A squirrel was responsible for a power outage that affected about 1,400 DTE Energy customers in Ann Arbor. At least one resident of the area reported witnessing several explosions about the time the power went out.

DTE spokesman Scott Simons said crews found a broken pole that had been burned as a result of a squirrel coming in contact with electrical equipment. Workers also found the remains of the squirrel.

Power went out at 1:38 a.m. today for about 1,400 customers and was restored about 5 a.m. for all but 280 customers. Simons said. The rest got power back about 10:40 this morning, he said.

Gabriel Richards, who lives in the Briarcrest condominiums off South Main Street, said he saw at least three "really bright white flashes in the sky toward Briarwood Mall about 1:30 this morning." He said the power went on and off a few times before going out completely.

The area affected stretched from I-94 on the west to east of South State Street and from Briarwood Mall on the south to Northbrook Drive on the north. DTE said 1,460 customers were without power.

Yes, squirrel suicide bombers, going after our infrastructure... maybe those assholes at DTW are profiling the wrong species.

Thanx both of you; first giggle of the morning.

Ours are much friendlier; they eat from the feeders I gave them...

They eat from the bird feeders I DIDN'T give them...

They hang out...

They eat from the window bird feeder I didn't give them, too...

And the reds are even small enough to climb INTO the window feeder I didn't give them...

Hmmm, maybe they're not so friendly after all...or just greedy!

Goodbye, kind world (George Monbiot) - In common with all those generations which have contemplated catastrophe, we appear to be incapable of understanding what confronts us.

They look really well fed.

Remember when teachers, public employees, Planned Parenthood, NPR and PBS crashed the stock market, wiped out half of our 401Ks, took trillions in taxpayer funded bailouts, spilled oil in the Gulf of Mexico, gave themselves billions in bonuses, and paid no taxes?

Yeah, me neither....

Are you sure those aren't zombie squirrels? They look sorta zombieish to me.

I'm thinking the "Does the .22 LR Have a Place in Zombie Defense?" thread may apply here.

But actually, my squirrels are well-fed too. I consider them survival rations when the SHTF.

Of course I know you're teasing, NewOld, I know you THAT well at least!

Oh, I'll keep feedin' 'em, you can be sure. We love 'em, they give us much joy, and this year we got a youngling who is the bravest of all. We can stand in the kitchen doorway, not four feet from him, and he'll go right on eating, and he'll stay in the window feeder (he's the little guy in the photo) while we muck about in the kitchen. I adore the little bugger.

I DID finally have a piece of luck...or common sense, but I think more likely luck. I replaced the orange trays now under all three feeders to catch the excess/trash...it's amazing how many seeds birds reject and toss aside (and how FAR!). We have a rat problem, so I do my best to keep anything edible away and take the feeders in at night...and we have a beebee gun on the counter so all three of us can take pot shots at the rats that dare to climb the chains to the feeders (never hit shit, none of us are that good and rats move FAST, but it scares the hell out of 'em and keeps them away for a few hours).

When I replaced them, I hung them much LOWER on the wires that attach them to the chains they walk on. Not only are the rats having a harder time getting to the BIRD feeder as a result, but the squirrels seem to be leaving it alone and eating from the SQUIRREL FEEDER instead, like they're supposed to. They can climb DOWN on that to eat (or hang over the side); they have to JUMP down to the bird-feeder tray, and thus far none have been willing to try. Of course, it makes the rats hungrier, and I caught one of THEM in the window feeder this morning... But at least the squirrels are eating the (cheaper) squirrel food once again...a minor victory!
