CANTTAKESKY

Sci fi movie about a futuristic economy with time as currency. It is sort of a Bonnie-and-Clyde Robin Hood action story, but has some deeper commentary on poverty, inflation, resource distribution, death, and maybe even eugenics.

Anyone seen it?

Freedom is Important because People are Important

Hello,

I recall the film. It has some good moments. It also had some contrivances and mushy plot details.

It is essentially an allegory for the haves and have nots that uses time to represent money while making the point that both things represent life and the ability to live well.

Wulf - Niki is a stupid fucking bitch who should hurry up and die.

America loves a winner!

One of my last 2 movies I still have from blockbuster ( the other is The Lady w/ the Dragon Tattoo ) that I've yet to watch.

I recall seeing the previews for it, and thinking - WOW, what a cast! And noting that it looked a bit like Logan's Run and Gattaca , maybe ? ( dunno, hand't seen that one yet )

I probably should be watching it now, instead of talking about it, but I don't wanna start it and fall asleep midway through.

I liked it, my dad loved it, he's already seen it twice and will no doubt watch it many more times. AS cheesy as the premise may seem once you get into it its pretty good.

I assume you're my pal until you let me know otherwise.

What struck me is that the whole system was designed and rigged to kill poor people. Not just to keep them poor, but to kill them.

Hello,

Yes. This terrible economic condition, in a mostly lawless region rife with violence and ways to die anyway.

But meanwhile no force was reducing the population of the wealthy. They rarely died.

I'm not entirely sure why they needed to exert additional pressure to cull the poor. The system was designed so that the poor would want to reproduce in order to take time from their children. So why have both a death pressure and a reproductive pressure? Why encourage 'turnover' so to speak? Is it so that nobody has the time needed to get ahead and move up in the strata of society?

STORYMARK

I thought it was a really good movie in terms of allegory, but a bit hackneyed in terms of plot. But overall, I enjoyed it.

Note to anyone - Please pity the poor, poor wittle Rappyboy. He's feeling put upon lately, what with all those facts disagreeing with what he believes.

Good observation, Anthony.

I think the turnover is to have a populace that is too naive and inexperienced to ever pose a real threat to the caste system, yes. Imagine if the same people were 100 years old in both castes. It would be much harder to hide the truth from lower strata.
