I don't know if this is posted yet but take a look at this Filmforce.net report:

Exclusive: A Serenity Sequel?
This one's for the Browncoats.
by IGN FilmForce

December 1, 2005 - IGN FilmForce has heard that, although it was very disappointed in the poor boxoffice showing for Serenity, Universal may not have retired Captain Malcolm Reynolds and his renegade crew just yet.

Sources said that, given the strong sales of the TV series Firefly on DVD, Universal is planning a sequel film to Serenity that will be produced with and to broadcast premiere on the Sci Fi Channel, which is part of the NBC Universal family.

The project is said to be a lower budget undertaking streamlined for the small-screen.

IGN FilmForce checked with Joss Whedon's camp who denied the claim; Universal did not comment.

Time will tell if this rumor pans out.

I read this on ign.com today as well, and it seems to make a lot of sense to me. Sci-fi would be the perfect place for Serenity sequel, and the medium helps keep the cost relatively low.

By the way, I'm a new convert to the 'verse (i saw the movie about a month ago and was hooked), and I am PSYCHED!

Why not just finance another series? It'll cost about the same as a movie, and a series is what most people prefer. Also gives the network more advertising revenues (because there'll be more time for advertisments), and the chance of non-converts randomly tuning in will be greater for a series than for a movie, hence a better chance to increase the fanbase. I could go on and on about how they should be talking about Firefly: The TV Show instead of FIrefly: The Made-For-TV Movie.

Still good news, though. Something's better than nothing.

This type of project could very easily be the beginning of a return to TV full-time. That's exactly what happened with Battlestar Galactica.

Yes, exactly.

Make the equivalent of a second series pilot episode.

If it is popular enough, they would then have the sets and stuff ready to go for a restart of the series. If it doesn't pan out, they have not commited themselves to so much.

I'll just wait and see (but not hold my breath).

Erk! Starting... to... turn... blue!

Hang on. What happened to Fox having the rights for it as a TV show? I can see Universal fudging it by releasing it at a few cinemas (to the delight of those Browncoats who can get it) but I think that they'll only be able to repeat that particular trick once and then... we're back in Fox's clutches.

All depends on the agreement between FOX and Sci-Fi.

Plenty of shows have jumped from one network to another before.

The scary part is wether they can get Joss and the cast back into the show and away from whatever contracts/projects they are now involved it as well if they do get the rights to bring it back.

Select to view spoiler:

A bit easier now that there's 2 less cast members to bring back, but still...

Well, what I have heard (admittedly through second-hand sources) is that the "10 year contract with Fox" was just a rumor started by Nathan for reasons that remain unclear (or I can't recall). Memory is a bit hazy, but I think either Uni or Joss himself now has the TV rights.

And while we’re on the subject of sequel rumors, let’s not forget this juicy one that was posted here a little while ago and may have gotten buried in the shuffle: http://fireflyfans.net/thread.asp?b=2&t=15035. This rumor has the benefit of not just being a nebulous “source,” but an unnamed Uni producer (scroll down the thread for a link to the podcast and a description of what was said).

Yes, but, 20th Century Fox (the parent company of FOX television) held a distribution credit for the series while it was in broadcast, and still holds the rights to the DVD releases.

Putting a Firefly movie (or, with any luck, a second series) on the Sci-Fi channel really makes sense. I mean, they were promoting the hell out of it before Serenity came out in theaters, and they're still airing the series now. It's almost like they're leading up to something; which could be the DVD release of Serenity in a couple weeks, but I'd like to think it's something more than that.

At this point, it's all rumor and conjecture.

As some have said, I don't think we should be popping the champagne too soon until they make like an official announcement.

But if it is true, then I'll be going "YES!!!" and "Oh Shit." "YES!!!" in that we'll be seeing our BDM's again. But "Oh Shit" for me because I'll have to wait for it to come on DVD.

I live in Regina, Saskatchewan and have a basic cable package. When FIREFLY was on, it was on Global, so I was able to catch it first run. SERENITY of course was a theatrical release. But if it were to go to cable, like the Sci-Fi channel, then I'll have to wait for it come onto SPACE and have to buy that channel along with a bunch of other channels I wouldn't watch, out of my own pocket, no less.

So it would take a while for it to get to me if this were to happen.

Is it just me or am I the only one who would prefer to see it on the Big Screen than as a movie on the sci fi channel.

I love some of their original programming but their original movies tend to suck. Has any one seen Species III? It was horrible?

I prefer the return of the tv show or a big screen film.

Granted, but I'm gonna go with Joss here and say that I'll take Firefly in whatever medium I can get it. Big screen, little screen, hell I'd even take it on Podcast if that's the best they could do!

You know the old saying about beggars and choosers? Well, Firefly fans are living, incontrovertible proof that that maxim holds about an ocean's worth of water.

Besides, Sci-Fi has been doing good programming recently. BSG, anyone?

Hmm....

I feel like i'd prefer another movie or a return of the show to a TV movie. As much of a rabid fan as i am, i think it was hard enough convincing people to see "a movie based on a cancelled TV show". Saying "watch this TV movie based on a mid-range grossing sci-fi flick released in September which was based on a cancelled TV show" seems like it would be even more of a hard sell.

Plus, TV movies don't air often.

Also i'm worried about who would return if it went back to TV.

That being said, i'll take anything over nothing any day.

I'm actually hoping for another movie, though, since a return straight to a series again seems, sadly, the unlikeliest.

I'm babbling like a moonbrain.

Hopefully, I'm wrong but I believe that making a TV sequel to Serenity would go against the restrictions FOX put on Joss and Universal when they negotiated for the rights of the concept.

No network other than FOX is allowed to produce new episodes of Firefly for the next ten years 2004-2014.

I'm pretty sure that putting Firefly back on the air and calling it Serenity would be a breach of that agreement...

I wish I were smarter so all of that could've made more sense.

As has been mentioned by several people further up the thread, all of that is rumor and third person hearsay. None of us really knows the full details of that agreement, and whatever it was initially could have been renegotiated. We'll just have to wait and see. I won't celebrate until we hear official word from Joss, but here's hoping my signature line is still valid.

I know that this has been said before, but run with me for a moment:

Sci-Fi Channel decides with the permission of FOX (who ain't done much with Firefly liscening rights) to create a tv movie. It runs about 1-2 hours long on a Friday or Saturday evening. The special effects are good, the story is awesome, and ratings are pretty decent for the time slot. After re-running for a few weeks Sci-Fi decides to make it into an original series.

Now I know its based on hear-say and rumors, but remember there is presidence for this. Sci-Fi took an older short lived Battlestar Galactica series and turned it into a hit. They also have a good thing with Stargate after they bought it from Showtime.

Basically I'm full of it, but without hope, what have you got?

I agree. It seems that everytime I read about Fox holding Firefly rights, the terms get longer. Last year, I heard it was a 7 year deal. Now I'm reading 10? Where did the info come from anyway? Do any of us really know what the contract says?

Whatever they are, they aren't stoping Sci-Fi from running the series now. So, aparently, the only difference is running new episodes?

Also, I've seen where some are saying they would rather have a theatrical movie or TV series over a TV movie. Well, not to sound mean...but DUH! I think all of us would prefer that. I don't think anyone is saying they would prefer a TV movie over a series or theatrical release. We're simply saying that if that's all we can get, then we'll take it. It's better than nothing. Plus, as some have mentioned, a TV movie may be what is needed to lead to a new series. Plus, a straight to DVD movie would look nice on the shelf next to the Firefly series and Serenity DVDs.

Exactly! Hopefully, they'll begin with a multi-hour mini-series, that would pick up where the movie left off, and then transit into a regular, weekly series.

It seems to me that BG has done awfully well, even winning over many of the old series fans.

Can you name a movie, where the sequel squared (sequel of a sequel) didn't suck? I don't think that it was so much Sci-Fi, as much as trying to beat a dead horse... Look at Jaws III, The Godfather III, Superman III, Star Wars III (for goodness sake, they gave us Ewoks!)

Okay, the 10 year thing doesn't exist! Really it doesn't, thought everyone knew that by now?
It was, apparently, a throw away remark by Nathon Fillion some time back that, oblivious to him it seems, snowballed out of proportion.
I can't take any credit for this mind, it's Tracy who finds out all this kinda stuff.
EDIT: I see it's already been mentioned on this thread anyhow.
