FROM COMICS CONTINUUM-

SERENITY #1

Written by Joss Whedon and Brett Matthews, pencils by Will Conrad, colors by Laura Martin.

This fall Joss Whedon makes his big-screen debut as writer/director with Serenity, the big-budget feature follow-up to his cult-hit TV show Firefly‹the story of a ship full of mercenaries, outlaws, fugitives, and one law-abiding prostitute running across the fringes of space. Now Whedon pens a three issue miniseries based on the film with Brett Matthews, whose previous credits include Spider-Man specials with Daredevil and Wolverine, episodes of TV's Firefly, an Angel miniseries, and the animated Chronicles of Riddick feature Dark Fury.

The crew of Serenity once again find themselves broke and on the wrong side of a number of very large firearms, making the first issue a case study in how to mix intense, Whedon-style character interaction with cinematic action and violence. Artist Will Conrad and colorist Laura Martin paint a rough and wild world of adventure across a strange and dangerous universe. Each issue of this series features three covers, one for each member of the Serenity crew, drawn by the biggest names in comics. Issue #1 features Mal by John Cassaday, Inara by J.G. Jones, and Jayne by Bryan Hitch.

32 pages, $2.99, in stores on July 6.

Would be a good way to let them know there'll be demand!

Edited to add links to the other two covers.

When I look through their preorders from Dark Horse they have Serenity #1 (of 3) listed 3 times. Are these for the three different covers? Or if I order one of each will I possibly get the same one with the same cover 3 times? Anybody know?

Actually, 3 issues x 3 covers/issue equals 9. Not counting Serenity, which they bloody well should, there are nine crew members.

And I shall have to buy nine comics. *adds to list before Sin City, and beside the Rogue PSR*

Here's where, sadly, guerrilla marketing (or, in this case, gorilla marketing) comes in conflict with supporting one's local merchant. I would suggest either dropping in & buying it from a local comic store or pre-ordering it from a bookstore for whom comix are a minor component. What we get out of pre-ordering from a mainstream bookstore is expanding their awareness of the market for Serenity (maybe even Firefly) related items. And it's more than just the order, 'cause of course you have to do it with a live bookstore employee, explaining that the comix you want come with multiple covers for the same title, and you want all the different covers.

I asked at this site http://www.tfaw.com

The three different entries for Serenity #1 (of 3) on their site for preorders are all the different covers. So if you just preorder one of each you'll be getting all 3 covers. Of course we should all be ordering 4 actually. 1 of each of the covers to keep in mint condition and 1 extra to open and read.

Three copies? Four copies? Six I says! I'm buying six!

No, really, I'm buying just the one. I've never payed $9 for one comic book, so I'll opt for just the $3 version. I mean, give me a break. I love Firefly and all, but that kind of marketing is taking advantage of us too much.

Er, but maybe I'll start a collection.... nine bucks ain't all that much. Grrr.

Also, I'm confused on whether these comics will be spoilerish. Hmmmm. I sense a crisis coming on - brought about by my conflicting desires of supporting any and all commercial Firefly related ventures and staying away from all spoilers. I guess, worst case scenario, that I don't have to read the comics after I buy them .

From what I understand, the comics will serve as a bridge between the series and the movie. At least I hope so, because I don't think I could resist temptation for that long!

I second that. At Wondercon, Joss said that the comics would fill in the gap of storyline that would be (I think I'm remembering this right) six months in the 'verse. Seems to me that it's the same idea as the "Star Wars: Clone Wars" TV animated shorts that came out after Episode II...only of course, these will be better!

OPOSSUM

Howdy,

Things From Another World is just like any other comic book store, but a bit more flashy and commercial. I live in the Portland, Oregon area and have been to them as well as the one at Universal. I've been a customer of the man who started the tfaw chain for 15 years. He opened a new store when he sold the chain to the company his brother helped start, Dark Horse.

I would suggest that you visit your local comic book store as most are a one person shop that are just trying to make a living doing what they love. Let them know what you want and they will set them aside for you. You may have to register for a box, which normally means giving them your name and $5 that you get back when you close your box.

The advantage here is that you will be able to look at the book before you buy it...NOT read it, but examine it to make sure it is in top quality. There are several things you can pick up for less than a quarter (total) when you are there that will assist you in keeping it in top shape. A backer board and a sleeve. You put the backer board in the sleeve and then the comic in the bag. This helps keep dust and other things from getting on the book and supports the spine.

Multiply covers

During the latest comic book boom, known to many as the mid 90's, comic book publishers came out with tons of crap...tons. People were coming into money and the economy was decent. All those kids, da' boomers, had reached an age and income level where they could buy comics and remember the good old days. Shops popped up everywhere and comic shows were in every mall.

Multiple covers started being printed and the first big one was for Marvel's launch of their new X-Men revival. Now, it's been 10 years so my memory may be shaky, but I seem to remember 3 gate fold covers for that 1st issue. It showed the entire X-Men crew. Same book inside just different covers and thus was born the alternate cover rage. Pure marketing genius, but like all things, including the afore mentioned comic book boom, consumers moved away from the alternate covers...then shows....and finally the shops started to go away...sad.

Hi, my name is opossum and I'm a comic book geek.

You may also find that there are other Firefly related things in the comic book shop when you visit as another marketing tool used is to supply them with things that can only be bought at comic book shops. Why? It helps drive traffic to the shops and keeps the merchants happy to know they will get people in the door looking for those things only available through them.

I'd suggest you find one close by and check them out or if you don't mind a bit of travel open the yellow pages and find the one with the biggest ad. Comic book shops no matter how large eek out a living and if they have enough to get a nice big ad, then chances are they have a good sized shop.

If you end up finding these comics at the local bookstore (not comic book shop) or other outlet look closely before you buy. Comics sold at comic book stores do not have UPC's on them. No big deal, but they put those UPC's on the cover and it blocks out a small portion of the art.

I'm a bit passionate about this topic as you can see, but then I'm also that way about Firefly. This might have been too big of a post...certainly too big to be my first one on these boards.

Not too big a post at all, opossum, and highly informative. Welcome .

Not sure if this store was part of the chain but I used to buy my comics at Another World in Eagle Rock, California. Tiny hole in the wall on Colorado Blvd that I would bike to every week. I think it's still there (I drop by most times I visit my parents just to get all nostalgic). Now if only my Airboys, Blue Beetles, The Question, and all the other titles I collected were worth anything since I've still got boxes in storage with everything bagged and backed.

Oh, and Nywoe: Absolutely .

I used to be one of these women who didn't like comics. As it turns out, it's only super-hero comics I don't like (Although I imagine there are probably exceptions. I'm willing to check out Joss's X-men for sure.)

Anyway, a few years back, I was trying to find some Japanese comics (manga) for my sister. This was back before most people had heard of manga (which I now see everywhere! Awesome). Annnyywayy... I had to go into several comic shops to find what I was looking for. And every single one was dark, gloomy, and disorganized. The patrons and employees glanced up at me as if to say "What are you doing here? You don't belong." Needless to say, this didn't help with my predjudice against comics.

But, an interesting thing happened. For one, I stumbled across Scott McCloud's "Understanding Comics" in the library, and without meaning to, starting reading and was blown away by that book. And secondly, my husband helped me to get an internship for a short while at Dark Horse. Since then I have loved comics.

Hello, my name is Nywoe and I'm a comic book geek.

And yes, I did find a cheerful, bright, wonderful comic book store eventually. I love that place!

Joss's X-Men series is one of the best that I read in a long time since Ed Brubaker's Sleeper published by WildStorm and DC. Joss is defiantly making a name for himself in the comic-book world and he has most defiantly become on of the top writers to look out for. Serenity has a great crew on board with penciler Will Conrad, one of my favorite artists today next to legends Alex Ross, Jim Lee, and Tim Bradstreet. Serenity looks like it won't disappoint, it will not only bring in new fans but hopefully keep the old school fans held over until the release of the Serenity movie in late September.

Howdy,

Glad you found one (or more) that you like and yes, super hero comics are only a fraction of what comprises all comics.

As far as the people looking up and giving you that odd look...it's because they had never seen a girl/female/woman/chick in a shop before.

Times have changed, but the fan base for comic books is certainlly a male dominated area. As more and more women get behind the pencils more and more books come out that appeal to them.

Later!
