Some of the extremely presidential things Donald Trump has said recently:

• "The transgender thing is an incredible thing. Your kid goes to school and comes home a few days later with an operation."

• "Hard to believe, they have some states passing legislation where you can execute the baby after birth. It’s crazy."

• "Look at Kamala... every place she has touched has turned to shit!"

• "Over the past 4 years, Kamala and Crooked Joe Biden have presided over an economic reign of terror, committing one economic atrocity after another."

• "There will be no future under Comrade Kamala Harris, because she will take us into a Nuclear World War III!"

• "The USA is not ready for a Communist President."

• "MASSIVE SCANDAL! The Harris-Biden Administration has been caught fraudulently manipulating Job Statistics to hide the true extent of the Economic Ruin they have inflicted upon America."

• Barack Obama should be hauled in front of a military tribunal:

• Picture book: "My new Book, SAVE AMERICA, is out next week, and is already a Best Seller! I hand-selected each photo, and wrote the captions - It is a MUST HAVE for every America First Patriot."

In case you're curious, real GDP per capita increased at an annual rate of 0.84% during Donald Trump's four years in office. It has increased at an annual rate of 2.8% during the five years Gavin Newsom has been governor of California.

Just sayin'.

My experience with Trumptards is that they all

1) cheat on their taxes,

2) steal from their employers,

3) engage in highly disruptive psychological dramas at home, work and vacation

4) can't be trusted to not lie for personal gain, which circles back to 1)

5) believe in their racial superiority.

There are actually a sixth and a seventh characteristic. Very meta:

6) Deny that 1) to 5) describes themselves. (Some of the most hardcore racists will vehemently deny they are racist. It is absurd behavior, but I see it constantly from Trumptards.)

7) Falsely claim that 1) to 5) describes the Trumptard's enemies. Trumptards never care whether their accusations are true or false. They vomit lies mixed with truth to make themselves feel better.

I find it completely weird how Trumptards cannot make the connection between their difficulties at serenely prospering in America and their numerous mental glitches and their nonfunctional habits. (See their favorite hobbyhorses and addictions for how that works. See Trump with a $1 million per week legal bills because of his mental glitches and habits.)

Are you discovering late in your life that rich people will not give poor people free housing? Rich people, with vast numbers of empty bedrooms and empty vacation homes, won't offer free room and board to poor people? Discovering that rich people also don't want their government to give free room and board to poor people?

A Second Trump Term Could End the Department of Veterans Affairs

Trump’s efforts to privatize the VA could be turbocharged by a radical Supreme Court decision if he wins in November

September 1, 2024

By Michael Embrich -- a veteran and former member of the Secretary of Veterans Affairs' Advisory Committee on the Readjustment of Veterans

https://www.rollingstone.com/politics/political-commentary/trump-end-v
eterans-affairs-department-supreme-court-1235093343
/

This shift in the legal landscape also plays directly into the hands of private health care interests, which have long sought to privatize the VA and its $325 billion budget, and $222 million in mandatory spending for fiscal year 2025. The VA is specifically designed to serve those who have served our country, and address their unique needs — from combat-related injuries to mental health issues. A VA health care system that is prevented from making its own rules and regulations is useless to veterans and undermines the America’s promise to care for those who “have borne the battle.”

With backing from a second Trump administration, private health care companies will no doubt see an opportunity. They no longer need to battle organizations like the American Legion or VFW for control of the VA — they just need to convince the courts that the VA doesn’t have the legal authority to care for veterans. With thousands of rules and regulations interpreted by the VA on behalf of Congress open to challenge, the VA could be stopped in its tracks. The legal chaos following this would end the VA as we know it.

The third and final blow to the VA would come if, as the Chevron ruling suggests, the department loses its legal authority to make new rules altogether. Given the varying timelines for passing veterans’ legislation — ranging from 50 years for something as comprehensive as the PACT Act to help veterans exposed to toxic chemicals, to months for cost-of-living adjustments — Congress simply wouldn’t be able to draft bills and regulations quickly enough to keep pace with the VA’s daily demands.

The future of the Department of Veterans Affairs hangs in the balance. A second Trump term, coupled with the dismantling of Chevron deference, could cripple the VA’s ability to serve those who have sacrificed for our nation.

The agency’s capacity to interpret and implement laws is essential for meeting the unique and complex needs of veterans. Without this authority, the VA could become entangled in endless legal battles, leaving veterans caught in the crossfire of privatization efforts and regulatory paralysis.

This is not just a legal issue — it is a profound moral and ethical challenge. The VA stands as the nation’s promise to its veterans, and that promise must be upheld. The question we face is whether that promise will endure, or whether it will be sacrificed in the name of deregulation and privatization, leaving millions of veterans without the care and support they have earned.

I wonder when we're going to get any real news or when something even worth reporting on is going to happen. With the debates in question right now, who knows?

Feels like almost 2 months has gone by now and nothing notable has even happened.

...

Other than watching in real time how easily the emotions and personality of about 40% of the population can be controlled and changed remotely without barely even having to lift a finger.

But if you've been paying attention at all in life that's not exactly noteworthy news either because you already knew this was the case.

Trump Is Making New, Sketchy Foreign Business Deals

From Saudi Arabia to Serbia, despots are cozying up, likely in preparation for a second term.

By Casey Michel | Sept 1, 2024

https://nymag.com/intelligencer/article/trump-is-making-new-sketchy-fo
reign-business-deals.html

When Donald Trump launched his first presidential campaign nearly a decade ago, there was a deluge of concerns about his foreign financial entanglements. And rightfully so. Given the financial overlap between Trump, his family, his company, and a constellation of kleptocratic regimes, especially Russia, Trump presented an unprecedented opportunity for foreign regimes to directly access the White House and tilt American policy in the process.

Now, with Trump running for the presidency once more, those concerns have hardly disappeared. If anything, foreign governments — including brand-new regimes that weren’t involved in Trump’s first whirlwind in the White House — have only spied new opportunities to burrow into his pockets and into a second administration.

Many of these networks are already known, if forgotten. Trump’s financial links with regimes in places like China, Kazakhstan, or Indonesia were already reported in detail during his presidency. Even after Trump left the Oval Office, the revelations about his subterranean financial links as president with foreign regimes continued spilling out; it was only this year, for instance, that congressional investigators revealed that the first two years of Trump’s presidency included countries as far afield as Qatar, Kuwait, Turkey, and many more patronizing Trump businesses. Any of these details on their own would be exceptional — can you imagine how much any other presidential candidate’s secret Chinese bank account would dominate a news cycle? — but they’ve been subsumed in the broader morass of Trump’s scandals. They’ve become, to an almost shocking degree, normalized.

Look at Saudi Arabia. Years after Saudi tyrant Mohammed bin Salman (MBS) ordered the grisly killing of journalist Jamal Khashoggi, the Saudi government has used an entire fleet of PR professionals and consultancy firms to launder its image, transforming the regime from a bastion of backwardness into one of progress and reform. (Saudi Arabia under MBS “almost feels like a start-up,” WeWork founder Adam Neumann purred last year at a Saudi-sponsored conference.) And part of that influence campaign has directly targeted — and directly used — Trump. Just last month, the New York Times revealed that the Trump Organization had inked a brand-new deal in the country, centered on Trump branding a new high-rise in Jeddah. The branding deal mirrors similar arrangements Trump has signed with foreign partners elsewhere, lending his name to developments in Azerbaijan and Panama. It’s unclear how much the new Saudi deal is worth, but as the Times noted, “Saudi Arabia has become one of the few reliable sources of growth for the Trump family’s business operations.”

Yet the deepening links between Trump and Riyadh don’t revolve only around a single, luxe new high-rise. Time and again in recent years, Saudi and its proxies have bankrolled Trump and his inner circle — and even expanded the network of authoritarian allies succoring Trump. For instance, a Saudi construction company recently helped Trump sign a separate deal in the dictatorship in Oman, where migrant laborers are currently building out yet another luxury building, including a hotel and golf course. We know a few more details on this new arrangement, such as the fact that the Trump Organization has already banked at least $5 million from the deal. As the organization itself revealed, the total compound will have a “combined value of $200 million” — and will, naturally, “represent an unprecedented level of luxury,” which is why sales agents are “targeting superrich buyers from around the world, including from Russia, Iran and India,” per the Times.

Again, any one of these deals would be a breathtaking breach of previous norms for a president. But the new links between Saudi and Trump go even deeper, stretching into Saudi Arabia’s latest foray into foreign investments: golf. Throwing billions of dollars into professional golf — all as a way of transforming Riyadh into a destination of global sports — Saudi backed the recent creation of LIV Golf, the rising competitor to PGA Golf. One of the kingdom’s key partners in the new league? Trump, naturally. In early 2024, Riyadh tapped Trump to host LIV Golf tournaments at his own courses — making it “another major source of new revenue for the Trump family.”

Indeed, calling all of these Saudi arrangements a major inflow for the Trump brood is an understatement. In one of the most sordid — or swampiest — arrangements seen since Trump departed the White House, Trump’s underqualified, underexperienced son-in-law, Jared Kushner, managed to land a $2 billion investment from the Saudis for his brand-new investment firm. Even Saudi officials were at first spooked by the deal, shying away from Kushner’s initial proposal. But as the Intercept reported, after officials recommended against the investment, MBS himself stepped in to approve the deal, keen to sink Saudi Arabia’s financial claws into Trump’s family that much further.

If anything, it’s Kushner who’s taken the lead on threading nascent links between the world of Trump and new strongmen suitors. In addition to his Saudi lucre, Kushner has recently been gallivanting around the Balkans, where he signed a new agreement earlier this year with the authoritarian regime in Serbia to land a luxury-hotel lease. The arrangement builds on years of Trump World cozying up with Serbia’s budding autocrat, Aleksandar Vucic; not only did Trump welcome lobbyists for Bosnia’s pro-Serbian separatists into his administration, but Trump’s former acting director of national intelligence, Ric Grenell, has become tight with Vucic, with the Serbian leader recently awarding Grenell with what the latter referred to as Serbia’s “highest honor.”

These are just the deals that we know about; given the financial opacity of everything from the American real-estate industry to things like the investment funds Kushner oversees — areas that Biden’s Treasury Department is specifically targeting for increased transparency, thankfully — it’s entirely possible that there’s a world of additional investments, purchases, and arrangements that we still don’t know about and that we’ll only learn about in years to come. This is, of course, an issue that is far broader than Trump or his inner circle — but given that Trump is a coin flip from the presidency, his sudden proximity to power is that much more reason a whole range of long-overdue counter-kleptocracy reforms must finally be passed by Congress.

If you need any more proof, just look at what we learned earlier this month. A bombshell exposé in the Washington Post revealed that the military dictatorship in Egypt may have secretly funneled some $10 million into Trump’s flagging 2016 campaign, without the American public having any idea. The Post’s details had all the makings for a scandal of historic proportions: The Egyptian security services suddenly pulling $10 million in cash from an Egyptian bank; classified intel indicating that Egypt’s ruling despot wanted to funnel $10 million to Trump; Trump himself announcing a surprise injection of $10 million into his campaign, tapping what he claimed was his own money. There was so much smoke you could choke on it. (All of this came alongside Egypt’s successful campaign to flip Senator Bob Menendez into its own foreign agent, a case you can read about in my new book, Foreign Agents.)

And yet, after Trump became president, his administration eventually dropped the investigation into the Egypt-to-Trump pipeline wholesale — and Americans never learned where that Egyptian money may have ended up, or what effect that might have had on Trump’s policies. Americans are still, to this day, in the dark about the links between Trump and Egypt.

That’s just one investigation, and one financial link, among dozens and dozens more, some of which we still know next to nothing about. But if past is precedent, that may simply be a taste of what’s to come — and what is at stake, for both dictators and democracy alike.

Trump Is Making New, Sketchy Foreign Business Deals

Against the "price gouging" theory of inflation

Demand-pull inflation by another name

By Matthew Yglesias | Sept 2, 2024

https://www.slowboring.com/p/against-the-price-gouging-theory

My point in the greedflation piece was twofold:

• Greed is a constant in the economy, not a variable, and it doesn’t explain why inflation was so much higher in 2022 than in 2019.

• Price controls and rationing are a reasonable response to certain kinds of supply disruptions associated with war or natural disaster, but if you use them to address run-of-the-mill excess of demand you end up with shortages.

Sirota’s new piece completely ignores the text of what I actually wrote, and instead goes to town on the idea that a large share of the increase in prices is accounted for by an increase in profits. This supposedly proves that I am part of a cabal of media liars whose “inflation myth crushed the working class.”

This is nonsense.

The whole point is that overstimulating the economy generates price increases and windfall profits, which is why ideally you wouldn’t overstimulate the economy.

The past couple of years of high inflation have been tough. But inflation is falling and I don’t think the bad inflation of the past will have any serious long-term consequences for the American economy. That’s in contrast to high unemployment, which causes a lot of long-term scarring. The super-rapid jobs recovery is a very important policy achievement, and inflation has been an unfortunate downside of that achievement. But it’s very easy to understand in conceptual terms, and it fits perfectly with the observation that profit margins have risen.

We just need to admit what happened here — the architects of ARP deliberately erred on the side of going too big with stimulus and we’re now living with both the upsides and the downsides of that choice. I think the upsides far outweigh the downsides:

• Prime-age employment is at the highest level of the 21st century.
• Wages are growing fastest at the bottom of the distribution.
• Black unemployment is at the lowest level on record.
• Women’s employment rate is at the highest level on record.

This is not to deny that inflation is bad, but the long-term benefits of a strong labor market are considerable and inflation is a surmountable problem. I believe the choice to go bold on full recovery as soon as possible will work out well in the end. But to make it work out well, we need to make smart, ongoing choices that reflect a cogent understanding of the current situation, which means acknowledging that price increases have been driven by strong demand, and the alternative of rationing would make things worse.

Trump Says He Had 'Every Right' to Interfere With Presidential Election

By Gabe Whisnant | Sep 02, 2024 at 7:48 AM EDT

al-election-1947342

Former federal prosecutor Joyce Vance wrote on X, "There's no right to 'interfere' with a presidential election," she said. "This is the banality of evil right here — Trump asserting he can override the will of the voters to claim victory in an election he lost. And, he will do it again. We must vote against him in overwhelming numbers."

Legal analyst Katie Phang reposted a clip of Trump's Fox News interview on X and wrote, "Criming and then confessing to the criming. That's a Trump specialty."

During the past few, rocky years my feelings about the newspaper I grew up reading as a kid — the paper that influenced me more than any other to become a newspaperman — in the New Jersey suburbs have evolved from surprise, to shock, to disappointment, to anger, to rage, to complete revulsion ...

Aside from platforming maniacal, caustic headlines topping spurious content like the one above (which I promise to get to in a minute), this newspaper’s inability to spot the biggest news story of our lifetimes, and treat it with the heft it deserves, is journalistic malpractice, and a very real danger to our country.

The Times isn’t alone in its mishandling and disregard of the continuing attack on our country and its institutions that back it up. In fact, I can’t point to ONE so-called reputable news source in our “mainstream” media that has appropriately sounded the alarms, and given this perpetually breaking news story the treatment it demands.

There is not a single day that toddles by, when I don’t sit at my cluttered desk as the retired newspaperman I ultimately became, and stare at my keyboard wondering just what in the hell is being discussed in the newsrooms of our most foremost “news” operations in this nation.

Why have they abandoned us, and the most important story in the world?

Our country has been under steady attack for nearly four years now. Why aren’t our newsrooms on wartime footing? Bare minimum, why haven’t Democracy Desks been set up in these broken newsrooms staffed with journalists who do nothing but monitor the Republicans’ movements as they ruthlessly defend an attack on America, and go about annihilating truth, justice, and our right to even vote?

What news could possibly override monitoring the dangerous maneuvers of a sociopath, who is still free and on the loose after unleashing his rabid attack dogs to besiege our Capitol, stomp on law enforcement officials, seek out political leaders for harm and hanging, and prevent the certification of our vote, while doing nothing for three hours except root for the attack’s success?

Backed by his morally busted political party, the son of a bitch means to finish us off whether or not he ever gets power again. He is the literal definition of a terrorist and/or an authoritarian strongman — a thug. He bows to murderous fascists like Putin, and openly revels in their success.

There’s not a single thing I have typed here that isn’t completely true. So what in the hell is going on with our addled media, and their disgusting refusal to do their jobs?

Why just the other day, this pathetic man outdid even himself when he illegally barged into Arlington National Cemetery for a photo op. He once again disgraced our fallen, who he has called “suckers” and “losers” to get his wrinkled, orange mug in front of a camera.

My God. Now let’s pretend what would happen if Joe Biden or Kamala Harris did something like that …

It has been more than 160 years since a threat like this presented itself in the United States of America, and we know how that turned out. Hundreds of thousands dead and wounded, an assassinated president, cities in ruin, and the very real chance that America would not be able to rebuild itself again.

She did, but all these decades later, still walks with a limp from that horrific period in her life.

We are but 69 days from repeating all this, though it could be even worse this time, because if the enemies of our Democracy win this election they will have successfully breached our Capitol, and will be setting up headquarters in our White House.

The repugnant Confederacy, thank God, never made it that far last time.

So I ask again: Just what in the hell is being discussed in all these newsrooms while Trump bangs the drums of hate, follows the roadmap created for him in Project 2025, and backstopped by a radical, bought-off Supreme Court, bolstered by known election-deniers, promises retribution to anybody who dares get in his way?

Since that terrible attack on our Democracy began four years ago, our broken media has given us almost nothing but normalization and capitulation.

How else to explain this headline and the story it trumpeted written by one of the NYT’s leaders in its editorial department, Deputy Opinion Editor Patrick Healy:

Opinion
Harris Has the Momentum. But Trump Has the Edge on What Matters Most.
Aug. 26, 2024

What matters most? You mean, the safety and well-being of our country and its citizens from those who would attack it?

Of course it didn’t mean that ...

That headline and the one I lead this piece with above topping an offensive, ridiculous slice of gaslighting by the ultra-Conservative Rich Lowry of the National Review, were splashed across the pages of The New York Times on Monday.

And let’s get this out of the way quickly: Yes, I understand that they were produced by the editorial department of this dumpster fire of a news source, but if that makes you feel any better about things, then they have you right where they want you: accepting that running this kind of propagandist bilge is acceptable.

It’s not.

It’s not from any news source that wants us to take them seriously, and displays the credibility that any reputable news organization must possess to serve its readership adequately.

My only plausible guess for the mainstream media’s failure to cover the attack on our country, besides sheer and incomprehensible incompetence, is that they are hedging their bets. Trump has been undeniably good for their bottom lines, which looks to me to be the only damn thing they truly care about.

If Trump goes away, so does the money. And what of the millions of dollars of tax cuts he’s promising to once again give the owners of these pompous rags?

Otherwise, there’s no making sense of any of this.

Regular readers will know that this is not the first time I have written about our media’s catastrophic failure to protect and inform us. And fair warning: Unless things radically change with the way our mainstream media comport themselves in the coming days, it won’t be the last.

I take these threats to our country and our media institutions very seriously, and I have learned many of you do, too. You (we) are owed a damn explanation for the greatest failure by our media in the 248-year history of our country.

We are furious about it, we have a right to be, and we deserve some damn answers PRONTO.

D. Earl Stephens @EarlOfEnough

• I have been alive long enough to see presidents shot dead in the street; civil rights leaders gunned down in their hotel rooms; horrible, horrible wars started on the wretched basis of disgusting lies ... but of all the things I have seen in my long life nothing compares to January 6, 2021.

• On that day ... a terrible, singular day that will live in our broken hearts forever, an evil, broken sociopath who had been voted out of power by the citizens of the United States of America did everything he could to hold onto that power and set the match that led to a gruesome attack on his own country.

• And when that attack was at full boil, he watched and did nothing to stop it for three hours except hope that it would prevail.

• Even his ghastly family was begging him to call off his rabid dogs, while brave, overmatched police officers were stomped into the pavement and beaten with flags -- FLAGS!

• Members of Congress -- Republicans and Democrats -- ran for their lives.

• Finally, when somebody or something was able to penetrate the sociopath's thick, fat skull, he grudgingly called a halt to the attack, but not before telling his army of pathetic, anti-America losers that he loved them.

• He f*cking told him that HE LOVED THEM!!!!

• I am seething as I type this. Raging ...

• Why ... WHY is this man still free? Why hasn't he been jailed forever? WHY must WE continue to deal with this monster, who most certainly will try this again?

• My God, LOCK-HIM-UP already.

Politicians step up attacks on the teaching of scientific theories in US schools

By Ryan Summers | August 21, 2024 8:12am EDT

https://theconversation.com/politicians-step-up-attacks-on-the-teachin
g-of-scientific-theories-in-us-schools-235083

Scientific theory has had a rough time in America’s public schools.

Almost 100 years ago, science teacher John Scopes was convicted of violating a Tennessee law that prohibited teaching the theory of evolution. Although his conviction was overturned on a technicality in 1927, laws banning classes on Darwin’s theory stuck around for another 40 years. They were ruled unconstitutional by the U.S. Supreme Court in 1968.

Over the past few decades, conservative or religious groups that object to including the theory of evolution in science classes have tried a different approach. Now, they argue, if the “scientific” theory of evolution is taught, other views, such as “intelligent design” – a stand-in for creationism – should also be taught.

Broadening efforts

The approach is not limited to evolution. Legislatures across the country are proposing or passing laws that purport to encourage scientific discussion, but instead encourage students to treat established, scientific theories as equivalent to ideas that lack scientific study.

The former president claimed in a Fox News interview that he had “every right” to overturn the 2020 election. The question now is: can that public statement be used against him at trial? The answer is yes.

https://www.msnbc.com/opinion/msnbc-opinion/trump-election-interferenc
e-2020-fox-news-jack-smith-rcna169307

Trump is forever trying his cases in the court of public opinion, where there are no rules of evidence, no rules of procedure and no rules of law. What he apparently doesn’t realize is that every word out of his mouth is admissible in a criminal trial.

This is where the rules of evidence come into play — and where they will work to Trump’s extreme disadvantage at trial. The rules provide that prosecutors can introduce any statement a defendant makes against that defendant at trial. Such a “statement of a party opponent” is not subject to the hearsay rule, which limits out-of-court statements from being admitted at trial. For example, Trump said during a CNN town hall last year that he took classified documents to his Mar-a-Lago residence when he left the White House. Should Smith’s case concerning those documents finally go to trial, prosecutors can introduce that statement to the jury to prove that Trump in fact knowingly took those documents.

However, the defense team does not have the same latitude to use Trump’s words at trial. In that same CNN town hall, Trump claimed that he had the “absolute right” to take those documents under the Presidential Records Act. Trump’s lawyers are prohibited from introducing those out-of-court statements to prove that Trump had that right (which, of course, is a lie, as the Presidential Records Act gives him no such right).

To fight wokeness, vote Harris

The left's worst ideas flourish under Trump

By Jeff Maurer | Sep 04, 2024

Trump wants the election to be about wokeness. He rails about wokeness constantly — it’s in his speeches even more than Hannibal Lecter, feckless whinging about the Biden-Harris switch, or the age-old question: “Would you rather be eaten by a shark or electrocuted by a boat?” Fox News covers wokeness more than the Golf Channel covers golf, and there are endless social media accounts dedicated to finding the wokest freak in America and making him a star. The message from the right is clear: To stop wokeness, vote Trump.

Trump is the far left’s worst nightmare and dream come true at the same time. He’s everything they hate: A racist, misogynist, uber-capitalist authoritarian. But’s he’s also great for the far left because he validates their “America is bad” narrative. After all: what does electing Trump say about America? I have to admit that it doesn’t say anything good! You can see how this puts people like me in a bind; I don’t think that America is hopelessly racist and sexist, but…we did elect that obviously-racist-and-sexist guy. Once Trump took office, arguing that America isn’t racist and awful felt like arguing that O.J. Simpson was great at anger management: You knew that at some point in the conversation, you were going to find yourself saying “Okay, sure — but other than that…”

What happened with the immunity case was you had six judges, three of whom were appointed by Trump, who were quick to say that the president is not above the law, but also he is above the law. Here’s where the makeshift position of Chief Justice John Roberts comes into play, because he said there’s a distinction between official acts and private acts.

For private acts, the court concluded that the president is not above the law. So I assume if the president had an affair with a woman and her jealous husband came to the White House and the president shot the husband in the Oval Office—that’s a private act, and he would not be above the law. But if he ordered Navy SEALs to do it, then it would be an official act and he would be above the law because that’s a presidential act.

So this decision is outrageous. It’ll be overruled by some future court, God willing. It’s a case that really gives the president a free pass.

Donald Trump’s campaign is intentionally visiting “sundown towns” which violated federal law to be “whites only.”

The term "sundown towns" dates back to the segregation era, referring to communities with a wholly white population where Black people were considered unsafe after nightfall. Black people were prevented from living in those communities through discriminatory policies or intimidation and violence. Today, many of these communities with racist histories remain predominantly white.

An X user wrote in response that Vice President Kamala Harris, the Democratic nominee, is "doing a Freedom Bus Tour with 50 stops focusing on reproductive freedom" while Trump "is going to sundown towns to rally the white supremacist vote."

They added: "See the difference? Kamala looks to the future and restoring rights. Trump looks to the past and Jim Crow."

Reagan –> Trump

September 4, 2024

https://andrewtobias.com/reagan-trump/

Apparently, Deadpool and Reagan were the big Labor Day weekend movies.

Andy Borowitz refers to both as he asks, Who Created Trump?

The new film “Reagan” tells the heroic story of how our 40th president transformed America into a shining city upon a hill and single-handedly slayed the Evil Empire of the Soviet Union.

For a more historically accurate moviegoing experience, I recommend “Deadpool & Wolverine.”

Let’s get real about Ronnie.

. . .

According to Reagan, the greatest environmental hazard wasn’t man-made: “Eighty percent of air pollution comes not from chimneys and auto exhaust pipes, but from plants and trees.” When he shared his theory about these toxic emissions during the 1980 presidential campaign, students at California’s Claremont College affixed this sign to a tree: “Chop Me Down Before I Kill Again.”

Does his anti-tree stance sound familiar? It should.

When Trump’s hand-picked candidate Herschel Walker ran for U.S. Senate in 2022, he slammed Democrats’ climate measures, alleging, “They continue to try to fool you like they are helping you out. But they’re not. They’re not helping you out because a lot of money, it’s going to trees. Don’t we have enough trees around here?” Walker’s comments were widely derided as cretinous, but I have another word for them: Reaganesque. “A tree’s a tree,” Reagan told a logging group in 1966. “How many do you need to look at?”

. . .

Ronnie’s contention that trees cause pollution, much like Trump’s that windmills cause cancer, might be charitably described as an alternative fact. Reagan’s most legendary deployment of alternative facts, however, came during the 1976 campaign, in his broadsides against a character who became famous as the “welfare queen.” Much like Trump’s inflammatory narratives about rapists and murderers swarming across the southern border, Reagan’s stories about the queen blended fabulism and racism.

“There’s a woman in Chicago,” he told his reliably white audiences. “She has 80 names, 30 addresses, 12 Social Security cards, and is collecting veterans’ benefits on four deceased husbands… And she’s collecting Social Security on her cards. She’s got Medicaid, getting food stamps, and she is collecting welfare under each of her names. Her tax-free cash income alone is over $150,000.” (Perhaps fearing that his story lacked sufficient punch, he later upgraded the number of her aliases from 80 to 127.)

. . .

Reagan never explicitly said that the welfare queen was Black, but he didn’t have to. By referring to a welfare cheat in Chicago, a city with a large African American population, he was sending a message his white audience would have no trouble decoding. (Never mind that the vast majority of welfare recipients were, and still are, white.)

Unsurprisingly, Reagan’s tales of the welfare queen didn’t stand up to fact-checking. As the New York Times reported on February 15, 1976, the woman Reagan demonized “is now charged with using not 80 aliases but four. The amount the state is charging that she received from her alleged fraud is not $150,000 but $3,000.”

. . .

Those who argue that the economic hardship suffered by people of color under Reagan’s presidency was just a nutty coincidence rather than the inevitable result of racist policies should turn their attention to a 1971 phone conversation between him and then President Richard Nixon, who, always so helpful to historians, taped just about everything.

After the United Nations voted to recognize the People’s Republic of China, on October 25, 1971, members of the Tanzanian delegation danced in celebration. The confluence of a communist state attaining prestige and Africans being happy was too much for Reagan, who, in a rage, rang up Nixon. “Last night, I tell you, to watch that thing on television as I did,” Reagan said. “To see those, those monkeys from those African countries—damn them, they’re still uncomfortable wearing shoes!” Ever the performer, the Gipper knew his audience; Nixon can be heard laughing uproariously.

Let’s close our discussion of Reagan and Trump with one very specific parallel: their predilection for scheduling campaign rallies at locations stained by racial violence.

In 2020, Trump planned an appearance for Juneteenth, the annual commemoration of the emancipation of slaves in the U.S. The place? Tulsa, Oklahoma, which in 1921 was the site of the race massacre that killed as many as 300 Black people. (After the rally’s announcement sparked an uproar, Trump moved the event one day later, and then had the audacity to claim, “I did something good: I made Juneteenth very famous.”)

Forty years earlier, Reagan kicked off his general election campaign in a similarly notorious locale: near Philadelphia, Mississippi, the site of the Mississippi Burning murders of the civil rights activists James Chaney, Andrew Goodman, and Michael Schwerner. As in his welfare queen tirades, he made sure his speech at the Neshoba County Fair, to an all-white audience waving the Confederate flags later favored by the January 6 rioters, included a time-tested racist dog whistle: “I believe in states’ rights.” Reagan’s triumphant march to Election Day had begun, with badges trumpeting his campaign slogan: “Let’s Make America Great Again.”

The Fundamentals Of Trumpism Started Long Before Trump

Our politics is the logical outcome of four decades of Republicanism that will remain vigorously in play after Trump is gone.

The rise of Trumpism is not an aberration, but is the logical outcome of four decades of Republican politics that will remain vigorously in play. The GOP is wedded to a policy agenda that is wildly unpopular. Long before the rise of Trump, Republicans made peace with the flotsam of American apartheid and with politicized splinter Protestantism. It adopted as gospel the crackpot nostrums of supply-side economics, which don't work and never will. (When candidate George H.W. Bush called it "voodoo economics," it was the truest thing ever said in a political context by any member of his family.) There is no sign from the current Republicans that they are prepared to change course on any part of this agenda, and there certainly is no Republican of any influence that seems willing or able to force that serious a change.

Why do you think I don't have to work, dummy?

How many people do you know that had a house paid for with cash when they were 32 years old? One they paid for themselves without any help from their parents or anybody else?

Immigration déjà vu

The idea that deportation helps US citizens has always been an illusion. It’s never worked before and it wouldn’t work under a second Trump term.

By Michael Ettlinger | September 3, 2024, 10:57 a.m.

https://www.bostonglobe.com/2024/09/03/opinion/trump-deportation-polic
y-economy
/

Trump is promising mass deportations if he’s elected. He claims this will create jobs and economic growth. We’ve been here before.

What would happen if 22 percent of America’s farmworkers vanished from the workforce? Would workers from across the country flock to the cotton fields of Texas, the sugar fields of Florida, and the peanut farms of Georgia to take low-paying jobs in the blazing heat? Or would production drop; would other workers in agribusiness lose their jobs and take pay cuts as their industry declined; would prices for consumers go up and imports increase?

What would happen if 15 percent of construction workers disappeared? Would a million American workers drop everything to pour concrete and climb scaffolds to swing hammers? Or would construction decline, companies downsize, and the cost of housing go up?

What would happen if 8 percent of service workers left, including child-care providers? Are there others waiting in the wings to provide affordable child care for working parents? Or would parents have to quit their jobs to care for their children?

We know what will happen because it happened before.

“In the 1930s, state and local governments deported 400,000 to 500,000 people of Mexican descent, promising to create jobs for Americans during the Great Depression. What actually happened? The employment of native-born Americans dropped — and their unemployment went up. American workers ended up with worse jobs and, if anything, their wages were lower. The US workers who were hurt most were the ones whose jobs had to be cut because the businesses they worked for had to downsize because of the loss of their immigrant workforce.

“Jump to 1964, when the “Bracero Exclusion” removed almost a half million Mexican farmworkers with the promise that this would improve the employment and wages of American farmworkers. Didn’t work. Instead of hiring non-immigrants, employers changed how they farmed to use fewer workers and cut back on production, making room for more imports.

“Moving to 2008 — the Secure Communities program was a police-based enforcement program that deported 454,000 people from 2008 to 2015. It did native-born US workers no favors. It resulted in a half-percent drop in their employment and a 0.6 percent fall in their hourly wages. Citizens up and down the jobs scale — from low-skilled to high-skilled — were hurt. That’s from deporting just 5 percent of our unauthorized immigrants. Mass deportation would be much worse.”

Look, Trump doesn’t care about working class employment or the economy. He’s happy to dupe the rubes by hating on the swarthy immigrants. It’s not economics, it’s xenophobia.

Signym, you again show you know nothing about economics. And because you're an idiot I will explain that what I've posted below shows Trumps doom.

More than 1 million voters have registered this cycle through Vote.org, the nonpartisan voter engagement organization announced Wednesday.

About 17 percent of the new voters come from the top seven swing states, where the 2020 presidential race was decided by razor-thin margins. Vice President Harris and former President Trump now look headed toward a tight race this November, and a surge of new voters could make all the difference in key states.

Vote.org has notably registered more than 376,000 voters in the weeks since President Biden withdrew from the presidential race in late July, when Harris launched her fast-tracked campaign.

More than 40,000 voters have so far been registered in Georgia, and roughly 37,000 were registered in Pennsylvania, two critical states where polling averages from The Hill/Decision Desk HQ show Harris and Trump separated by less than 1 percentage point.
Tens of thousands more have been registered in Arizona, Michigan, North Carolina, Wisconsin and Nevada — all toss-up states that could decide the presidential race. Several of the battlegrounds also boast marquee races for the House and Senate as both parties fight for control of Congress.

Young voters younger than 35 also made up a record-breaking 79 percent of the influx, according to Vote.org, which boasts an 81 percent rate of converting registrations into votes.
