Sanctions Tighten the Noose Over Russia’s Economic Lifeline: Yuan Shortage Looms

Russia’s reliance on China’s yuan has become a cornerstone of its economic activities since Western sanctions heavily impacted the country’s global financial access following its invasion of Ukraine in 2022. As Moscow was cut off from the dollar and euro markets, China emerged as a vital economic partner. The yuan, China’s currency, soon became the most traded foreign currency in Russia, allowing businesses to maintain crucial trade and financial operations.

However, this vital lifeline may soon face a serious challenge. The United States, in its ongoing efforts to pressure Russia economically, has steadily expanded its sanctions. In June 2024, U.S. sanctions forced the Moscow Exchange to suspend trading in dollars and euros, while a Treasury Department license temporarily allowing some transactions will expire on October 12.

THUGR: tick tock says the clock.

And this is the reason for having the central banks be currency clearing houses.

If that happens, de- dollarization takes a giant step forward.

It tolls for thee."

I'm going to laugh at everyone telling me I should have kept slaving away 9-5 for
years and keep stacking that cash on top of my already more than adequate pile if that happens.
Then I'll laugh even harder as they try to pay off all their loans for all the shit they
bought on credit that they didn't need with worthless currency.

The Russian economy can’t sustain Putin’s war on Ukraine much longer, expert says

Russia's economy is in much worse shape than it looks, potentially forcing Vladimir Putin to stop waging war on Ukraine as early as next year, according to economist and author Anders Åslund.

In a recent op-ed on Project Syndicate, he cited financial, technological, and demographic headwinds weighing on a Russian economy that's headed for "near stagnation," and estimated Western sanctions are reducing GDP by 2%-3% each year.

Ukraine had better win the war soon. They get zero US funding come January 20th.

I believe in solving problems, not sharing them.

That video was useless. I skipped thru it, but he spent the first 20 minutes (of 40) telling us how beautiful and clean the cities are, how many summer festivals and activities are going on. The next 10 minutes trying to convince us that this is only the APPEARANCE of doing well. (By that couterintuitive logic, if Russia is doing so badly bc its cities look so great, then the USA must be doing fabulously bc our cities look like bombed out wastelands filled with the homeless and their feces.)

He then spends a few minutes hawking his Patren acct.

And finally he ALLUDES to things like oil and gas revenues, teachers' pay, food prices, the government budget, wait time for doctors, etc. but HE NEVER DISCUSSES THEM.

So, what IS the wait time for a doctor, Konstantin? Is it better, worse, or the same as 5 years ago?
What IS the Russian federal budget? Are support expenditures really going downward? How are pensioners doing?
That teacher's paycheck? Is it keeping up with inflation?

He says he believes in numbers.
So why doesn't he discuss them?

From what I hear, "the numbers" paint a complex picture bc in some aspects Russia is doing GREAT. The thing that is holding Russia back is labor shortages. When Russian soldiers are demobilized (and hopefully reintegrated into civilian society) production should improve and inflation decrease.

He probably had to end on that note bc the numbers didn't fully make his case.

*****

The important thing coming up is the BRICS conference in Kazan. Will the BRICS nations and wannabes find a way to begin wriggling out from under USA's financialist/ currency bullying, able to trade more freely amongst themselves and still be able to trade with the west?
