Ignoring the idiocy of your need to bring Obama into it:
Quote:

The Pentagon is being evacuated after an earthquake was felt in the Washington, D.C., area.

The USGS said a preliminary magnitude 5.9 earthquake was centered near Mineral, Va.

The quake was also felt in New York City and North Carolina.

Wow. North Carolina...that's quite a ways away (I don't know a lot about geography on the East Coast, there are so many small states, but looking at a map it LOOKS far away). Hope it's not a precursor of anything or there are aftershocks. This isn't very common, is it? The magnitude is small enough we'd probably have fun guessing it out here, but it's big enough to shake up people not used to them!

If there's a regional event, centered near the US Capital, then the where abouts/ actions of the President are relevant.

He was still in Martha's Vineyard, as I understand it. Safe, secure, and out of harm's way.

There was a report that he was on the golf course, and indeed didn't feel the quake. I'll correct the thread title, as updates come in. Until then, it stands.

( Doesn't seem to be any real damage, thankfully, but the scurrying by the national press is sorta funny to watch. This is happening in their front yard, so to speak. They're grabbing at anything, and everything, it seems to show on t.v.

I chuckled at scroll which mentioned that there was no tsunami threat. Good grief )

I live here in Atlanta and dishes on a baker's rack started clattering and my wife came running downstairs saying that the bookcases in the computer room were swaying. I've got a friend who's on a business trip to Ohio and a nephew who lives on Manhattan and we all felt it.

Really ? I didn't feel a thing.

Huh.

Just checked my iPhone app, and there was a 7.0 quake, 3 days ago, near the Vanuatu Islands, in the Pacific. . Missed that one.

Jezus, Fivver, GEORGIA?? Wow, that's impressive for such a small 'quake. Even if the upgrade to 5.8 (and now I'm seeing 5.9) is correct, that's STILL impressive to be felt that far away.

To say the Prez should be on hand when an earthquake strikes is absolutely HYSTERICAL! So you're saying he should have KNOWN when the 'quake was gonna happen and raced off the golf course BEFORE it happened...to do exactly what? (That was a joke, not a question; wherever he was when it hit, there was nothing he could do, idiot.) Gawd, you're pathetic. By the way, "Obama and many of the nation's leaders were out of Washington and on holiday when the quake struck at 1.51pm EDT (5.51 GMT). The shaking was felt on the Martha's Vineyard golf course as Obama was starting a round." Shouldn't all those Republican legislators have been there too? I'm sure there was SOMETHING they could have done, just like Obama should have.

Pizmo, that video is a kick in the head. Can hardly see the camera shaking, and immediately everyone jumps up and heads for the door! Made me giggle. Heard the guy who was speaking when it hit trying to calm them "C'mon, c'mon, I've been through earthquakes in Seattle, all the time..."

What a kick. I don't blame 'em, if you've never been in one, it's startling, but heck, a 5.9 would hardly register out here! If anyone doesn't know what the difference in magnitude means...it goes up exponentially for each .1; so an earthquake that measures 5.0 on the Richter scale has a shaking amplitude 10 times larger than one that measures 4.0. A 5.9 is considered "moderate: At most slight damage to well-designed buildings." A 5.8 is equal to 10.7 kilotons of TNT; a 6.0 to 15 kilotons; a 6.9 (our Loma Prieta back in '89) is equal t0 340kilotons.

I love it; photo of people evacuating buildings on Pennsylvania Ave.:

Sorry to tease; I'm sure I would totally freak out in a hurricane or tornado!

A friend of mine in Virginia posted a pic of the "damage" to their property; the damage consisted of a plastic lawn chair being knocked over.

Within an hour, the pic had been made into this meme:

Now we're talking about organizing a benefit for the chair, and maybe getting Lee Greenwood or Toby Keith to sing a patriotic song about it. I suggested the chorus should involve the idea of there now being "one less chair at the table", signifying the unimaginable loss.

Glad everyone is okay. I'm curious as to how an earthquake that isn't all that big could be felt so far away. Byte would probably have the answers since she's all smart and stuff. :)

Niki, I live in OR, my city gets an earthquake aproximately once a decade, so not very often, but when we get them they are big enough to feel, I've been through three earthquakes that I remember, two of which everyone felt and were noticeable, one of which just made the hanging plants swing. So I don't get them often up here but I know what they're like. Yeah, I'd totally freak out in a hurricane.

Freedom is Important because People are Important

Hello,

It seems that the Washington Monument was damaged in the Earthquake. I think it's perfectly acceptable for these people to show fear in the wake of a quake.

After all, precisely because they are from places that rarely see quakes, the structures where they live are likely not built with an eye towards quake damage.

I would wager that their buildings are much more prone to failure from a quake than a building in California. Just as I'm sure my parent's Florida home is better equipped to handle Hurricanes than the home of someone living deep inland.

If there was a quake here in the valley, even a small one, I'd worry quite a bit about what sorts of damage it was doing to my home or the business offices where I work.

Also, east coast faults line up a mite differently. The quake's energy isn't dissipated as quickly as in California so a smaller quake will be felt across a larger distance. I was to far south to feel this and I have never felt one before, but I would guess an East Coast earthquake might feel bigger than one of the same magnitude on the West Coast.

Anthony, I take your point--which by the way my husband made last night as well. It's just funny for us, given we're familiar with them, and a 5.9 barely registers unless its epicenter was somewhere nearby or shallow enough that it really made an impact.

We get 'quakes all the time, and most of them we're not even aware of. Choey (who came from Michigan) and I were discussing it last night, and she said she hasn't felt a single one of the 'quakes we've had in the two-plus years she's been here with us. Just between August 17th and today we've had 31 "weebers" in CA...admittedly the biggest one was 3.0, and we didn't feel a single one, but that gives you an idea of the frequency. They've been saying for DECADES that we're right on the cusp of The Big One, and no doubt eventually it WILL arrive, but we don't think about it.

I can't even remember any but two of ours...the Loma Prieta, of course, which we felt pretty good right here in Marin, and one while I was at the vet's office one year. Forget its magnitude--he's got floor-to-ceiling windows and we all kind of looked up when it hit, then started guessing the magnitude. Dr. Rob was working on a dog at the time, and just went right on working; as I recall, he hollered out his guess at the magnitude without even pausing.

It's just a fact of life, just as tornadoes are in Tornado Alley and hurricanes are on the East Coast. I should be fair and say that a 5.9 would certainly be worth paying attention to, even here, it just made me giggle, that's all. I hope nobody was hurt, that's all.

We have sandstorms here. Or dust storms. I think they call them Haboobs.

It's big news when it happens.

Happy, that's interesting. I never knew that before--but then I never knew about the New Madrid until a friend who lives out there told me; if THAT puppy goes, we'll ALL feel it!
Quote:

In a report filed in November 2008, The U.S. Federal Emergency Management Agency warned that a serious earthquake in the New Madrid Seismic Zone could result in "the highest economic losses due to a natural disaster in the United States," further predicting "widespread and catastrophic" damage across Alabama, Arkansas, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Mississippi, Missouri, Oklahoma, Texas, and particularly Tennessee, where a 7.7 magnitude quake or greater would cause damage to tens of thousands of structures affecting water distribution, transportation systems, and other vital infrastructure. The earthquake is expected to also result in many thousands of fatalities, with more than 4,000 of the fatalities expected in Memphis alone.

According to some scientists, however, that is nothing compared to what an 8.0 earthquake could do to the New Madrid Region. An earthquake of that size on the New Madrid Fault would destroy 60 percent of Memphis, killing tens of thousands and causing over $50 billion dollars in property damage in the city alone. Wiki

If anyone out there didn't know about the New Madrid, my apologies, I don't mean to scare you. It just came as a BIG shock to me when I learned about it.

ETA: Thanx Happy, that explains my wondering why it was felt so far away. Yes, we have different tectonic action than Back East...I'm still amazed it was felt so far away, but that's partly I know because I don't have a good grasp of East Coast geology, and California is so long that I have trouble grasping the distance in all the little states on that coast. Your explanation helps me understand.

Yup, Anthony, that's about it. Tho' to be fair, a 5.9 would have made the news here, too; that's a "moderate" 'quake so I was being pretty unfair to tease about it.

We had "dust storms" in Afghanistan--there they're called "Shamals". But they're REALLY serious; if a car was left out in the desert in one, it would literally strip the car's exterior completely! Humans couldn't survive them without some kind of cover. They showed a mock-up of one in the movie "Hidalgo", and it's pretty impressive.

I can't resist; I just found these:
Quote:

Best Tweets About East Coast Quake:

"There was a 5.8 earthquake in Washington. Obama wanted it to be a 3.4, but the Republicans wanted 5.8, so he compromised."

"Like any savvy super-villain in a time of distress, Ghadafi unleashed his earthquake machine."

"Earthquake made me spill my tea! I'm available for interviews."

"Hurricane Irene has a posse."

"Earthquakes are caused by shifting tectonic plates, cups, and silverware."

"Just like New Yorkers to feel an earthquake from another state and act like it was centered in NY."

"And this is why Presidents shouldn't take vacations" #seewhathappens (duplicative, admittedly, but THIS was a JOKE!)

Just for Raptor: "DEVELOPING: Darrell Issa launches inquiry into why Obama didn't prevent the #earthquake"

"Aren't animals supposed to do cool pre-earthquake tricks like walk around on their hind legs or smoke cigarettes? My dog did NOTHING!"

"Sorry East Coast! Drunk Hulk"

"Bachmann out first with statement: as President she’ll lower quakes to 2.9...”

"my etch-a-sketch gallery! It's RUINED!"

"SORRY LIBYAN REBELS, THE GROUND OVER HERE SHOOK FOR LIKE 15 SECONDS. GOOD LUCK W/ EVERYTHING, WE DON'T CARE ANYMORE."

"Earthquake in D.C. Don't panic. A Super Committee will be formed at some point to possibly decide what to do."

Photo of "damage" from East Coast 'quake

Hey hey HEY! I'm not the only one, as it turns out:
Quote:

East Coast Americans were mocked by their West Coast compatriots for making such a fuss about the type of earthquake that they have to deal with frequently.

While Tuesday's earthquake was the largest on the East Coast since 1944, California alone has seen 35 quakes of that size since then.

The Los Angeles Times ran an article headlined "NY feels quake on a different scale!" "Local TV news had wall-to-wall coverage, but little to report," said the author, Steve Lopez. "I kept hoping some more interesting news would break, like a car chase."

And here you go, in retaliation:
Quote:

East coasters snapped back, “Hey, West Coasters mocking the EastCoast Quake: We'll remember this when an inch of snow paralyzes your city.”
Fair enough!

I gotta admit, that is one of the best. Note the mention of same:
Quote:

Fortunately the East Coast was able to laugh also, with hundreds checking in to Earthquakepocalypse on Foursquare.

Viral images quickly began to circulate demonstrating "earthquake devastation" - such as television remote controls tumbling from tables to the floor, and tins of food being dislodged from supermarket shelves - with mocking captions. Images of the Washington Monument also went viral after rumours began circulating that the earthquake had left it tilted.

Many virals began parodying the earthquake with natural disaster film posters.

One "never forget" graphic, in the style of those created after terrorist attacks or natural disasters, pictured a bald eagle, the Stars and Stripes, and a piece of garden furniture that had been tipped over.

"Breaking: Obama administration points out they ‘inherited’ fault lines from previous administrations."

"Fox News claims the Washington monument is leaning to the right, MSNBC claims it's leaning to the left. More news at 11."

Where I live is pretty safe, only occasional earthquakes, a small tornado every 10 years or so, but never in my city), a good snowfall every five years or so, we do get little ones sometimes though, maybe once a year if we're lucky). ...

But ya know what we have that no one else on here can probably boast? A volcano taht erupts. Mt. St. Helens is an hour and a half away. I wasn't around for the big eruption, but in 04 she started having minor activity and eruptions and lava movement again, lasted on and off about six months, two times it blew plumes of smoke in the air and my parents could see it from my house. I couldn't see it but that doesn't count. Even so its not something we worry a lot about.

Niki, your tweets were hy-larious, especially the bit about how the east coasters will laugh their arses off next we freak out over an inch of snow, that is so true in my city, since snow isn't a common occurance for us.

And I learnt about New Madrid last summer, it was very interesting to me since I've always been interested in earthquakes and volcanoes.

Gettin' old, but still a hippie at heart...

Riona, we share something else besides liking shows about animals. I LOVE volcanoes and earthquakes; I even took an "adult ed" class at the local college on them long ago. I remember St. Helen's clearly, seeing that whole side just slide down left my jaw on the ground, and I know you've had some rumblings since then. That's DEFINITELY something I wouldn't want to encounter, in any way, shape or form!

It's probably only our citizens in Hawaii who can match you on that one, and both of you are most welcome to them!

And yes, I got a huge kick out of the snow remark, I thought it was wonderfully appropriate and a fantastic comeback. I told Jim about it when he got home, and he guffawed (something he rarely does). They certainly got us on that one--ESPECIALLY us coastal Californians. You guys actually DO get snow, but we have to drive a few hours to even get near it, so it was particularly appropos.

GEEZER

Keep the Shiny side up

There's actually a good bit of damage in the D.C. area. The National Cathedral lost several gargoyles and other exterior decoration and had some roof damage. The Washington Monument has cracks in the top big enough to see through and will be closed for some time. Union Station has cracks in the ceiling. Several schools in Prince George county are closed for repairs to brickwork.

I was at the Faberge exhibit in the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts in Richmond when the quake occurred, and it felt like a train going by for about 30 seconds; nothing like the quakes I've experienced in California. No damage to the Museum, and no chance to snatch an egg. When we got home to Fairfax County yesterday everything was intact, but some pictures hung on the wall were crooked.

Damn; sorry you didn't get the chance to grab an egg, that would be cool!

As to damage; of course there was damage here and there. The East Coast isn't BUILT for 'quakes, so no surprise there. Doesn't make the 'quake any more significant.

Not to mention that we both love this space Western show called Firefly Niki, :) Yeah, Mt. St. Helens isn't something we worry a lot about, it hasn't erupted or rumbled since about 05, during a six month period right at the end of high school (04) it was rumbling and letting out a little stream of lava which stayed in the caldera and formed a structure called the whaleback, it never overflowed the sides or anything, but it spewed steam on two occasions as I said before. I think about that mountain more now since we've bought a cabin up near there.

I hope they can fix the cracks in the monuments.

Hey Geezer, sounds like you live in VA? How'd you fair in the hurricane? Maybe you've said on that other thread, I'll check.
