Trump suggested that his likely Democratic rival “shouldn’t even be allowed to run” for the White House. If the comment rang a bell, there’s a good reason for that:

• In October 2015, Trump said Hillary Clinton shouldn't "even be allowed" to run for president.

• In February 2016, Trump said Ted Cruz was "not allowed" to run for president.

• In March 2016, Trump said John Kasich shouldn't have been "allowed" to run against him in a GOP primary.

• In October 2020, Trump said Joe Biden shouldn't have been "allowed" to run for president.

• And in July 2024, Trump said Kamala Harris shouldn't "even be allowed" to run for president.

Trump has long been taken a keen interest in who should and shouldn’t be “allowed” to run against him, and in a remarkable coincidence, he consistently finds that those who stand in the way are — or should be — ineligible for American ballots.

Trump already earned a reputation as someone who was hostile toward democracy. This won’t help.

"License to steal": Donald Trump's history of fraud emerges as a new threat with SCOTUS decision
Journalist Joe Conason warns about Republican grifting in his new book "The Longest Con"

By Amanda Marcotte | July 25, 2024

https://www.salon.com/2024/07/25/license-to-steal-donald-history-of-fr
aud-emerges-as-a-new-with-scotus-decision
/

Donald Trump is a fraud and a con artist. This isn't an opinion, but adjudicated fact, proved by

1) a New York court that found Trump liable for nearly half a billion dollars for his decades of business fraud.

2) Or another court, which accepted Trump's settlement of $25 million for years of defrauding customers of his fake "Trump University."

3) Or the jury in Trump's criminal case, which convicted him on 34 felony charges for defrauding voters by paying hush money to an adult film actress.

What can still be hard to wrap one's mind around, however, is how a man so shamelessly criminal, who openly treats his supporters like wallets to be picked, is the GOP nominee for the third presidential election in a row. But perhaps it's not so surprising, argues Joe Conason. In his new book, "The Longest Con: How Grifters, Swindlers, and Frauds Hijacked American Conservatism," the journalist and editor-in-chief at The National Memo traces the long marriage between right-wing politics and con artistry. Trump is no anomaly in this history, but the natural result of decades of snake oil salesmen bamboozling the Republican base for political gain and profit.

Conason spoke with Salon about why this history matters for the 2024 election.

This interview has been edited for length and clarity.

We have the Supreme Court's immunity decision. Donald Trump keeps making violent threats and promising retribution. With Project 2025, he's going full fascist. In the pantheon of terrible things about him, one of the least alarming things to most people is that he's a criminal and a fraud. The fraud case he lost fell off most people's radars because everything else about him feels so scary. So why should people care about the fraud angle?

It's all part of a larger whole, right? This is a hugely dishonest person who can't be trusted with the presidency.

JD Vance’s ‘Cat Ladies’ Riff Has Serious ‘Handmaid’s Tale’ Vibes

You may have heard about JD Vance’s “childless cat ladies” riff. But even if you have, it’s worth revisiting the full quote — and reminding yourself of what it says about the movement that may wind up in charge of this country after this year’s election.

In 2021, while running for the Senate, Vance explained what he saw as one of the biggest problems facing America: It’s being run “by a bunch of childless cat ladies who are miserable at their own lives and the choices that they’ve made and so they want to make the rest of the country miserable, too.” He name-checked, among others, Vice President Kamala Harris.

It’s a statement, as my colleague Jessica Grose writes, that shows the desperation of Republicans who are still “clinging to the tag line that the G.O.P. is the pro-family party.” But even for a red-meat, red-state Senate candidate, this was a remarkably harsh — and conspiracy-minded — insult to a large number of people: Around one in six American women 40 to 44 have never had children. It’s the kind of comment that makes you wonder if Vance thinks that he has been nominated by the Republican Party to serve as the vice president of the Republic of Gilead.

Sorry — yes — Vance knows that our nation is still called the United States of America. But there’s a real “Handmaid’s Tale” vibe to a lot of what we’re hearing from the right.

As Vance’s statement illustrates, many people who call themselves conservatives — and who, routinely, as Donald Trump did on Wednesday, accuse moderately center-left Democrats like Harris of being “radical” — are actually the real radicals. That is, they seemingly can’t stand America as it is and want to transform it back into a kind of society we haven’t been for generations. This is especially true when it comes to gender roles.

Modern America is by no means free of sexism. It is, however, a society that offers women far more freedom to choose their paths in life than societies of the past. And it has been that kind of society for a long time.

The Biden factory building boom sets a new record

A few minutes ago I ran across a chart showing that investment in factories had exploded recently and was twice as high as it had ever been in history. It was adjusted for inflation, which is great, but for something that big it struck me that it really ought to be shown as a percent of GDP. So I did:

By a funny coincidence, it turns out that in the second quarter of 2024 we did indeed set an all-time record: 0.854% of GDP compared to the previous peak of 0.847% in 1979.

Putting this into perspective, after falling during Donald Trump's term the rate of factory building has increased 2.5x since Joe Biden took office:

In dollar terms, we're currently spending $244 billion per year on factories compared to $91 billion three years ago. If you believe in restoring America's manufacturing capability, the past three years have been a golden era.

Biden did not emphasize that Trump still refuses to concede his loss in 2020, which means Trump is still a threat to Democracy and won't concede to his loss in 2024.

Biden failed, failed, failed to mention that Trump refused to be at Biden’s inauguration.

“To all of those who have asked, I will not be going to the Inauguration on January 20th,” Trump tweeted, making formal what many had long assumed: that Trump would eschew the traditional step of personally demonstrating the peaceful hand-off of power to President-elect Joe Biden. Jan 8, 2021

Trump became the first outgoing president to refuse to attend the inauguration of his successor since 1869, when President Andrew Johnson stayed in the White House as Ulysses S. Grant was sworn in as the 18th president. Slave-owner Johnson pardoned all the Confederates left alive after Grant tried to kill them, the source of Johnson’s bitterness toward Grant.

AFA favoring the uber rich ... the gini index increased under Trump by 0.01.

But it also increased under Obama by 0.01.

Dems, it seems to me, favor international oligarchs with "free trade" policies and transnational financialist bent. Yanno, the Soros and Klaus Schwab and Black Rock clans.

Repubs, it seems to me, favor national oligarchs. The thing about national oligarchs is that they're subject to national laws and national economic policies.

The transnational oilgarchs? Not subject to anyone.

I know which one I'd pick.

Yeah.

But it doesn't mean I want to see white people disappear either. I don't have a self-hate complex because of the color of my skin like the college "educated" white women do.

White people aren't the problem. There isn't a place on earth where white people are having more than 2.0 children per couple, with many of those countries coming nowhere near that number. It's been this way for decades. It's why the politicians and the Liberal Media are always saying we need to flood all of our borders with illegals so we can keep getting Social Security when we retire.

Well it's either Kari Lake, Vivek Ramaswamy or Tucker Carlson for Press Secretary.

I think Rand Paul is wasted on the Treasury. He wouldn't actually have any power in that position and I want him working on putting Fauci and everyone else involved with Covid in a dark, dank pit where they never get to see the sunlight for the rest of their lives.

And whatever you want to call the position, I want RFK working overtime on destroying the hold that Big Pharma and the Medical Establishment in general have on the American people and the American government. Somebody needs to make medical care affordable for everyone without robbing the people with more taxes to pay for it. I think he and Paul working together could get a lot accomplished in the next 4 years.

Tulsi should have been VP, and honestly, I see no reason why Trump can't just dump Vance right now and make that happen. The game has changed and Vance is now a liability. Trump knows this, although it would behoove him never to admit it unless he makes a swap. Vance himself knows it too, so hopefully he would understand that it isn't his time yet.

Wishful thinking though, huh?

Let's talk about all the things we'd do when we won a Billion Dollars in the next huge Powerball payout after this.

The Trump campaign is not about any cause, it is all about Trump. His campaign is all about him. How he treats other people is all about him—whether one is praised and patted on the head or cruelly mocked depends on what you have said about him.

—Peter Wehner, Conservative Political Analyst, June 2, 2016

You think I’m going to change? I’m not changing.

—Donald J. Trump, May 31, 2016

TRUMP DOESN’T CHANGE

On April 19, 2016, Donald Trump won a landslide victory in the New York State Republican primary. The media hailed his sober, respectful speech as evidence that he was changing, that a “new” Trump had emerged, one who would heed the advice of his managers, stay on script, and appear “presidential.” As a sign of his transformation, Trump referred to his opponent Ted Cruz as “Senator Cruz,” rather than “ ‘Lyin’ Ted Cruz,” and was applauded. The “new” Trump didn’t last twenty-four hours. Within a day, he had called Cruz “ ‘Lyin’ Ted” a dozen times and was back to his undisciplined ways.1

THE WRONG TEMPERAMENT FOR A PRESIDENT

A president’s behavior and decisions are held to a high standard, and Trump has shown no willingness to accept advice, to grow in his new role, or to internalize criticism and gain restraint. Trump may have claimed a landslide victory, but in truth, he lacks the protection of a wide popular mandate; postelection exit polls found that only 34 percent of voters believed that Trump had the right personality and temperament for the office of president.2

Last week Trump proposed bombing Mexico and it somehow wasn’t a big story

Trump’s extremist policy agenda is flying under the radar — and that’s a problem.

by Zack Beauchamp | Jul 29, 2024

https://www.vox.com/policy/363146/trump-policy-war-mexico-trade-deport
ation-border

Donald Trump went on national TV last week and proposed bombing Mexico.

Asked by Fox News’s Jesse Watters if he’d consider strikes against drug cartels operating in the country, Trump said yes — and framed his answer as a threat against the Mexican government. “Mexico’s gonna have to straighten it out really fast, or the answer is absolutely,” the former president said.

This is not a one-off answer to a stray question. Trump suggested firing missiles at Mexico during his presidency, asked advisers for a “battle plan” against the cartels last year, and recently proposed sending special operators to assassinate drug kingpins. The idea of war in Mexico is popular among the Republican elite; a Trump-aligned think tank even drew up a broad-strokes plan for how such a war might work.

There is every reason to take Trump’s proposal seriously. Presidents tend to at least try to deliver on campaign promises, and they have nearly unlimited war-making power nowadays. As unthinkable as it may sound, there is a reasonable chance the United States will be at war on its southern border in the coming years if Donald Trump returns to office.

So how come nobody is talking about it?

The Fox interview has barely gotten any pickup in other media. The prior years of Trump musings about war with Mexico have been mostly ignored. A major party candidate is proposing the first North American war in over a century and, somehow, it’s not even on the radar in Washington.

This is part of a bigger pattern. If you actually look at Trump’s policy agenda, he’s called for some wild stuff: policies so extreme that, had they been proposed prior to 2016, would have defined the entire course of the campaign. Today, a few get some coverage, but mostly feel like sideshows — with policy as a category taking a backseat to personality and polling.

Recently, the lack of policy focus is partly due to a remarkably chaotic stretch of American political life. One candidate, the incumbent president, bungled his debate performance so badly that his party replaced him with his vice president. The other almost got killed on national television by a would-be assassin.

But even in more normal times this is a general problem with the media: Policy is technical and boring, while horse-race reporting is exciting and easier for audiences to grasp.

Elements of Trump’s persona also make policy reporting a lot tougher. The combination of habitual lying, flip-flopping, and personal disinterest in detail can make it tough to know what’s an actual proposal and what’s something he said just for the hell of it.

But there are some times when it’s really clear that Trump means what he says. And in those areas where he clearly does — like trade and the southern border — a second Trump administration would have extraordinary consequences.

Trump’s biggest policies are deeply radical

Before I started writing this story, I asked my colleagues at Vox what stood out as Trump’s signature policy proposals in this election — the equivalent of “Build the Wall” in 2016. We came up with two big answers: Trump’s proposal for a general 10 percent tariff and his plan for “the largest deportation in American history.”

Each of these policies is genuinely extreme.

Joe Biden has expelled nearly 7 million illegal immigrants

By Kevin Drum | July 29, 2024

https://jabberwocking.com/41344-2/

Over the weekend, Jack Herrera had a piece in Politico that provides an interesting perspective on the Biden administration's immigration policy. It's true that illegal border crossings soared after Biden took office, but expulsions soared too, starting from his first day:
Quote:

Most Americans don’t understand how many people the Biden-Harris administration has removed from the country.... In the spring of 2021, deep in the depths of the Covid-19 pandemic, I was in a camp in Tijuana, where some migrants were so hopeful the new president would let them in that they flew “BIDEN FOR PRESIDENT” flags outside their tents. But most of them who crossed got a slap from reality: They were quickly frog-marched by U.S. Border Patrol back through the deportation doorway, back to the squalid camps in cartel turf. Others got rapidly loaded onto ICE planes and flown back to Haiti, Guatemala, El Salvador, wherever. As the number of people crossing the border grew during Biden’s first two years in office, these expulsions reached a scorching pace. ICE charter flights bounced around the globe like Taylor Swift’s jet. https://www.politico.com/news/magazine/2024/07/28/trump-biden-immigrat
ion-deportation-00167914

Naturally you want to see this in chart form. I'm here to help:

During Biden's term in office, he will have expelled, detained, or deported 6.9 million illegal immigrants. That's 73% more than Donald Trump.

This is why, despite the surge in migrants, the total population of illegal immigrants in the US has probably increased less than most people think. Out of roughly 11 million migrants (border crossers plus asylum seekers), around 7 million of them were expelled. At the same time, about 2 million illegal immigrants who are already in the country return to their homes every year. That gets us to 9 million. So net population growth has probably been on the order of 2 million or so, an increase of 18%.

That's just a guess, and it might be off on either side. Still, you might wonder why, if this is the case, Biden hasn't bragged more about it. I imagine there are two reasons. First, it's still growth of 2 million illegal immigrants compared to roughly zero during the Trump administration. Second, the Democratic base doesn't want to hear that Biden has been pretty strict about expelling illegal immigrants. It's a no-win problem.

I could make a chart of the increasing number of times per year Trumptards claim they are not Nazis because they don't know German:

Historian Timothy Ryback: "Hitler could only have dreamed" of Trump's fanatical support

Parallels between America in 2024 and Weimar Germany "astonish me," says eminent historian of the Nazi era

By Chauncey DeVega | July 30, 2024 6:00AM (EDT)

https://www.salon.com/2024/07/30/historian-timothy-ryback-hitler-could

The world has seen a version of this story before: A charismatic leader and demagogue with a God complex leads a populist-authoritarian movement and rises to power by claiming to be the savior of a people. This leader and his propagandists mine the resentment, hostility, anxiety and frustration of a disaffected population and direct it an out-group. Leaders of this new movement show themselves to be pathological, and their pathologies spread as a form of collective sociopathy that attracts like-minded followers and infects an entire nation.

The country where this happens experiences a crisis of democratic legitimacy and other profound changes in the order of things: "Normalcy" becomes malignant; the public sinks into learned helplessness and survival mode. Instead of stopping this threat to democracy and the rule of law, the legal system enables it. "Responsible” elites either do not take the danger to democracy seriously, reason that they can profit from this leader and his movement, or decide to ride it all out and position themselves for survival.

This leader and his movement increasingly encourage violence as they pressure, infiltrate, undermine and bring down existing democratic institutions, both from within and without. The leader attempts a coup but is unsuccessful on his first attempts. The existing social and political order proves to be far weaker and more malleable than the elites and mostof the public expects. Voices of dissent are systematically silenced as the aspiring dictator and his party embark on a revolutionary project aimed at remaking society to suit their twisted vision. In both versions of this story, the leader survives an assassination attempt and then uses that event to present himself as a force of destiny and crush resistance.

The American people — or at least those who are paying attention — have already grasped the parallels and understand that denial will not save them. Too many Americans, unfortunately, have not learned that lesson.

To discuss these dangerous historical parallels, I recently spoke with historian Timothy Ryback, director of the Institute for Historical Justice and Reconciliation in The Hague and the author, most recently, of "Takeover: Hitler's Final Rise to Power." His earlier books on the Third Reich include "Hitler’s First Victims," "Hitler's Private Library" and "The Last Survivor: Legacies of Dachau."

What troubles me most? The fact that Hitler and his National Socialists never received more than 37% of the national vote in a free and open election, and Trump is polling at around 50% or higher, according to some sources. These are percentages of popular support that Adolf Hitler could only have dreamed of achieving in a free and open election. I feel mild terror, knowing where political polarization and right-wing political fanaticism led Germans in the 1930s, and where right-wing extremism appears to be leading many Americans today.

There are clear and obvious parallels between the rise of the Nazis in Germany and the political crisis today in the U.S. caused by Donald Trump and the MAGA movement. Why is there so much resistance to this basic fact?

We are hardly the first to sense and dismiss potentially nascent fascism in America. The 1936 novel by Sinclair Lewis addresses this very point: "It Can’t Happen Here: What Will Happen When America Has a Dictator?”

History does not repeat itself, but it sure does rhyme.

While political contingency certainly precludes historical inevitability, it does not mean that there are not resonances, parallels and lessons to be taken from the past. Perhaps it is best to view them as warning signals. I think this is what we are seeing with the repeated comparisons between Hitler and Trump. There are, in fact, some rather disturbing rhymed couplets, if you will. Here are a few of the most striking.

Presidential elections: Hitler loses the spring 1932 presidential election by 6 million votes, then goes to court to have the results overturned amid claims of voter fraud and irregularities by state officials. Trump loses the 2020 U.S. presidential election by 7 million popular votes and 74 electoral votes (306 to 232), then goes to court amid claims voter fraud and irregularities by state officials to have the results overturned. In both instances, the cases were dismissed out of hand.

Trump’s 24-Hour Reich: Trump said he would be dictator for a day, while Hitler promised a thousand-year Reich. Whether we are talking about 24 hours or a millennium, it is as chilling a rhymed couplet of stated political intent as one could envision.

Political vengeance: Hitler vowed revenge on his political opponents, promising “heads will roll” as soon as he came to power. Remember the Night of the Long Knives? In June 2024, exactly 90 years to the month that Hitler had his key political opponents murdered, Trump vowed vengeance on his own political enemies with the phrase, “Haul out the Guillotine!”

Finally, in the run-up to the November 1932 Reichstag elections, Hitler urged his followers to rally, with the promise, “Es wird wild werden,” an almost too perfect rhyme with Trump’s call to his followers for Jan. 6, 2021, “Be there, will be wild!”

As with Hitler, as with Trump, when it comes to the poetry of politics, one should not discount the madness in the method.
