Probably political, but it's a START anyway:
Quote:

President Barack Obama is expected to announce this week that 30,000 U.S. "surge" forces will be fully withdrawn from Afghanistan by the end of 2012, an administration official has told CNN.

An estimated 100,000 U.S. troops are currently serving in Afghanistan, some 30,000 of which are part of the so-called surge ordered in late 2009 in a bid to control the rising violence.

Obama has been mulling how many troops should be withdrawn this summer and by the end of the year.

The drawdown will be accomplished by troops returning home and not being replaced as well as cancelling some proposed deployments.

The rest of the article is political bullshit, but hey, bringing back almost a third of them (who admittedly were put there not long ago...perhaps at least partly with the view to "drawing them down"?) is a begining at least.

It's a start as long as he doesn't boost troops somewhere else, or with *someone* else. (ie pakistanis, afghans, blackwater, etc.)

I second DT; my knee jerk reaction to the thread title was "Great, so long as the definition of pull-out isn't move into Pakistan."

Personally, I think it's more geared toward re-election, as well as having to do SOMETHING since he already "set" that "deadline". I certainly hope you're both wrong and we don't see our military just shifted over, rather than brought home!

I suspect Obama is moving to a Clinton war plan. "Put small numbers of US troops on the ground to larger foreign mercenary forces, and then use as much automated warfare and attrition as possible." I always credited Wes Clark with this strategy, which it not one I'm fond of, but I don't see him around. Does anyone know? Are any of the old asymmetrical warfare crowd around? I mean, aside from Rockefeller.

Don't know. I'm too young to recognize any military or state officials from Clinton's time.

Any of the 21st century generals listed here look familiar?

Chances are some of them learned the ropes from the old guard, so the tactics may not have changed if none of them are familiar.

Someone like Obama's chief military adviser, who I see is so recently Martin Dempsey, I don't know him.

I do recognize some of the names on that list, I figure everyone does.

I meant from the time period in question. Everyone knows McChrystal and Petraeus.

Well, they have to pull out TO *somewhere*. Pakistan, Libya, Yemen, Bahrain, Kuwait, Saudi... ;)

HARDWARE

Glad the troops are starting to come home. Hope it doesn't turn to shit once we leave. Coupled with the news that we are negotiating with the Taliban I'm not sanguine about the long term prospects. I recognize that this is probably part of the gearing up for the 2012 campaign.

It is a truism that almost any sect, cult, or religion will legislate its creed into law if it acquires the political power to do so, and will follow it by suppressing opposition, subverting all education to seize early the minds of the young, and by killing, locking up, or driving underground all heretics - RAH
