Hello,

I remember now you mentioned some kind of contest or experiment. I guess this is the thing.

If I had to guess, I'd put either Story or Mike up top, since they are some of our most prolific and passionate posters.

Then maybe Raptor and Niki.

I wonder if you are limiting this to us calling each other names, or whether calling anyone a name is included. I can imagine that name calling related to people involved in prominent stories, or calling political parties and politicians names might cause the figures to be higher than one might expect.

Riona refered to insults in sigs that come up every thread, Rappy referred to an insult someone is posting in every thread.

This is one of the rare occaisions when I dont believe Rap is dodging when he says that comment wasnt about Anthony. I read it as a clear comment against Story, whose quote to that effect is in Rappy's sig.

As for odds, Id probably take Story. Theres just no hesitiation to let them fly fast and heavy.

I'm sure I'm right up there, depending on whether it's mockery or ugly personal attack. Doesn't particularly matter, but I'm curious. There's also the matter of reciprocity (not where I'm concerned, but in general). One person calls another something ugly the other person reciprocates; I'm not sure where that falls, especially as that usually goes on to become a ping-pong match of insults.

Does "childish" count? If so, Raptor is way ahead of everyone else! ;o)

Anyway, when do you give us the result? I tried this once--it may have been on the other board I was on previously, but back when I was amazed at how nasty people got, I did the same. I've long since accepted that it's just how it is and pretty much ignore it now.

If it's just a matter of counts, I don't post enough to make a list of anything around here. Bummer LOL! But then, I probably wouldn't anyway, since (in recent history) I only get negative on with one poster. That's rare, and not name-calling as much as truth telling, as I see it.

Anyhoo, I've had ideas about a different but slightly similar experiment of my own, but don't have the energy to follow through. Kudos to Riona for actually doing this. You really "scored" all the posts for a week? Yikes! I just spent a week grading a stack of exams, and my job was probably easier than yours!

Looking forward to the results. Hope you document it a bit so we can see how you came up with the numbers...

Well I don't hold with name calling, but I think you are missing a whole raft of ways people can put each other down and make others feel terrible and do so on these boards if that is the only thing you are counting. Name calling has some honesty to it. "I dislike you, you pig dog". You are at least stating your intentions clearly, not that it is pleasant and I was particularly horrified when there has been that real in the gutter verbal abuse with nasty sexual overtones that has been directed at Niki here by a poster - thankfully long gone - and against myself on another board.

I find some of the passive aggressive stuff by one or two posters here infinitely more difficult to take, because they can deny accountability for it. If you call someone a commie or a teabagger, at least EVERYONE is clear about your tactics, but sometimes there is some other stuff that goes on that may not be as obvious to all or those other than who it was directed to.

It was educational for me, because I always been a sort of, um, abrasive person, and that encounter (among other things at the time) made me realize what a moment's real abrasion can do.
