There's no place I can be since I found Serenity.

When you are involved in a fandom it can be easy to overlook the fact that a lot of people do not share your obsession, especially when you spend a lot of your spare time conversing with other fans on message boards. But we must not lose sight of the fact that Firefly is still a relatively unknown property to the general public.

Last night I attended a party at a friends house. It was partly her birthday party, but instead of accepting gifts for herself, she was collecting donations to be sent to Operation Gratitude - http://opgratitude.com/website/html/index.php. Please check out their "wish list" for things to be sent to our troops overseas. At the top of the list is DVDs, and I was going to contribute a Firefly set, along with some other items. If I had thought of it enough in advance I would have ordered it from amazon.com, because I went to seven different stores yesterday, in a vain attempt to find a copy. No one had it in stock! That was three different Wal-Marts, Best Buy, Circuit City, Hastings & Target.

Worse than that, there was only one of the clerks I talked to (Best Buy) who was even familiar with it. He said they usually just get two at a time but that they sell quickly. When asked why they don't order more he just shrugged noncommitally, but hopefully he will pass along the notion that more is better. And at the party, when I mentioned that I had wanted to give the DVDs but explained the reason why I didn't have them, there was only one person who had ever heard of Firefly, that being the hostess, and that only because I had mentioned it to her a couple of weeks ago. I would say there were at least 50 people there last night, and not another Browncoat among them.

So, to make a long post even longer, we need to continue to make a concerted effort to check retailers often to see if they have it in stock, and take every opportunity to talk about the show to others when possible. The more people who see the series, the more that will be anxiously awaiting the BDM.

America loves a winner!

I too have run into the problem of stores not having ANY Firefly DVD's on the shelves, while scores of Farscape, Babylon 5 , Andromeda DVDs sit on the shelves and collect dust. As a rule, when I frequent any of those stores, I casually ask the clerk if they have the Firefly DVD... they don't..then I ask why... and sure enough.. " the manager only orders a few at a time... "

Also, I bought a 2nd DVD box so I could loan out to friends. So far, it's having trouble making the rounds as the 1st loanee claims she's been too busy to watch it. ( The fact that she's a big Joss Whedon fan and is footdragging on watching it is a bit perplexing )

And yes, I try to slip in a Firefly mention when ever the issue of movies, sci fi, chinese or geese juggling comes up in my daily conversations. Hopefully w/ the movie coming out, more and more will hear from folks like us spreading the good word to thems that need it.

" They don't like it when you shoot at 'em. I worked that out myself. "

The last two times I went to Best Buy, I didn't see any of the sets out, either. The time before that, though, I noticed a few. . .and I strategically placed them at eye-level and in front of DVD sets I didn't like.

One small step for a Browncoat, one giant leap for Browncoat kind.

It's popular with the military. At the BX here (outside Tokyo) it's in their "10 Most Popular" section as well as in the TV series section.

I wonder how it's doing on other bases?

All my life I wanted to be somebody. I guess I should have been more specific.

What I don't get (and it's not directed to anyone here specifically) is why people in general feel that they are entitled to something just b/c it's their birthday. Whoop-de-f*'ing-do. It's your birthday and *you* 've decided to spend your money and invite people over, not only that, but you have some how obligated your "friends" to spend some of their hard-earned money on you!? What kind of "friend" is this? If *you* wanna have a party - fine! Don't put any of this obligatory thing on any of your "friends". Friends are just that - Friends. They might be there for emotional needs, they might like to hang out with you just because, or there might some shared history together (or a whole host of other reasons). But Friends aren't there for free handouts every once in awhile "just because".

People are always expecting something for nothing.

ASTRIANA

Um, I think you're making the basic assumption that the birthday-person in question requested gifts/donations of her guests. What I got from this was that she made it clear that if her friends wanted to give her gifts, to please donate them to this cause instead. Personally, I don't see anything wrong with that.

Astriana is correct in her assumption. There was certainly no implied obligation for anyone to contribute anything, but there was specifically a request not to give the birthday girl a present.

If you buy the DVDs through the Amazon link on this board Haken gets a little money to keep the board running.

Cheat.

I have a kinda-friend who works in the upper echelons of Borders and Co (bookstore).

Got her hooked, applied the pressure... Lo and behold, guess what wound up on the reccommendations list... repeatedly.

Reading this, I decided I would do a little promoting of my own...I work for a bigly huge giant dot com, and I'm in charge of the television section of the website. I think I'll go right now and stick Firefly in the Recommended section. I don't know why I haven't thought of this before!

20 years later, most retailers don't even carry DVD/BluRay anymore.
