I believe in solving problems, not sharing them.

I know that Auraptor and Hero will want the Dems to vanish. Taking that out of the discussion, what do YOU think the Dems should do, and in what approximate order?

Reality sucks. Especially when it contradicts our cherished ideas.

I'd be content if the more conservative members of their party pushed for a more moderate leadership. Granted, I don't expect them to pick a conservative Democratic leadership (although, that would be nice), but avoiding personalities from the far-left would be a welcomed improvement (and probably the best I can hope for).

Speaking as a European, it still surprises me just how conservative America is. I mean, when I was a kid I saw you guys as the country of progression, leading the way for others to follow. It was a bit of a shock finding out that in a lot of areas you're actually way behind us!

I had another surprise last night when I found out you just elected your first Muslim congressman. I mean, even Ireland has elected Muslims before now! Okay, the first Muslim TD was elected in the early 90's, but we're Ireland and we still got there before you guys!

I want them to get us out of Iraq in the best, fastest way possible, and then I want them to raise taxes. Yep, you read correctly; I want to pay more tax. And I want more saftey nets for the peeps that got screwed by the neoconmen in this country, and I want the deficit to be reduced. And breakfast programs for schoolkids.
Then I want torture to be illegal.
Then I want the Patriot act axed.
Then I want government streamlined.

*Note: where I work we have to ID peeps for cough medication. Like kids wont breathe dust-off or sniff contact cement of whatever thier little minds come up with...like meth labs will disappear when buying the raw materials becomes a little more difficult...it's another waste of taxpayer money, and another agency that doesn't need to exist. Just one example.

Keep the Shiny side up

I'd like them to have the sense to know that they're probably going to be running the government in 2 years, and to not waste the time between now and then launching a myriad of investigations, hearings, special prosecutors, search-and-destroy missions, etc.

I got no issue with them looking at real problems of malfiesence, but I'm afraid they're going to want to go back and second-guess every action and decision of the past six years, not because it was illegal, but because they didn't agree with it.

1. Raise the minimum wage.
2. Roll back tax cuts for wealthiest 1%.
3. Investigate war profiteering (e.g., Halliburton overcharging for serving spoiled rotten food to the troops, reconstruction fraud).
4. Negotiate Medicare drug prices.
5. Reduce the trade deficit and close tax loopholes for companies that outsource American jobs.
6. Increase funding for higher education.
7. Get the troops off the streets in Iraq, redefine their mission as something than can be achieved without patrolling streets as big slow moving targets.
8. Come up with a plan to make health care affordable. Not free, not nationalized, not (gasp!) socialized, just affordable.
9. Make tough new penalties for people who hire illegal immigrants, and relax legal immigration policies.
10. Yeah, investigate intelligence manipulation, torture policies, and anti-constitutional warrantless spying by Bushco, and take appropriate action, whether it be censure or impeachment, or prosecution for war crimes after leaving office.
11. Implement all 9/11 commission recommendations, and finally do a proper investigation.
12. Get Bin Laden.

Plus:

13. Fund Joss on a Firely sequel. For the good of America.
They can do that in 2 years, right?

After 12 years of saying how they could do things better it's time to step up to the plate (to a certain degree). It's much easier to point out flaws then to actually strive to make real changes. It's like our Liberals here who fail to see the irony of incessantly attacking the minority Conservative Government over their clean air act when all they did for 13 years in power was pay the environment lip service.
I think it will be refreshing for certain members of this forum to switch roles. Now Auraptor and Hero get to pick apart the Dem's policies and Rue, SignyM, Righteous, Soupcatcher, and yourself among other's, can lead the D - fence.

I'm not gonna defend shit. I wanna see something from them, or I'll be right there takin' my shots. I don't care who's in office, I just wanna see a certain lack-of-needless-death attributed to our fearless leaders.

We can bicker about taxes and education till judgement day, but LIFE, the lives of our troops, of the innocents, that's MY priority. That won't wait, and can't be fixed or replaced. If they have no answers for Iraq, they're as useless as the Neo-Con trash in there now.

RIGHTEOUS9

I want investigations.

Part of me doesn't like the idea though. Part of me thinks that the democrats could get more done if they gave Bush a chance to salvage his legacy by doing some good...that if they didn't put the heat on him they could trade that good will for bipartisanship on legislation, but...

if there were laws broken by this President...if the Constitution itself was ignored by this man, and I thik it has been, I think it is far more harmful for our country to continue to let these things stay buried from the public and go unprosecuted.

I think it is damaging long-term to continue to foster an environment where our politicians can get away with murder. I don't want my democratic congressmen making deals in Washington so that when what goes around comes around they get a get-out-of-jail free card themselves.

Investigations, quite frankly, are the inconvenient thing for democrats. I think it could make them a congress of no other accomplishments than "cleaning up" Washington. I'm not sure how confident the public will be in such a clean up. We've been inundated with the idea that both parties are corrupt. And at some point or other both parties have been.

I will trust them more if they go after corruption, instead of letting it slide. I don't know if this would restore the public's faith in our government or jade it further...but its better to have a jaded public that doesn't believe in the system than to have a system that shouldn't be believed in, I think.

I assure you, I want a congress that is clean, and I don't care what jersey they wear. I want no less oversight for dems than I want for republicans. It is our right and our responsibility as Citizens of this nation to have and to use that oversight. I won't tolerate a corrupt democrat any more than a corrupt republican, and I won't tolerate it(any more than I have to) if they don't roll back all of the secrecy in Washington now that they are in charge.

A tale of two Comrade Cows:

CHRISTIAN: You have two cows. You keep one and give one to your neighbor.

SOCIALIST: You have two cows. The government takes one and gives it to your neighbor.

REPUBLICAN: You have two cows. Your neighbor has none. So what?

DEMOCRAT: You have two cows. Your neighbor has none. You feel guilty for being successful. You vote people into office who tax your cows, forcing you to sell one to raise money to pay the tax.The people you voted for then take the tax money and buy a cow and give it to your neighbor. You feel righteous.

COMMUNIST: You have two cows. The government seizes both and provides you with milk.

FASCIST: You have two cows. The government seizes both and sells you the milk. You join the underground and start a campaign of sabotage.

MICROSOFT: You buy the rights to two cows. You 'upgrade' them until they're bloated, unproductive and will only survive on MicrosoftFeed (tm). The milk they give can only be drunk from MicrosoftCups (tm) - Annoyingly, they keep getting a virus and dying.

APPLE: You have two cows. They're translucent! You can see all the guts and stuff. The cows cost more than other cows, but goddamn if they aren't the best-looking cows around.

DEMOCRACY, AMERICAN STYLE: You have two cows. The government taxes you to the point you have to sell both to support a man in a foreign country who has only one cow, which was a gift from your government.

BUREAUCRACY, AMERICAN STYLE: You have two cows. The government takes them both, shoots one, milks the other, pays you for the milk, then pours the milk down the drain.

CAPITALISM, AMERICAN STYLE: You have two cows, but the milkmaid charges too much to milk them. You sell both cows, lay off the milkmaid, and move to mexico, where you can buy 100 cows and 20 milkmaids with the money and export it back to the States.

ANARCHY: You have two cows. Either you sell the milk at a fair price or your neighbors try to kill you and take your cows

POLITICAL CORRECTNESS: You are associated with (the concept of "ownership" is a symbol of the phallo-centric, war mongering intolerant past) two differently-aged (but no less valuable to society) bovines of non-specified gender.

AMERICAN CORPORATION: You have two cows. You sell one, and force the other to produce the milk of four cows. You are surprised when the cow drops dead.

FRENCH CORPORATION: You have two cows. You go on strike because you want three cows.

JAPANESE CORPORATION: You have two cows. You redesign them so they are an eleventh the size of an ordinary cow and produce twenty times the milk.

GERMAN CORPORATION: You have two cows. You re-engineer them so they live for 100 years, eat once a month and milk themselves.

ITALIAN CORPORATION: You have two cows but you don't know where they are. You break for lunch.

RUSSIAN CORPORATION: You have two cows. You count them and learn you have five cows. You count them again and learn you have 42 cows. You count them again and learn you have 12 cows. You stop counting cows and open another bottle of vodka.

MEXICAN CORPORATION: You think you have two cows, but you're not sure where they are. You'll look for them tomorrow.

SWISS CORPORATION: You have 5000 cows, none of which belongs to you. You charge for storing them for others.

BRAZILIAN CORPORATION: You have two cows. You enter into a partnership with an American corporation. Soon you have 1000 cows and the American corporation declares bankruptcy.

INDIAN CORPORATION: You have two cows. You worship them.

TALIBAN ORGANIZATION: You have two cows. You load them up with explosives and herd them onto your neighbor's property where you blow them up. Your neighbor dies. You starve to death.

FREE AGENT: You have two cows. Despite the constant attention you pay them, there are frequent dry spells during which they don't give milk.

PINK SLIPPER: You have two cows. Suddenly they become a liability and you're forced to sell them on Ebay to pay your exorbitant rent.

DOT-COMMER: You have two cows. A week later you have two thousand cows. A week later you have none.

ENTREPRENEUR: You have two cows. You develop and launch tucows.com.

VENTURE CAPITALIST: You have two cows. You give them to the entrepreneur (see above).

CEO: You think you have two cows. You actually have two sheep, but no one's got the guts to tell you.

ANGEL INVESTOR: You have two cows. You give one to a start-up. The cow produces no milk. You exercise your exit option and get your cow back.

START-UP: You have two cows; your press release describes that as an IPO fast track.

START-UP II v2: You have two cows and 20 million in funding. publicly you promise 50 million gallons a year within two years, but privately you're still debating where the udders are and what they do.

DESIGNER: You have two cows. You move the udders to the side and paint them fluorescent yellow, hoping that will make the milking process more intuitive and fun.

PROGRAMMER: You have two cows. One keeps tipping over, yet nobody is pushing it. The other fails to yield any milk, despite being in good health. You spend nearly every waking minute trying to determine what is wrong with your cows and fixing them.

FILE SHARERS: You have two cows. You share clones of them with all the other herders in the pasture. The courts order the pasture closed for violating the copyright laws.

3D ARTISTS: We make our cows from scratch. They do what we want.

OPEN SOURCE: You have two cows. You invite other herders to improve your cows. You have two cows that are better than before.

GEORGE W. BUSH: One of your daddy's friends gives you two cows ...

NATIVE AMERICAN: You don't own two cows.

BUDDHIST: You are two cows.

ZEN: There are no cows.

SURREALISM: You have two giraffes. The government requires you to take harmonica lessons.

More insane ramblings by the people who brought you beeeer milkshakes!

SERGEANTX

I'll give two answers. First the pragmatic one,

I don't have any confidence that the modern Democratic party will do anything I want, so I don't want them to do anything. If they like, they can propose all kinds of irrelevant nonsense (minimum wage, socialized this and that, etc, etc,...) that Bush can then veto. That'll work.

I once saw a fantastic speech by George Will on the wonderful blessings of gridlock. It's the most effective firewall against bad government. It's the most realist hope for our future.

Now, if we're talking fantasy...

I'd have the Dems repeal the Patriot Act, along with all the other fascist tweaks installed by Bush and company. They'd dismantle the Homeland Insecurity gestapo and open up our borders in a way appropriate to a country that pretends to love freedom. They'd get the hell out of Iraq after at least some reasonable attempt to pay for damages. They'd announce that we are no longer supporting corporate adventures in the middle east, so multinationals be warned - we're not your security thugs anymore. They'd tell the Muslim nations of that region that we won't be bothering them anymore. "But don't ask us for any favors and don't fuck with us or will nuke you into oblivion." I got more, but the complete impossibility of any of this happening is depressing...

I would like to see the government do well, regardless of which party is in charge.

Unfortunately, I don't see the Democrats helping Bush in the least. The reason why? Because, they're already thinking ahead to 2008, and they don't want even a single Republican to have anything to hang his/her hat on.

And with the major media as their willing allies, it won't be so hard to imagine the Democrats taking the White House. (Unless they do something really stupid -- like putting another McGovern or Dukakis liberal on the ticket.)

As I once heard someone say... A ship could go down at sea with a hundred people on it. Bush could personally dive into the water and save 99 of them, and the headlines across the country would read: Bush lets man drown!!

Realistically ?

I want Conyers as speaker, and the party to finally find some testicular fortitude and cut Pelosi out, while sending Howard Dean to political siberia for this "reconciliation" crap.

I do NOT want todays kids going through this nightmare again (see other post) and thus while these monsters are on the floor writhing, I want our so-called reps to put the boot in and FINISH THE JOB!

To hell with playing nicey-nice pattycake, eliminate the primary threat, follow up with RICO and demolish the opposition (hell, steal Karl Rove's playbook if you have to) utterly, and then have the decency to fall on your swords for being half the problem yourselves...

Meh, I can dream, can't I ?

Both parties need to go, I can put up with these pansies a while yet, but the GOP must suffer the consequences of what they have done, and RICO would be a good start.

We need a good, solid purge, and a clean slate to actually rebuild this country, and it's not gonna happen with the baggage both parties are draggin, it just ain't.

I think that's the best thing I've read all day.

Now, on to what I want the Dems to do...

I want the Democrats to do (drumroll, please) something positively productive that doesn't in any way rape the American people or the Constitution. Either that, or I want them to single-handedly destroy the political parties we have so we can start from scratch.

But, we are talking about politicians here, so my realistic goal for the Democratic party is to do something - anything, really. It doesn't have to be positive, or productive. And, maybe if they screw up (or all of Congress and the White House screws up), then the American people can call for the destruction of the political system as it stands now.

Like that's gonna happen.

America certainly has traveled its own path in the short 215+ yrs of existance. 'Progression' has come to mean different things to different people today. Politically, some former socialist have come to use the word "progrssive" to hide what they really are. In a nation founded on its rugged individualism and independent thought, such political views aren't taken to too kindly in many parts of the country.

Political views aside, I expect the Dems to do what they've carried on about for the last 6 years. Make an already great economy even better, lower the 4.4% unmeployment rate , and conduct the war on Islamic Jihadism and the war in Iraq " smarter and better ". What ever the heck that's suppose to mean.

People love a happy ending. So every episode, I will explain once again that I don't like people. And then Mal will shoot someone. Someone we like. And their puppy. - Joss

I mainly want Congress to do some oversight. Any oversight. They can start small. Let's start with Iraq reconstruction contracts.

Sure, I'd love it if the new Congress starting rolling back the more regressive crap this administration has rammed through the Republican Congress but I don't see that happening. The margin they have won't give them much room to move anyway so I don't expect much out of them in terms of legislation.

I think you highlight a key difference between the supporters of the Republican party and the more lefty types on the board. For me, it's not Democrats uber alles. If they do something I think is stupid, I'll call them on it. The other side is much more "cult of personality"ish. Look how willing they are to defend key personalities to the death rather than admit they've ever made a mistake.

actually America is not as conservative as most some would like for you to think, America is mostly a middle of the road country, it not far to left and its not far to the right, what you have to understand is that for the past 7 years we've had major voter fraud going on in the country, that was masterminded by Rep's in the current administration Bush and Co. actually Gore won the 2000, election and if there had not been wide spead cheating none of the things happening now would have gone on. Kerry as patheic as he was was also elected in 2004 but because of the cheating he didn't win, not to mention all of the congressional and Senate elections that were also fraudulant.

It's possible he could be impeached without being removed. It would amount to an uber-censure, a political punishment rather than a legal one. While part of me likes the idea, even if only as revenge for Clinton and that whole circus, it might send the wrong message, i.e., "you did all the crap we accused you of, but we'll be nice and let you stick around anyway cause we're all just playing gotcha in prep for '08."

Tried for war crimes and thrown in prison would be prefereable, but I just don't think that will happen.

Actually, I'm quite curious to see what will happen when the rubber meets the road. We all know (or at least, I hope we do) that it's way easier to criticize and Monday-morning-quarterback than it is to actually be proactive. I don't want the Dems to govern badly--I just want people to be realistic. My soapbox is getting pretty worn at this point, but it can't be as simple as Republicans=pure-evil and Democrats=Jesus.

I grew up seeing America as progressive, sort of Liberal, but with Conservative restraints.

Get too liberal OR too conservative, and things go wacky. And America has gone too conservative in the last 20 years, but not a 'good' conservative, a radical conservative. Kind of opposite the road that leads to a 'Demolition Man' world. But it's swingin' back- just hope not too far in the OTHER direction, or China will take us over, heh heh.

My take anyway Chrisisall

Well as far as I can see if we take American politics by the standards of other nations you've got the Far Right and the Right with Moderates left of the Democrates.

Our Right wing are anti guns and pro national health service if that helps any to illustrate my point.

id just like for the Dems to be something other than the smoke and mirrors, good cop/bad cop partner of the republicans and the globalist monopoly that controlls our political processes; otherwise the Democrats are just as dangerous as the neocon republican majority was, if not more so..since we've now been given the illusion that that the deck has been re-stacked... meanwhile the same fraudulant war on terror is being waged against American citizens. hopefully some of the true conservatives and moderates will wake up from their partisan brain draining and realize that the agenda doesnt change just cause you replace a R with a D; the central banks are still pushing the same global government agenda, regardless of which puppet is placed on the throne(s).

I had another surprise last night when I found out you just elected your first Muslim congressman. I mean, even Ireland has elected Muslims before now! Okay, the first Muslim TD was elected in the early 90's, but we're Ireland and we still got there before you guys!

]

You say that as if it's something to be proud of. It really isn't. Not because the guy's a Muslim, but because it shouldn't matter what religion a person is when it comes to electing them as a representative of the people. I remember in high school they still, to this day, make a big deal out of the fact the JFK was a Catholic. Whoopty do. It's not like the Pope controlled the US because a Catholic was president.

Also, I want looser gun restrictions (I'm tired of 2nd Ammendment violations)
More states to have the death penalty
Anti-Abortion laws repealed
Laws banning gay marriage repealed
Drinking age lowered to 16
Driving age raised to 18 (it's necessary that both of these happen together)

There are others and I'm at work, I'll add them later.

Oh, and I have a question for all you extreme leftists out there (and judging by the responses on this thread, there are quite a few); why is it if a Demoncrat gets elected, you overcame and won the election, but when a Repuglican gets elected, there had to be a manipulation of the votes and they cheated? Get your head out of your ass. Bush won the last two elections fair and square, his opposition just felt the need to cast doubt on his win to make the sheep (that's you) think his whole administration is based on a lie.

Lying to a grand jury is illegal. Standing up to Islamic terrorism isn't illegal. No grounds for impeachment of Bush. So sorry.

so in hindsight..Bush didnt lie when he swore on the Holy Bible to uphold the constitution? maybe youve never seen the quote from a white house aide when Bush called it a "goddamn piece of paper", in response to certain patriot act provisions.. in Bushs case it doesnt have to come straight from the horses mouth to see the intent of his policies. i mean... i shouldnt have to list the paradox that exists between the constitution/bill of rights, and patriot acts 1 & 2 and detainee bill; the two philosophically exist dichotomously of one another, and to pervert and undermine the constitution in such a way is amountable to treason- which is more then enough grounds for impeachment. IMO the problem is that too many Americans still believe the official LIE that was 9.11, and in doing so have given into the fear mongering of criminals and mobsters who hate the constitution and see it as an obstacle to a corporo=fascist global UN type government. its for this reason that i dont give Bush credit for being strong against Islamic "fascism"; thats hypocritical to me, when he and his washington colleagues embody corporate American fascism, which is a far greater threat to the global populace

we must just disagree on which fascism is more threatening to us as individuals. Abe Lincoln once said
Quote:

"America will never be destroyed from the outside. If we falter and lose our freedoms, it will be because we destroyed ourselves."
i think ole' Abe new a thing or two about how a republic works...

Americans are now indebted to a central bank, which enforces through the IRS an illegal income tax which is unconstitutional... yet Bush has never once mentioned the Fed as a threat; in fact he takes his orders from them and their CFR, trilateral crony henchmen underlings. i see how the banks and corporations have enslaved us and undermined our sovereignty and individual liberties, and the progression of a big brother police state; but its not crazed Muslims doing it, its capitalist westerners!

just consider the implications, if every incident of terrorism in the last 15 yrs... WTC1, Oklahoma Federal building, TWA 800, 9.11, were proven to be government orchestrations for black ops, shadowy political/financial gain; we might begin to see more clearly a distinct sub-set of benefactors with the real motives for murder and chaos

DREAMTROVE

I would truly like the democrats to put on the breaks, and focus on breaking and stopping the Bush agenda, and reversing some of the recent disasterously bad legislation like the USAPATRIOT Act., domestic wiretaps, and the dumb border fence idea.

What I'm afraid they'll really do is ignore the progress of the disasterous Bush agenda, let it grow and become permanent, while pursuing their own disasterously bad agenda. The best way to prevent them from doing this is to fire Nancy Pelosi, the disaster in chief, immediately, and replace her with a sane house democrat like Murtha, or I'm sure there are probable about 20 people any of us could name who would be common sense type of people, and wouldn't be hell's agenda monkey.

I suppose from a republican perspective, I should be glad Nancy Pelosi is in charge, because she's the best bet the democrats have of screwing up their '08 chances.

But from an American perspective, I want the democrats to do the right thing, and repair the damage that's been done, rather than do more damage. It would also help win the hearts and minds of the people.

Auraptor- Going to war on false premises is illegal. I don't care that Bush f*cked over the entire world (well, I DO care but mainly because it makes our existance so much more difficult) but I DO care that he f*cked oer the USA. You should too.

IRAQ HAD NOTHING TO DO WITH FUNDAMENTAL ISLAMIC TERRORISM- at least, not until we got involved.
