This is from BBC Ceefax, dated Wednesday 27th October, 2004.

Quote:

Scientists have discovered a new and tiny species of human that lived in Indonesia at the same time our own ancestors were colonising the world.

The new species - dubbed "the Hobbit" due to its small size - lived on Flores island until at least 12,000 years ago.

The fact that the little people feature in the legends of modern Flores islanders suggests that we might have to take tales of Bigfoot and the Yeti more seriously.

Details of the sensational find are described in the journal Nature.

I'm planning on placing some web links here as well. I thought this would help cheer some people up after Bush's re-election.

Thank you!!!

(If this somehow turns into a political discussion, I'm gonna shoot somebody. Possibly myself.)

Myths of "little people" are also widespread across northern Europe. I've never heard of the Flores Islanders' myths; are their little ones described as being subterranean?

If so, it raises an interesting parallel that likely means something, though I'm not quite sure what.

well I'll worry if they find a ring with an inscription on it. It is kinda funny and yet odd to call them hobbits though.

While not fully related, I read an aticle today in the paper which shed some new light on Neanderthals, and their relationship to humans. Seems we both evolved from an earlier hominind, and co-existed , for a time, before they became extinct. Refined DNA tests are telling us more about our relatives. It was kinda interesting.

If you're trying to say Neanderthals were " just humans" but who suffered from ricketts, don't bother. That's a sad , pathetic lie told by Creationist who want to dismiss any and all evidence that the world isn't only 6,000 yrs old.

Some evidence I've seen even suggests that Neaderthals were more intelligent than Homo Spaiens.

For instance they may have been able to spell on internet forums even late at night after several beers. I know I bloody well can't.

Oh, I'm well aware of this clown. Kent Hovind. This guy is all manner of screwed up in the head, and he lies more than a used car salesman. ( Sorry for all you used car salespersons out there ) He may put on a good show, but that's all it is. All show, no substance.

They probably had slightly bigger brains than modern humans but their tools were less sophisticated than those of the Cro-Magnon (basically modern humans) that suplanted them so it's something of a toss up.

I remember hearing somewhere that Neanders, because of the structural lay out of their necks, wouldn't be able to vocalize like humans do. I forget the specifics, but the sum of it all was that they didn't have the ability to commuicate complex concepts as their homosapien cousins. This handicapped their efforts to compete with humans, and ended up costing them in the end.

Ooops. My bad. Since you replied to my quote about Neanders, that's who I thought you were talking about when you referred to " them " , and not the Hobbit folk. Confusion resolved.

More recent evidence shows a well developed vocal and auditory apparatus for Neanderthals so they were probably quite capable of a more or less normal modern human range of speach. Check the wikipedia article for a decent overview http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Neanderthal probably somewhat inacurate on the edges and of course there are a number of areas where the concensus thinking changes frequently based on the most recent investigations most particularly the interbreeding vs suplanting debate.

The link Rue posted has it; here is a quote, "This is just one of four separate research teams that have recently published evidence indicating concluding that the Flores hominid is far more likely to be a small-bodied modern human suffering from a microcephaly than a new species derived from Homo erectus, as was claimed in the original Nature paper." (sic. Emphasis mine.)

It was commonly believed in the not too distant past that H. Neanderthal had an inferior voicebox compared to modern humans. Recent evidence suggests otherwise is all. Twenty years or so ago you would have been in step with the majority thinking.

I'm a bit confused at your question. Do you want me to give my opinion of evolution of life here on Earth, the origins of the Cosmos, the history of MAN'S evolution....? I was unaware that I was proposing any 'absolute truth', so I am at a loss as to how to reply.

Perhaps you could start another thread on such issues, rather than veer too far off course in this one. Just my opinion.

The latest proposal on Neaders and Cro-Magnon is that there was some interbreeding because the Neaders are speculated to be the source of the "big brain" variant of the brain-size gene.

AURaptor- i didnt think my question was too difficult.. but ill narrow it down to my point: between neanderthal and the 'hobbit', i cant help but notice a lot of you around here just presuppose a lot of evolutionary steps to have occurred to bring mankind to our current state of being. i have a problem accepting my great great uncle as a primate, and even longer before that a chunk of primordial ooze "millions, if not billions of years ago".. and before that an inanimate* rock. that amount of time is incomprehendable, and almost certainly impossible to diagnose scientifically with our current methods. i just wanna see the proof, the hard science, that shows conclusively the progression of mankind, through the various stages of bacteria 'billions of years ago' to lesser humaniod bi-pedal creatures to human beings today.

if its so rediculous that God created man and all these other things, then why is it not equally rediculous that everything (at one point) came from nothing? the big bang and all the matter in the universe came from nowhere before it manifested... and man actually came from a rock... thats the evolutionist theory, i just wanna know if you believe that?

Anti, don't bother going down that slope with these jokers. I don't believe god made us, nor do I believe in evolution as taught. I think there is a different process at work here. The numbers don't add up for evolution and the big bang stuff. And there is no proof for God. Something from nothing? Sounds ridiculous in my brain. I'm happy to leave it at..."We don't know".

Proof? Try studying the topic. I have. I'm a huge Paleontology buff. Not specifically human evolution, ( my interest lie more specifically in the Mesozoic era ), but the same concepts apply. To understand it all, it takes a bit of understanding what it takes for a fossil to even form. It's a pretty rare event. But clearly, it does happen. If we don't have a specimen from EVERY living creature that has ever lived, it doesn't mean they didn't exist. It simply means we've not found any of their remains, or , they have all eroded. Not only does that happen, we should expect that to happen, based on the processes involved with fossilization. In short, a critter's got to die in the right place, under the right conditions, and not be disturbed for the right amount of time.

The evidence for the Big Bang is out there as well. It's a seperate issue from biological evolution here on Earth. Yes, one must have occured in order for the other to have taken place, but you're dealing with a vastly different areas of study.

For the sake of arguemnt, I prefer to removed God from the equation. Why ? Becasue I don't believe God is a prankster. The evidence is there, whether God exists or doesn't , is irrelevent. Understand my meaning on this matter. Just as a criminal case, it is the evidence which we DO have that is required to build a strong case. We can't easily dismiss something when it doesn't fit into the other evidence we've collected. We must take into account all the variables. And for that reason, I accept the evidence for evolution. I accept a scientific, rational explanation for it all, rather than 'magic'.

Evolution does not demand or deny the existance of God.

She was, then she wasn't, and now she is again - a different kind of people. YEEE HAAAA !

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The tiny woman dubbed the Hobbit who lived 18,000 years ago on a remote Indonesian island deserves to be deemed a new human species and not a deformed modern human as skeptics assert, researchers said on Monday.

In the latest salvo in a heated scientific shootout, an international team led by Florida State University anthropologist Dean Falk compared the Hobbit's skull to those of nine people with microcephaly, a rare condition in which the head is abnormally small due to improper brain development.

They concluded the 3-foot-tall (1-meter) adult woman had a highly evolved brain, unlike that of a microcephalic person, confirming she belongs to the proposed extinct species Homo floresiensis, closely related to modern Homo sapiens.

Hello,

Does it matter if we have a group of 'diseased' short people, or a group of 'non-diseased' short people?

I mean, aren't we still dealing with a community of short people? Short people with little bitty tools and a different lifestyle? Isn't that cool no matter what made them short?
