A resolution by the Laurens County Republican Party is raising eyebrows — and questions — about what it means to be a Republican in South Carolina.

At issue is a “purity” pledge that the Upstate county’s party approved Feb. 28, requiring those who file to run in the June 12 Republican primary to promise they did not have premarital sex, will be faithful to their spouses and will not watch porn while also fighting to protect gun rights.
.....
The pledge is giving S.C. Democrats a good laugh. “It’s absolutely absurd,” said Phil Bailey, director of the state Senate Democratic Caucus. “While the rest of the country is living in the 21st century, South Carolina Republicans are stuck in a social time machine. http://www.miamiherald.com/2012/03/06/2678172/south-carolina-gop-says-
purity.html

The pledge, among other things:
Quote:

You must favor, and live up to, abstinence before marriage.

You must be faithful to your spouse.

Your spouse cannot be a person of the same gender.

You cannot now, from the moment you sign this pledge, look at pornography.

There's more, gun rights, abortion, etc.

Well, after all it IS South Carolina!

Hello,

I think if anyone asked me to make such a pledge, I'd resign the party.

Never forget what this man is. You keep forgiving him his trespasses and speak to him as though he is a reasonable human being. You keep forgetting the things he's advocated. If you respond to this man again, you are being foolish.

Are you sure u didnt pick this one up from The Onion? I mean, really sure?

Cuz this just sounds too preposterous to be real....and yet, it really shouldn't even surprise me any more, but somehow it does.

"Ooh! You had sex once in college! And, GASP, u even enjoyed it! Clearly I cant trust you to represent my interests"

sounds like those Family Leader folks, who claimed that a black child under slavery, had a better chance of living with both parents than one who lives under Obama.

Their pledge was very similar, this might be a recycled copy of it.

Updated story on the Miami Herald webpage has the GOP saying that this pledge is unlawful.

That's just going too far, people are actually going for this? Its a political party for goodness sake, not an application to pastor a church or run its junior high group. This is overthetop.

Seems extreme to me. Shouldn't a political party be inviting as many people as possible who have similar political, or even economic, beliefs into their tent? Being exclusionary is cutting your own throat.

In SC, that tent is a 'revival' tent. All others need not apply, apparently.

p.s. - Sodomy is legal here in GA. I wonder if that 'pledge' only covers them while they're in SC.

Blue: It's real. Check the link, or you can find it by Googling.

And yes, the state Republican Party has since come out denouncing it. Thankfully!

Sometimes you own the libs. Sometimes, the libs own you.

I am increasingly heartened by the GOP's move towards ideological purity and etremity.

It's not personal. It's just war.

Yes, KPO, amazing, isn't it? I hope they keep it up, they'll end up with about ten people in the party...

Maybe then we could get some OTHER parties, instead of just the two (hey, I can dream!).
