As in, for trade, payment, and the like.

Maybe this is how 'companioning' gets its start ?

I actually think poverty/starvation-driven prostitution has a long tradition among desperate women, so... the connection to Companioning or even the general term "sex" (as in mutual enjoyment) is loose at best.

I think it doesn't need to be said, but the idea that global warming would indeed lead to more 'barter' sex , is patently absurd.

There IS no 'global warming' crisis, for starters. And predicting how a fictional global crisis would influence the thoughts and actions of humans faced with such a 'calamity' stems far more from fiction than reality.

Thus, my 'companion' comment, as a tie into the very FICTIONAL world of Firefly. Which we all know and love, right ?

And as to the idea that global warming would result in there being more whores ?

Already has. Look at AlGore!

Seems to me that you didn't bother w/ the link.

That *I* posted it doesn't take away from the fact that it's more moronic DEMOCRATIC insanity, clogging up our nation's capital.

Several House Democrats are calling on Congress to recognize that climate change is hurting women more than men, and could even drive poor women to "transactional sex" for survival.

The resolution, from Rep. Barbara Lee (D-Calif.) and a dozen other Democrats, says the results of climate change include drought and reduced agricultural output. It says these changes can be particularly harmful for women.

If it leads to more poverty and more starvation, the leap is not implausible. It's probably not the #1 issue arising, but in poverty-stricken areas where the social standing of women is not one of equality and respect, when the people start suffering, the women (and children) will be suffering MORE.

See, knowing you hold that opinion makes it much easier to put your post into context.

Still not a good comparison. Companioning is pretty obviously an occupation of privilege. Not the kind that would arise from poverty and desperation.

Apparently that drum sound effect after jokes is called a "Rimshot". Let's just imagine one here.

Firefly is set some 500 years in the future, right ? MY joking point here was that, IF the Firefly 'verse some how comes to reality, then perhaps THIS is where the ORIGINS of companioning got its start. Of course, prostitution already is the world's oldest profession, by maybe what these nut job elected officials are discussing would be the start of more 'mainstreaming' of sex as a accepted financial arrangement.

Work w/ me here, just a little ?

Sheesh!

Nah, just to be frustrating I won't.

Also because I still don't agree, but it's really not that important a point.

I think we can find agreement in the idea that poverty and starvation suck and that Inara is all kinds of dreamy.

I did read it - which is why I posted about your one-sided idiocy.

You just didn't get it.

Nor were you expected to.

Storybook - And here I thought you had at least half a brain , and would think such a colossal waste of time by these Democrats would at least be worthy of some response.

Guess not, on both accounts.

And yes, AR , Inara IS all manner of dreamy.

NIKI2

Gettin' old, but still a hippie at heart...

I bothered with the link, and I'll quote from it. The headline is silly, and trying to paint it as you did is even sillier, but the point is quite valid in that everything which causes difficulties for the population tends to cause more for women than for men:
Quote:

The chances for regional conflict also increase with climate change, the resolution says, because changing weather patterns could lead to migration and refugee crises. It said these sorts of potential conflicts over land will have a disproportionate impact on "the most vulnerable populations including women."

More broadly, the resolution says climate change will hurt "marginalized" women, such as refugees, sexual minorities, adolescent girls, and women and girls with HIV. It also cites Hurricane Katrina as evidence of how climate change can affect women, noting that the storm displaced "over 83 percent of low-income, single mothers" in the region.

There's nothing stupid about that, it's fact and has happened throughout history. Framing it by adding "drive poor women to "transactional sex" for survival" is pretty silly--valid but silly because idiots like you would inevitably grab the headline and call it "DEMOCRATIC insanity".

So you wanna play with the big guys? We can give you numerous cites as to how the climate has already changed to cause agricultural difficulties, regional conflicts and migration of populations; let's see you argue that regional conflicts, refugee crises, population displacement and generally hard times agriculturally do NOT affect marginalized women and cause more poor women to become prostitutes. Come up with a lucid argument that such is NOT true, and maybe someone will pay attention to you, that is other than to respond to your inanities over and over to mock you (which far too many of us take the bait and do far too often). Dare you?

Niki, talking to you about the non existence of global warming is like talking to a religious nut, who says that pretty sunsets or fluffy puppies are proof of their god(s). Man has been fighting for resources since man discovered there WERE resources. This sort of stuff has ZERO to do w/ any imaginary AGW or ACC.

( And AlGore is a whore - Woo hoo! High five! Yeah, baby! ROFLMAO !! )

Reminded me of this thread:

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-middle-east-22473573

Syrian refugees 'sold for marriage' in Jordan

Quote:

Andrew Harper, the Representative of the UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR) in Jordan, is concerned that some of the 500,000 Syrian refugees in the country are increasingly turning to such desperate measures.

"We don't have enough resources to give aid to all those who need it. The vast majority of refugees are women and children. Many of them are not used to going out to work, so survival sex becomes an option."

His office in central Amman is surrounded by hundreds of newly arrived refugees, waiting in long lines to register for aid. He says the UNHCR has intervened with some families who have been offering their daughters up for early marriage.

"I can't think of anything more disgusting than people targeting refugee women… You can call it rape, you can call it prostitution, you can call it what you want but it's preying on the weakest.

"The government and people of Jordan are doing what they can but people are poor and we have to get more resources into the community so families aren't forced into something that deep down I believe they don't want to do."

And not lasting marriages, either. More like rental.

Quote:

"The men are usually between 50 and 80, and they ask for girls who have white skin and blue or green eyes. They want them very young, no older than 16."

She says she has presented more than a hundred Syrian girls to these men, who pay her a fee of US $70 for an introduction, and about US $310 if it results in a marriage.

"If these marriages end in divorce after a short time, that's not my issue, I'm just the matchmaker. As far as I'm concerned it's not prostitution because there's a contract between the groom and bride."

Crises (be they climate or war) often spell bad things for women. Especially in societies where they are already not in a position of equality to begin with. Sexual exploitation is the result.

And it's horrible.

I'm shocked!!!! Shocked, I tell you, that you can actually recognize a bogus story/rumor from reality.

What is this world coming to? Pretty soon you'll see dogs and cats sleeping together.
