"I love my Captain."---y'know in (ahem) a MANLY way--YEAH!

Post subject: Joss made a post from typings!

----------------------------------------------------------------------
----------

Hello, young lovers, wherever you are. This is Joss, coming to you
live via technology. I thought it would be fair to give you all my
little State of the Onion before I descend into the depths of the
Warren to pound away at my keyboard, munch lettuce and ignore that
annoying nerd Fiver who keeps saying something bad is coming, like he
can tell or whatever. I'm excited to beat this Wonder Woman script
into shape (and munch lettuce). Mostly, to be honest, I'm excited to
(deliberately split infinitive) not be a Professional Serenity
Barker. I love you guys, I loves me some Serenity cast, but I am
yammered out. By Spain it just got surreal (I think Nathan and Summer
will back me on that one). Selling is not my strong suit. Actually,
my strong suit is Kevlar, but it bunches in all the wrong places.

So I have read much over the past weeks: we have Won! Lost!
Triumphed! Failed! and have, of course, agreed with every single
thing I read (one of the exhausting things about having no
personality). But in the dark blue of early morning I do have some
perspective, and it runs thus:

I'm very content. I think the movie is really good. That was hard to
a)do and b) realize. The response has been terrific, the majority of
the reviews extremely positive: people GOT IT. What's more, an
impressive number of people saw this movie who never would have, and
even more still will. This is not spin: I know we didn't do the
expected numbers our first weekend, we didn't have an unprecedentedly
small drop-off the second (which was my personal fantasy.) I've been
to some dark places, just like you guys. But the movie has legs, and
people who loved it LOVED it crazy, the way love is supposed to be.
Europe has been a nice boost (and a lung-splitting shout out to my UK
and Aussie UIPeeps -- they're dears, and efficient as hell). We'll
keep soldiering on, until we can't crawl and we find DVD to carry us.
I see us kind of like the Shawshank Redemption without all the Oscar
nominations (unless Best Feet becomes a catagory). People who were
befuddled by the title or lack of premise hook will finally pick it
up, and keep picking it up... They may miss out on the big-screen
exitement, but they'll see our little tale and take it to their
hearts. Takes a while. Just like the show.

I've seen a couple of posts with Browncoats beating themselves up
about not having done enough. I never want to hear that again. You
guys have gone above and beyond above and beyond. The people who are
above and beyond are looking at you guys and going "Man, don't they
ever quit?" Your efforts, and your investment (emotional as well as
tickety) have done an enormous amount for this film and my battered
heart. No more self-flagellation, unless it's the healthy, what-every-
young-person-needs-to-learn-about-their-body kind.

And what about Da Fyoocha? (And why did I need Arnold to say that?) I
have no idea. It could be that this tale is told. Or it could be that
down the line, dollars accumulate and some exec says, "let's spin
that wheel again." Or who knows. I'm not resting my hopes on it, but
it's not a concept I'll ever close the book on. In case the 30,000
reporters I told didn't get this message out, I love this crew like
Nick loves Nora, like Hellboy loves Pancakes, like Bridgitte loves
Bernie (and if you're old enough to get that reference, my
condolences.)

Thank you all. I'll be in touch again, but I have an Amazon to
rassle. Remember that this is not over; every dollar (or Euro)
counts, every new convert is a friend for life. But don't fret too
much on what's to come. Enjoy the remarkable things we've
accomplished. You're Big Damn Fans. Have some lettuce.

All love, Joss.

Always nice to see someone else who remembers that fan is short for fanatic.

Besides, he didn’t say don’t go, he just said don’t beat yourself up.

And ChrisTheCynic is right, Joss didn't say not to go. He just doesn't want the Browncoats beating themselves up about it. So, hit the theaters, everyone! It ain't over yet.

It's been tearing me up not knowing how Joss has felt about the outcome, thanks for posting that.

Being in the UK I have me big shiny #1 to drool over, but even overall I think we did great. And I'm sure I'm not the first to think this, but Serenity II has a much bigger change of being huge.

I'm so glad that Joss is happy with the results. I took my uncle to see the movie last night. It was my third time seeing and his first. He never watched Firefly when it was on (not that he chose not to watch it, he just never heard about it when it was on) and he's never seen the DVD's, but he's an overall huge sci-fi fan.

I'm very happy to report that not only did he love the movie, but he plans on seeing it again and is planning to pick the series up on DVD over the weekend.

Score one for the browncoats... we've got another recruit on our side.

Joss is boss.

I love how Joss interacts with his fans and love that he will always carry a torch for Firefly/Serenity, because god knows I will as well. I have been a good Browncoat, I have introduced the sereies and the movie to several of my friends and they all went to see it multiple times and told other people about it. I will be getting out again this weekend, and hopefully the weekend after that, and hopefully along with the new Browncoats that have sprung up because of my little introduction to the wonderful verse.

I just would like to say, that as long as it is in theaters and on DVD I will keep watching as I am sure we will all keep watching and flying with our BDH.

STILLSHINY

9 imortalized forever
a crew of never forgotten
risking all
upon lines laying down so much & everything

we followed
into black, into those dark & greyer places
and like no rose did we emerge on the other side

for we are on no other side.
an empire of knights & farmboys have had their final say

though they try to carry on animated & over analyzed it is simply too much, no return or revenge, just let it lie silent

but here in this black with my shiny coat of brown I have found a home, a life, and an inspiration

while it is a sincere desire to see the story carry on, I've been touched & changed. By a Sci-fi show? Yes. and why? Because, I still maintain that simple belief in heroes & doing the impossible. The heroes are not the ones who sit around "waiting" for the distressed. The true heroes are they who have the distress thrown upon them and still march toward a sunset, knowing that when the darkness finally passes the sun will rise.

Do not mistake my meaning, I want to see the story move on, there are adventures and moments that must be told. But sequels & action figures be damned. This story, and these characters have become a part of us, a part of my being.

Beyond my fanboy good looks, and our "hip" "cultish" status, there is something deeper. It's love & it is a frightening thing...to those who don't posess it or can't posess it. To a jaded world who have lost the sense of something greater, something worth putting yourself on the line for. This is what we have found. It's what we truly carry, It's what never fades into fad, and is never consumed when consumers find a new flavor.

This won't pass away, it is timeless, it is a part of who I am. When reality cuts me, my blood bleeds brown & independant.

Yeah, I Got it.

And the plastic dinosaur on my desktop just smiles.

Oh, yes, thank you. I was about to pitch my 2 in on this one. I collect found lists. Have one that includes "change of clothes in a shoebox", another that intends "talk dad into having the party at his house".

There are few whose work touches me as deeply, I find his depth of understanding of character and emotion a constant inspiration. He makes me laugh, breaks my heart, makes me want to be a better person.

Of course he would say 'you've done more than', that's just his way. Of course that doesn't mean we will stop. Even if the numbers were way up there, I would still be gently coaxing others to go with me. There are things about participation in an event like this that can't be replicated by a DVD on a small screen, even if you don't make opening night.

Me too! Is that sad?

I was so happy about the Watership Down reference... That's an awesome book about people, well, rabbits, who do the impossible... It seems remarkably apropo.

I didn't get to the BDM today, but I'm hoping maybe late this evening. And I have two good friends who are planning on a Sunday matinee. If I can find a sitter, I'll join them.

I wish he *would* publish a to-do list for us... We'd do it in a flash. Joss, if you're lurking, we're your willing hordes. Point us where you want us and we'll go all Ghengis-Khan-y.

But only in a tasteful, understated, not-freakish way, of course.

As is almost always true of television: Bridgett loves Bernie was a really crappy piece of crap passed off as entertainment.

David Birney and Meredith Baxter-Birney played a newlywed couple. After the series went down in flames and both their careers stalled and the inevitable hollywood divorce, she was again Meredith Baxter. Yes the mom on "Family Ties." David Birney faded into obscurity never to be seen by mankind again.

*sniff* I got the reference ... pity me.

ANGELCRUSHERD

After watching the fourteen episodes, I am at a loss to describe how I feel about Firefly. I believe it to be the greatest television series that I know of, and that isn't just my fandom talking. A friend of mine is in love with the Angel series and worships Joss, but until I finished the pilot episode and took a step back, I hadn't known the meaning of entertainment. Before I discovered Firefly, I thought touching stories and sweet fight scenes were the reason that I watched visual media.

Firefly isn't a coming of age tale, or a conflict between pro- and antagonists. Firefly isn't just another piece of shit that FOX can molest. It doesn't have sappy dramatic crap that makes you want to cry or a score that enhances your emotions. It isn't based on a true story or tell the tragedy of something gone horribly wrong. The filming of the show was unprofessional. The casting wasn't perfect. The computer generated sequences weren't top of the line. Even the story itself wasn't impervious. All of these things are mere terms, in reality all they are are keywords that turn intentions into money. Firefly isn't the same Hollywood crap. Firefly is life. Life that is imperfect and unfortunate, but keeps chugging along.

I just found this site and I don't know if Joss visits it or even cares about it, but he has made me happy. I am saddened that the only means of conveying my gratitude is to buy Firefly merchandise and visit theaters frequently, but it is the curse on this age. If money is what it takes for Joss to continue making me happy, money is what I will deliver.

I've never been one for conventions of anything of the sort. I dislike Star Trek and Star Wars and Stargate etc. and I really dislike Westerns, but this series and everything Joss has done with it makes me terribly overjoyed. I don't understand how much of a roadblock FOX can be- I'm not a writer or director- but I really want to see a continuation of the series.

I feel some form of obligation to Joss to do my part. I just hope he doesn't lose interest in this project with Wonder Woman and Goners and whatever else he's plotting. If enough people see Firefly for what it truly is and not just a 'science western', I have no doubt in my mind that his vision will amass a fanbase to rival the best.

My sincere thanks goes out to Joss and everyone who had a hand in Firefly.

I'm happy Joss is happy. I just hope this whole Wonder Woman thing doesn't eat up too much of his life and prevent us from having a Serenity sequel or a revived TV series.

But heck, who am I to quibble with that - he is THE MAN after all. I'm just being selfish, wantin' more Firefly and all.

How so?

Happiness and Contentment usually means there is no motivation to make changes or face new challenges... Most people who are content and happy like to keep re-experiencing the same thing... Part of the deep mammalian brain that makes us self-reinforce these feelings that we like.

I'm also very afraid that this is simply a brave new face to put up in the face of defeat and failure... i.e. it's not the best that it could be, but it is what reality *is*; so I guess I'll just have to be happy with it...

Having to make yourself think that a defeat is really a victory just so that you don't have to face it (somewhat of a denial) and simply so you could be happy with yourself doesn't change the reality that it was a doomed failure... Maybe you'll happy for a bit, but then you'll have to keep moving down the ladder of grief to properly accept it for what it really is...

Yeah, there are always up-sides to everything. But to focus on that mainly and consistently maintaining artificially induced happiness completely and be blinded by it - so much so that you don't evaluate the down-side and make sure that improvements are made for the future... Well, that's just downright myopic - but perhaps there's too much Ritalin, Prozac, or Lithium in the diet.

I am just talking about some perspective on being objective and a bit more of a realist. Nothing wrong with looking at the silver lining on the cloud - just saying that it *is* a cloud (that goes along with it) and *not* just the silver lining.

I've always thought that denial was the first step if you claim that you don't have the problem you recognize that there is a problem, if you claim it isn't a problem you recognize that you have it.

Each of those is half way to acceptance.

I thought maybe I loved this world because I, too, dream of flying through the universe in a ship of my very own and seeing all there is to see (just like that bear that climbed the mountain?). If I ever was fortunate enough to travel that way, I would want to do it with folks just like this crew and so I have enjoyed every moment of traveling with them through Joss' imagination. Thank you, Joss, for making me happy, as well. And thank you to the Browncoats who've extended this journey just a little farther...

Joss has many tales to tell, about many characters; more power to him. But our Big Damn Heroes and their 'Verse will always have a special resonance to him, I think. Sooner or later, in some form, their tale will continue.

As for us, well, Browncoats know how to hold ground, and keep the faith. I'm a thinkin' we'll rise again. We've already had more miracles than we had any right to expect.

But I've got a belief that there'll be more to come.

That would be the best thing to do. Unfortunately, Joss went to them a while ago and asked if they wanted to pick up the series after it got canceled. They couldn't because of the money it would take to run firefly. I'm hopeful, though, that USA (sister channel) will help with the money, since they've sugned on to run Serenity in 2008, or that firefly might not cost as much and SciFi will take a chance.

keep flyin'
