Excellent article. You're right; that's a REAL Real World Event; and I hadn't heard a word about this. For those who haven't gone to your URL:

Ai Weiwei may be the best-known victim of severe crackdown on dissent in China.

After mounting international pressure, the authorities released the celebrated artist on Wednesday after accusing him of tax evasion. He has been effectively silenced by a series of restrictions on what he can say and do.

China's move to douse any flicker of protest began in February - a response, many believe, to the uprisings in the Middle East.

But human rights groups say that, despite the crackdown, there has been a surge of strikes, protests and disturbances nationwide.

Channel 4 News gained access to one city in the south east called Xintang. It was recently rocked by four days of rioting and is now under police lock-down. But its resident are increasingly willing to challenge the authorities.

In the People's Republic of China, stability is king. Dissent is forbidden. Yet many of its citizens are unwilling to toe the party line. A younger generation is increasingly frustrated and calling for change.

Two weeks ago the streets erupted in a city called Xintang. A pregnant woman who ran a stall was beaten by local police, say protesters. And the news travelled fast.

In scenes captured on a mobile phone, rioters overwhelmed and destroyed the police headquarters. And such disturbances are occurring more frequently, according to human rights groups.

This is amazing, given what's happened to dissenteres in China in the past. I'm caught between encouraging them and being scared what's going to happen to them. Does prove China's not immune, however, and how important young, educated people who are willing to put their lives on the line are. I wish them well, however it comes out, and have a feeling China won't be able to keep itself "locked down" forever (I hope).

Long time coming, though most people thought the working class and the city class weren't going to start acting against the party for another twenty years. Interesting.

Keep the Shiny side up

Do a little research. There are demonstrations and riots in China all the time, about anything from pollution to forced relocation, to wages, to ethnic discrimination. You just don't hear about it much because the government there has such tight control of media, both internal and external.

I hope that change comes soon for all those in China, its been too long and even though their government paints a rosy picture of happy citizens I know it isn't really like the say it is.

Lots and lots of Chinese assure me on a regular basis that it is much worse. The govt. they say has about 1% support, which is slightly less than the govt. of Saudi Arabia, North Korea and the DRC.

How the communists maintain control over a population that hates them so much is with millions of soldiers and police and bureaucrats who are paid less than half of their private sector counterparts. The cost of maintaining this monstrosity is crushing the govt, which is afraid to tax south china any more than it is lest it secede. The situation is one of the great messes of the world.

Could some of these riots have been encouraged by us, either directly or indirectly? I've heard rumours about the middle east revolutions. Could we have encouraged those hoping something might happen in China?

I'm not quite believing we might have directly done anything here, because the last thing we want is open war with China. It would be too big a risk. But I think I could see some motives.

Geezer, in my opinion ALL governments exercise some amount of control over media, how their population views the rest of the world and vice versa, ours certainly included. I'm sad that the Chinese government has THAT much control, selfishly because I want to know what's going on all over the world.

I would also venture the possibility that maybe our government doesn't encourage such news to be spread around, either, since I'm guessing they wouldn't want us to have any more negative view of our "debt holders" than we already do. Whatcha think?

Byte, I hope to hell not! Tho' I know there are things going on under the surface everywhere, and we're certainly not averse to sticking our noses in both overtly and covertly. On the other hand, I'm more inclined to think the Chinese government, of all of them, would be more capable of keeping us from having the ability to make much of an impact (whereas those in the Middle East would not, comparatively).

Remember this, over 2 MILLION man STANDING ARMY, with over 10 MILLION in reserves, and we know they have no qualms bout running ppl over with tanks, and generally killing ppl. And the U.N aint gonna do shit, cuz they dont got the numbers nor the backbone, the U.S. wont do anything much cus were comming out of a 10 year long war, were disillusioned to our govmn't, and frankly we dont have near enough willing people. And Russia which is in a position wont do anything unless China moves against them, and even the Chinese aren't stupid enough to openly assault Ruissa, hell, the Ruskies are worse than Chinese. Dont bring up the Georgian thing for Russia though, cus Russia was in the right in that case.
