This May Be the Kookiest Conspiracy Theory We’ve Heard All Year From a Politician
And that’s saying something.

By Molly Olmstead | Sept 09, 2024, 4:54 PM

“The Great Depression was pretty well planned.” —Sen. Ron Johnson, when asked about the national debt on a conservative radio show in early September

At this point, with Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene’s Jewish space lasers, Rep. Lauren Boebert’s assertion that Joe Biden got dementia from the COVID vaccine, and Donald Trump’s careless promotion of QAnon, it’s tempting to think that many of our government officials have had their brains completely addled by internet conspiracy theories. But every once in a while, a politician comes along to remind us that our representatives don’t always need the internet’s help—they are totally capable of latching on to nonsensical beliefs the old-fashioned way.

Sen. Ron Johnson, a Republican from Wisconsin, did just that in an appearance on a radio show that surfaced last week.

On Tuesday, Johnson appeared on the Vicki McKenna Show, a conservative radio show out of Wisconsin, and spoke about his “investigations” into the “corruption of federal agencies.” He also spoke of his motivation to run for reelection to advocate “for the vaccine-injured.” But it was his answer to a question about debt that got the most wide-eyed attention on social media, after it was posted by a progressive radio station. Asked by the host whether it was “possible to stave off a debt crisis” until Trump could step in and fix the problem, Johnson gave a strange answer:
Quote:

Well, we’ve been doing it for years by just printing more money. Now, one of the interesting revelations of Creature From Jekyll Island is the fact that the Great Depression was pretty well planned. You know, all the big money men were pretty well warned that they were going to finally collapse the system.

So, again, I know this. I know it really sounds like a conspiracy theory. I don’t completely understand it. But it sure seems—it just, in my bones, I just feel there’s a great deal of corruption and control there that the vast majority of people do not understand.

The general tone of what Johnson said did appear to fit with a more well-known body of conspiracy theories about the Federal Reserve, and of supposed communist infiltration of the banking system more generally.

Also, the book Johnson cited as a source—The Creature From Jekyll Island, published in 1994—relates a Federal Reserve conspiracy theory. The eponymous “creature” is the Fed; Jekyll Island, in Georgia, was the setting of a 1910 meeting in which wealthy men drafted legislation to create a central banking system. (The meeting did happen, but it did not create the Fed, as the book implies; ideas from what was discussed at the meeting were instead later incorporated into a separate Federal Reserve Act.)

Mark Pitcavage, a senior research fellow at the Anti-Defamation League Center on Extremism, said he had been surprised to hear Johnson reference the title, calling it an “infamous far-right conspiracy-theory book” and “not a remotely reputable source.”

And yet, the tradition of anti-Fed conspiracy theories is a robust one. According to Pitcavage, the far right has, for decades, been opposed to the country’s central banking system and invented conspiracy theories to support its feelings of distrust. These conspiracy theories typically fall into two camps, he said: the ones that posit that a group of extremely wealthy bankers created the Fed to manipulate the nation’s finances for their own gain, and the overtly antisemitic ones, which follow the same narrative, except the powerful bankers are all, emphatically, Jewish.

'Russia, Russia, Russia' is not a hoax

By Joe Conason | September 09, 2024

https://www.alternet.org/russia-russia-russia/

Years before former President Donald Trump seized upon the Big Lie that the 2020 presidential election had been stolen, he insistently promoted another supersized falsehood -- namely that charges of Russian interference in the 2016 election were "a hoax." His minions in the media, from Fox News down to the lowliest web trolls, have incessantly parroted that lie despite the volumes of evidence uncovered by the Senate Intelligence Committee's bipartisan investigation and the special counsel probe by Robert Mueller.

But now a fresh indictment released by the Justice Department on Sept. 4 shows that the Kremlin conspiracy to rig U.S. elections in favor of the Republican Party is not a liberal myth but a live threat -- and that several of the most prominent MAGA media voices denouncing the "hoax" were themselves on the Russian payroll, taking big money. The charges lodged against Russia Today employees Kostiantyn Kalashnikov and Elena Afanasyeva include money laundering, conspiracy and violations of the Foreign Agents Registration Act. https://www.justice.gov/d9/2024-09/u.s._v._kalashnikov_and_afanasyeva_
indictment_0.pdf

The indictment describes in detail, with supporting documents translated from Russian, how Kremlin consultants and employees of RT, the state media outlet, directed at least $10 million in funding to a shadowy Tennessee firm known as Tenet Media.

Working under direct control of the Russians were Lauren Chen, a Canadian far-right YouTube "influencer" who also worked for Glenn Beck's BlazeTV, and her husband Liam Donovan. Chen and Donovan launched Tenet and hired major right-wing personalities such as Tim Pool, host of "Timcast," Dave Rubin, Benny Johnson, a former Buzzfeed reporter fired for plagiarism, and Lauren Southern, a white nationalist who is also from Canada.

The idea was to draw their millions of online followers into an audience for streaming Tenet videos -- and the company paid them each hundreds of thousands of dollars. One of them, identified in the indictment as "Commentator-1" and most likely either Johnson or Pool, received $400,000 per month for producing four videos.

Of far more significance than the gamy individuals who joined up with Tenet was the company's deeper purpose, as outlined by the Russians in a document reproduced as part of the indictment. Their project's top "objectives" as the election year approached were to target voters in swing states, Hispanic and Jewish voters, and "residents of conservative states" who usually vote Republican, and to move them toward pro-Russian viewpoints about the war in Ukraine, while undermining confidence in President Joe Biden and promoting discontent over the economy and culture, especially among white Americans.

Its stated "goal" was to "secure victory of U.S. Political Party A candidate" -- which meant to elect Trump as president.

In short, federal investigators caught "Russia, Russia, Russia" -- as a mocking Trump likes to say -- interfering yet again to prop up his campaign. And just as word of the indictment broke, the Republican presidential nominee reiterated his promise to sell out Ukraine for a "peace" plan as soon as he wins election, even before he enters the White House. What Russia spent on Tenet would be pocket change compared with that return on investment.

Although the indictment depicts Rubin and Pool as ignorant of their sponsorship by the Russian government, and presumably duped by the cover story of a "Belgian investor" who didn't actually exist, none of them seemed too curious about who was financing this mysterious windfall. They apparently never imagined that spouting Russian propaganda against Ukraine, as all of them consistently did, might have attracted Kremlin sponsorship. Chen and Donovan evidently knew the venture was subsidized by Russian funds, routed through Mideast banks.

Indeed, Rubin, Johnson and Pool immediately declared they are innocent "victims" of the Russian scheme, defrauded into serving as Kremlin stooges. But they have also suggested, along with a chorus of right-wing defenders on Fox and elsewhere, that the indictment is actually a conspiracy by the Justice Department to censor "conservatives" and frighten gullible voters with "dirty tricks."

So which is it? The ugly truth is that the American Right, deeply compromised by the Kremlin connections of its leader Trump, doesn't care that he or its own media networks have been penetrated by a hostile foreign power. They are happy to take Russian money, or at least are untroubled when others grab those rubles -- just as "conservatives" were once content to secretly accept illicit millions from the Korean cult leader Sun Myung Moon or, for that matter, from agents of the German government during the years before World War II.

There are lots of terms to define these acts and attitudes -- some legalistic, others defamatory. But none of those descriptions would include "patriotic."

I thought we were talking about overpopulation? You kind of went off on a tangent about college educated white women.
But it would be interesting to insert temporary emergencies into the works to test people's preparedness.

Holy shit people. Every household should already have an emergency preparedness kit that will meet the family's needs for three days. Much of what you need to make it through an extended power outage will be on hand with the gear on the checklist found at www.Ready.gov, the emergency preparedness website of the Federal Emergency Management Agency.

What’s really happening in Springfield?

By Kevin Drum | September 9, 2024 – 3:29 pm

https://jabberwocking.com/whats-really-happening-in-springfield/

This goes into the file of sentences you never expected to see:

The Springfield Police Division said Monday morning they have received no reports related to pets being stolen and eaten.

If you have no idea what this is all about, count your blessings. It means you're a normal person who doesn't chase right-wing memes down rabbit holes. Naturally I'm now going to ruin this for you.

The Springfield in question is Springfield, Ohio, about 15 miles from Dayton. Something like 15,000 Haitian refugees have resettled there recently, and a year ago one of them ran into a school bus and killed an 11-year-old student. J.D. Vance made hay with this and everything spiraled from there. A few days ago someone in a Springfield Facebook group claimed that Haitians were catching and butchering local ducks and cats. America 2100, an anti-immigrant organization, followed up with a Twitter thread about the horrors of Haitian immigrants in Springfield, which was then picked up by Benny Johnson, Breitbart, Elon Musk, the GOP, and a vast host of others. Within a couple of days it had all gone viral.

Aside from the brutal racism involved in all this, it's ironic for two reasons. First, until recently Springfield was a dying town. Ten years ago it began a program to attract new business and it was stunningly successful: before long it had produced more jobs than the town could fill. According to the New York Times, "Many young, working-age people had descended into addiction. Others shunned entry-level, rote work altogether, employers said."

The Haitian community heard about this and rescued Springfield. They migrated from other states and filled the jobs, doing them so well that more and more businesses set up shop. By all accounts, the Haitian settlers were hard working, law abiding, and healthy. “It was incredible to witness the transformation of our community,” said Horton Hobbs, vice president of economic development for the Greater Springfield Partnership, which executed the plan.

The second point of irony is that this has nothing to do with either Joe Biden or Kamala Harris. Most of the Haitians were already in the country thanks to the Cuban Haitian Entrant Program of 1980. They moved to Springfield because they learned that it had lots of good jobs. "Haitians who heard that the Springfield area boasted well-paying, blue-collar jobs and a low cost of living poured in, and employers were eager to hire and train the new work force."

Now, there's no question that the influx of refugees over the past five years has taken a toll. Clinics and schools have been overwhelmed, and it's taken a while to adjust. Housing prices have gone up. Crime spiked in 2021, but that appears to be mostly a statistical artifact due to changes in how aggravated assault was defined.

So who's behind the viral meme about the immigrant horrors of Springfield? Good question. Semafor has reported on a secretive group being paid considerable sums to create right wing social media memes. Russia paid $10 million to create Tenet Media, a fake news outlet that released thousands of right wing videos. The FBI recently seized 32 websites that were part of a Russian disinformation program called Doppelganger, which produced realistic looking fake news sites as part of its “Good Old USA Project.”

So who knows? The Springfield meme could be one of those or it could be some other freelance group. In any case, there's very little about it that's truthful. The Haitians are in Springfield essentially because they were invited. Most of them had nothing to do with Joe Biden's Haitian parole program. Real-life crime doesn't appear to be up much. The Haitian immigrants are highly valued by local employers. It is true that the influx has strained public services, but even that is being steadily addressed.

But it doesn't matter, does it? Thousands of people have seen the viral Springfield stuff. Maybe millions. Conversely, probably a few hundred will see this post. The damage is done.

No I didn't miss the point, you did. The point being, that's how bad trump is. He is so bad, that even George Bush's vice president who is as conservative as they come says he cannot be allowed to win. He is so bad; his own vice president will not endorse him. Nor will 3/4 to all of Trump's own cabinet members not only not vote for him, but actively campaigned against him.

I suggest you watch the debate tonight if you want even more reasons than I've already given you as to why Kamala should be president.

I don't intend to watch.

Whatever Kamala says, I know what she'll DO: She'll do whatever the globalist "Interagency" wants her to do. And THEY'LL continue to sacrifice America for their globalist ambitions, because they're corrupt and traitors.

All I want is what's best for America.

I don't give a crap about what happens in Russia, China, or elsewhere until it affects us directly. I have no desire to destroy Russia, China, or Iran; or to destroy Palestinians, Lebanese, or Syrians; or to promote Israel; or extend our reach into every corner of the globe. I have no interest in "protecting" or "enforcing democracy" especially when we're overturning democratically elected governments to do it (Russia, Ukraine, Syria, Venezuela) and which is usually just an excuse for a nation-destroying clusterfuck, like Iraq, Afghanistan, Libya, and (now) Ukraine.

What I would like is for America to be as independent and self sufficient as possible, not depending on the Mideast for energy or China for manufacturing or poorer nations around the world as targets for our loans or as a source of cheap illegal labor. Or requiring banks to use our dollar OR ELSE thru threats of sanctions, but have our dollar value supported by the value of our productive economy, a modest debt load, and a near neutral trade balance.

And if that wasn't enough, I would really like to see infrastructural repair, conservation and rehabilitation of all kinds, meaningful work at decent wages for everyone who can work, an equal opportunity meritocracy, and a restoration of our Constitutional protections.

And the only thing that all requires is to wrest power from the obscenely wealthy and powerful individuals and corporations, and make everyone's vote equal.

Let's depose the Darth Vaders.

Headline from NYTimes:

For Trump, Tariffs Are the Solution to Almost Any Problem
The former president has proposed using tariffs to fund child care, boost manufacturing, quell immigration and encourage use of the dollar. Economists are skeptical.

This highlights a problem either with journalists or with economists. I can safely say that economists aren't "skeptical" of Trump's tariff blather. They think it's straight up bullshit.

So is the problem that economists are too polite to say so when a Times reporter calls? Or that the Times reporter feels an obligation to tone down what they say in order not to seem anti-Trump?

The truth is pretty simple:

• Tariffs don't "tend" to be borne by US businesses and households. They just are. They're collected by the customs service from American importers.

• Tariffs would not "likely" generate less than the trillions of dollars Trump promises. They wouldn't, period. On net, they might even generate negative revenue.

• Retaliatory tariffs wouldn't "probably" do little to affect the dollar's role as a reserve currency. They would almost certainly make the dollar less attractive. The whole idea of using harsh tariffs to protect the dollar is "a bit nuts," says Brad Setser.

• "Most economists" don't say that Trump's tariffs would increase inflation. They all do.

I understand the obligations reporters are under to appear evenhanded. Language has to be restrained. Everything has to be sourced. You can't just state things on your own authority.

And yet, an ordinary person who managed to plow through the entire Times piece would probably come out of it thinking that tariffs are kind of complicated and it's not really clear if Trump is right or not. This is simply not correct.

We still haven't figured out how to cover someone who lies and blusters the way Trump does. When he says that tariffs on China are paid by China, he's either lying or he's a moron. That's it. Those are the choices. But you can't say that in the New York Times.

6ix, are you really thinking this is true or did your fingers write the nonsense, not your brain? 6ix, when banks make home loans equal to 80% of the home's value, does that drive up the cost of all houses by 80%? Then to make the price of houses cheaper, the Federal government should make all mortgages illegal. The only legal way to pay for a house is to save up 100% of the home's price.

There is a HUGE difference between taking out a loan in the private sector and getting a $25,000 handout on the taxpayer dime. HUGE difference. It shouldn't even need to be said, but I'm dealing with an idiot.

That being said, of course loans do make the prices of houses more expensive, dolt. If there were no ways of securing a mortgage to buy a home, the price of homes would have never been able to climb. Nobody would be buying homes if nobody could afford to ever pay for a home with cash or goods or services. There would be no housing market.

So your proposed solution below is a load of garbage too, and certainly something I would never say should be done. The world economy as we know it would grind to a halt today if they were to make mortgages illegal.

Trump promises $2 per gallon gasoline. He is either lying or he is stupidly misunderstanding how prices for fuel are set and how much the Federal government will have to pay to keep prices that low using subsides. Venezuela can keep gasoline prices in pennies per gallon so why can't the US?

6ix, are you really thinking this is true or did your fingers write the nonsense, not your brain? 6ix, when banks make home loans equal to 80% of the home's value, does that drive up the cost of all houses by 80%?

Then to make the price of houses cheaper, the Federal government should make all mortgages illegal. The only legal way to pay for a house is to save up 100% of the home's price.

Taibbi: Official Donald Trump-Kamala Harris Debate Drinking Game Rules
Tuesday, Sep 10, 2024 - 05:35 PM

Authored by Matt Taibbi via Racket News,

Since the last presidential debate between Donald Trump and Joe Biden ended the latter’s re-election bid, newshounds are emptying Thesauruses in search of maximalist language to describe the import of tonight’s clash between Kamala Harris and Trump. “With no other debates scheduled between Ms. Harris and Mr. Trump,” the New York Times writes, “the face-off figures to be one of the highest-stakes 90 minutes in American politics in generations.”

It’s also likely to be one of the most abhorrent, ear-splitting, cliché-ridden, factually unmoored, cringe-inducing live TV spectacles ever. Or the worst, at least, since the last debate. Pre- and post-debate commentary will be critical. The notion that the press heavily influences perception of who “wins” and “loses” debates has been a tired media saw since the 1960 Kennedy-Nixon affair, but audiences are tougher now. They are more likely to see through narrative-shaping efforts.

That doesn’t mean post-debate talking points are irrelevant. As we learned the last time, cable stations have become messaging platforms for delivering pronouncements of behind-the-scenes oligarchs. We will know whether Emperor Obama (or Brennan, or whoever is really running the country) gives tonight’s performance a thumbs-up or thumbs-down within minutes of the MSNBC/CNN roundups.

As usual, I’ll be viewing the debate with Walter Kirn through the lens of a drinking game. We’ll watch the whole event, plus check in on the after-event commentary, beginning at 8:45 pm ET:

For YouTube, click here.

For Rumble, click here.

Or just visit @mtaibbi.

NOTE: The object of a drinking game is to add drama to oft-excruciating TV affairs and also to make light of participants by predicting pre-packaged attack lines. I try to make rules even-handed, which means rules aimed at both candidates’ tendencies. I strongly advise refraining from hard liquor, as a single rule can sometimes be a hospital risk (“The idea…” last time upended some players). I bought a case of Modelo for tonight’s affair, which sounds dull, but I’m anticipating a long night. Walter and I will see you soon. Without further ado, tonight’s rules:

DRINK EVERY TIME:

Harris uses the words felon, extreme, threat to democracy, or for the people.

Trump uses the words communist, socialist, radical or Marxist. Double-shot for tampon.

Harris talks about her experience dealing with predators, scammers, cheaters, perpetrators, or special interests.

Trump invokes the Kamala crime wave or defund the police, or says something like They destroyed San Francisco or You can’t buy a loaf of bread without getting shot. Any story of this sort qualifies (“These Haitians, it’s unbelievable. Who would eat a cat?”). Non-negotiable double-shot for literally third world conditions.

Harris says Let me be clear, I’m talking, or “Not going back.” Take a SMALL SIP ONLY whenever she mentions the middle class. Take a full drink when Donald Trump only cares about himself.

Trump says illegal, sanctuary, Border Czar. Double shot when Harris protests she wasn’t.

Harris cackles. Trump does “stank face” or “pinchy hands.”

Harris mentions the opportunity economy, price gouging or bringing down costs. Double for groceries. If both candidates mention groceries, take an aspirin.

“CHECK, PLEASE!” Drink if Harris runs out of things to say and has to be reminded she still has time left. (Drinking game trivia: this rule was originally written for Joe Biden years ago.)

“BILLIONS AND BILLIONS!” Drink when Trump rattles off a statistic that’s off by a factor of 10x. Double if he tells us how many people were just shot in Chicago and how it was worse than Afghanistan. (He may substitute Philadelphia tonight).

From Harris: sales tax, bipartisan, reproductive freedom, different vision. Drink for any mathematically perfect tautology/redundancy (e.g. deadlines of time). More than three seconds of stoned-looking hesitation is a drink. Strike your companion if you hear joy.

From Trump: so crazy, beautiful, fake, beating the hell, never been anything like it. Drink when he says any national problem was completely eliminated when he was president and complains the media lies its face off about it. You may also drink for take a bullet or the “pull down that chart” story if you feel under-served.

Tune in tonight to the livestream at 8:45 pm for an additional MYSTERY RULE.

IN THE POST-DEBATE COMMENTARY, DRINK WHEN:

Any pundit uses a legal metaphor to describe the Harris performance (“A great closing argument,” “She proved beyond a reasonable doubt tonight,” “Tonight, America is her jury”)

“Move the needle” (if a performance did or did not)

“Trump was incoherent/rambling”

Harris showed she was “calm” or “pragmatic”; “We saw a real leader tonight”

The real opinion of Barack Obama is written on the face of an otherwise evasive David Axelrod; full tumescence of Brian Stelter is detected; Chris Hayes completely agrees with whatever Joy, Rachel, or Jen just said

FINALLY, THE WALTER KIRN RULE:

You must finish your bottle and arm yourself if a technical breakdown or broadcast interruption takes place in the middle of a one-sided debate

Hahaha!
Thanks Matt!

But you forgot..."Unburdened by what has been".

Trump’s debate meltdown was spectacular
Even by his standards, the former president was shockingly incoherent and quick to rage.

There’s a long-standing theory in politics that whoever controls the first 15 minutes of a debate will go on to control the entire evening. That was certainly the case back on June 28, when former President Donald Trump dominated the first presidential debate so completely that President Joe Biden faced immediate calls to drop out of the race.

What a difference a few months can make.

What Americans saw on Tuesday was a Trump who appeared convinced that his second presidential debate would go much like his first — with Trump controlling the floor while his Democratic opponent struggled to mount any defense.

After less than an hour it was clear that Trump had discarded any attempt to challenge Harris on policy, reverting instead to a nonstop stream of name-calling, self-pity and directionless fury.

(Personally, I hope Trump stays out of jail, loses the election, but remains in absolute control of the GOP all the way to 2029, maybe running again for President or promoting Trump Junior for President.)

Trump clearly got rattled in the first 15 minutes and never was able to shake it over the whole debate. All of which made it easier for the TV-ready VP to flip the script on the insult-spouting Trump. Going for the soft underbelly, Harris mocked Trump for “bored” attendees at his rallies and his references to “fictional characters like Hannibal Lecter” and how “windmills cause cancer.

As predictable as the sun rising in the east and certainly to the head-banging frustration of his advisors, the former Celebrity Apprentice host took that bait — and others again and again. Rambling, visibly irritated with the occasional fact-checking from ABC News moderators Linsey Davis and David Muir, and bellowing over everyone on and off the mics, the Trump of the second POTUS debate of 2024 was a clone of the off-the-leash Trump of the first POTUS debate of 2020. The latter debate went off the rails, largely because of Trump’s interruptions, to the point where Biden told him to shut up.

If You Want to Know Who Won the Debate, Watch Fox News the Moment It Ended

By David Mack | Sept 11, 2024, 1:53 AM

https://slate.com/business/2024/09/debate-donald-trump-kamala-harris-w
inner-fox-news.html

Tuning into Fox News following Tuesday’s presidential debate, it was hard to describe the mood. Somber comes to mind—a little like you might find at a funeral, perhaps for a beloved cat consumed by a political boogeyman.

Donald Trump had just spent almost all of his 90-minute debate with Kamala Harris ranting into his microphone in a 180-degree contrast from his last appearance against Joe Biden. If he kept it together for the first little bit, Trump quickly fell into the traps Harris laid for him—about his crowd sizes, his reputation among military chiefs, his standing among world leaders—and the results were grim. To anyone watching who might have forgotten what the Trump years were like, it was a stark reminder.

When the ABC moderators finally wrapped things up and the lights came up on the Fox News panel, the anchors seemed just as rattled as viewers at home. You instantly knew things were bleak when host Jesse Watters tried to insist that there had been no winners. “I don’t think the American people are watching and thinking any of these people won,” Watters stammered out. He then conceded, “This was rough. This was pretty intense at times.”

Brit Hume, the network’s chief political analyst, was starker. “Make no mistake about it: Trump had a bad night,” Hume told the Fox viewers. “This was pretty much her night.” Sounding exasperated, Hume complained that Trump had been repeatedly baited by Harris, leading Trump to relitigate “so many of the old grievances that we had long thought Trump had learned were not winners politically.” Harris, meanwhile, was composed and prepared, Hume said: “She kept her cool.”

“You’re saying she had a good night?” host Bret Baier asked him.

“I’m saying she certainly did,” Hume said sternly.

On Fox News, the strategy delivered after the initial shock passed seemed to be to attack the real villains: Those pesky ABC journalists who had asked follow-up questions and made fact-checks during the debate, such as when they told the American people there was, in fact, no evidence to Trump’s frankly racist claims that the good pets of Springfield, Ohio, were being gobbled up by Haitian migrants.

Soon, a string of Fox News friendly faces was called upon. Looking beaten down, host Sean Hannity insisted the “biggest loser in the debate” was ABC, bashing the network’s journalists, David Muir and Linsey Davis, as “far-left moderators.” Speaking with the air of someone just grateful to be invited on television, Robert F. Kennedy Jr. complained about “the evident bias of the moderators who were fact checking constantly trivialities by President Trump.” Sen. Marco Rubio of Florida called the moderators “an embarrassment to journalism.” Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis told viewers he much preferred the moderating style of CNN’s Jake Tapper and Dana Bush, because “they asked questions” and “they got out of the way.”

Eventually, Trump himself entered the debate spin room—a rare move for him—and began an impromptu press conference of sorts, prompting Hannity to shush RFK Jr. so the viewers could listen in live. But without a mic clearly in front of Trump, the audience at home had to strain to hear him, creating an even more shambolic appearance. Instead of the former president, the Fox mics picked up the sounds of others in the room full of journalists and media figures: “Why wouldn’t you look at her?” “Why not let your performance speak for itself?” Some just audibly snickered at the scene.

When Trump did eventually find his way over to Hannity’s set for the TV equivalent of a post-game massage, he complained it had been “three against one,” but still insisted it had been his “best debate ever.” But visibly sweating and with his hair looking disheveled, he hardly sounded victorious.

And it was the reaction of the Fox hosts that was the most revealing about how the night had gone for Trump. Watters even demonstrated one or two flashes of honesty for his audience; in between defenses, Watters groaned that Trump “had some moments where you were like, ‘Oh, my God! Where going with this?’” Indeed, for those Fox viewers wondering where Trump had led them on Tuesday night, there was one grim answer: “This race just got tighter,” Watters said.

Sellers find out how much money buyers have and then set prices to take it all. If the seller set prices too high? No sales. Set prices too low? The seller left some of the buyer's money on the table, violating the Spirit of Capitalism to make as much money as possible. The traditional way to stop that seller's strategy is for there to be an over-supply forcing sellers to compete on price.

Trump Tells Republicans to Shut Down the Government Over Election Fraud

September 10, 2024

Former President Donald Trump demanded that “If Republicans in the House, and Senate, don’t get absolute assurances on Election Security, THEY SHOULD, IN NO WAY, SHAPE, OR FORM, GO FORWARD WITH A CONTINUING RESOLUTION ON THE BUDGET.”

For days now, the former president — who maintains that the 2020 election was stolen from him — has been promoting unsourced claims of election fraud in 2024 early voting on his social media.

Earlier this week, Trump promoted unsubstantiated claims that Arizona, a key 2024 battleground state, is allowing non-citizens to remain on the state’s voter rolls. He also repeated claims that “20% of the Mail-In Ballots in Pennsylvania are fraudulent.”

“Here we go again!” Trump wrote on Truth Social. “Where is the U.S. Attorney General and FBI to INVESTIGATE? Where is the Pennsylvania Republican Party? We will WIN Pennsylvania by a lot, unless the Dems are allowed to CHEAT. THE RNC MUST ACTIVATE, NOW!!!”

Some Republicans in the House are livid that House Speaker Johnson is even entertaining a funding extension, even with the SAVE Act attached, while others feel that the image of the GOP forcing a government shutdown weeks before the November election would be a boon to Democrats.

Like many of you, I watched the debate tonight. If you haven’t already, now is a great time to do your research on the issues at hand and the stances these candidates take on the topics that matter to you the most. As a voter, I make sure to watch and read everything I can about their proposed policies and plans for this country.

Recently I was made aware that AI of ‘me’ falsely endorsing Donald Trump’s presidential run was posted to his site. It really conjured up my fears around AI, and the dangers of spreading misinformation. It brought me to the conclusion that I need to be very transparent about my actual plans for this election as a voter. The simplest way to combat misinformation is with the truth.

I will be casting my vote for Kamala Harris and Tim Walz in the 2024 Presidential Election. I’m voting for @kamalaharris because she fights for the rights and causes I believe need a warrior to champion them. I think she is a steady-handed, gifted leader and I believe we can accomplish so much more in this country if we are led by calm and not chaos. I was so heartened and impressed by her selection of running mate @timwalz, who has been standing up for LGBTQ+ rights, IVF, and a woman’s right to her own body for decades.

I’ve done my research, and I’ve made my choice. Your research is all yours to do, and the choice is yours to make. I also want to say, especially to first time voters: Remember that in order to vote, you have to be registered! I also find it’s much easier to vote early. I’ll link where to register and find early voting dates and info in my story.

With love and hope,

Trump is currently up 3.6+ in Battleground States from where he was in 2020.

Trump is currently up 6.9+ in the meaningless Popular Vote from where he was in 2020.

Trump's favorability rating is currently 7.9+ higher than it was in 2020.

Who would have guessed that Trump and JD Vance are unapologetic lying sacks of shit? Certainly not the "undecided" voters. As for Trump voters, being a sack of shit is how they got where they are, and how they achieved their level of "success".

A quarter of Republicans think Trump should seize power even if he loses

If the 2024 presidential election were held today, it’s not clear who would win. Vice President Kamala Harris has a slight national advantage, according to The Washington Post’s average of polls, but margins in swing states are uniformly narrow. If the polls are overestimating Harris’s support, Donald Trump will return to the White House. If they are underestimating her support, she’ll be the next president.

Unless, of course, there’s some successful, anti-democratic effort to subvert her victory. An effort that about a quarter of Republicans and 1 in 7 Americans overall think should be undertaken in the event that Trump loses.
https://www.prri.org/research/one-leader-under-god-the-connection-betw

That’s the determination of new national polling from PRRI. But before we dig into that, it’s useful to look at a different newly released poll, this one from the Associated Press and its partners at NORC and USAFacts.
https://apnews.com/article/trump-harris-election-2024-misinformation-4
51b4f6ebc4c82ac941521b9059500d8

In that poll, Americans were asked what information sources they trusted when it came to accurately reporting the results of the presidential election. The source that engendered the most trust (here reflecting the percentage of people saying they had at least a moderate amount of trust) was the certified results produced by government agencies. Local news sources (television and newspapers) were the next most trusted, followed by national news outlets. The candidates and their campaigns were among the least trusted — particularly Trump’s campaign.

Except that, among Republicans, Trump and his campaign were the most trusted source of election information. And by a healthy margin.

What’s important about that chart, though, isn’t simply that Trump is viewed as the most trustworthy source of information about the election. It’s that this is in part because the other sources of information are given so little trust (particularly when compared with Democrats). It’s not that trust is generally high among Republicans, with Trump emerging as the most confidence-inspiring. It’s that trust is broadly low, except in Trump.

This is an outcome Trump has been specifically working toward. Injecting skepticism into even obviously objective presentations and elevating doubt about institutions — exaggerated or not — reinforces his position as the sole trustworthy authority to his supporters.

It is a foundational element of authoritarian leadership.

Which brings us back to that PRRI poll. In it, Americans were presented with a number of questions aimed specifically at measuring authoritarian sympathies. One measure, what the researchers refer to as the “Right-Wing Authoritarianism Scale” (RWAS), measured respondents’ agreement with four statements:

• “The only way our country can get through the crisis ahead is to get back to our traditional values, put some tough leaders in power, and silence the troublemakers spreading bad ideas.

• “Our country will be destroyed someday if we do not smash the perversions eating away at our moral fiber and traditional beliefs.

• “What our country really needs is a strong, determined leader who will crush evil, and take us back to our true path.

• “Our country will be great if we honor the ways of our forefathers, do what the authorities tell us to do, and get rid of the ‘rotten apples’ who are ruining everything.”

Those who completely or mostly agreed with most or all of the statements were rated as having high scores. A parallel measure, referred to as the “Child-Rearing Authoritarianism Scale,” was evaluated in a similar way.

In each case, about 4 in 10 Americans received high scores. But, in each case, those scores were higher among Republicans. They were sharply higher among Republicans who view Trump favorably, a group that makes up most of the party. Three-quarters of Trump-supporting Republicans scored high on the RWAS measurement.

PRRI also presented respondents with specific situations aimed at measuring their willingness to set aside democratic processes. About a quarter of Republicans said that Americans needed to “ensure the rightful leader takes office” if 2024 is “compromised by voter fraud” — including by taking violent actions. The same percentage said that Trump should “do whatever it takes” to become president if he isn’t confirmed as the winner in November.

The predicate for that first question — that the election is compromised by voter fraud — should be considered in light of the AP poll responses. Trump spent the months after losing in 2020 insisting that he had won; he has spent the years since insisting that somehow-undetected rampant fraud cost him victory. And this is the most trusted source for election information among Republicans.

New polling from the Pew Research Center, incidentally, asked Americans to evaluate Trump’s response to 2020. Nearly half said that Trump broke the law in attempting to retain power; a majority said that he had done at least something wrong.
https://www.pewresearch.org/politics/2024/09/09/in-tied-presidential-r
ace-harris-and-trump-have-contrasting-strengths-weaknesses
/

A majority of Trump supporters said that he hadn’t done anything wrong at all.

Pew also asked people to evaluate possible actions that their preferred presidential candidates might take if elected. Supporters of both Harris and Trump thought it was acceptable for their preferred candidate to take executive actions if elected to get around congressional inaction. But Trump supporters were far more likely than Harris supporters to say that it was acceptable for their preferred candidate to launch targeted political prosecutions, to fire disloyal federal workers, or to pardon friends and family accused of crimes.

Trump, of course, has promised to fire federal officials and launch criminal probes of political opponents — including those elections officials who he suggests might engage in “fraud.”

All of these numbers have a consistent theme: Many Republicans, particularly those who like Trump, accept and support his authoritarian tendencies. That holds even as Trump’s articulation of his second-term plans tend more overtly in that direction.

6ixStringJack, you would have trouble proving you are not a Nazi. So would Trump. The Nazi strategy was to falsely accuse, then jail, their opposition. Obviously, the Nazis didn't admit they were lying about the opposition, but then neither does Trump explain the real purpose of his fabrications and misrepresentations:

With just days to go before his first and likely only debate against Vice President Kamala Harris, former President Donald Trump posted a warning on his social media site threatening to jail those “involved in unscrupulous behavior” this election, which he said would be under intense scrutiny.

“WHEN I WIN, those people that CHEATED will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the Law, which will include long term prison sentences so that this Depravity of Justice does not happen again,” Trump wrote late Saturday, sowing doubt once more about the integrity of the election, even though cheating is incredibly rare.

“Please beware,” he went on, “that this legal exposure extends to Lawyers, Political Operatives, Donors, Illegal Voters, & Corrupt Election Officials. Those involved in unscrupulous behavior will be sought out, caught, and prosecuted at levels, unfortunately, never seen before in our Country."

Trump's message represents his latest threat to use the office of the presidency to exact retribution if he wins a second term. There is no evidence of the kind of fraud he continues to insist marred the 2020 election; in fact, dozens of courts, Republican state officials and his own administration have said he lost fairly.

On Tuesday, Trump proved himself to have less mental stability than a Nazi:

Over the course of debate, Trump defended the violent mob that had attacked the Capitol. He insisted that the 2020 election had been stolen from him. He relitigated his slander of the Central Park Five. He defended his decision to invite the Taliban to Camp David and invoked Hungary’s authoritarian leader, Viktor Orbán, as a character witness. He couldn’t bring himself to say that he hopes Ukraine will win its war against Russia, even when pressed. And he spent valuable time emphatically insisting that the multiple indictments against him are “fake cases.”

But that’s not all. Trump savaged people he had appointed to his administration who have since broken with him. He repeated his claim that Harris wasn’t Black. And then there was the pièce de résistance: Trump spreading the conspiracy theory, weird even by his standards, that in Springfield, Ohio, Haitian migrants are abducting and devouring their neighbors’ pets. “They’re eating the dogs!” he roared. “The people that came in—they’re eating the cats!” And he still couldn’t stop himself. When one of the moderators, ABC’s David Muir, rebutted Trump’s claim, the former president said, “I’ve seen people on television! People on television say, ‘My dog was taken and used for food!’”

Trump is unstable enough to round up all aliens and secretly slaughter them because it is cheaper and quicker than trials and deportation. Concentration camps and crematoriums will pop into Trump's thinking about a final solution to the illegal migrants problem.
