Not looking to create division. Just curious. "When did you become a Browncoat?"

BF - Before Fox started airing the show

DB - During The Broadcast

BD - Before the DVD's

AD - After the DVD's

Remember it's not a "Who's the greatest fan?" contest. I'm just curious.

I consider myself DB. I watched the show from the first episode, but I had heard nothing else except the lame promos by Fox. But somehow I knew I would like the show.

Ok so now you see what I'm looking for. So which are you??????

DB. Liked the show from the first episode, but wasn't hooked until "Our Mrs. Reynolds." Fortunately, I'd recorded all the episodes (just in case the show happened to be good), so I was able to go back to the beginning when I got hooked.

I'd have to say I'm DB as well. Knew it was coming, really looked forward to it, but didn't know too much about it other than the Fox promos. I really liked the show, but I didn't know how hooked I was until I had to fight back tears when I realized that I had NOT set the VCR the week that "Ariel" was broadcast. Pre-broadband, I had to wait for the DVDs before I finally saw that episode.

I might add I saw all the unaired episodes when a friend downloaded them for me. And I watched them in a crappy slow choppy RM format. Getting my DVD's was like a breath of fresh and very clear air.

DB - I wasn't the hip and cool internet savvy girl that i am today at the time the show started, and was only really just then becoming a Buffy the Vampire Slayer fan, so the only thing i knew of the show is what fox had to tell me: "A tough guy named Jayne! *JUST SCARE HIM A LITTLE. PAIN IS SCARY* A cosmic hooker! *HOW'S BUSINESS? NONE OF YOURS* And a girl in a box *RIVER SCREAMS*" and was a little skeptical at first...because you know... a cosmic hooker is only a big selling point if your a guy...

I totally agree with Cybersnark. I'm a BF too. Already a rabid Buffy and Angel fan that had to play catch-up with those; I wasn't going to miss a new show that I could catch from the very beginning. And anything Joss does is genius, so I was already sold. I even made it a priority to watch on vacation 3 states away.

I'm an AD fan. My buddy and I watched "Serenity" when he borrowed the DVD from his sister, and I was hooked. I *HAD* to get the set for myself.

DB- actually tuned in the night of the first show because I wanted to watch John Doe first ... didn't like John Doe so much, but I LOVED Firefly. I was a Buffy and Angel fan, but the previews mentioning Joss Whedon didn't phase me much ... kind of embarrassing that John Doe was the reason I watched. I blame lousy Fox advertising!

I'd have to say BF. Then as now I'd follow Joss' work anywhere.

I still remember with a mixture of shame and pride yelling and beating on the steering wheel as I raced home from an infuriatingly slow McDonald's drive-thru, covered in freshly spilled soda, cursing myself (and the world at large) for leaving to get food without at least setting a tape for "Bushwhacked."

Happy ending though. Made it just in time and my lovely wife was already taping it. But man, for a few minutes there in the solitude of my car there was a-screamin' goin' on!

BF - without a doubt. All I had to hear was "Joss Whedon" and "New Series From" and I was counting down the days.

Shoot - now I can't remember who it was up the thread talking about forgetting to set their VCR, but that was so totally me!

When they finally showed the "real" pilot, Serenity, by the time the episode was coming to a close, I was standing in front of the TV screaming all manner of unkind things to the TV (which obviously was standing in for every executive at F*X that had anything to do with the way the show was treated.) I have never done that before.

DB

Started with "Train Job" and never missed an episode except "Our Mrs. Reynolds" which I had to wait for the DVD which I was at a Boy Scout jamboree at the time at the Six Flags: The Great Escape in Lake George, New York.

The reason why I watched Firefly was because I was waiting for John Doe to come on (which sucked in the end anyways) and I also read the local TV reviewer (who happens to be named Mark McGwire;no relation to baseball though) review. He gave it a B+. He didn't give it an A at the time because he felt the pilot was too short and introduced the characters and the world to fast to the viewer for anyone to digest.

I didn't become involved in the online Browncoat community until right before the DVDs were released in December of 2003. It was by chance that I decided to try to google Firefly and see what I would come up with and it brought me here. And...well...here I am now.

Oh, and play Cantr II at www.cantr.net.

Although I read about the show and planned to watch just because it was a Whedon product, I wasn't overly impressed with the show's description or "The Train Job". (The REAL pilot was so much better!)

I continued to watch and steadily became a believer so that I, too, was a full-fledged Browncoat by the end of "Our Mrs. Reynolds".

So I'll call myself DB...

Gotta come clean and say 'During'. While I enjoyed Buffy and Angel well enough, I wasn't the fan of those shows that I am now. Joss's previous work certainly got me curious, but it wasn't 'till I saw Firefly unfold during the broadcast that I REALLY started getting hooked.

During Broadcast.

Was curious about it from the previews, but was so aggravated at what the new Star Trek I had looked forward to so much had become that I was purposely in the opposite end of the house from the TV during "The Train Job", trying to ignore my husband's whoops and cries of "You gotta come see this!" He turned it up, trying to entice me. I was being stubborn.

Then, I heard a strange exchange:
Conspiratorial man's voice, "Whatever happens, remember I love you."
Professional woman's voice, "Sir?"
Man, "Because you're my wife."
Woman, "Right. Sir. Honey."
And I had to know what was going on. I got to see the entire exchange with the sheriff, the brute on the bridge, and the Captain being noble with the medicine.

I was hooked.

"Is there any way I'm gonna get out of this with honor and dignity?"

Important people don't do field work.

Defintely during broadcast, but I had to be brought around...Was already a big Buffy and even bigger Angel fan, but the promos for Firefly just looked so...strange. To me, the promos looked liked...forced weirdness, if that's the right way to describe it. Watched The Train Job, and was not terribly excited by the teaser. But that theme song and title sequence...Knowing now, what I didn't know then, that the opening credits show you all you need to know really, and that beautiful song...and horses, and guns, and hot chicks and what an awesome ship! From the moment those first chords struck, I was a Browncoat for life. And, I tried, I really tried to watch the show, but I got moved to swing shift shortly after, so the only ones I got to see first run were Bushwhacked, Shindig, and Ariel (yeah, I don't know how that happened either.) Saw DVDs in the BX in Korea, snatched those bad boys up, watched the set three times, ran around on the internet, and found this site...Haken's holy grail to all the Browncoats!

Well...here I am.

DB(I guess)- A huge fan of Buffy and a somewhat lesser one of Angel, so of course I had to see what Joss's idea of sci-fi would be. I was interested from the instant I heard of it. Too bad I was scared of the internet back then, or I'd have been a member of this site for years. Not sure if that qualifies me for BF, since I can't really say I was hooked until I saw the show, though I was very interested.

DB and AD for me. Firefly started airing here on March 3rd, 2004 right around the time the BDM got the official green light.

Started watching Firefly because it was a Joss Whedon show and science fiction. I wasn’t hooked at first but kept watching. I started lurking here a couple of weeks later and joined a few weeks after that. Took about a month for me to realize I was a Browncoat but at that time I had only technically seen one episode from beginning to the end and read the script for the real pilot episode.

I ordered the DVDs before they had finished airing the series.

There's no place I can be since I found Serenity.

DB

I had seen a few promos for it, knew who Whedon was but had never watched Buffy or Angel (I have since corrected that oversight).

I was not totally sold on "The Train Job," but was intrigued by Mal toward the end when he returned the medicine to the townspeople who needed it more than he needed the money.

Then I missed "Bushwacked" due to a vcr screw-up, but fell in love with the show with "Our Mrs. Reynolds," and did not miss any others but did not tape them unfortunately. I was going to do that when they were repeated. Stupid me.

Pre-ordered the dvds and got them a couple of days after their release, and have watched them at least sixteen times since then, however I may have lost count. I have also purchased six other sets to give as gifts and donated one to the local library.

I did not seek out internet sites for the show until after the dvds were released, but since then I either lurk or post regularly here, serenitymovie.net, serenitymovie.com, and the Prospero boards, along with my own ezboard - http://pub103.ezboard.com/bthetempletongateforums.

AD -- We don't own a TV. We'd been heavy into Farscape after offering our first born for copies of the episodes from friends. But that show was done and over with and we were so sad, until my brother in law lent us his Firefly DVDs one day.

"You liked Farscape, you'll LOVE this."

We sighed a little sceptically, but were happily blown away by Firefly. Yep, we were in luv. But all too soon we had to return the DVDs. So we rented them, and re-rented them, and I began searching for fan sites, and our kid began to sing the Ballad of Serenity all the time (we didn't give him away after all), and finally I broke down and bought them, and....
now we watch them and re-watch them and are very happy.

I figure I've been a browncoat since 1979 when I first started playing Traveller in high school. The themes and tone of that game are represented in Firefly better than any sci-fi I've ever seen on television or movies. I'd sure like to ask Joss point-blank if he's played the game. I have sneeking suspiscion he has.

But to answer your question directly - I saw Train Job when it first aired. It seemed promising, but it wasn't until later that week after I downloaded the unaired version of "Serenity" that I was hooked. So, DB I guess.

I had been a casual "Angel" watcher since the beginning of the series, so I was curious about the new series "Firefly" I'd seen promos about.

However, due to Fox's mishandling of the show, I only managed to catch half an episode and didn't get interested at all. Sad, huh? Stoopid Fox.

So, once the DVD's came out, I kept hearing about how great the show was from people with the disks. Not being one to just fork over $40 for something as yet unseen, I rented the disks from Netflix and watched the episodes as intended, in order, and became a fan.

Beyond a doubt, a BF--

After the first season of "Buffy," I knew at that moment there was nothing JW could do that I wouldn't love.

A friend of mine in the industry told me about this new show, "something about horses, spaceships, and a hooker" and told me JW was heading it up... and I knew, whatever it was, I was going to watch it like it was my new religion.

And, sure enough, "Firefly" aired, and I loved it... despite not knowing what the freaking hell was going on, due to the morons at FUX skipping the rather vital pilot episode.

I even recall, back in the day, seeing "Alien Resurrection" and thinking, you know, this is a damn good story, despite the fact that it had to pick up after Alien 3." And, it wasn't until a few years later that I found out who wrote it.

By the way, is anyone else looking forward to the release of "Serenity?" In case you haven't heard yet, it's a sort of sequel to the "Firefly" series, and comes out in theaters at the end of September this year. I saw the trailer, looks pretty decent...

AD. Your story is SO similar to my own no need for me to rehash.(or did I post this under someone elses name?)

DECKROID

I am a BF.

I had the date on the calendar marked. I had the website bookmarked. I was very anxious for this show. Then I saw it. Then I loved it. Then I was a fan of it and brought in my buddy. Then I was destroyed by the news of cancellation. Then I was elated by the rumor of DVD. Then I bought the DVD and gave my crappy VCD's away to my buddy. Then I bought 3 more copies of the DVD as gifts and a rental set. Then I was overjoyed at the 'greenlight' news. Now I am back to being anxious for the show. Again.

You can't take the sky from me.
Cuz I got my DVDs.

I'm an AD.

I tend to avoid TV and I never heard of the show until the faithful at AR15.COM turned me on to it. I bought the DVD set on their say-so and it was one of the best purchases of my life. Dripping with quality and style, characters I care about...well, you know the rest.

BF. With "Buffy" winding down, I was eager to welcome a new JW show.

I was a huge Buffy fan, not so much Angel, and just never caught any Firefly and thought the concept was just too weird (I know I know...)

Luckily a friend had the DVDs and made me watch it with him...I was in love from "Curse your sudden but inevitable betrayal."

Browncoat BF! In fact I just noticed my three year anniversary at FFF.net is a couple weeks away.

Of course, I didn't officially love the show until I saw the Train Job (how could I?).

I am totally stoked that the audience for this show keeps growing and growing and am hopeful that the Browncoat AD crowd will out number all of the BF, DB and BD Browncoats very soon (if they don't already).

BD. I never saw the FOX broadcasts but heard about the series via word-of-mouth. By the time I saw the main character murder an unarmed man by a boot into an engine, I was hooked.
