My local PBS station in the late 80s ran all 7 Doctor Whos all the way through, and I loved them. Scifi debuts the returned Who Friday at 9. The effects now look like they're state of the art. Will anyone else here be watching?

Does that seem right to you?

I watched the new season and the Christmas special on bittorrent. Its well worth your time and I'll be watching it again when it airs on Scifi.

The only problem I have with the show is that there are only 13 episodes a year. But they're already planning two spinoffs of the show for next year so it won't be too bad.

The show is good. Not exactly Battlestar Galactica or Firefly good but as good as the Brits can do on their limited budgets.

Well, I can agree about Firefly, but I'm out in left field on Galactica. I don't care for it at all. I think it's just a soap opera.

I recall at some point in the Who universe the Daleks became the police. I believe that's off in the future after the current version.

Does that seem right to you?

The new ones aren't half bad.
They pull of exactly what they should, that is being cheesy, interesting fun and at the same time taking the science very seriously.

I like em.

But still in my mind THE Dr. Who is Tom Baker, but that’s probably because I’m an 80s child that hasn’t really grown up.

All that mullet maintaining hair spray and neon pink shirts must have done something to me, y’know, developmentally.

I bought the new series (Series 1 as they are calling it) boxset from the UK and watched it, and loved it. I too am a fan of Tom Baker, but I like all the Doctors, and enjoyed Christopher Eccelsten(sp?), and I'm sorry to see him go. The new Doctor looks good too.

I highly recommend you watch the Doctor Who Confidential shows that go with each episode of the new series. They give insight into the episodes, but also have interviews with many of the old Doctors and companions! I almost enjoyed the DWC shows as much as the new series! I'm not sure if Sci-Fi channel is showing them or not, but get your hands on them via bit-torrent. The uncut ones they aired on the BBC are MUCH better than the ones that came with the box set. The had to cut out a lot of the good music for legal reasons.

Hee hee... I wish I had a bottle opener or a key chain that would say that! I think my brother and I drove my mom nuts saying that over and over, "no more potato chips?!....EX-TERM-IN-ATE!" Wacky fun...

Mmm...Doctor Who?

No, I'll never do that again. Scouts honour.

Though I did watch the good Doctor's new excursions here in good old Blighty. And we can do happy, relationship-centric sci-fi too. We just do it with less money. And people who aren't as pretty.

I'm going to check it out.

I only watched the Tom Baker/Peter Davisdson years. Man! I loved that show...

I stopped watching when Colin (sorry, don't remember the last name)came on. I didn't care for the clown look.

I watched the movie that came out in the 90's (I think it was) and it wasn't too bad.

Hey! Since there might be a rabid Dr. Who fan here, can anyone tell me the name of the episode where Dr. Who (Tom Baker) is captured by some humanoid creatures who don't speak (that I recall), is in a cave (I think) and says "Say! Would anyone care for a Jelly Baby?" One of the humanoids slaps his hand and jellies go flying everywhere. Dr. Who responds "A simple 'No' would have sufficed."

I've seen the episode once, back in the mid-80's and that's all I remember. That scene had me in hysterics and I'd love to see it again -- if I only knew which episode it was!!

I may be the only Who fan who actually liked Colin Baker. I thought he was a perfect combination of John Perwee and Tom Baker. But then again, I liked all of the Doctors. I'm really anticipating it.

Maybe Davros will return. That used to be my name for public forums years ago.

Jon Pertwee, Tom Baker, and now Christopher Eccleston takes the place of my favorite kooky time lord. Although my friend is turning me on to Patrick Troughton space hobo.

Another thing that got me into the Who, the theme song, it still rocks to this day.

Yes it does. I'm so looking forward to hearing that theme song again.
I have a blue police box piggy bank, heh heh.

I recall a really good 6 part episode where in the first two parts the Cybermen were trying to invade Gallifrey. Tom Baker created a portal to zap them away at the end of part two, but as they were celebrating, they looked up in horror to see the Sontarons had come through the portal!
I can't remember if that's the right spelling, but it was a very intense, good episode.

YES! The theme song! I forgot all about it! It's one of my favorites as well.

I hope they're still using it for the new series? And I hope it hasn't been all modernized...

Nope, it varies slightly from each series, but it's still as you remember it, and it still has the time tunnel opening!

I was never a Doctor Who fan in my (not long ago) youth. However Russel T Davies has that same creative spark as Joss Whedon and has done wonders with the new incarnation.
Just wait until the latest Doctor arrives!!!

Now there's a thought Joss Whedon / Russel T Davies team up?

As a Billie Piper fan, I'm compelled to argue with that.

DESKTOPHIPPIE

I was at P-Con this weekend - an annual convention held in Dublin, Ireland for people interested in Sci-Fi and Fantasy writing. Anyway, Paul Cornell, one of the writers of the new Dr. Who series, has been a guest for the last two years.

I really hate admitting this, but I almost skipped the new episodes of Who completely because I thought casting Billie Piper was a huge mistake. I only knew her as an annoying pop singer, and the comments from the marketers at BBC about her being a "new, Buffy-like character" set my teeth on edge. I changed my mind when Paul raved about how brilliant she was at last year's con. It also helped that he was obviously a huge fan of Who, but wasn't afraid to take the show in a new direction either. So I watched the show and of course became hooked. Billie Piper, if you ever read this - I owe you a huge apology!

Paul dropped some hints at this year's con that a new baddie will be showing up, one more powerful than the Daleks. I missed the panel where this was mentioned (*&*^&!) but Geek Mafia was there so if anyone spots him he can give you the full info.

Pretty? Louise Jameson, dudes...

I urge you to see most of the new series. Some of the aliens in one storyline were a bit annoying, but your average Dalek was every bit the badass.

If you don't want to sit through the full 43 years (OK, with gaps...) I'd recommend "The Talons of Weng Chiang" Tom Baker, Leela not tolerating any nonsense from (and by that I mean slaughtering) baddies. Only pitiful moment is the giant felt sewer rat, but on the other hand, appealing to your Jayne side, there's whores...

And all on the catering budget of a straight to video slasher movie. (The series, not an episode.)
