OR...

Did I stay sober for this????

A "sure thing" union job gone...

K-Mart would be glad to hire me for 8 bucks an hour overnight for 24 hours a week....

A BS part time temp Security Job is all I've got...

Seriously... why haven't I smoked weed since April of 2011?

I sure as hell had no presence here to bother the rabid Left Wingers since I didn't care then.....

I got the house already....

Bankrupcy can't take my house, right?

Maybe I should just start smoking again and not giving a shit, right?

It's not as if I haven't thought about it every single day for the last 378 days.

WTF does it matter if I'd be just as well off smoking bud as I am without it without any jobs that are actually good enough to drug test me asking me for an interview?

The ONLY jobs I seem qualified for, even with over 10 years of workforce experience, without a degree are jobs that 16 year old kids could get.

IQ and any past work experience doesn't matter when you don't have a college degree.

What they all want to know is....

Are you (not) white....

Are you a veteran....

Are you on food stamps....

Are you a felon (surprisingly, this is most often positive, rather than negative when you don't have a degree, for tax purposes)

I gotta make my own business stat....

The real world is going to break me with the taxes I never benefit from....

HERO

Feel bad for you. In 1996 I dropped out of college, flunked out is a better term. Spent years as a twenty something broken down old security guard. Then I woke up, got my act together, and started figuring out how to make it work.

First college. I begged, pleaded, and fought my way back to get a second chance...on academic probation. I spent months preparing my mind reading 5-6 newspapers/day and 3-5 books/week. History, fiction, biographies, philosophy, science, collage textbooks...anything.

Summer school, job, student loans. I finished my last two full years of college in 11 months making Deans list grades. Started with a .181 gpa, graduated with a .271 degree in Political Science and History.

Did I mention Law School? And a full scholarship. Worked my way thru, turns out security guard is the perfect study job. Wrote papers and briefed cases sitting on an empty truck loading dock at midnight on my weekends. Also did an internship, which led to my current job bringing justice to my city.

Moral...it's hard, but it gets better.

Maybe smoking weed would have made me feel better, but really it just freezes time so the world can pass you by. I've seen people prosper despite their drug use, but never from it.

So, get off your ass, quit complaining and figure something out. If as you say you could do better with a degree, get one. Want a business, start one. Want a better job, find one.

Good luck.

Well Hero, it's not like it was back when. In THIS economy it is so hard to find and keep a job and so easy to lose one.

6ix, if you're really worried about losing your house, start looking into bankruptcy laws. They were modified (by Repubs) to make it much harder for individuals to declare, there is some sort of upper limit on the amount of $$ you can write off your residence. Please write back (privately if you wish) and let me know how things are going.

Hahaha! Yeah, those "Repubs" that modified the bankruptcy laws included both of my state's democratic senators!

I think that's right. Usually when you declare bankruptcy they take the stuff you haven't paid off. But sometimes repo guys are overzealous, and if you have a really substantial debt, the bank may try to pressure you to sell for the money, or just take it out from under you if you can't get a lawyer to dispute it.

Why are you thinking about bankruptcy? My understanding was you didn't have debt.

Freedom is Important because People are Important

Hello,

If I were you, I'd take the security job. My experience in the industry was that people routinely failed to show up on time to their posts, or failed to show up at all. There was very high turnover. This allows you to pick up extra hours. Also, once it's seen that you are one of the reliable ones who can be counted on, pay increases (however small) begin to occur during evaluation periods. Once you have experience, you can apply for other security work, and meanwhile you are likely to be promoted to supervisory status if you do well and show some talent.

Competence is so incredibly rare that if you show some, you'll get more hours and more money, in my experience. In fact, in most cases you simply have to show a lack of incompetence and you'll be recognized. During my years in security, I was constantly (every few months) picking up new assignments, more money, and eventually a promotion- not because I was a special talent, but because nobody else working there was.

Hello,

I wanted to add... I think you've possibly benefited from taxes in the form of public welfare programs that you participated in.

NIKI2

Gettin' old, but still a hippie at heart...

Let's add public schooling, street lights, roads and bridges and the transportation they run on, among a myriad of other things from we all benefit...

Which in no way improves your situation. So many are suffering now, it boggles the mind. I guess I'd say take the job and keep looking, as I hear over and over that people who are unemployed have a harder time finding a job, and even that employers reject out of hand people who've been out of work for long time (which is amazing!).

That's not very encouraging advice, I guess all I can say is I hope things get better for you asap. And no, smoking dope is no improvement, as it lessens your abilities and nowadays so many employers give drug tests to potention employees. I sure understand the desire tho'!

BLUEHANDEDMENACE

As a recruiter in consumer products, I can confirm the part about unemployed candidates being perceived as less desirable, sometimes unacceptably less desirable. Especially for those who are more advanced in their careers, say over 50...its a nasty catch 22 they get caught in.

Companies want young, trainable, and potentially 20 year people...they pass on highly qualified middle-aged candidates who can probably run circles around the youngins. Then they wont hire the guy the next year, because, well, he's been unemployed for over a year, whats wrong with him?

We even have one client company who refuses to consider a candidate who is not currently employed...in this marketplace! My boss calls it the most absurd thing he has ever heard in 25 years of recruiting.

Having said that, the advice given here, take what u can get, and do it well, is really the best advice possible. That, and NETWORKING NETWORKING NETWORKING. I cant stress enough the concept that every single person u meet could be the one who knows about the right opening for u. Involve everyone u can in your job search.

Hang in there Jack, jobsearching is the most depressing thing I've ever done, its almost like the process is designed to make you feel like luh suh. But you're pretty cool and I think you can find something, keep trying. And if you want to start your own business you could, maybe that's the right answer for you. About the mk you've said you like not being on it, even though its hard to not use it. Keep trying and do your best, that's all we can do in life.

I assume you're my pal until you let me know otherwise.
