PRINCETON, NJ -- Ahead of Presidents Day 2011, Americans are most likely to say Ronald Reagan was the nation's greatest president -- slightly ahead of Abraham Lincoln and Bill Clinton. Reagan, Lincoln, or John F. Kennedy has been at the top of this "greatest president" list each time this question has been asked in eight surveys over the last 12 years.

Presidents Day, celebrated on the third Monday of February each year, officially commemorates the Feb. 22 birthday of George Washington. The country's first president is not regarded by Americans as the nation's greatest president, however. Gallup's Feb. 2-5 update shows that Washington comes in fifth on the list, behind Reagan, Lincoln, Clinton, and Kennedy.

In the eight times Gallup has asked this same "greatest president" question over the last 12 years, one of three presidents -- Lincoln, Reagan, and Kennedy -- has topped the list each time. Reagan was the top vote getter in 2001, 2005, and now 2011. Lincoln won in 1999, in two 2003 surveys, and in 2007. Kennedy was on top in 2000, and tied with Lincoln in November 2003.

yeah, well people are just plain uninformed. I know this from experience. I can remember back to when I thought Reagan must have been one of our best Presidents...why? because people were preaching it as gospel from the on high, and the thoughtful masses were just regurgitating it, as we do, and as I would have done.

Still, while Reagan, the man who tear gassed peaceful protesters as governor of California, might have signaled a new era of union wrecking, and poor hating(welfare queens?), and military spending, and the demise of some semblance of balanced media, etc. etc. etc.

he would still be so left of crazy that your ass would never vote for him today.

My favorite presidents, order changes depending on the day: Lincoln, Roosavelt, Washington, Madison, Addams, I guess Kennedy too.

Which Roosevelt? And which Adams?

Franklin D Roosevelt. John Addams, the one who was married to Abigail. Now granted, the problem with me choosing Addams is that I like him as a founding father, but I admit that I don't know that much about his presidency. So maybe I should take him off the list, after all I really like Grant, great general, but as I recall his presidential skills left something to be desired.

Freedom is Important because People are Important

Hello,

One of my recollections of Adams is that he endorsed legislation that limited free speech.

One of my recollections of Lincoln is that he allowed his military commanders to selectively target civilian centers for attack.

But then, finding any notable leader that is free from serious flaws is difficult.

Yeah, and Roosevelt and Kennedy rutted with women on the side and Washington owned slaves, none of us are perfect, even leaders, especially leaders? ... well ... including us and leaders, we screw up.

Grant was not a great general. And these polls are stupid because it depends on the mood of the populace. Reagen wins now because of the groundswell of support for neo-conservativism. Kennedy wins when people are hopeful about possibly bad ideas and Lincoln wins when people are overly patriotic without really thinking about things.

And don't nobody dare talk about the human side of MLK, cause that would be racist.

Learning about the real lives if these historic figures is very interesting though. I recently attended a lecture on Robert E Lee, which ya know, you sometimes have to be careful with in the south. He's part of the holy trinity and all along with Elvis Presley and Jesus Christ. The historian, however, gave a very interesting and more honest account of Robert E Lee the man.

Does that make him any less of a brilliant strategist? Not at all, but some folks 'don't take too kindly' to people ruining their icons with historic data.

In the end, as with all things, it comes down to firefly, specifically Jaynestown in this case. It's about what the people need.
