This was just posted on Whedonesque.net by Joss:

Are you guys starting to hear that fanfare? Those distant drums? Are you slapping on your side-arms, pulling on your long brownish-colored coats and thumbing your crisp new bills in anticipation of the cinematic event of the year? Well, it's official: on April 22nd you, the true the blue the loyal, can step right up with the rest of America and WAIT FIVE MORE MONTHS.

Heh. See, sometimes studios shuffle around release dates...

Okay. Don't panic. right now you're panicking. you're thinking, "how could they do this to me?" But what you SHOULD be thinking is: "How could they do this to JOSS?". Seriously. That pity is mine and I want it back.

So what happened? Well, nothing terribly original. April got crowded with a lot of titles aimed at a similar demographic, and the studio decided September was a clearer corridor for the film to make the kind of impact it should. This isn't about a lack of confidence in the film -- in fact, they told me this before they even saw it. And now they have seen it, and unless they're way better liars than I'm used to, they dug it. Actually, they dug it pretty large, which is a good sign since there's not a single finished effect in the film. There's no reworking the end, no reshoots, no "does it have to be in space?". It's just a marketing issue. Now you'll get to watch lots of trailers in the summer. And hopefully, by the time it comes out, other people, people who ain't us, will get a whiff of what we're up to, and come along too.

I love this movie. I HATE waiting to show it too you. I felt pretty much the way I imagine you're feeling right now when they told me. But these guys know what they're doing, and they're trying to protect their investment, not bury it. So I gotta be a grown-up. The release date is September 30th. Hopefully it won't change again.

Spread the word. Keep the faith. And gleam the damn cube already.

See?! This is why I never vote for candidates from the Demographic Party! Those guys are supposed to represent us, but they always just wind up screwing the working stiffs. It's downright un-demographic and anti-American!

Speaking of 'anti-American', I wonder if they're still planning on the original release dates for the rest of the world? If so, I'm off to the Netherlands (by tramp steamer) for the 5th of May premiere. Can I bring y'all back some tulips or other 'horticultural products'?

I may be the only one who is gald about this. Not that I have to wait even longer, but that people are looking for a better release date that will hightlight this movie even more.
Did that make sense?
Anyways, I didn't like the original release date. I was hoping for a time when the movie could stand out on it's own and not compete with other large movie releases.
Not that I think Serenity could'nt stand on it's own against them, but I think it could help the movie more this way.

No... You have to wait longer for something you thought you were going to get sooner, after waiting for a long time.

Unless they change their minds again, in which case it will mean an even longer wait to get the movie, which we all were sure we'd get sooner rather than later... But... We were wrong... And stuff...

Okay, my head hurts now.

Okay, okay, I know we're all pissed off or dissapointed. But we gotta turn this to our advantage.

A five month more wait means-

More time to guerilla market Serenity.

More time to convert new fans.

More time to raise money for DVD Set Donations

More time to work on costume for us costumers / cosplayers.

...and all that boils down to a better chance we get those two "successful weekends" that are needed for Universal to green light two more Serenity movies.

So, spout that explitive and then regroup yourself. Cause us fans have work to do.

Did a little research. Here's what IMDB has listed as being released in April (removing Serenity):

April 1st:
Surfing the Wake
Sin City
Stomp! Shout! Scream!
Tenacious D in: The Pick of Destiny
Weather Man, The
Big Ain't Bad (2002)

April 8th:
In Her Shoes
Unleashed
Dust to Glory
Man of the House

April 15th
Rumor Has It
Amityville Horror, The

April 17th:
Bright Leaves

April 22nd:
Walk the Line

April 29th:
Crash
House of Wax
Every Word Is True
XXX: State of the Union

April 30th:
Dead Man's Bluff

May 1st:
Disaster!

May 5th:
Miracle Mile

May 6th:
Kingdom of Heaven
Monster-in-Law
Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, The
===============

I only recognize a handful of titles. There's Sin City, but that's at the beginning of April and I'd consider it out of play by the 22nd. There's Amityville Horror (which I'm wondering why it is being released in April), but I don't see it as big competition for Serenity.

AFTER the 22nd, though, you have the sequal to XXX and the next week you have Hitchhiker's. Those are the two that Universal is afraid of. Demographics overlap, and both can be seen as having more recognition than Firefly. So Universal is afraid that Serenity won't have the staying power at the box office past the first week.

As much as I HATE to wait that much longer, I'm inclined to agree with the decision. I think it really needs at least one extra weekend without competition to get its foot in the door with word of mouth.

Tomanta,

Thanks for the reassurance. It's not so good that release date was delayed, but it would be worse if it was due to Universal not believing in Serenity.

What I mean to say, if they delayed it because they wanna give it the best chance, then it's OK. If they delayed it because they can't be bothered, then "I'm confused, I'm angry, and I'm armed".

Wow

Oh well. We'll just have more time to promote the hell out of our BDM. Truth be told, I was worried that XXX: State Of The Union and the next Star Wars movie would come along and deposit our BDM underneath them both, and the media analysts would have a field day with the overbooked spring release schedule and take it out on Serenity (i.e. "Whedon's Firefly movie fails to soar"). So September 30th sounds good. According to Yahoo! Movies, it's a week after The Legend Of Zorro and Serenity will be opening up against Curious George. I'd rather there be no competition, but maybe Serenity can battle for a premium chunk of box-office gold. Onward, Browncoats!

If they dug it pretty large, why don't they want to release it in summer? Isn't that supposed to be the prefered season for big damn movies with no pretensions toward prime-time oscars? And isn't this the official BDM? September is for niche films, not blockbusters. We're gonna see this film no matter when, or where, it's released. Universal needs more than just Firefly fans to justify $50Million to produce the BDM.

Now, they're planning to release it a month before the DVD release of the next Star Wars movie. In the month of September, I wouldn't be surprised if there is more advertising $money spent on the SWDVD than on the BDMTR.

Don't wanna throw down in April? Awright, it's their money, advertising too. But give us this summer.

And a Christmas 2005 DVD.

No way! No, that's just tooo long! We can't wait that long, oh why!

Ah well, I guess that absence does make the heart grow fonder. I mean, who else isn't planning to go see this movie at least 3 times when it comes out!?!

I've seen the first 13 episodes of Firefly now and am saving the Season Finale, "Objects In Space", for tonight when I get home! I'm soooo excited, I've been told it's one of Joss' best works, and that there's a lot of River in there, my FAV character!!!

I can't wait!!! Ahh! I'll post my thoughts on it, and the Season as a whole later on.

Then I can watch all the special features I've been fighting to resist, and all the commentaries, and then I'm gonna re-watch the whole season again, then I'm lending it to my friend, so will have to struggle alone for at least a week. At least I'll have Buffy & Angel to keep me occupied.

But I'm so annoyed about the delayed movie!

Also, here's hoping that the movie will make TV bosses beg for A Firefly Season 2!!!

THIS IS BAD. I CALL A PETITION AT ONCE. I'm not convinced the firefly fanbase and keep this amazing enthusiasm up for another 5 months. I mean what is there to be a fan of if nothing new in being released. Comic con and the official website brought massive attention to firely, the dvds were have just finished being released in most countries. Whats going to keep us going? I seriously think we should all sign an offical fan petition. This is our movie. Joss maybe able to accept the new date but he also praised the original date. I don't agree with there business decisions. If there so confident about this film then why arn't other studios pulling out of releasing their films that week. They should take a stand. This is an act of insecurity of the studio. TYPICAL. This is bad news in many different ways.

NERVOUSPETE

I'm convinced the fan base can, personally. Since I've arrived here I've been really impressed by the level of commitment shown by Firefly fans, one that has me all full fervour as well - and I usually dislike the status and geekery that comes with being a cheerleading fanboy or fangirl, but with Firefly I feel it's something truly special!

Personally I think that the new date will work better for the film, and that more people will be more likely to see it in that summer month. The media will be concentrating on Star Wars in April, but in September if Universal wisely markets it as an intelligent sci-fi romp, drawing critics attention to it, then I think that it will do well. And I know SFX in the UK will continue to champion it, and they won't let this date shift go without majorly commenting on it repeatedly, and begging people not to lose heart.

It was a blow reading the news in the morning, especially since I read it on the abhorent Aintitcoolnews.com, and then made the mistake of reading the largely ignorant Talkback as well. I was on the site due to myself checking my The Incredibles review on a Talkback, desperately conducting a social experiment to see if people would follow my lead, talk intelligently and respectfully, and clearly and concisely put forward their non-biased views. Failed miserably, obviously. And then I found the Serenity delayed news. And I felt even more depressed.

But only because I personally will have to wait. From a non-fan perspective, looking at what's good for the film, I think September will treat it better. In the meantime I'll just have to continue with my big damn novel and release it to fill the gap.

I'm still glad that Serenity is in the hands of Universal - we are talking of a studio here who funded our BDM in the first place, and have every faith in Whedon. I don't think they'll shabilly treat him, and I'm sure they conferred with him beforehand on this - not that he might have given his wholehearted approval, but from what he's said on the Whedonesque site I feel that he trusts them.

So we don't slack off. The war continues. We must convert. Let us hope a very shiny trailer comes out in April to use as ammunition and that the critics laud Serenity - if only to piggyback an extra drubbing against Lucas's no doubt mediocre effort.

Finally, I'm proud of you guys for taking this news with so few exclamation marks or capital letters. This is a truly dedicated, thoughtful board. My stiff-upper lip is quivering.

And Joss, damn, hasn't he got the mightiest stiff-upper-lip of all? An honoury Brit.

Thanks for listening. Keep on flyin'.

Pete

P.S: (And hey! This news means that we can all redivert all our efforts from political posting to strategising on every damn thing we can do between now and September to lure the public's mind into a slavering anticipation of Serenity!)

RABIT

Not happy about it, but I'll live. I guess they know the business, so - assuming that the reasons are real - I'm going to assume that it'll be better for the movie. I do feel sorry for Joss, and the rest of the cast and crew, as they won't be able to see the results of their efforts for even longer, but hopefully it'll result in a larger showing...

Ah, the (few) Hoosier Browncoats aren't that bad. Really! (Where are you going to be in Indiana?)

Wonderful point - more time to get it written and written well, right?

yep.and probably the other book(on essays).....this is not good, well this thanksgiving i am NOT thankful for this.i hate this.im sorry im a big baby right now, i know.just a few days ago the first photo was leaked and it hit me that it was getting closer--and now(sigh) alright,so here is a MEMO TO UNIVERSAL- PROVE IT.BACK IT UP.MARKET THE SHIT OUT OF THIS FILM! As april was approaching i still hadn't heard of ANY merchandise other than cards and 2 books,so now you can work on the following "dream merchandise" a video game by next christmas, that rumored animated prequel, action figures dammit(paramount blew it with sky captain)t-shirts,and anything else. hell ill take serenity pop tarts if it'll help with marketing! and yes,to the other fellow browncoats have said that gives us more time to convert other folks to this universe.i called my best friend who i just converted a few months ago and told him the bad news and he said the same as above,so we've got a lot of work people I may be depressed now,but gorramit that's enough of that,'cause browncoats don't pout they fight on."you wanna see the real me now?" we have to support this film to the end(one question, will the overseas market get it first now?)so right now we have 2 films to destroy the sequel to zorro-im sorry is it 1999 already? little late dontcha think? curious george.....sorry this monkey has no curiousity in that one.BRING IT ON STUDIOS!
