You know, I realize Trump's background was litigated thoroughly in 2016, but if there's a debate I sure wish Kamala Harris would bring it up again. I mean, this is a guy who was brought up as a spoiled rich kid attending a string of private schools and then avoiding Vietnam because of bone spurs that mysteriously appeared in his heels. His millionaire father installed him as president of the family real estate business and bankrolled his ventures, but within a few years, he blew it all by wildly mismanaging a football team, the Plaza Hotel, the Eastern Shuttle, a string of casinos, and more. He was forced into multiple bankruptcy proceedings and his banks put him on a strict allowance until he clawed his way barely back to solvency—leaving behind a trail of unpaid bills and fleeced mom-and-pop investors. Finally, he inherited more money when his father died and has lived in luxury ever since. He has a cook to prepare his meals, a butler to serve them, servants to make his bed, a chauffeur to drive him around, and personal flight attendants to fetch him Diet Cokes on his plane. His golf courses are money losers, his "charitable foundation" was shut down for fraud, Trump University was a con, he owes nearly $100 million to a woman he sexually assaulted, and he owes $500 million to the state of New York for systematically lying to banks about his wealth. Now he wants to be president again.

Donald Trump Lawsuit Could Be Heading For Jury Trial

Trump is suing the ABC network claiming host George Stephanopoulos defamed him during an interview with GOP Representative Nancy Mace by claiming on multiple occasions that Trump was found liable for the rape of E. Jean Carroll.

But Trump was found liable for the sexual assault and defamation of Carroll in May 2023. The former magazine columnist, who was awarded $5 million in damages, had claimed that Trump raped her in a New York City department store in the 1990s.

The jury on the case did not rule that Trump had raped Carroll. However, in August 2023, presiding Judge Lewis Kaplan clarified that Carroll's claims that Trump had raped her were "substantially true," and that any legal distinction between rape and sexual assault were "minimal." Carroll also won a second defamation against Trump in January and was awarded $83.3 million in damages.

It's hard to believe, but Trump is getting more ignorant over time. Or maybe his memory is getting worse.

This came during the same press conference where he refused to say how he planned to vote on Florida's initiative to overturn its 6-week abortion ban. What a coward. My guess is that he'll stay silent on the initiative all the way to Election Day, at which point he'll announce that he voted against it. That will be too late to do him any harm with moderates and will assure evangelicals that he's still on their side.

Tim Walz and the Weird Politics of Free School Lunches

You could say that Tim Walz became the Democratic vice-presidential nominee with one weird trick — that is, by using that word to describe Donald Trump and JD Vance, a categorization that went viral. In his maiden campaign speech he upgraded it a bit further to “creepy and weird as hell.” (If you think that’s over the top, have you seen Trump’s bizarre rant speculating about whether Joe Biden is going to seize back his party’s presidential nomination?)

But Walz is more than a meme-maker. He has also been an activist governor of Minnesota with a strong progressive agenda. And I’d like to focus on one key element of that agenda: requiring that public and charter schools provide free breakfasts and lunches to all students.

Perhaps not incidentally, child care has long been a signature issue for Kamala Harris, and Walz’s policies may have played a role in his selection as her running mate.

In any case, free school meals are a big deal in pure policy terms. They have also met fierce Republican opposition. And the partisan divide over feeding students tells you a lot about the difference between the parties, and why you really, really shouldn’t describe the MAGA movement as “populist.”

Now, even many conservatives generally support, or at least claim to support, the idea of cheap or free lunches for poor schoolchildren. The National School Lunch Program goes all the way back to 1946, when it passed with bipartisan support and President Harry Truman signed it into law.

Why should the government help feed kids? Part of the answer is social justice: Children don’t choose to be born into families that can’t or won’t feed them adequately, and it seems unfair that they should suffer. Part of the answer is pragmatic: Children who don’t receive adequate nutrition will grow up to be less healthy and less productive adults than those who do, hurting society as a whole. So spending on child nutrition is arguably as much an investment in the future as building roads and bridges.

There’s a strong case that in general child nutrition programs more than pay for themselves by creating a healthier, higher-earning future work force. In other words, this is one area where there really is a free lunch.

Schools, then, should feed students who might otherwise not get enough to eat. But why make free meals available to all children, rather than only to children from low-income households? There are multiple reasons, all familiar to anyone who has looked into the problems of antipoverty policy in general.

First, trying to save money by limiting which children you feed turns out to be expensive and cumbersome; it requires that school districts deal with reams of paperwork as they try to determine which children are eligible. It also imposes a burden on parents, requiring that they demonstrate their neediness.

Additionally, restricting free meals to children whose parents can prove their poverty creates a stigma that can deter students from getting aid even when they’re entitled to receive it. I know about this effect from family history: My mother, who grew up in the Depression, used to talk about her shame at not being able to afford new shoes because her parents, although just as poor as her classmates’ parents, couldn’t bring themselves to apply for government assistance.

And it’s not as if feeding children is prohibitively expensive. So if you want to make sure that children get enough to eat, having schools offer free meals to all their students, without an income test, would seem to be simple common sense.

But Republicans in general aren’t on board. The Minnesota law that Walz signed passed essentially along party lines. The people behind Project 2025, in particular, don’t approve. (Yes, despite denials, Project 2025 is a very good guide to what a second Trump administration might do.) The project’s magnum opus, “Mandate for Leadership,” whose 900 pages lays out a detailed policy agenda, singles out feeding students as something that should be reined in. “Federal school meals increasingly resemble entitlement programs,” it warns, as if this is self-evidently a bad thing. A bit farther down, it reads, “The U.S.D.A. should not provide meals to students during the summer unless students are taking summer-school classes.” I guess being hungry isn’t a problem when school is out.

Stories like this are why my hackles rise whenever people call MAGA a populist movement. The people who will almost certainly make policy if Trump wins are as committed as ever to a right-wing economic agenda of cutting taxes on the wealthy while slashing programs that help Americans in need — including programs that help children.

In addition to being cruel, this agenda tends to be unpopular. Most Americans support providing all students with meals, regardless of their income, just as most Americans now support the Affordable Care Act, which Trump will very likely again try to destroy if returned to office.

But the American right lives in an echo chamber that normalizes views on both economic and social policy that are very much at odds with what a majority of voters want. Those extreme views often fly under the radar. But sometimes they do attract attention. And when they do, many people find them … weird.

In a post to X, formerly Twitter, on Thursday, Weissmann, a law professor at New York University and a former FBI general counsel, said that Trump's plethora of legal woes were likely adding pressure ahead of November, and warned that the stress would lead to a "more violent" version of Trump.

"GIVEN THE DISTINCT PROSPECT OF JAIL, TRUMP IS GOING TO GET UGLIER, MORE RACIST, MORE VIOLENT, MORE CRIMINAL," Weissmann wrote, who said he was writing in all caps in order to make his point "emphatically."

Yesterday a reporter asked Donald Trump if he thought Kamala Harris's career had been helped by her relationship in the 1990s with powerful California politician Willie Brown, Mayor of San Francisco. This was a perfect opportunity for Trump to throw out a remark about Harris sleeping her way to the top, or something equally Trumpish and obnoxious, but he didn't.

Instead he gapped out and said that he knew Willie Brown very well. He doesn't. Then he hallucinated a story about almost being in a helicopter crash with Brown, which obviously didn't happen either.

However, it turns out he was once in a helicopter with Jerry Brown, who bears no conceivable resemblance to Willie Brown except for his last name. And it was just a routine helicopter ride. No crash, no emergency, no anything.

Everybody's initial response to this was: Huh? Their second response was: What a bizarre guy, lying about everything.

But this is almost certainly not a lie. Nor is it likely that he just got the two Browns mixed up since he was responding to a question about a relationship with Kamala Harris. Willie Brown famously had one; Jerry Brown didn't.

It's all very weird. Listen to the video. It doesn't sound like a lie. It sounds like Trump knew exactly who the reporter was asking about and just hallucinated his entire answer: knowing Brown "very well"; going down in a rough helicopter landing with him; and Brown saying nasty things about Harris.

Trump has gotten to the point where he doesn't just forget a thing or two. That happens to all us oldsters. He literally invents entire incidents in his mind and believes they're real. I don't think he even knows he's doing it. Can you imagine what he's going to be like four years from now?

UPDATE: Bizarrely, today Trump insisted to the New York Times that the story was true and he has "flight records" to prove it:

When asked to produce the flight records, Mr. Trump responded mockingly, repeating the request in a sing-song voice. As of early Friday evening, he had not provided them.

I think it's safe to say he will never produce these records.

To understand the rise of Donald Trump, you don’t need to go to a diner in the Midwest or read “Hillbilly Elegy,” J.D. Vance’s memoir.

You just need to know these basic facts:

In 1980, white people accounted for about 80 percent of the U.S. population.

In 2024, white people account for about 58 percent of the U.S. population.

Trump appeals to white people gripped by demographic hysteria. Especially older white people who grew up when white people represented a much larger share of the population. They fear becoming a minority.

While the Census Bureau says there are still 195 million white people in America and that they are still the majority, the white population actually declined slightly in 2023, and experts believe that they will become a minority sometime between 2040 and 2050.

Every component of the Trump-Republican agenda flows from these demographic fears.

The mainstream press has been afraid to say this directly and succinctly. Political pundits keep looking for other causes; after Trump’s upset win in 2016, they thought that “Hillbilly Elegy” was the answer. I read the book in its entirety — something I doubt most campaign reporters can claim — and it offers nothing about Trump or the economic anxieties in the American heartland that supposedly led to Trump’s election. It’s a personal memoir about his dysfunctional family, and the closest thing Vance gets to a political message comes when he writes that his relatives screwed up their lives on their own and have no one else to blame.

But the political press somehow concluded that the book’s narrative unlocked the key to understanding Trump voters, and the ambitious Vance, now Trump’s running mate, didn’t bother to correct them.

The press hasn’t done any better in the years since. It has now failed to adequately cover Trump for three straight presidential campaigns.

The evidence of Trump’s racism is so overwhelming that the press and many voters now seem to consider it old news, shrugging at his constant stream of bigoted comments. That is exactly what Trump is counting on.

Trump has been a racist his whole life; the Justice Department sued him for racial discrimination in the 1970s. In the 1980s, he took out newspaper ads calling for the death penalty in the case of the Central Park Five — Black and Latino men falsely accused in a New York City rape case — and he has stubbornly refused to apologize to the exonerated men.

He first gained prominence as a political figure for being an obsessive “birther,” propagating false conspiracy claims that Barack Obama wasn’t born in the United States and thus couldn’t legally be president.

Trump remains obsessed with race and is constantly looking for ways to discredit and dehumanize any and all minorities: African Americans, Mexicans, Native Americans, Muslims, Asians. He’s claimed that Mexican immigrants are murderers and rapists, that Obama was the founder of ISIS, that Covid-19 was the “kung flu,” that migrants crossing the southern border have been released from mental institutions, and that Haitians probably have AIDS.

When Trump first emerged as a presidential contender, many Republican Party leaders claimed they were disgusted by his blatant racism.

Now they embrace it.

Dominated by Trump, the Republican Party adheres to policies designed both to maintain white political power and increase the white percentage of the nation’s population.

Once you understand that it is all about white power — especially white male power — the Trump-Republican agenda begins to make sense.

The right-wing obsession over racial demographics becomes obvious in the “pro-natalism” movement, which advocates for conservatives to have more children to take control of society. The mission of the movement is “to build an army of like-minded people, starting with their own children, who will reject a whole host of changes wrought by liberal democracy,” according to a fascinating recent story in Politico.

For the right wing, pro-natalism means looking for every possible means to increase the white percentage of the nation’s population. Through this lens, it’s not hard to see why Republicans remain virulently anti-immigration and strictly opposed to abortion.

Those two issues may appear unrelated, but in fact Republican positions on both stem at least in part from white demographic fears. Republicans want to halt the rise in the nonwhite population by curbing immigration. At the same time, they hope their abortion bans will boost domestic white birth rates — staving off white demographic decline. They also want to ban contraceptives and no-fault divorce, forcing women to stay in marriages and have more children.

If one wants to know how dumb the average Democrat voter is, they don't need to look further than the polling that shows only 24.9% of Americans think we're on the right track in the "Direction of the Country" polling yet we're looking at another near 50/50 split in the popular vote.

They'll just keep voting for more of the same because they are stupid, easily manipulated people.

Increasingly, the Trump–Republican Party has become explicit in its embrace of policies designed to expand white power and appease white nationalists. In fact, several of the right-wing authors of Project 2025, the Heritage Foundation’s plan for a second Trump term filled with extremist proposals, have white supremacist backgrounds and writings. Trump has tried to disown Project 2025, but its authors include former Trump administration officials. Whether Trump officially endorses Project 2025 or not, it remains a good barometer of the white nationalist hold on the Republican Party.

Why isn't the media reporting on Trump's increasing dementia?

Today, Trump held an hourlong news conference in the main room at Mar-a-Lago. He insulted Kamala Harris’s intelligence, lied about the state of the U.S. economy, and claimed the country would be in mortal danger if he didn’t win the election.

In other words, the usual Trump torrent of lies and insults.

But what got my attention was his description of his departure from the White House as a “peaceful” transfer of power, his insistence that the group that mounted the assault on the Capitol was relatively small, and his boast that attendance at his January 6 rally preceding the assault was larger than the crowd Martin Luther King Jr. drew on the National Mall for his “I Have a Dream” speech.

“If you look at Martin Luther King, when he did his speech, his great speech, and you look at ours — same real estate, same everything, same number of people, if not — we had more.”

Friends, these are not the statements of a sane person.

Trump is showing growing signs of dementia.

In April, he spoke to a rally in Schnecksville, Pennsylvania, about the famed Civil War battle at Gettysburg. Trump told the audience:

“Gettysburg, what an unbelievable battle that was. It was so much, and so interesting, and so vicious and horrible, and so beautiful in so many different ways— it represented such a big portion of the success of this country."

Trump continued, “Gettysburg, wow — I go to Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, to look and to watch."

During the last months of the Republican primaries, he repeatedly claimed that his opponent Nikki Haley was in charge of Capitol security on January 6. (Haley never had any connection to Capitol security.)

He has repeatedly confused whom he ran against in the past, such as stating, “With Obama, we won an election that everyone said couldn’t be won.” (Trump defeated Hillary Clinton in 2016.)

Last September, Trump suggested that the way to prevent wildfires in California’s forest lands is to keep them damp. Here are his words:

“They say that there’s so much water up north that I want to have the overflow areas go into your forests and dampen your forests, because if you dampen your forests you're not gonna have these forest fires that are burning at levels that nobody’s ever seen.”

In October, Trump warned his supporters that Biden will lead America into World War Two.

Can I be frank? It appears that Trump — with a family history of dementia — is increasingly unhinged.

He has claimed that Hezbollah, the Iranian-backed militant group, is “very smart.” That whales are being killed by windmills. That he won all 50 states in 2020. That he defeated Barack Obama in 2016. That the outgoing chair of the Joint Chiefs of Staff should be executed.

The most telling evidence of Trump’s growing dementia is found in his paranoid thirst for revenge, on which he is centering his entire presidential campaign.

On November 11, he pledged to a crowd of supporters in Claremont, New Hampshire, that:

“We will root out the communists, Marxists, fascists and the radical left thugs that live like vermin within the confines of our country, that lie and steal and cheat on elections and will do anything possible — they’ll do anything, whether legally or illegally, to destroy America and to destroy the American dream.”

Are these the words of a sane person? Or of an aging paranoid megalomaniac?

Even if it’s unclear to which category Trump belongs, shouldn’t this question be central to the coverage of his campaign for reelection?

I’m no physician, and I have no business providing a diagnosis, but the weight of the evidence suggests Trump is suffering from early dementia. So why isn’t the media covering this — at least with the same intensity they covered Biden’s apparent difficulties?

When I’ve asked members of the media, they say Trump’s malfunctioning brain is “old news.”

But just because Trump has shown mental instability in the past doesn’t make his mental problems any less relevant now. They’re more relevant. He appears even more delusional than before.

If Biden’s difficulties were fair game, why isn’t Trump’s apparent mental decline front and center?

The growing evidence of Trump’s dementia and paranoia poses a clear potential danger to the future of America — if he’s reelected.

At the least, the media should be investigating and reporting on it. Right?

Because it's not true.

If it were, with all the other bullshit the Media has "reported" about Trump over the years, they'd be beating that drum every single second of every single day.

When you watch Kamala get her "brat" ass handed to her by Trump in the first debate, anybody who was "reporting" on Trump's "increasing dementia" is going to lose any "credibility" they had left.

Nobody wants to follow CNN into the flames.

They really all need to just STFU until after the first debate right now as it is. Nothing is worth reporting until that day since nobody is willing to put her feet to the fire. At least anybody that Kamala is willing to give any airtime to.
