Oh, I LIKE this! I've never known whether what I perceive as my lessening cognitive function is due to age, my bipolar meds (I did discover that one of my meds affected my balance, so lowered the dose), dope or something else. I think I'll believe this study!
Quote:

If you're acting stupid because you're a stoner, you might just be playing to type. That is, it may be your expectations about marijuana's long-term cognitive effects — rather than any real effect of the drug itself — that is to blame, particularly if you're male, according to new research. The study, which was published in the journal Addictive Behaviors, explored the effect of "stereotype threat" — the idea that performance is affected by conventional images of minorities — on marijuana smokers.

Earlier studies of stereotype threat have found that when African Americans are asked to identify themselves by race before being tested, they tend to score worse than blacks who weren't reminded of their race — in line with racist stereotypes about blacks doing poorly in school.

Explains study co-author Mitch Earleywine, professor of psychology at the University of Albany–SUNY: "The bottom line is if you get folks into the lab and prime them about the minority group they're in, they tend to behave consistent with the stereotype. With Asian women, if you bring them in and say, 'Oh, you're a chick, you can't do math,' they tend to do lousy. But if you say, 'Oh, you're an Asian,' they do well."

Earleywine wondered if the same could be true of marijuana smokers. While there are obviously acute effects of the drug on memory when someone is high, the research on marijuana's long-term impact on cognition, when not under the influence, is complicated. A meta-analysis that summed up the research found no clinically significant effects, but some individual studies have shown small but measurable cognitive differences between long-term, short-term and non-users. Is it possible that the studies that found a negative effect had cued marijuana users to the fact that they weren't supposed to do well?

Earleywine and his colleagues studied 57 users, 30 male and 27 female. Half were given material to read suggesting that marijuana damages the brain; the other half read a research summary suggesting that the drug had no long-term negative cognitive effects. Then, all participants were asked to take cognitive tests after abstaining from marijuana for at least one day.

There was a marked difference in results — interestingly, between men and women. Men who got the negative information about marijuana performed worse than men who didn't, but the women who were faced with stereotype threat actually scored better on tests of verbal skills and memory than women who weren't given negative information.

"I think that the stoner identity reads differently to women," says Earleywine. "They were like, 'I'll show you!' It was funny to see that go in the opposite direction. They did better than those who read that [marijuana has] no impact, on three of four measures."

"It certainly seems plausible that if someone came up and told you that marijuana caused cognitive impairment and gave you some test that you might respond by showing some cognitive impairment," says Dr. Harrison Pope, professor of psychiatry at Harvard Medical School, who has conducted studies of marijuana and cognition himself. "But what is odd is that women would have paradoxically shown better performance whereas men showed worse. I'd like to see it replicated."

If the finding holds up, says Pope, "It would throw in yet another factor one has to consider when studying the effects of marijuana."

Interesting.

I've tested stoners a lot on problem solving etc. They're not stupid, they are mentally disabled. They're incapable of certain kinds of thought and problem solving. It's due basically entirely to receptor loss. Reversing that is one of my pet projects. But it's definitely not made up, it's very real. Given complex logic puzzles in test after test, I found that the average person could do the puzzles in a wide range from 15 seconds to 15 minutes, which was based on their core problem solving skills and their familiarity with similar problems. By contrast, long term marijuana users, even after only a few years of use, whether high or not, could not solve the problems. Typically it took them over an hour to reach the conclusion, and they could not do so without several hints, often fishing for help from every corner that they could. They weren't not of a mind that they couldn't solve the problems, they were certain they could, and while they eventually came up with solutions, they essentially never did it alone, they always got assistance from others, sometimes every advance they made in the problem came in the form of hints. Non-drug user, the sXe crowd, seemed to do just the reverse: They secluded themselves from any outside influence.

Anthony,

They were all logic problems. I'm sure you could solve them, I don't suspect you're a stoner. I suspect maybe Chris is a stoner

Here a simple one, anyone doing it, set your stop watch before reading on:

Select to view spoiler:

A man stops at a hotel for a week.
He must pay one coin a night for a room.
He has a silver chain that has seven links.
The woman running the hotel will accept one link as payment.
He can never pay in advance, and he can never be behind.
He can make one cut once in one link.
Which link does he cut?

The logic of Mary sits next to sue but could not sit across from a boy, etc. is the type of analytical problem.

In RPGs I constructed elaborate problems. It was not *that* someone smoked weed, it was how much they smoked. Even highly function regular smokers did very poorly, but all of the subjects were college age, so that would effect the study. But there were many students and problems enough to make it the obvious determining factor. Even those who were excellent problem solvers to begin with who started smoking ended up doing poorly, even when not high. Admittedly, they did much worse when high.

Well, that certainly does explain a lot.

Per the story, most ( though clearly not all ) stoners I've encountered in my life are actually quite intelligent.

That is, they POSSESS intelligence, though that's not to say they always make smart choices.

It appears, from my experiences, that given a choice between exclusively smoking or drinking, the more cerebral types tend to choose weed over booze.

Just my anecdotal observation.

One of the things that I believe IS right about dope is the lack of motivation. Either I started out that way or it's the dope, because I've never been terribly motivated. UNTIL I start something, then I go like a bat out of hell, but that might be the bipolarity ;o). It's possible lack of motivation has made people who smoke dope regularly lazy about their mental skills.

Thanx, Raptor I haven't been able to "officially" buy dope for over a year because of that stupid new tax. Working on getting some from my old dealer 'cuz I miss it. I know I'm not the regular dope smoker; it's my "evening cocktail" and I only have a couple of hits. Most people get really stoned when they smoke.

I started smoking over drinking in college. Booze doesn't like me, tho' I like it, and in social situations at that age, you want to partake of SOMETHING.

I'll have to check out your example.

Hello,

Having never smoked weed (or used any illicit substances), I also could not solve the problem to my satisfaction. After approximately five minutes, I came up with two answers. Neither of them fully satisfied me. I spent the next twenty minutes searching for additional answers, to no avail.

Select to view spoiler:

The problem confused me a great deal, as I could not divine what it was trying to tell me.

However, based on what it was asking me, I felt strongly that the selection of link was unimportant.

Either A) the lady was prepared to accept one link as payment for the week, in which case you'd cut one off and give it to her at checkout.

Or B) she wanted links as a 1 for 1 replacement for coins, in which case you'd cut one off and give the rest to her at checkout after staying six nights during the week.

However, the phrasing of the problem makes me suspect that payment must be registered daily, and not at checkout. I could not figure out a way to get more than three independent links removed with one cut, so if this is the intent I could not divine how to solve the problem.

I am quite dismayed at my dismal performance.

My guess would be "he can make one cut once in one link" means he oould make one cut once in each link, ergo paying one link per day. In other words, he could make one cut once in every individual link.

Anthony, given the problem says he can't be ahead or behind, I don't think it allows for giving them all at once, or once at check-in and the rest at check-out.

Am I a stupid stoner?

Anthony, Niki,

The problem states all the details correctly, and from each detail you can infer specifics of other details, as Niki has done here, although that may classify as a hint.

To clarify the point,

A) the rate of exchange is one link=one coin, and one coin (or link) is the cost of a night.

B) The stipulation that he cannot pay in advance or fall behind is absolute, so he cannot pay all on check in or check out.

C) He may only make one cut in one link once. Not once per link or once per day, only once, and in only one link, as Anthony supposed in his last option.

Rap,

It was not my conclusion that stoners were less intelligent nor less wise, but that certain synaptic connections had been interfered with, probably do to specific receptor loss.

The solution: (I didn't look it up. I like logic.)

Select to view spoiler:

Cut the third link so you have 2, 1 (that's been cut) and 4.

1st night: pay with one.
2nd night: pay with two, take one back
3rd night: pay with the one you got back
4th night: hand over the four, take back the two and the one
5th night: pay with one
6th night: pay with two, take one back

At the end, you have the one cut link still, and have paid six.

QED.

DT: took me 10 minutes of thinking, another 2 to type it up. I smoked a lot of pot when I was dating a stoner a few years back. Haven't much lately.

The stoner, who'd been smoking almost daily for decades and likely still is, invented a method of etching tiny circuits onto chips and started his own company. He's brilliant. Pot helps him "focus" and be mellow, he said, though he did not smoke the day before he had to be "on" as he called it, like if he had to meet with investors.

Um... thanks. But as I tell my students: I don't think it's intelligence as much as stubbornness. And cockiness? Solving problems like this isn't so bad as long as you believe that there is a solution, that it's logical, and that you can find it. Easiest way to get lost is to over-complicate it, figure it's impossible and give up.

The ones I think are impossible are the word riddles, like Bilbo/Gollum riddles. It's like you have to know some multi-meaning word or forget it. I suck at those.

Mal,

Yes, of course. Well done. That was a pretty average time. Heavy duty problem solvers solved it very quickly, but they tended to be people used to dealing with mary sits next to sue type problems.

A lot of pot is a relative term.

Anthony,

You didn't spoiler your comments on the solution. Yes the trick on most problems is to keep all of the rules in mind. Stoners tended to:

A) Lose track of the initial rules and start inventing their own

B) Fish for hints, figuring someone would tip them off

If you keep the rules in mind, then the solution should come. Keeping multiple variables in mind at once is a problem for stoners, and a problem for me post-anti-depressants.

Whozit,

Good porn sites don't last long enough to have a favorite. They don't usually get shut down, most often they either get eclipsed by competition, or they move to a pay only system and stop giving you free content.

The best one that's been up long term if you can handle softcore nudes that just have still shots, is Met Art. They have the cutest girls. I think like most softcore sites that they don't exploit what they have enough, but very very cute girls can up the value of porn a lot. I'd rather see random conservative nudes of a really hot chick than a really well done fantasy of a so-so looking one. I don't know what it is, but hotness has to be above a critical threshold for me or I get no response from my system.

Paris Hilton and Kim Kardashian could be in a fantastic threesome pickup video that was real and not staged and it will wouldn't do anything for me. Jennifer Jason Leigh kissing Bridget Fonda OTOH, will.

If you're a girl, and you know what scene I'm talking about in the last paragraph, you're gay.

This problem, like many as the thread suggests, is about belief in answers. If the data isn't wrong, then there must be a solution, you got about halfway there.

There's a few points that people slip up on.
1) They don't think of the cut link as a ring
2) They can't separate the link into three uneven slices
3) They don't know how to make numbers 1 through 7 out of those same 1 2 and 4 over again
4) They never think to ask for change.

The puzzle could state that you could not get actual coins for rings in trade, just that she accepts rings, but including that in the puzzle would be a form of hint, and would give it away.

Yes, Niki, you are dumb. When you are stoned. And when you are deciding to get stoned. And when you are getting more to facilitate getting stoned in the future. I'll refrain from commenting on your non-stoned related time.

Nice problem, I would have been surprised if it took me more than a couple minutes. I do not think the linear nature of the chain was adequately stated, I had to jump to an assumption to reach the assumed conclusion. An adequately elegant and properly posited problem should allow the solver to fully embrace the solution once found, as being obvious. Just like Niki thought that she had the solution when she assumed one cut per day or one cut per link was the acceptable assumption, one who makes the assumption of linear chain versus continuous (circular) chain cannot know for certain that the solution is the one intended by the puzzle presenter, or if the assumption is invalid.

As defined by the government research on pot comsuption circa early 1970's:
"Casual" use is one 1970 vintage joint per day - not deemed physiologically harmful.
"Moderate" use is two 1970 vintage joints per day - physiologically affects the immune system by heavily compromising it, permanent damage avoided in 50% of subjects.
"Abuse" is 3 or more of 1970 vintage joints per day of the immuno-suppressant/depressant known as marijuana, producing permanent (unrecoverable) damage to the imunne system.
After the release of this study, Marijuana has been bred for its potency, or intensity/concentration of active ingredient.
By the criteria of the study, the potency of a joint by 2000 was 30 times as potent as the 1970 vintage pot used in the study. So in terms of 2000 vintage pot, one thirtieth of a joint is casual use, and one tenth of one joint was abuse, causing irreversible damage to your immune system.
Now, ten more years of breeding for potency has likely turned your "one hit" into an abusive level.
Ever heard of Aquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome?

One way of thinking about the dumbness of stoners: They possess a reservoir of what their brain/senses obtained before they were stoned, or between when they were stoned. When stoned, they cannot tap nor locate that reservoir, even if they believe that reservoir exists within them.

Anthony, you can put your filter back on.

Nice personal insults.
Quote:

"Casual" use is one 1970 vintage joint per day - not deemed physiologically harmful.
Given my consumption for decades has been ONE OR TWO HITS per night, I still come under that classification unless you can prove that the potency has increased to the amount you posit.

Interestingly, once I got past the snarks and read it, I was going to post about the 1970 vintage being not what is around today and how much stronger today's marijuana is. I'm glad that was later added to the post.

Also interestingly, you went after my not solving the puzzle correctly, but nobody else doing the same. Shows some personal prejudice, I would suggest. Given I know how you feel about me, it wasn't surprising.

But, uh, AIDS from marijuana??? How did you make that connection?! AIDS is a VIRUS, it doesn't magically appear out of thin air.

You're entitled to your opinion; I'm entitled to mine. I happen to think many millions more Americans consume an addictive and/or physiologically harmful amount of booze. And the vast majority of Americans consume SOME booze. We could argue the comparative dangers of the two, but I won't bother.

The fact is that mankind has searched for ways to escape reality for a time ever since they first figured out it was done. That my method is any more "dumb" than anyone else's is opinion.

The same goes for tapping into that "reservoir" of which you speak, and the intent in smoking dope OR drinking booze is not to tap into some reservoir of the brain, it is to relax (for some of us).

I did not "go after" you. I used as anecdotal example your experience, since you had the only clearly explained "detour" resulting from the unclear presentation of the puzzle. Had any other explained the example as well as you had, I would have used their example just as readily.
You assumed I was attacking, rather than sympathetic.
Had the puzzle been stated with "the length of chain had 7 links" or "the chain was 7 links long" the clarity would have been greater.
Can we not agree?
