A federal appeals court temporarily has reinstated the "don't ask, don't tell" policy that bans gays and lesbians from serving in the military, but banned the services from investigating or discharging anyone under the rule.

The 9th U.S. Circuit U.S. Court of Appeals in California issued the order late Friday after the Obama administration asked it to reconsider its recent order temporarily blocking the policy.

U.S. officials have been moving ahead with dismantling "don't' ask, don't tell" but had objected to having the courts force the government to officially repeal it at this time.

At issue in the complex legal fight is whether "don't ask, don't tell" can remain in effect -- even in name only -- while the legal fight over its constitutionality is being carried out in the federal courts. Judges have been at odds over the enforcement issue for months.

The case has put the Obama administration in an unusual position of supporting a repeal, but at the same time filing court motions to prevent it from happening faster than planned. Military officials suggest the policy compliance changes eliminating "don't ask, don't tell" could be finished in a few weeks.

I'm all for keeping private things private and not broadcasting one's private business around for all. So my only problem with don't ask don't tell (from how I understand the policy) is that if they find out that you do engage in same sex rutting then they fire you, which I don't believe is fair. That person can be an effective warrior just as much as anyone else could, especially if they've been serving for a long time admirably. So I don't like the discharging thing, but I do like discretion and keeping one's business to oneself.

Here's the problem with that: If you're married, do you wear a wedding ring? Aren't you "broadcasting" your private business around by doing so? If you live on base housing with your spouse, isn't that telling everybody what your preference is?

See what I mean? One can "broadcast" their orientation in a thousand different ways, as long as they're straight. But if you're in the military, even if someone else outs you because of a grudge, and you've done NOTHING that would in any way be construed as a dereliction of duty, because they went to your superiors and made claims about your orientation, you're out, period.

That is a standard of behavior that isn't applied to anyone else.

In all fairness, PDA from any orientation is pretty gross.

Good point about wedding rings.

Riona, it's much more than that. Many reports say it was really a witch hunt, the military was TRYING to find out who was gay, even by trickery, so they could boot them out. Supposedly it was never realy "Don't Ask, Don't Tell", they even took the word of unconfirmed sources and third parties and so forth.

Well, so long as it's not over the top, I actually find public PDAs kinda sweet, regardless of orientation and appearance, but imma hedonistic poly and you're not, so to each their own, I guess.

As for the witch hunt, oh it didn't stop there, my buddy Rev, while on the Kosovo deployment wound up actually CHARGED with "witchcraft" and subjected to a lot of hassle and bullshit from IG before the whole matter was quashed by word from on high after someone else pulled a few strings - the whole fiasco was started over a personal vendetta anyway, but the fact remains the military is about as intolerant a cult as there ever was, and that fact alone is one of the REASONS our military generally needs nine-to-one odds to have any chance at all of accomplishing anything.

Well, yeah, there's a limit to public behavior - not that much would offend me, but it's a matter of not purposefully infringing on the ridiculous puritan sensibilities of the masses as a common courtesy.

I've been known to make get-a-room or threats to find a garden hose myself, but only when it seems a deliberate affront rather than simple passion.

Of course, I'm kind of a hypocrite about that, since I deliberately freaked out a serious asshole amongst our arabic community in Dearborn but giving him the eye and telling him I thought turbans were sexy... LMFAO, you shoulda SEEN his face before he hauled ass outta there!
I'm actually not interested whatever in other men but imma shameless flirt and not above using it as a weapon or general mindfuckery.

Anyhow, THAT bastard had it coming, and just thinkin about that LOOK, makes me giggle, he all but ran screaming in terror, it was great.

Niki, yeah that does sound icky, I'm opposed to that kind of shinaniganry, accusations etc. really rude and again interfering with private things.

Quicko, I didn't think about base housing, ... well ... I'm still up in the air about that one.

Partners can wear rings if they like though, I don't care and that isn't too obnoxious or private, so why not.

ETA: So I thought about it and I think that military folk should be allowed to have anyone live with them on base that they want, brothers, sisters, kids, aunts, parents, best friends whomever, so partners would figure into that.

Nah, grab a camera.
