with the humidity at 83% too.

Forecasts just keep looking worse for this summer.

Now I don't see a single day in the 70s up through August 3rd. Most of those days are in the high 80s or the 90s up through then.

Really hoping that a surprise cold front comes down from Canada and derails this at some point.

At some point I'm going to have to break down and put the other A/C in.

It was a valiant effort, but this thing isn't going to do the trick in a summer like this. Today is the first day that it got up to 78 degrees on the 2nd floor if you don't count the heat going on the other day. It's probably going to edge up to 80 when it never really gets a chance to cool off at night.

The attic feels like it must be over 100 degrees even though its the middle of the night.

It's still not bad in the house because it's dry, but at this point there's no way to stay dry while trying to sleep without a fan blowing directly on me.

Well, I made up for yesterday's disaster with this morning at mah jong. I got first place. I broke 1,000 points after 4 hands, then I had winds and dragons in one hand with 7 doubles which netted a points total of over 11,000. Then later I somehow managed to get all 8 flowers. That alone was 8 doubles and with what else I had in my hand the points on that was over 28,000. So, I finished the morning with over 42,000points.

Also computer temp is reading 28C which is 86F. Pretty warm around here.

Holy smokin' tiles, Batman!

That sounds like an astonishing score!
Cool!

Oh BTW that sounds pretty toasty for near coastal BC. Seems EVERYONE is roasting in N America except us. We're at 85F, which is kind of expected for this time of year.

Well, it's been an interesting two days. My friend from tge foothills came by to go out and have lunch with us, which was really nice.

But after hanging out for a while, she said "I hope I make it back home".
Turns out her car suddenly - like, overnight- developed a serious shimmy. So after she called AAA and we waited for a bit, we checked over the tires and lug nuts (again, she had already done that) and I suggested that she drive down the street slowly so I could see if any of the tires looked like it was wobbling.

NOPE!

But she said at that speed it felt like one if the tires was going over a bump and throwing the car sideways. That's when a lightbulb went on, and I checked the tire treads carefully and found one tire where the tread was coming off and revealing the steel belts. That exact thing happened to me 40 years ago, but it was so weird it stuck in my memory.

Well, the lug nuts were way too tight for us, and way too tight for the AAA guy, he had to call another tow truck with an air drill.

By then it was dark, and I knew she had a Dr appt today, so I offered her the guest bed and to drive her to her appt, which was downtown LA, which I THOUGHT I knew better than her.

Ha!

I took the 5 North instead of the 10 west, and when I found myself heading out to Dodger Stadium and the zoo I realized my goof, got off the fwy and got back on going the other way. Fortunately there was an interchange which I have NEVER used before that got me on the correct Fwy going the right way (110 south), so after that it was ok finding the offices. Of course, finding a fwy entrance in downtown LA to get back home was another story bc the city was built b4 the freeways, and there was so little room for on ramps and off ramps they stuck them in the most unobvious places.

Well, all's well that ends well. She saw her doctor and made it home safe and sound, and tomorrow she's going to get a new tire.

It was pretty astonishing for sure. I wasn't sure that I was going to make winds & dragons because I had one character tile to get rid of but I managed to pick up the last tile I needed for that hand to get rid of that character.

As for the 8 flowers that is extremely rare to get. 4 of one set is usual and sometimes you can get six which is a mix of both sets. The 8 was why the point count was so high. You multiply your score by 256. I had 7 flowers pretty well all at once, so I left space for the last one and I got it. I almost had all 4 flowers of one set earlier in the game but one of the ladies I was playing with got it.

That temp is pretty toasty for coastal BC. We have tomorrow for heat then it cools down. Might get some rain next week. Have to see.

Out for my walk soon but I don't need anything heavy today. I have left overs for supper. Just need to get some bottles out to recycling and maybe hit the library.

Back and in for today. Got 3 t-shirts at a local thrift store but I will have to wash the Frebreeze out of them before I wear them. Good thing tomorrow is laundry day.

First slurpee of the summer sitting on tv tray. My treat for today.

I don't even want to know how much insulin I'd have to shoot up for a Slurpee.

Was it good?

I guess your heat came our way. It was supposed to be 27C (81F) but boy did it overachieve! I checked our outdoor thermometer and it was 33C (91F) and still going up!

I'm trying out a new "summer" schedule, getting up earlier to beat the heat. But today I settled for getting up on time and doing something quiet. It's gonna take me a few days - or more!- to get into the swing of things.

It was very good and I only get a small one. Then I only do it on a really hot day. Too much sugar and heat isn't good for me.
