Laundry done and a walk in the rain. 3 cards posted. One to the US, one to the UK and one local to me but I don't see these people. Still have 2 and possibly 4 to go into the mail.

Also got my calendar up for next year and for the end of this year, I need a refill on one of my meds. Also wrote a list of medical things for early next year.

Looks like we'll be taking in a stray dog for the weekend. He's one of those really wide pit bulls, really scary looking. But it turns out he's quite mellow. He seems old and kind of sad, and with a large tumor on his hind leg. We think he was dumped in the neighborhood.

Our dog just happened to go in heat! So "Buddy" will have to stay in the breezeway. Fortunately a very kind woman drove home and brought back a large, deep dog bed (something Buddy can stay warm in) and a blanket as well as dog food, so Buddy at least has a comfy place to sleep.

Naturally animal control is closed. I'll bet they're closed tomorrow too, and I imagine they'll be closed Tuesday and for sure Wednesday.

I had just convinced hubby into letting Buddy stay in our breezeway (that tooka couple of hours) and went out to get him, but when I got there somebody had already picked him up.

There had been four extremely kind people around him earlier, getting him off the road, reassuring him, getting him water and all kinds of stuff, so I hope it was one of those gentle people who came back for him.

Fare well, Buddy. I hope you found the good home that your personality deserves.

*****

In the meantime, and in keeping with small goals ... dear daughter potted up the paperwhites, and I finished setting that last paver and leveling a couple of others. Turns out I had rotated the next to last paver by 90deg, and it didn't QUITE fit that way. I also knocked that stabilized sand off the paver edges, it made the pavers look a lot better.

Back and done for today. Missed the rain. Got myself a treat for lunch while I was out. There is a little sushi bar in the local mall, they make sushi and do bento boxes. My treat was some deep fried prawns and boy were they good. Not something I can eat all the time just because of them being deep fried but they were just delicious.

I've tried sushi and I don't like it but I saw the sign for deep fried prawns and thought that would make a tasty treat. Haven't had deep fried prawns in years and man were they good. I don't like cold soy sauce so I didn't have any. But that was okay the prawns by themselves was good.

Clear morning here and out in a bit to get a couple of things done. Had some wind last night nothing as serious as the storm in November. But there is more wind and rain on the way. Anyone travelling on BC Ferries had better check their websites for sailing delays and cancellations.

My corner will just be rain and some wind most like. Like I said before green Christmas around here. Will take umbrella incase I get caught in some while I am out.

Crazy day!
Our electricity went out, which it does on our circuit from time to time.

Our neighbors across the street never have a problem. So when that happens our side of the street is cold and dark, meanwhile, the houses across the street look lit up like a for a party. But I digress...

So I thought to text my dog walking friend bc she's far into the "good" circuit. Not only was her power out, so was their water.

And so was ours, I discovered.

And then, when the power came back on, we both realized that Spectrum was down too. Their routers, which are scattered here there and elsewhere in the neighborhoods, require power and when THAT goes out they have to reset everything.

Big substation transformer failure, the news says.

So, being nosy, I tried to locate the substation on a map. Nowhere to be found. I happen to know where a few are located bc I drive by them once in a while; they're not mapped either!

"Security through obscurity"? That never really works.

Still no Spectrum inet. I'm accessing inet via my (cheap) smart phone.

We'll be celebrating Christmas on Sunday Jan 1. This has been such a crappy 6 months, topped off by us all getting a flu around Thanksgiving (Nov 28) from which I'm still coughing and wheezing.

So we celebrated my bday along with T-day a week late. And here I am, not ready for Xmas. I think my get- up- and- go got up and went.

Read this funny thing online

Quote:

“The War on Christmas cannot end until Christmas stops its illegal occupation of November. I am calling on the Claus regime to return to the borders agreed upon in the Black Friday Agreement.”

Cannot believe grocery prices nowadays. I've tried all kinds of dodges to reduce costs and still present high quality meals. One of my dodges was to buy whole organic chicken... the only organic meat I can afford ... but OMG I wrung every bit of value out of it. Cut into breast meat, thigh, drumstick, and wing, a half chicken made a meal plus leftovers. Id cook the carcasse, neck and gizzards and the bits of meat that I could pull off the bones, plus organ meat, made a nice supplement for Zippy. Then I'd return the bones and skin to the pot and make a lovely homemade chicken broth. There was nothing left out of it.

So what does the store do? Stop selling whole organic chickens, of course. Because why would they sell a whole chicken at $2.55/lb when they can sell you the thighs and breast separately for $8.99/lb?

On top of that, the chicken isn't as high quality as what I used to get. The breast meat is unusually tough for organic chicken. I think, bc they're selling breast meat separately, they've bred and fed these hens to be big-breasted ladies, and they're developing a little bit of what's called woody breast.

Gonna have to find alternatives.

Well, the 10:30 to 11 became 11 or after. I got that call this morning at 9:45. With her daughter in law there she didn't get me to help. So that was a change. I got to play with her 3year old granddaughter. Very sweet little one.

My boss bought back bacon and asked me how to deal with it. I told her to put it in a pan on the stove to warm it up and maybe give it some colour. Well, after that she stuck it in the oven and turned it into shoe leather. She also invited at least 6 other people who never showed up.

Her son and daughter in law gave me a small box of chocolates.

They had to give me a ride home because around 1pm it started raining cats and dogs. Still is sort of right now at 9pm. It was dry this morning.

So got back about 3:30 and did my breakfast dishes then started on my supper.

Seems like your winter has been seasonably rainy?

Over here, almost New Year's and not a drop of rain. Im gonna have to start watering my CA natives if it doesn't start raining pretty soon.

Was kind of undecided about where to focus my attention: the holidays, yardwork, or house cleaning.

I decided this week is housecleaning. A light spring cleaning. Not the whole house, but the rooms where we spend the most time.

I decided I would tackle the livingroom one wall at time, so yesterday I dusted down the ceiling, crown molding, the tops of the drapes and the upper wall, and dragged out my old but still trusty canister HEPA vacuum cleaner, and vacuumed the window screens, under the computer table and end table, moved the sofa and vacuumedunder and brhind them. (Yikes!!!) . I still had time, so on to wall 2. Moved the loveseat low bookcase and vacuumed behind and under them (More yikes!!!) All the power cords and cabling, and under the cushions. Dusted what was dustable with a damp sponge, and while that carried a bucket with me, and everything that was out of place I tossed into the bucket.
Looks a lot better!
Today I tackle the other two walls.

Back and done for today but not one of my stellar days.

It started when I almost forgot to take the last of my seizure meds.

Then I had to go the bank for some extra cash. Wet spot on floor that I didn't see. I slid in it, luckily I didn't go down but my coffee went all over the floor. A teller who is very nice, saw it and said don't worry. I apologized and went on with my business.

Library and grocery store went alright.

Then I decided to check out a new brunch cafe. Burger was very good but just too big for me. Spoke to I guess the head lady as she was asking everyone how the food was. Explained about the portion size and she said they would be adding smaller and more things in the New Year. They've only been open a week. Couldn't hear her properly and had to ask her to repeat herself. Their baked goods look about the right size for me. Dropped a quarter I got in change in front of the place and picked it up.

Went back to the local mall to go to the washroom. Went into a stall and no toilet paper. Had to move to another one.

Dollar Store was okay too.

So, I got home in one piece with no rain. Sun is still out now through the clouds. But I see since I've been in, I have somehow nicked a finger.

That could have meant a lot of $$$ for you!

Yeah, sounds like you had a semi-sucky day!

I didn't get around to doing that 3rd and 4th wall. That bucket of miscellaneous stuff was mostly dear daughter's junk. So I needed to kind of sit on her neck to have her sort it out, and while that I sorted the mail basket, which I haven't done for 3(? More?) weeks. At least the mail and the miscellaneous got sorted.

More cleaning tomorrow.

Yup, just as I was walking up to the ATM. Oh, I've almost slipped before when the floor has been wet but this is the first I've come so close to loosing my footing and then loosing my coffee. It could have because of serious injury. I was just lucky.

It was. Just one of those days.

No rain in sight for the first 9 days of the New Year.

Oh, the cleaning I'm getting to: you guys have rain and snow and vegetation. We here don't. Not quite like a desert, but a tremendous amount of dust ... soil dust, road (tire) dust, soot, pollen ... in the air. No rain to wash it out, either. It inevitably gets into the house. And then there is the dead skin, dog hair, fabric fibers and all of the internal sources of dust. And then there are the daddy long legs spiders that spin their webs everywhere.

It all requires REGULAR cleaning, which I only do sporadically. I really should put that on a schedule.

Wouldn't say you are lucky down there but it will be raining the rest of this week and most like into the first week of January.

Vegetation is nice but not pollen which here in BC, come Spring get a lot of. My city is full of Japanese Cherry trees. Beautiful to look at but oy! One Spring a few years ago there was no much pollen in the air from them I was right mess of sneezing and sputtering. No fun.

My place loves dust and I am still trying to clean out a bunch of it. Haven't gotten to it or I just don't feel like it.

Yesterday I managed two bedroom walls, crown molding, window casings, curtains, sills, screens, books and book case, headboard, nightstands, and waaaaay under the bed for the baseboards.

But today I cooked our (late) Christmas meal. SIX, I went with Honeysuckle bc that's what was on sale, and it turned out OK. Invited my friend from the foothills, we had roast turkey, dressing and gravy, and green beans. I picked cherry and pumpkin pie as my "non-green" fruit or vegetable. A simple but tasty dinner.

Tomorrow it's back to cleaning. Only planning on finishing our bedroom and dear daughter's. After that, back to yardwork.

I also got in touch with one of my cousins bc I heard that a couple of days ago she tripped and broke her arm! Fortunately it's the left, and she's right handed. Still, what a way to end one year and start another!

Tripping and falling ... at our age (70+) something to be careful of. My sis tripped and fell and dislocated her shoulder a couple of years ago. And it's not like they pop it into place and you just go on from there. Oh, no! In a sling for 3 weeks, physical therapy, and right arm totally out of commission. It was horrible. Living alone as she was, she needed help for everything. Fortunately family and neighbors stepped in.

I myself had a serious trip and fall a few years ago while in chemo. Fortunately it just resulted in tearing thru the forearm of a VERY heavy duty shirt, scrapes and bruises. Since then, my balance has gotten really bad (thanks chemo) and if I'm working outdoors or walking the dog on uneven ground or even stepping around someone at home, I have to be very, very careful and watch where I put my feet. Hubby's balance is also bad, for other reasons, and watching those "body cam" cop shows we realized we would never, ever, be able to pass a roadside sobriety test. It is something to laugh about! But also something that made us both more aware of our limitations.

So, I am now very careful outdoors. I tell dear daughter that if I'm not in by X o'clock, come check on me bc I may have tripped and hit my head. Also, I removed tripping hazzards from the home. Both of the accidents that resulted in serious injuries occurred at home.

Sounds like a pleasant end to 2024 and a nice beginning to 2025.

I haven't heard from anyone so far and don't expect I will.

I hear ya. That's what scares me some about living a lone, if I get hurt there is no one to help me. My seizure meds can make me a little wobbly but so far no accidents. Which is good.

In from my walk and still dry here. Expecting rain for tomorrow.

Some stuff open and some stuff not. Got a coffee at a local Tim Horton's and a bite to eat. Local mall was open at 11am, so I went and had a look around there. Need a new backpack as the one I got right now the stitching is starting to come out of it and possible holes developing.

Well. I derailed myself, again, from the vacuuming that I had planned on doing, but in my defense circumstances conspired.

A number of years ago I bought a little freezer bc my frig freezer didn't allow me to stock up on sales. Knowing it was going into the breezeway, which can get pretty hot in summer, I looked for the most absolutely energy efficient one I could find, bc it wouldn't make sense to save on groceries and spend on electricity. So it's a manual defrost. Been looking at it for quite a while knowing it needed defrosting.

Well, bc there haven't been many good sales lately, the freezer was pretty empty. And I knew dear daughter was going to be putting in a bunch of ground turkey and a pork butt roast when she got home so ... sigh. Got out the pots of hot water and started chipping/ melting off the ice. Three hours later ... I finished just as they got home.

Fortunately its only a once a year thing, and at least it's done. While I was at it, since its such a drippy job, I cleaned the breezeway floor.

Just as an aside, I had eggs on the grocery list. Dear daughter sent me a picture if the egg case at our local Ralph's: empty! With the exception of a few cartons of small eggs.

I've heard that bird flu is a huge problem in California now. Must be causing the culling of a lot of flocks.
