It was good enough for Saddam, right ?

...reminded me of something so I dug into the library downstairs and found...

Quote:

As I understand it, the laws of New Texas do not extend their ordinary protection to persons engaged in the practice of politics. An act of personal injury against a politician is considered criminal only to the extent that the politician injured has not, by his public acts, deserved the degree of severity with which he has been injured, and that the Court of Political Justice is established for the purpose of determining whether or not there has been such an excess of severity in the treatment meted out by the accused to the injured or deceased politician.

This quote is from a charming SciFi novel titled, variously, "A Planet for Texans" or "Lone Star Planet", written by H. Beam Piper in 1958.

Another quote from this story, from the presiding Judge at the Court of Political Justice (edited a bit)...

Quote:

The Court of Political Justice has reached a verdict. Wilber Whatley, approach and hear the verdict. Wilber Whately, this court is proud to announce that you have been unanimously acquitted of the charge or political irresponsibility and of unjustified and excessive atrocity.

There was one dissenting vote on acquitting you of the charge of political irresponsibility; one of the associate judges felt that the late unmitigated scoundrel, Austin Maverick, ought to have been skinned alive, an inch at a time. You are, however, acquitted of that charge too.

You all know the reason for which this young hero cut down that monster of political iniquity, S. Austin Maverick. On the very morning of his justly-merited death, Austin Maverick using the powers of his political influence, rammed through the Finance and Revenue Committee a bill entitled ' An Act for the Taxing of Personal Incomes, and the Levying of a Withholding Tax'. Fellow citizens, words fail me to express my horror of this diabolic proposition, this proposed instrument of tyrannical extortion, borrowed from the Dark Ages of the Twentieth Century! Why, if this young nobleman had not taken his blade in hand, I'd have killed the sonofabitch, myself!

I therefore restore to you your weapons, taken from you when, in compliance with the law, you were formally arrested. Buckle them on, and, assuming your weapons again, go forth from this court a free man. And take with you that machete with which you vindicated the liberties and rights of all New Texans. Bear it reverently to your home, hang it among your lares and penates, cherish it, and dying, mention it within your will, bequeathing it as a rich legacy unto your issue.

Any opinions?

BTW, If you haven't read anything by H. Beam Piper, try some. They're 50 years old, but hold up well.

I'm gonna take a stab in the dark and say that Piper is being satirical. If that be the case, anyone who thngs it's a legitimate option for government:

DREAMTROVE

I think the line is on specific credible threats, the same with any crime. If you outlay a plan of assault on a specific politician, you're in trouble

But the New Texans DO have laws. They have a Court of Political Justice to determine if actions against politicians are excessive based on that politician's record.

Who decides the politician's "record", though? Some see FDR as a hero, some see him as a villain. By any credible rules of evidence, Dubya *IS* an admitted war criminal (and Vincent Bugliosi is only one of dozens of DAs to sign letters asking for Dubya to be indicted on the charge of murder, among other charges), yet folks like "Hero" and Rappy here will declare him the greatest President in American history for his crimes against humanity, the American people, and the state.

So is this like other courts, where "justice" is for sale to the highest bidder?
