Rue,

I was looking more at the big picture. China balanced by South Korea, Japan, and the U.S. in the six party talks (who knows which way Russia will go).
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Six-party_talks

And China balanced by the other members of the UN Security Council.

The fact that China has voiced their support of some sanctions is a positive step to ensuring the six party talks continue to be successful. It will also make it harder for China to veto any UN endorsed sanctions which may be forthcoming.

Posting to stir stuff up.

OK, get it straight - read my post through a few times if you have to. I unequivocally advocate doing nothing over any act of war.

My point is simply that without the willingness to use force to make something happen, you have left the decision up to others. They will do what they want to do. Nuclear nonproliferation is not realistic because it makes more sense to allow everyone to have weapons than it does to apply an absolute ultimatum to prevent them from doing so.

PirateNews -

Stop with the Rumsfeld stuff already. These light water reactors were to be supplied to North Korea based on the Agreed Framework specifically because they are not capable of being used to produce weapons material. This has zero relevance to the weapons issue.

It's okay to leave them to die.

BDN,
But China is the linchpin for any talks. If China makes NK sit down and talk, it will. If China doesn't, it won't. And China is working on its own agenda. If and when it sees fit it will exert itself on its behalf w/ regard to NK. The US is a passenger on this trip.
So what do you think about that?

We ain't ever gonna attack those China commies, it would be as dumb as directly attacking the Ruskies. Yeah in a war there's a chance we might eventually beat China because we've got Stealth bombers and such, but look at what there is to loose. The Chinese mainland have one of the largest ground forces on the planet if you fight them in their own backyard its going to be a bloodbath ( forget about Americans dying in Iraq or Afghanistan if we fight China we are really going to get punished big time ), fighting China would require 100% of the US army might. The PLA also have a heap of ICBMs, they are building Submarine Launched Systems, and have a load of MIRVs. If the USA and China ever go to war, there's a chance we could beat them but expect Washington, Dallas and Los Angeles to be turned into radioactive craters (little to win except a planet covered in nuclear fallout). Anyway on this DPRK Nuke issue, some of the good news is that Russia, Japan and China are standing alongside the USA in condemnation of this North Korean nuclear test.

DPRK scares the world with Long-Taepo-Dong ICBM

North Korea fired off a multistage rocket from a base along its east coast on Sunday, a senior South Korean foreign ministry official confirmed.

The blast-off occurred at around 11:30 a.m. and seems to have flown over Japan, the official told Yonhap News Agency, asking not to be named.

North Korea said the closely-watched launch was aimed at placing a satellite into orbit, while South Korea, the U.S, and Japan suspect it was a test of the reclusive communist nation's most advanced missile.

The rockets 1st stage was a success the final fairing for satellite launch failed

This means the Norks have a successful IRBM missile that can drop a biological WMD on Hawaii or Okinawa
but they don't have an ICBM missile that can reach California or Washington

Then again maybe the DPRK missile program is completely peaceful and the Koreans have ambitions for peaceful exploration of Mars

Maybe just no need to fight EVERYBODY for EVERMORE.

Do I think it's a provocation for North Korea to pursue a missile program? Sure. But then again, isn't it ALSO a provocation when we do the same? We claim it's a violation of international law for them to pursue ICBMs; doesn't that then make us a "rogue nation"? We certainly HAVE ICBMs in our possession, thousands of them. And we're also provoking plenty enough people putting ABM systems in the Czech Republic (to protect the Czechs from the Iranians, supposedly), putting Patriot missile systems in Israel to provoke the Syrians, the Iraqis, the Saudis, the Lebanese, the Jordanians, the Egyptians, the Palestinians, and everyone else in the region.

What I'm trying to figure out is why it's so wrong when someone does the exact same kind of bullshit that we ourselves do on a daily basis?

Doesn't that seem just a little bit like you're being spoon-fed a load of propaganda, and swallowing it hook, line, and sinker?

Probably not. It’s a dangerous situation. North Korea is a Stalinist state backed by China, with a near dead economy and crazy rulers, it’s really a wild card what they will do with a nuclear armed ICBM. Technology that they are fast approaching.

The desperate desire to wave aside the security that you enjoy in this nation is sad and pathetic. But nonetheless, however much you don’t care for the lives of Americans, I do. And so I am very much concerned about the security of this nation and those that threaten it.

Our so-called "security" in this damn country isn't something a rational person would "enjoy" there Finn.

In fact, our so-called security agencies are responsible for more terrorism against our nation and it's people than any foreign source, something that even the most superficial investigation of those agencies and their historical conduct will prove beyond a shadow of doubt.

With that fact in mind, your assumption that I don't care is patently ridiculous since I am of the opinion we should address such threats in order of proximity and ability - which means starting with those dickheads down in quantico and langley, who might I add, in many cases originally trained, equipped and financed, and thus CREATED, those very middle eastern threats you are so concerned about.

Saddam Hussein, Osama Bin Laden, Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, Ramzi Youssef, The Mujahideen, a nice long list of current threats which would never have BECOME threats without the aid of our very own so-called "security" agencies.

I know you ain't stupid enough to have forgotten this, and while the threat posed by these berks *IS* something we have to address, we damn well ought to address the sources within our own borders which create such threats in the first place.

I said it before, I'll say it again.

The gravest threat to our national security, is our National Security.

China has condemned North Korea's nuclear test and called on Pyongyang not to worsen the situation.

North Korea reportedly test-fired three short range missiles, just hours after detonating a nuclear device.

It is believed the nuclear blast detonated deep underground was at least four times more powerful than North Korea's first test nearly three years ago.

While the Stalinist state hailed the test as a cause for national celebration, it has been condemned around the world.

Heh, Guess we won't be invading North Korea and stripping their natural resources whiles demolishing their entire society and culture, eh ?

I might not like em, but they were smart enough to realize the one and only way to force the big boys to negotiate instead of just stomping them, and now we have to decide whether to let them join the club - or try to take their big stick away, which frankly, all of the other bullies of the big boys club ain't got the balls to do.

Now, if you're unarmed on that level, well, then you're just our plaything, and we've sent that message clear enough that prettymuch EVERY country on the planet wants one - great advert for disarmament and non-proliferation that is eh ?
"If you don't have nukes, we get to crap all over your county, yay!"

Yeah, sure, THAT will discourage folks from building them as fast as they can, won't it now ?

Y'all *DO* realize it was our very blatant threats that caused the North Koreans to accellerate that program, right ?

You make dire, lethal grade threats at someone, you should not be surprised when they reach for a weapon.

All this whining is just pissed off first-world bullies angry cause now they must negotiate instead of dictate.

I could be wrong, but I don't really think there are any natural resources to strip or society/culture to demolish in N Korea. Kim's Hollywood fetish notwithstanding (as culture to demolish, not a resource to strip ).
