Signym, you again show you know nothing about economics. And because you're an idiot I will explain that what I've posted below shows Trumps doom.

T

More than 1 million voters have registered this cycle through Vote.org, the nonpartisan voter engagement organization announced Wednesday.

About 17 percent of the new voters come from the top seven swing states, where the 2020 presidential race was decided by razor-thin margins. Vice President Harris and former President Trump now look headed toward a tight race this November, and a surge of new voters could make all the difference in key states.

Vote.org has notably registered more than 376,000 voters in the weeks since President Biden withdrew from the presidential race in late July, when Harris launched her fast-tracked campaign.

More than 40,000 voters have so far been registered in Georgia, and roughly 37,000 were registered in Pennsylvania, two critical states where polling averages from The Hill/Decision Desk HQ show Harris and Trump separated by less than 1 percentage point.

Tens of thousands more have been registered in Arizona, Michigan, North Carolina, Wisconsin and Nevada — all toss-up states that could decide the presidential race. Several of the battlegrounds also boast marquee races for the House and Senate as both parties fight for control of Congress.

Young voters younger than 35 also made up a record-breaking 79 percent of the influx, according to Vote.org, which boasts an 81 percent rate of converting registrations into votes.

Ya know what signym? You are promoting Trump and MAGA. So, they believe women should shut up. They believe you are little more than baby making machines who have no other purpose but to look after those babies once they are born.
Your husband beats you, so be it. Suck it up.

And you, you're working overtime to get these misogynist bastards into office. Just so they can return to treating women as second-class citizens. How fucking stupid are you?

Fact check: Post detailing 9 things women couldn't do before 1971 is mostly right

Get a credit card in her own name.
Be guaranteed that they would not get fired for getting pregnant.
Serve on a jury.

Signym, are you aware that you are full of shit? Uniformly, Trumptards are unaware of the solid connection between their malfunctioning minds and their life's miseries. Keep being obtuse, Signym, and end up dead from your stupidity. Moving on to the Republican crooks on the Supreme Court who take bribes in exchange for writing favorable opinions for the bribers:

Republicans Working Against Supreme Court Reform

By Andy Kroll and Nick Surgey | Sept. 4, 5 a.m. EDT

https://www.propublica.org/article/ginni-thomas-email-scotus-ethics-re
form-first-liberty-institute

Ginni Thomas, the wife of Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas, privately heaped praise on a major religious-rights group for fighting efforts to reform the nation’s highest court — efforts sparked, in large part, by her husband’s ethical lapses.

Thomas expressed her appreciation in an email sent to Kelly Shackelford, an influential litigator whose clients have won cases at the Supreme Court. Shackelford runs the First Liberty Institute, a $25 million-a-year organization that describes itself as “the largest legal organization in the nation dedicated exclusively to defending religious liberty for all Americans.”

Shackelford read Thomas’ email aloud on a July 31 private call with his group’s top donors.

Thomas wrote that First Liberty’s opposition to court-reform proposals gave a boost to certain judges. According to Shackelford, Thomas wrote in all caps: “YOU GUYS HAVE FILLED THE SAILS OF MANY JUDGES. CAN I JUST TELL YOU, THANK YOU SO, SO, SO MUCH.”

Shackelford said he saw Thomas’ support as evidence that judges, who “can’t go out into the political sphere and fight,” were thankful for First Liberty’s work to block Supreme Court reform. “It’s neat that, you know, those of you on the call are a part of protecting the future of our court, and they really appreciate it,” he said.

Recording of a July 31 call between First Liberty Institute leadership and donors to the organization Credit: Obtained by ProPublica and Documented

On the same call, Shackelford attacked Justice Elena Kagan as “treasonous” and “disloyal” after she endorsed an enforcement mechanism for the court’s newly adopted ethics code in a recent public appearance. He said that such an ethics code would “destroy the independence of the judiciary.” (This past weekend, Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson said she too was open to an enforceable ethics code for the Supreme Court.)

A history of xenophobia in America

By Joel Eissenberg | September 5, 2024 8:56 am

https://angrybearblog.com/2024/09/a-history-of-xenophobia-in-america

I just finished reading “America for Americans: A history of xenophobia in the United States” by Erika Lee. It is an unsparing analysis of the way xenophobia is woven into the fabric of American law and culture.

When you read “America for Americans,” does it conjure an image of native Americans asserting their rights to the lands that were over-run by western Europeans? Of course not. The people who use that expression are overwhelmingly whites of western European descent. The folks who were here before them don’t count. Likewise, the slogan “America for Americans” wasn’t intended to include the involuntary immigrants from Africa, whose residence here antedates the ancestors of many American xenophobes today.

That’s just the beginning.

For all the right-wing bleating about “open borders,” the US had open borders until the late 19th century, when Chinese immigrants were legally excluded. Lee points out that anti-Asian xenophobia was by no means restricted to the US.

Initially, American xenophobia focused on German immigrants. With time, Germans—at least Protestant Germans—became honorary white people. Italian, Irish and East European/Russian Jews each were targets of American xenophobia. Each group was tarred with the same brush: they were dirty, illiterate, poor, insular and prone to crime and prostitution. The anti-Catholicism of the Know-Nothing movement embodies another xenophobic charge—Immigrants were ultimately loyal to their home country (or for Roman Catholics, to the Pope in Rome) and could not be assimilated as patriotic Americans.

The patriotism issue came into full flower after the attack on Pearl Harbor, when tens of thousands of American citizens of Japanese descent were rounded up and put in concentration camps, while their homes and stores were taken without compensation. This was ultimately approved by the Supreme Court on grounds of military necessity. One thing I learned from this book is that many people of Japanese descent living in Peru were involuntarily deported to the US and taking to concentration camps, to be kept as hostages to exchange with Japan for American soldiers.

Xenophobia towards Muslims has long been active in the US, but hit a fevered pitch after the 9/11 attacks. When Donald Trump gained the White House, he tried to force through a total ban on immigration from Muslim-majority countries. On the third try, a partial ban succeeded. Meanwhile, xenophobic violence towards Muslims in America skyrocketed, as an equivalency between being Muslim and terrorism took hold in the popular imagination.

The writing in this book is detailed and scholarly while remaining lucid and engaging. I have a minor quibble: Lee lumps in Iran with Arab nations, but while Iran is majority Muslim, it is not an Arab nation. I’d definitely recommend this as a solid historical survey of xenophobia in the US.

My personal reaction to this book is that xenophobia is a reflection of tribalism. Tribalism is hard-wired in our species, both the affinity and loyalty to tribe members and the suspicion and fear of outsiders. It is certainly not a uniquely American phenomenon: the Crusades of the Middle Ages, the pogroms in Europe and Russia, the Holocaust of World War II and the persecution of the Uyghurs in present-day China are just a few examples.

Andrew Young said you should never trust anyone who says they’re not racist. You should say “I’m working on my racism.” The task can’t be to extirpate or deny American xenophobia, but to tame it through laws that afford legal protection to immigrants and curb violent behavior against them. The closer we can come to the ideal of the Declaration of Independence—that all people are created equal and endowed with the inalienable rights to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness, the better our nation will be.

By Angry Bear | September 5, 2024 7:30 am

Biden’s next-term plans included higher taxes on the ultra-wealthy, beginning to roll back some of damage from decades of tax cuts for those ultra-wealthy which have turned this country into an oligarchy dominated by billionaire kleptocrats. To prevent this, the oligarchs, using the mass media they (indirectly) own plus some Democratic politicians they have corrupted via campaign contributions, set out to hound Biden out of the race, seizing upon a sickly debate performance to smear him as cognitively impaired (which he isn’t, though Trump is). The media, at least, hoped for an exciting messy divisive fight over the nomination, but Democrats thwarted them by quickly rallying around Harris and staying unified. The oligarchs are now pressing Harris to abandon Biden’s plan to raise their taxes. This may seem like just one issue among many, but it is not. The oligarchs have already demonstrated their excessive power by forcing a sitting president to abandon his run for re-election. If Harris bows down to them on the very issue which led them to bare their fangs, it will show that no American leader can stand against them, and that the parasite class now has unchallenged control over US tax policy.

We need to watch Harris carefully to see if she stands firm on this. In the meantime, on another ongoing sickness of American democracy, things are looking hopeful — at least on the Democratic side.

The GOP is making false claims about noncitizens voting

August 30, 2024, 5:00 AM ET

The baseless claim that Democrats will attempt to steal the upcoming election by encouraging recently arrived migrants to vote illegally has become a key talking point for former President Donald Trump and his allies this campaign season.

That narrative sowing doubt about the validity of the U.S. electoral system is likely to be invoked by Trump and his supporters as a basis for denying election results should he lose.

It has long been illegal for noncitizens to vote in federal elections and there is no credible evidence showing it happens in significant numbers.

Russia secretly paid millions to a bunch of big right-wing podcasters

Sep 5, 2024, 4:00 PM CD

A cadre of right-wing online personalities including Dave Rubin, Tim Pool, Benny Johnson, and Lauren Southern have all allegedly become unwitting agents of Russian information warfare and its activities in the United States, according to an alarming 32-page federal indictment unsealed by the US District Court of the Southern District of New York on Wednesday.

Who were the affected conservative influencers?

The group targeted by Russia Today was an impressive array of big-deal conservative and/or right-leaning YouTubers. Dave Rubin is the most prominent pundit on the list, suspected to be one of the higher-paid commentators discussed in the indictment. He was dropped from Tenet’s roster four months ago, according to a statement he issued via Twitter on Wednesday; he called the show he made for Tenet “silly.”

The other five influencers are: Tim Pool, known for his Timcast IRL podcast; Lauren Southern, a Canadian alt-right influencer who quit the movement to become a tradwife, then returned to public life after alleging her husband mistreated her; serial plagiarist turned podcaster Benny Johnson; self-described independent journalist Tayler Hansen, whose main gig seems to have been working for Tenet Media as a “field reporter”; and podcaster Matt Christiansen, known for broadcasting from the wilderness, who had made Tenet his primary streaming platform prior to this.

Let's talk about the real problem.

They're counted on the census, whether they're citizens or not.

Not only does this mean more federal money for states that support illegal aliens, but it means they also get more representation in the House of Representatives AND they get more electoral votes.

The implications of this are heavily lopsided in favor of American hating Democrats, especially in the Presidential Election.

Get fucked, worm.

6ix, with your life history, you are the dumbest person you know. But you wouldn't know that. Test your brain, 6ix, on the consequences of Trump's 20% Tariff for all imported goods. I expect you to not understand and not admit you don't understand because that is how every Trumptard I know rolls, including Trump.

Trump's 20% Tariff is today's news:
https://www.google.com/search?q=Trump+20%25+Tariff
Trump claims that with his tariff, there would be no Federal deficit and the tariff would cost Americans nothing. One specific aspect of Trump's tariff:

What would happen if Trump enacted a 20% tariff on all imports? Here it is:

For example, in 2023 the federal government had a budget deficit of $1.8 trillion. Total imports—every car, every refrigerator, and every other physical object shipped into the country—added up to $3.1 trillion. Taking 20% of that nets you $600 billion. If every dollar of this was dumped into the general fund, the budget deficit would have gone down to.......

$1.2 trillion.

This is all ridiculous, of course. Even Trump couldn't apply a 20% tariff to everything, and if he did imports would drop significantly—which would reduce the tariff revenue.

Has any reporter ever asked Trump how much money he thinks his 20% tariffs would raise? Forget the details. Does he even know the simplest possible thing: how much we import and how much 20% of that is? Even Trump would have a hard time evading a question so straightforward.

Former President Donald Trump's recent acknowledgment that he lost the 2020 election has rattled prominent far-right figures, with some saying they will lead a campaign to keep him from being elected in 2024.

At least three times in recent weeks Trump, the 2024 Republican party nominee, has acknowledged that he lost in 2020 "by a whisker."

Despite frequently and falsely claiming that he actually won the election and making the issue a central point of his 2024 bid, Trump has now admitted that he lost.

Trump has flailed back and forth on his positions, drawing rebukes:

"I’m just not sure who is driving the MAGA bus anymore. You’re losing that support from the people that believed in you. … You need those people. That is your base. You can't suddenly change who your base is think that that is going to be a successful strategy here.”

Watch: Trump Short-Circuits While Trying to Claim He’s Not Weird

This attack is really getting under Donald Trump’s skin.

He can’t stop talking about it, which in turn is giving the word traction and a continued association with him and Vance. His repeated denials only drive the point home even further, and neither he nor Vance has come up with an effective response.

Trump’s own words validate the attack, whether he’s fumbling through a rally speech, forgetting who he’s running against, or suddenly flip-flopping on major policy positions. And Vance hasn’t helped, either, with his odd views on family, his associations with neo-Nazis, and his complete inability to order donuts like a normal person (which Walz has no problem doing).

Kamala Harris will win election, predicts leading historian Allan Lichtman

Polling ‘Nostradamus’, said to have correctly forecast since 1984 all races except Gore’s loss, says Trump on track to lose

By Robert Tait | Thu 5 Sep 2024 15.21 EDT

Lichtman accurately forecast Trump’s unheralded 2016 election triumph over Hillary Clinton at a time when most opinion polls indicated a contrary outcome. He also correctly forecast that Trump would be impeached during his presidency – which he was, twice.

Lichtman has predicted that Kamala Harris will win the White House in November’s poll.

“Kamala Harris will be the next president of the United States – at least that’s my prediction for the outcome of this race. But the outcome is up to you. So get out and vote.”

What Tucker Carlson’s Spin on World War II Really Says

Forget the villains of history. The true enemies, in his world, are the culture warriors of the present.

By Megan Garber | September 5, 2024, 1:31 PM ET

https://www.theatlantic.com/culture/archive/2024/09/what-tucker-carlso
ns-spin-on-world-war-ii-really-says/679713
/

In the movie The History Boys, based on Alan Bennett’s play, a student wins a scholarship to Oxford with the help of an argument he makes on an entrance exam: Hitler, he claims, was “much misunderstood.” As fiction, this is mordant comedy — a mockery of the particular type of arrogance required to twist the tragedies of the Holocaust into personal gain. But now the satire has come for our news cycle.

In a long and meandering interview on Tucker Carlson’s show this week, the podcaster Darryl Cooper offered musings about the “mythology”—the heroes, the villains, the plot, the moral stakes—of World War II. In his version, however, it is Winston Churchill who has been much misunderstood. Churchill, Cooper told Carlson, with dramatic flair, “was the chief villain of the Second World War.”

The claim is wrong, in every sense. The gravity of its error was highlighted by a resonant coincidence: Around the time the interview was posted, Alternative for Germany became the first far-right party to win a German state election since the Nazi era. The past is never dead, the old line goes; it is not even past. But Cooper and his enthusiastic host, these history boys with microphones, were not talking about history—not really. They were talking about themselves. They were treating World War II as a branding exercise. And this was, though not surprising in the context of Carlson’s show, a new nadir.

Consensus reality relies on consensus history. In this time of fragile facts, one point most people have been able to agree on is that Hitler was a bad guy. But the time for consensus is over, Cooper implied. Instead, as a phrase in the title of his episode summed things up: “Winston Churchill Ruined Europe.”

What becomes clear during the interview, as Cooper makes his convoluted case (“maybe I’m being a little hyperbolic,” he allows at one point), is that the true villains of his story are not, in the end, Hitler or Churchill, Axis or Allies. Instead, they are the culture warriors of the present: the woke, the mobs, the ruling class—the people who will be offended by claims such as “Winston Churchill Ruined Europe.” And the true heroes, consequently, are those who dare to say the unsayable. “There are just certain things you’re not allowed to question,” Cooper told Carlson, as he questioned the “myths” of World War II. (“Literally, it’s a crime to ask questions?” Carlson replied, before answering his own query: “Yes.”) One might not go to jail for the myth-busting, Cooper allowed; still, “you might have your life ruined and lose your job.” (“You might absolutely go to jail in this country,” Carlson countered.)

If your aim is to offer a clever reading of history rather than a true one, World War II will serve you well: Its excessive documentation is fertile ground, giving you many cherries to pick. It will provide the fodder you need to suggest that the Holocaust was, essentially, an unfortunate accident. And then it will allow you, if you choose, to treat the suffering of the people of the past as evidence for your own victimhood. You can take the accepted narrative and rewrite it.

In other contexts, Cooper and Carlson might have decried such an approach—an archly postmodern attitude in which all facts are relative, all orthodoxies suspect. But history boys need their straw men. And Churchill was the war’s true villain is less an argument than a provocation: a contention that, when World War II is mapped onto Hallin’s spheres, Hitler’s villainy should be relocated to the realm of legitimate controversy. It should be moved there because it is one of those things that you are not allowed to question. “Darryl Cooper may be the best and most honest popular historian in the United States,” Carlson’s show announced, in promoting the interview. “His latest project is the most forbidden of all: trying to understand World War Two.”

“Forbidden”—the stuff of perfumes, of clothing, of heterodox educational institutions—makes sense as branding. The forbidden is exotic. The forbidden is brave. The forbidden can transform history boys into men. And it can do all that from the comfort of one’s personal podcast studio.

History, from such a distance, is easy. Carlson and Cooper can talk about being arrested for questioning orthodoxies with no fear of that actually happening. They can traffic in the mystique of the “forbidden” with no reference to the many things—books, ideas, people—that bear the real risk of being banned. They are free to speak their mind. They are free to do so, indeed, because of the actions of people who did not have the luxury of treating the Holocaust as a thought exercise. The influencers can, if they choose, interpret others’ indignation as their victory. They can brag that they have “weakened the narrative” about World War II. They can choose not to wonder what their questioning really amounts to. “History nowadays is not a matter of conviction,” a teacher in The History Boys announces. “It’s a performance. It’s entertainment.” His students still have time to age out of such arrogance, the film implies. Or at least they should.

The True History of the Jonestown Cult, WWII, and How Winston Churchill Ruined Europe

Fox News Media and its top-rated host Tucker Carlson have agreed to part ways, less than a week after parent company Fox Corp settled for $787.5 million a defamation lawsuit in which Carlson played a starring role. Dominion Voting Systems alleged in its lawsuit that Carlson allowed Trump's debunked election-fraud claims about the voting-technology firm to air on his show.

An Article the Likes of Which Nobody Has Ever Seen Before

By David A. Graham | September 5, 2024, 8:55 AM ET

Stop me if you’ve heard this one before. But don’t worry—nobody has, ever. Or at least, that’s what Donald Trump would say if asked about, well, anything. It’s the ex-president’s favorite locution.

“Groceries, food has gone up at levels that nobody’s ever seen before. We’ve never seen anything like it—50, 60, 70 percent,” Trump said recently. (This is not true, though if it were, it would be unlike anything seen in American history.)

He used the same phrase to speak about law and order last month: “We’re here today to talk about how we are going to stop the Kamala crime wave that is going on at levels that nobody has ever seen before.” (The country is not even at its most violent point in Trump’s life, much less ever.)

Or sometimes he uses it more generally: “Our country cannot stand another four years of what we’ve been through. Our country has been through a trauma, the likes of which we’ve never seen before.” (Not for the first time, he seems to have forgotten about the Civil War.)

Once you start looking for the phrase in Trump’s speeches and remarks, it’s everywhere. “You know what [Election Day]’s going to be called?” he told a religious group this spring. “Christian visibility day, when Christians turn out in numbers that nobody has ever seen before.” He uses a similar idiom—the exact wording does vary at times—to describe the economy as it was during his presidency (“We had the greatest economy in the history of the world. We had never done anything like it”), and as he says it will be: “We’re going to drill, baby, drill. We’re going to close our borders. We’re going to do things like nobody has ever seen before. And we’re going to make our nation’s economy be the best ever in the world.”

Unlike some of Trump’s signature tics—“bigly,” “many people are saying,” “like a dog”—this one may not immediately come off as distinctive. But when I ran nobody has ever seen before through the ProQuest database, I found that about two-thirds of the roughly 1,500 occurrences were Trump’s. Among the ones that weren’t, most were literal, sometimes even accurate, instances: archival photos of the Monkees, new paleontological finds, Steph Curry statistical anomalies.

The use and abuse of the phrase illuminates Trump’s salesman instincts. The case is not only that Trump speaks in hyperbole, though he does. He also strives for novelty, telling people that whatever thing he’s hawking is entirely new to the human experience. This comes naturally, because he sees the world in absolutes and demonstrates very little interest in learning, so he may not actually know much about relevant comparisons. In one especially notable example, Trump seemed to learn about the basics of the Constitution at the same time that he misrepresented them. “Nobody ever mentions Article II,” he said in 2019. “It gives me all those rights at a level that nobody has ever seen before.”

This is part of the formula that has worked so well for Trump; he knows a good sales technique, accuracy be damned. It demands attention—this thing is totally new—and, in a way, that novelty actually affords credibility. Trump’s political identity revolves around a willingness to say what other politicians won’t, and the exaggerated claims reinforce his image, as he’s the only one willing to say such preposterous things.

More traditional politicians tend to seek credibility by appealing to expertise or precedent. For example, here’s Kamala Harris at a rally this week: “He wants to impose what, in effect, would be a national sales tax. I call it the ‘Trump national sales tax’ on everyday products and basic necessities that would cost a typical American family—the economists have said this—almost $4,000 a year.” That’s a discrete number, and a vague but concrete source: “the economists.” That also makes it fact-checkable; PolitiFact calls it “half true” for choosing the most extreme estimates and oversimplifying. By contrast, here’s a typical Trump stump claim: “This is a movement the likes of which they’ve never seen before, maybe anywhere, but certainly in this country.” Fact-checking this is not only impossible; it’s beside the point.

One reason some of the things Trump talks about have never been seen before is that they’re bad ideas. Novelty—when that’s even the case—doesn’t necessarily mean quality. Other times the claims are simply nonsense, and they force Trump to one-up not only history but himself. “Many people are now saying that this is the worst storm/hurricane they have ever seen,” Trump tweeted in August 2017. Two weeks later, amid another storm, he wrote, “Many people are now saying that this is the worst storm/hurricane they have ever seen.” At some point, the listener becomes numb.

Similarly desensitizing are the wild-eyed predictions. “If anyone but me takes over in 2020 (I know the competition very well), there will be a Market Crash the likes of which has not been seen before! KEEP AMERICA GREAT,” he posted in 2019. By the following fall, he’d escalated the threat: “Joe Biden and the radical, socialist Democrats would immediately collapse the economy. If they got in, they would collapse it. You’ll have a crash the likes of which you’ve never seen before.” He lost the election, but none of that has happened (so far).

The failure of these hair-on-fire forecasts has naturally not chastened Trump. In February, at the Conservative Political Action Conference, he warned of new catastrophic consequences if he didn’t win in 2024. “They’ll soon have us losing World War III,” he said. “We won’t even be in World War III; we’ll be losing World War III with weapons the likes of which nobody has ever seen before.” If he wins, however, “we’re going to bring this into a golden age like never seen before.” Don’t count on seeing it then, either.

If you are talking about Tucker Carlson on Fox, he has lied constantly about Trump winning in 2020 at a cost of three quarters of a billion dollars penalty to his employer.

Russia targeted the American Right

As you all know by now, a couple of days ago the Justice Department indicted a pair of Russian nationals who work for the Russian propaganda outlet RT. They are charged with secretly bankrolling Tenet Media, a startup content farm that churned out right-wing videos. But why?

The scheme helped to launch Tenet as a serious player in conservative media, fueled by content from Trump-supporting personalities who questioned the legitimacy of the 2020 election, had well-known views hostile to U.S. support for Ukraine in its war against Russia and advanced narratives that at times aligned with Russian talking points.

I doubt this was part of an effort to reelect Donald Trump. Tenet's viral videos were quite obviously aimed at true believers who were already committed to Trump.

Most likely, its aim was simpler: persuading right-wingers not to support Ukraine. They're the ones listening to Tenet, after all, not centrists or liberals. And Russia has been remarkably successful in this. What's interesting is that their efforts all along have been aimed at conservatives, who would normally be thought of as tougher sells. But the combination of Ukraine being "Biden's war" along with Donald Trump's sympathetic views of Russia made the far right natural targets. It's worked pretty well.

Trumptards got the idea from Trump who was impeached over Ukraine. Google has the full story:

With Trump out of office, the Russians needed new ways to spread the idea about Ukraine. That is why the Russians paid millions to Tenet Media to spread the idea.

Trumptards are the problem. Their bad behavior sabotages Democracy and just about every other organization they get involved with, be it family or business. They, like Trump, won't pay all their taxes. They, like Trump, will lie if there is some small benefit to gain. And they shirk work. Trump spent almost a year golfing and didn't get to work in the morning, which made him the biggest shirker of work in Presidential history.

The End of Democracy Has Already Begun

By Anne Applebaum

The corruption of democracy begins with the corruption of thought—and with the deliberate undermining of reality. Stephen Richer, an election official in Arizona, and Adam Kinzinger, a former Republican congressman, learned firsthand how easily false stories and conspiracy theories could disorient their colleagues. They talk with hosts Anne Applebaum and Peter Pomerantsev about how conformism and fear made it impossible to do their jobs.

https://www.anneapplebaum.com/2024/09/06/start-with-a-lie/

Applebaum: Peter, when did you start to see things in the United States shift—shift away from a democratic culture?

Pomerantsev: Look, it’s a slightly personal issue for me. My parents were Soviet dissidents in Soviet Ukraine, where I was born. They were arrested by the KGB. We were exiled in the late 1970s (I was still a baby at the time), and after the fall of the U.S.S.R., I went and lived in Russia and Moscow from 2001 to 2010. That was the first 10 years of the Putin era and, in that time, I saw Russia degrade from a really rotten democracy to a really aggressive dictatorship.

And I actually remember one moment quite clearly: This must have been still during the Obama era. I was visiting the U.S. on holiday or for a work trip or something, and I suddenly found myself among groups of people who subscribed to this idea of birtherism, that Obama had not been born in America.

Applebaum: Exactly. And if he wasn’t born in America, then he’s not qualified to be president.

Pomerantsev: But it was the way they were talking about it. I mean, the evidence was not important to them. I mean, you could provide loads of evidence that Obama had been born in America—that wasn’t the point. The way they were using this conspiracy was kind of a real warning sign.

This wasn’t like, I don’t know, the Kennedy assassination, where people try to find the truth out. Here, people I met who signed up to the birther conspiracy didn’t care about evidence. They said things I heard in Russia when it was fading into dictatorship. They would say, I don’t know. The truth is unknowable. There are no such things as real facts or even evidence. But what did matter was how you signaled your political affiliation by making a conspiratorial statement.

Applebaum: Yep, and this is exactly how a conspiracy theory—a big lie—functions in an autocratic political system. It helps the leader, the autocrat, establish who’s loyal, who’s on our side, and who’s not. You know, if you promise to believe in the made-up story, then you can work for the government or the party or whatever, and if you don’t, you’re out. And so this then, not merit or hard work, determines who gets promoted and who runs things.

Pomerantsev: To show that you belonged to the Putin system, you had to repeat absurd lies that people Putin was arresting were guilty of totally absurd charges. You had to agree that Nazis were taking over Ukraine. You know, that could be socially very awkward at first, and people could get quite aggressive, especially when they were drunk. And after a while, it just became dangerous because if you disagreed with these absurd statements, with these conspiracy theories, then you were essentially an enemy of the state. And that would become incredibly dangerous.

Applebaum: When I first saw birtherism unfolding in the U.S., my first reaction was, No way is this happening here. Americans can’t fall for this kind of garbage.

Pomerantsev: Sorry—why did you think Americans were immune, just out of interest?

Applebaum: Wrongly, I imagined our political system is too big, and our democracy is too well anchored, and people don’t believe in conspiracy theories. And obviously I was wrong.

Pomerantsev: You know, once you get into this world where truth is a subset of power, it basically means that you can’t have democratic debate anymore.

Applebaum: Eastern Europeans are familiar with the idea of ruling by conspiracy. But in contemporary America, this is new. And it’s so new, in fact, that I’m not sure Americans realize the significance of it.

Stephen Richer: In May of 2021, Donald Trump accused me of deleting files from the 2020 election. And that was—it’s just hard to describe, but it’s a little bit like the Eye of Sauron. With that, when it’s turned on you, you feel it, and people start contacting you, and you get a lot of ugliness directed your way.

Applebaum: Stephen Richer is an election official in Maricopa County, Arizona. And this disorienting accusation began, at first, as something completely impossible for him to imagine: that the president knew his name and was releasing statements directed at his office.

CNN newscaster Erin Burnett: Tonight, a bitter feud erupting among Arizona Republicans over an election audit of the state’s most populous county.

Fox 10 Phoenix newscaster Ty Brennan: Trump released a statement yesterday saying, quote, “The entire database of Maricopa County in Arizona has been deleted. This is illegal, and the Arizona state Senate, who is leading the forensic audit, is up in arms.”

Applebaum: At first, it felt somewhat impossible for Richer to take this kind of accusation seriously. He knew it wasn’t true. He could see all the files on the county computers every day he went to work. They hadn’t disappeared at all.

Brennan: In response, Republican recorder Stephen Richer sent out a tweet saying, quote, “Wow. This is unhinged. I’m literally looking at our voter registration database on my other screen. Right now. We can’t indulge these insane lies any longer.”

Applebaum: And then these claims started to take hold with other big players in the Trump circle.

Richer: Christina Bobb from One America News Network was here. The “Stop the Steal” candidates throughout the country would come into Arizona and almost pay pilgrimage, pay homage to that production.

Applebaum: And were the attacks on you—what were they accusing you of doing?

Richer: Everything from rigging tabulation equipment to falsifying evidence to deleting electronic files to, you know, turning my back on my people to not maintaining proper chain of custody. I just—the breadth is really breathtaking. Some of it is quite imaginative, and never in a million years would I have thought that somebody would have accused me of shredding ballots from the 2020 election, feeding them to chickens, and then burning the chickens to cover the evidence.

[Music]

Pomerantsev: It’s something right out of the sort of absurdist stories that you hear about politics in Eastern Europe, where the regime is using absolutely nonsensical charges against you, and their very absurdity shows that you’re kind of powerless to fight back. Because how do you fight back against somebody accusing you of feeding chickens with election ballots?

Applebaum: Right. This was the kind of archetypic, absurdist thing that happened in communist Poland or communist Czechoslovakia. You know, you would be accused of something ludicrous or ridiculous, and there would be no way to defend yourself. But the whole system would somehow take it incredibly seriously.

Pomerantsev: You can’t actually fight back against absurdity. It’s actually very—well, let me put it differently: It starts off funny, and then it becomes really creepy.

I kind of always thought, just like you did with birtherism and with conspiracy theories, that in the U.S., false accusations would be quickly knocked down by the press—just by the system that is, at the end of the day, grounded in some sort of rationality. Or at the very least, I kind of thought that somebody like Stephen Richer—who, well, let’s put it very basically, is a white election official, not a particularly vulnerable member of society—that they would be able to defend themselves pretty easily against blatant lies. But that is not what was happening at all.

Applebaum: No, in Maricopa County, which is a completely ordinary part of America, we see not just accusations of fraud but ridiculous accusations of fraud, and they were being taken seriously.

Richer: I remember vividly one of the meetings I went to in front of a group of about 50 grassroots activists in the Republican Party, and the first question they asked was, Were the tabulation machines in 2020 connected to the internet?

And we had just had three professional elections-technologies companies come in and test that very thing, among other things. So I knew, categorically, as sure as I possibly could, that the answer to that was no. But you could look into their faces and see that that was not going to go down well.

And I said it, and then it turned into just a lot of shouting, a lot of obscenities, and then ultimately following me out to my car.

Applebaum: It got personal, and it got much worse from there.

Richer: A man from Missouri made a phone call telling me, in no uncertain terms, what he thought of me and what he was going to do because I had said that President Trump’s comments were unhinged regarding his allegations that I had deleted the files.

Applebaum: And do you think that the people who criticized you or attacked you—do you think they believed Trump, or had they departed already from any idea of reality, or was it something they said for political reasons?

Richer: The politicians say it for political reasons. I think the people online and a lot of the people from the Republican grass roots of Arizona who email me really believe it. And it conforms to what they want to believe about the world, which is, I think, a real victimization right now and an explanation of how they lost in 2020 that isn’t simply that more Arizonans voted for Joe Biden, because I don’t think they want to embrace that possibility. And it’s incompatible with the world that they see around them when they go to Trump events and see Trump flags, and their neighbors voted for Trump.

Lichtman is either lying to himself or somebody who edits wikipedia is filling that out for him.

They've got TRUE listed for "Strong Short Term Economy", "Strong Long Term Economy", "Major Policy Change" and "No Social Unrest".

They've also put Likely-FALSE for "Major foreign or military failure" and Likely-TRUE for "Major foreign or military success".

Oh... I see.

Here's what that table looked like yesterday.

https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=The_Keys_to_the_White_House
&diff=1244511432&oldid=1244296781

Looks like the boys and girls have been having a little war over the keys at Wikipedia.

If Lichtman himself is going to change the definitions for attaining keys, he's going to watch his model fail and nobody take him seriously in the future in his old age.

Not a good plan.

The Office of the Director of National Intelligence (ODNI) announced Friday that it has not “observed” any foreign interference in the 2024 election, seemingly undermining cynical remarks by Attorney General Merrick Garland.

The ODNI’s Foreign Malign Influence Center (FMIC) stated in a 2-page report that the intelligence community “has not observed any foreign actor seeking to interfere in the conduct of the 2024 elections.”
Natalie Winters, a co-host of the Steve Bannon WarRoom podcast, first reported these findings.

While the report stipulated that Russia “poses the most active foreign influence threat” to the election, it found no evidence of meddling. The FMIC’s assertions come just days after Garland issued dire warnings about so-called foreign influence targeting the election.

IMHO this just goes to show that "The Interagency" is still butt-puckeringly worri3d about a possible Trump victory, and that they're scared of possible indictments (which they should be, since they're our biggest threat to democracy.)

Putin Ally Predicts US Will Collapse in 'Imminent New Civil War'

Former Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev, a close ally of Russian President Vladimir Putin, issued a warning on Saturday predicting the United States will collapse in an "imminent new civil war" amid this year's election over Russian sanctions.

"Out of spite for the current administration, Donald Trump has threatened to lift sanctions against Russia. But will he really do it if elected? No, of course not. For all his apparent bravado as an 'outsider', Trump is ultimately an establishment insider. Yes, he is an eccentric narcissist, but he is also a pragmatist. As a businessman, Trump understands that sanctions harm the dollar's dominance in the world. However, that's insufficient reason to stage a revolution in the United States and go against the anti-Russian line of the notorious Deep State, which is much stronger than any Trump," Medvedev said.

He added: "But what about Harris? You shouldn't expect any surprises from her. She is inexperienced and, according to her enemies, just plain stupid. Beautiful meaningless speeches and boring 'correct' answers to questions will be prepared for her, which she will read off a teleprompter while laughing contagiously. There were sanctions against the USSR throughout the 20th century, and they've returned on an unprecedented scale in the 21st. So, it's sanctions forever. Or rather, until the US collapses during an imminent new civil war. After all, Hollywood makes films about this for a reason."

This is not the first time Medvedev has warned of a civil war as he previously issued a warning to the U.S. on July 4, suggesting there are parallels between the American Civil War and the current U.S. political climate that hint at a "premonition of civil war."

Right after Paul Bremer and Paul Wolfowitz disbanded the Iraqi Army, they instantly created 2.5 million unemployed professional Iraqi soldiers, many of whom had families to feed. Where did they go? Insurgency.

It caused chaos since the Iraqi Army, no longer being paid, could not hold Iraq together. Instead, the former soldiers went on their own little missions to kill their enemies. Murder rampages followed from disbanding the Army without thinking about what purpose the Army had been serving and what the ex-soldiers, now unemployed, would do with their lives.

Second hasn't even realized he's already lost this argument when, rather than just stay completely silent about the Cheney issue like the Legacy Media is trying to do, he is seriously going to defend Dick Fucking Cheney while still trying to pretend that he's a Democrat.

Now I've seen it all.

Ted has been posting Bushite NeoCon propaganda from The Lincoln Project for years now, so it wouldn't surprise me if being happy that Cheney supported his gal was his response to the news.

I never have seen the conflict with Republicans or Trumptards as a conflict of "values". It is conflict over how Trumptards/Republicans make decisions, whether it is diagnosing a machine (they misunderstand the control panel alarms), or their marriages (in trouble because of their adultery which their spouse suspects them of), or their investments (their attraction to scams like Trump's Truth Social or Trump Entertainment Resorts, Inc.), or deciding to cheat on their taxes while simultaneously whining about the National Debt. Trumptards/Republicans don't make good decisions, either personal, business, or political. Trump can't fix it for you since he doesn't make good decisions, just like his Trumptards don't.

Cheney made a bad decision to promote the false story that Iraq had WMDs and Trump made a bad decision to promote the false story that the 2020 election was stolen. That is how Republicans/Trumptards are. Bad decision-makers.

This is pure bullshit. Nothing but more of the constant antecdotal "evidence" that is presented by a highly dubious and obviously extremely biased source every day in the RWED. It was pure bullshit the first time you said it 10 years ago, and it's pure bullshit the 10,000th time you've said it today.

Former Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev, a close ally of Russian President Vladimir Putin, issued a warning on Saturday predicting the United States will collapse in an "imminent new civil war" amid this year's election over Russian sanctions.

First of all, where was the editor??
That sentence doesn't even make sense.

Secondly, Medvedev can say whatever the hell he wants. Do you think we should, or even can, make a Russian citizen in Russia, stick with our narrative???
You stupid.

Thirdly, we should be able to read about it. This is the opinion of an important man in the government of what is an adversary. Treating Americans like mushrooms... i.e. in the dark and being fed shit ... is no way to make a strong democracy.

And finally, you "forgot" to address this part:

Nick Fuentes is now accusing Donald Trump of ‘betrayal’ - and people have no sympathy

Far-right commentator Nick Fuentes – who has been labelled a white supremacist by the US Department of Justice (DOJ) – is now accusing Donald Trump of “betrayal” after the Republican changed his views on the 2020 presidential election and conceded he lost after all.

Of course, to many, the former US president’s history of mistruths, false claims and inaccuracies are well-known.

Now, in the latest case of flip-flopping from Trump, he’s finally admitted in an interview with podcaster Lex Fridman earlier this week he “lost by a whisker” in 2020 to Joe Biden, as opposed to his repeated false claims that the election was “stolen” from him in a case of “fraud” – which the media refers to as his “big lie”.

And Fuentes isn’t happy about this, claiming Trump’s remarks about the 2020 election demonstrate “how pathetic its [MAGA] has gotten”.

He said: “[Trump] says, ‘oh, I lost by a whisker’. So what was the point? What’s the point of any of it? You lost in 2020, seriously? What are we even doing anymore?

“Then you’re a loser. You’re a loser. You just lost. Then you lost to Joe Biden, you deserve to be charged.”

Fuentes also claimed that Trump’s admission that he lost to Biden “vindicates” the indictment brought by the DOJ last month over the convicted felon’s attempts to overturn the results of the 2020 presidential election, which was revised from a previous indictment following the Supreme Court’s ruling that Trump has “some” immunity from prosecution as a former president.

Biden won that popularity contest by less than 4 points, and we all know what happened in 2016.

Harris will NEVER rise above 1 or 2 points in the aggregate on Trump, even with the gaslighting. She's peaked. This is her plateau.

Once they can't hide her anymore and everybody gets to see how dumb she is and how toxic her policies are for our country, it's all over for you.

Maybe some of you will finally stop blindly believing everything MSNBC tells you once this happens.

Hope you're really enjoying yourselves in the meantime.

1.9 points. 1.9 points was Harris' peak.

She hit 1.7 points on August 21st and has now floundered between 1.5 points and 1.9 points for the 17 days since.

The DNC was August 19th through the 22nd. RFK dropped out of the race on August 23rd.

Both of these events are now baked into the polls.

Morning Consult's most recent poll put Harris at +3 when its previous poll had her at +4. Outside of Rasmussen Reports, any polls that have Harris higher than the last time they polled were a LONG time ago and predated the DNC.

On this day in history Biden was up +7.1 and Clinton was up +3.1 in the meaningless Popular Vote. Harris is only up 1.8 points.

I should mention that I am not saying that Harris won't rise above 2 if something extraordinary were to happen. But we've already had a senile old incumbent drop out of the race after he already won the primary he shouldn't have ever won if the media did their jobs instead of helping Democrats hide how bad Joe* really was for years. Then we watched the news downplay an assassination attempt and push it completely out of the public conscious in a little over a month.

How are they going to one-up that?

The establishment media would love nothing more than to be giving Harris 7.2 points right now like they were giving Joe Biden*, but 1.9 is the best they can do. That's enough for Trump to win easily if the systemic bias in the polls from the previous two election cycles also exist today and were applied.

Remember that between now and election day in 2016 the RCP aggregate for Hillary Clinton had risen to as high as 7.1 against Trump, and they pegged Joe Biden* as high as 10.3 points above Trump on October 11th, 2020.
